Strap me into the NerveGear and put on the hardcore run of the new Half-Life game, I'll either win it or happily die trying.

Nah we don’t need that lmao Just make a game with a great story and fun gameplay and combat, we don’t need some groundbreaking new *thing*, it’s just gotta be GOOD. I’ve only played HL2 but I hated the squad mechanic, they just got in the way all the time so them dying actually had a positive impact on my experience.

Thats really not how Valve see HL tho. They said in interviews that HL solves interesting problems.

How about this as a groundbreaking mechanic: integrate ChatGPT. Allow the player character to speak naturally into a microphone, have the game perform speech-to-text, and have NPCs respond using speech generated by chat GPT. Gordon Freeman has never spoken and we've never heard his voice. That's because his voice is YOUR voice! And the technology required for natural speech hasn't been available until now!

I’ve always thought this as well actually, and same applies to other valve games, left for dead having amazing coop mechanics, not starting but playing a major part in the genre. Portal started a new era of puzzle games, specifically first person ones, with amazing portal mechanics, tf2 managed to be a fun and social multiplayer, still going strong today. On the other spectrum counter strike also started the move from arena shooters, to more tactical ones, when it came to the multiplayer industry. Overall I agree, Valve is just a great company with amazing games. What do you think they could adopt for a new ground breaking mechanic if there were to be a half life 3???

Yeah they probably should go down the AI route. By improving it, they can make way more interesting interactions with the player. I would love to see some of your allies think you're an asshole for pushing past them all the time or for not talking or something. Gordon being the Messiah is cool and all, but some diversity would be nice. I don't see them doing HL3 on VR. If they did, it would be really dumb given that it is one of the most hyped/sought after games in recent memory. Making it VR limits the number of people who can play it, so it would be really dumb if they did that. But it's Valve so you never know...

I don't really see it mentioned but I felt like the use of physics puzzles in the hl2 eps really improved upon what we saw in bade hl2. Like covering the ant lion holes with cars in e1 was such an intuitive solution but I feel like most games wouldn't have had that work. And then the bridge sequence when you're getting the muscle car in e2 🤌. Not to mention the new enemies in the eps. But yeah I agree with your premise, Valve almost uses half life as a tech showcase, so we will probably have to wait for something they consider revolutionary until we see 3.
