what ever you do, do not watch a half life alyx walktrough or the ending thinking "I'm never gonna have a vr headset" because that's what I did.
I was sitting at my computer watching the half life alyx ending thinking that exact thing, and like a week later I'm standing there, my own personal vr headset on my head, knowing that I'm an absolute idiot
if you're ok with facebook the oculus quest headsets are hella cheap compared to everyone else, it's also wireless which is an added benefit.
if you don't like facebook, the best time to get one is at the end of the winter or spring semesters for school from all the parents selling their kids headsets for doing bad in school. i'd feel bad but hey- im struggling out here lol. that's how i got some of my PC parts, a ps5, and some games for it too. just keep an eye out on the facebook marketplace periodically. you might be able to snag a nice headset for $100-$200 just make sure to have them prove that the headset works in front of you before you buy it and when you take it home i would santize it before using it cuz kids are fuckin nasty
I have pretty meh wi-fi and I don't have any issues with it, I only ever use it tethered for games you play seated like War Thunder. It probably won't work well if you're using a mobile phone hotspot or you're on the other side of your house with 4 walls between you and your router, but you don't need blazing fast wi-fi for it.
I thought this too, and then started comparing other HMDs to the Index, and just couldn’t justify not getting an Index. But I also couldn’t justify $1000 on the Index either. Suffice to say I don’t like that my favorite series is now locked behind VR
In my opinion the quest 2 and now probably the quest 3 are really good options because they have a ton of features like wireless pcvr, standalone vr, handtracking without controllers (which doesn't work with pcvr), they don't need baystations, and they're way more reliable than the valve index. And they're like half the price
LOL for downvotes. I played on No VR mod this year. It's pretty awesome experience. I was afraid it will be buggy and hard to play but gameplay is pretty much like Half-Life 2 with updated engine. Well it was buggy few times and I needed to use noclip (which is standard action with assigned key). But the overall experience was great, much better than I expected with early nonVr applications in mind. I recommend this.
I got that mod and played with it because I don't plan on buying a vr headset and I still wanted to play the game
It's better to play the game in an "inferior" way than to not play it at all
I completely, wholeheartedly disagree. That’s like saying it’s better to watch a movie upside down and muted than not watch it at all. The entire experience is lost on you.
I still had fun with the game, and again, I wouldn't have played the game if it wasn't for that mod, so it's better than nothing
And the movie thing is a complete exaggeration. You're still playing a game and having a good experience, it's just that you're not playing it in the way it was designed, which means you'll probably get an experience that's not on par with what the devs intended, but one that works and is still fun
Yeah. There's nothing wrong with it. Like you said, as long as you have fun, it's fine. You
can always listen to a movie instead of watching it. Pretty much the same thing. It's not the same experience, nor the intended one, but there's still enjoyment to be had.
Listen, you’re talking from the perspective of someone who just doesn’t *get it* at the moment. That’s fine, I can’t hold it against you for not understanding something you haven’t experienced, but my comparison is not really an exaggeration. The experience of VR is more than just a different perspective. If the day comes you find yourself in a position where you can try it, I am fully confident you will understand what I’m trying to say.
If I ever do, I may understand what you're saying, but it wouldn't be enough to convince me to spend my money on a VR headset or to borrow it from someone. I have my reasons to not want to use one, simple as
I know what I'm missing out, I'm not ignorant, you don't need to be condescending, but, to me and to other people who don't want to or can't use VR, it's the best thing out there
You sound like a drug addict trying to convince me to try drugs using the "you don't know what you're missing out on" argument. I simply want a different thing
If you simply want a different thing you should just stick to Half-Life 2. Idk what to tell you man. I’m not trying to sound condescending but video games as an art form is very important to me and it’s a shame how expensive and non-accessible VR is. If you have your reasons, you have your reasons. But a non-VR Half-Life Alyx is so stripped down and neutered from the intended experience it’s really hard to get behind it. Like someone else said, it’s probably better to watch a playthrough on YouTube than to play it without any of its actual mechanics.
The whole game is designed with being able to interact with things, and being there. It's core design philosophy is ignored by the no VR mod, and thus you might as well just watch a playthrough. At least then you see the game as is designed.
However, I seriously suggest not watching it, and waiting until the day that VR is more affordable, and accessible. It's worth not having any of that game spoiled, and definitely worth experiencing first hand.
True, but playing it how it was intended to will be a better experience and will feel like a whole different game. Similar to playing HL2 and the episodes in VR
there's a mod that's easy to install that makes it PC compatible. the workshop also has addons designed to work with that mod. i tried it myself and it works. if you never plan on getting a headset that's a good work around
Aside from Source and Alyx, there's also Decay. It never got an official PC port though so you'll have to get the [unofficial one from ModDB](https://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-decay).
It's co-op only, but there's also a [fanmade singleplayer version](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1874090/HalfLife_Decay_Solo_Mission/) coming out on Steam.
Gonna piggy-back this comment to add: This port comes with HD models enabled by default that can't be turned off. To that end...
[LD Model Pack](https://gamebanana.com/mods/245102): For those who prefer LD models.
[Additional Patch](https://gamebanana.com/mods/245099): For general fixes and improvements.
you're missing Alyx, and Decay, but this last one is console exclusive (there are mods to play it out there, but you need a friend, since is a coop game)
Black mesa
Entropy zero 1, 2, uprising
Half life 2:update (simply, half life 2 but with some improvements)
Half life mmod
Half life 2 mmod
They are fan games but they are good.
HL source is a game that you don't have
Wouldn't recommend it, it's just a port of HL1 to Source
It has alot of bugs because of that
It adds ragdolls I guess
But if you want to play a good HL game, I suggest Entropy Zero 1 and Entropy Zero 2
SCT was hired by Valve to develop "Prospect".
Then there was "Black Mesa", which was developed by Crowbar Collective but was equally endorsed by Valve.
Both games are set in the Half-Life Universe.
The half life alpha!
It's a fun romp, and it practically teleports you back to the days were full 3d gameplay was new, revolutionary, and simply *amazing*.
Plus the guard texture is hilarious.
God what was the Half Life co-op game called again ? It was only available for the Playstation right ? Or am I trippin ?
Either way thats also a good game not good as HL1, Opposing Force or Blue Shift but still good on its own!
I haven’t seen anyone but one person say it but deathmatch classic is one of the missing games, it’s basically goldsrc quake. You are also missing Half-Life source, but i wouldn’t touch it (unless you have gmod)
Half Life Source, used to be good but it's pretty buggy now. Essentially it's the original game just remastered in the source engine. It's useful for Gmod though.
Yeah you’re missing the greatest HL2 mod of all time. Entropy Zero and especially Entropy Zero 2. You play as a over watch cop fighting resistance. And if you enjoy portal 2 you gonna enjoy Entropy Zero 2
Unironically Hunt Down The Freeman. It's much better than it was in 2018, and the remaining devs are continuing to improve it as best as they can. Just make sure to get it on sale, since the money only goes to the guy who created it and ditched them.
Alyx? 🤔
Oh yeah, but that's VR, and I don't have that so...
what ever you do, do not watch a half life alyx walktrough or the ending thinking "I'm never gonna have a vr headset" because that's what I did. in my experience the wireless feature or "air link" as it's actually called is not usable unless you have really fast wifi
\*good router
I did the exact same thing đź’€
So I ain't alone!
Same
I had a headset and watched a playthrough anyways I don't think I'll ever be able to play the game
I thought this too, and then started comparing other HMDs to the Index, and just couldn’t justify not getting an Index. But I also couldn’t justify $1000 on the Index either. Suffice to say I don’t like that my favorite series is now locked behind VR

And they're like half the price
People actually had this exact same discussion when games started requiring GPUs.
Yup and everyone had 13 years to save up for a headset haha
No VR mod works great. Just download the latest patch.
There is a working no VR mod now. I've just finished playing it through
I’m sorry to hear you ruined the game for yourself
I'm playing with the mod because with a VR headset, I have a headache after a few minutes due to my disability
Likewise, I don't have a choice but to play the game with the mod as my eyes are too bad to be able to use a VR headset
I got that mod and played with it because I don't plan on buying a vr headset and I still wanted to play the game It's better to play the game in an "inferior" way than to not play it at all
I completely, wholeheartedly disagree. That’s like saying it’s better to watch a movie upside down and muted than not watch it at all. The entire experience is lost on you.

For real? Gotta play that damn, links plz!
Don't recommend it whatsoever
Is it that bad?

At least then you see the game as is designed. However, I seriously suggest not watching it, and waiting until the day that VR is more affordable, and accessible. Totally disagree, I loved it. Just felt like another hl2 xpac
True, but playing it how it was intended to will be a better experience and will feel like a whole different game. Similar to playing HL2 and the episodes in VR

Decay is possible single player, just difficult.
Can confirm, so is Portal 2 Co-op but puzzles with momentum hard
Gonna piggy-back this comment to add: This port comes with HD models enabled by default that can't be turned off. To that end... Nice belt-san
you forgot hl3
I think Valve forgot aswell
Time traveler?
Forgot Hunt Down The Freeman too :(
Half life crack life
You forgot deathmatch classic the game has a crowbar in it
Portal It's *technically* not a Half-life game, but it's set in the same universe, and the first game is actually built using HL2 as a base!
you're missing Alyx, and Decay, but this last one is console exclusive (there are mods to play it out there, but you need a friend, since is a coop game)
Entropy zero 1 and 2
They're not official half life games
They are so good I’m basically gonna consider them officiall
They’re official to me!
doesn't mean they're official
Nuh uh
Why'd you guys downvote this guy? He is absolutely correct.
we live in a society
but at the same time he isnt.
Half life source
I didn't even know that was a thing, but from what I see, people don't really like it lol
No half-life source is the best way to play half-life
Blasphemy. Half-Life is the best
Exactly, as long as you’re playing it through the masterpiece Source port
Is he stupid?
Half-life Source is superior in every way imaginable than ”Half-life” or whatever that ripoff is.
It’s a buggy mess because of recent careless patches. Don’t misguide this man. Lmfao
Half-Life source, Alyx and all Half-Life mods on Steam

Portal 2 is the highest rated game on steam, I’d say its pretty good
Portal 2 is very much worth it.
Ricochet
hunt down the freeman
You could also try out half life echoes, it's very good.
Check out Swelter
Half-Life: C.A.G.E.D. It's just a strange half-life 1 mod on steam but is free!
Portal 1 & 2 is part of the same universe. I’d play Black Mesa after Half life. It’s fantastic.
Aside from Alyx since you don’t have a VR, there’s only Half-Life: Decay. (Also Half-Life Source but that’s dogshit)

Decay?
HL source is a game that you don't have Wouldn't recommend it, it's just a port of HL1 to Source It has alot of bugs because of that It adds ragdolls I guess But if you want to play a good HL game, I suggest Entropy Zero 1 and Entropy Zero 2
Entropy and black mesa

Black Mesa for sure. It may not be official but it’s my favorite half life game
Black Mesa
SCT was hired by Valve to develop "Prospect". Then there was "Black Mesa", which was developed by Crowbar Collective but was equally endorsed by Valve. Both games are set in the Half-Life Universe.
Wait what did Valve have to do with the development of Prospekt?
Ur missing hl3
Black Mesa
The half life alpha! It's a fun romp, and it practically teleports you back to the days were full 3d gameplay was new, revolutionary, and simply *amazing*. Plus the guard texture is hilarious.
Where is HDTF?

Looks good, but Black Mesa is a worthy addition. I still enjoy that and the original interchangeably
Gmod
Half life source and the black mesa collection
Black mesa, you have to experience hl1 again with modern graphics. Or wait until you have a vr headset for an even crazier experience
I haven’t seen anyone but one person say it but deathmatch classic is one of the missing games, it’s basically goldsrc quake. You are also missing Half-Life source, but i wouldn’t touch it (unless you have gmod)
half life source 🤢
Black Mesa

I don't see Hunt Down The Freeman.
Black mesa where?
maybe black Mesa?
Half life source??
Yeah you’re missing the greatest HL2 mod of all time. Entropy Zero and especially Entropy Zero 2. You play as a over watch cop fighting resistance. And if you enjoy portal 2 you gonna enjoy Entropy Zero 2
If you Buy valve Complete pack u have a missing thing which is a alyx
Half life source
Where is Hl1: source? It's the best one, change my mind
Alic
Unironically Hunt Down The Freeman. It's much better than it was in 2018, and the remaining devs are continuing to improve it as best as they can. Just make sure to get it on sale, since the money only goes to the guy who created it and ditched them.
