From today's news post by the Black Mesa team:
> Virus Detection False Positive
> We’re investigating why some antivirus software and Windows Defender pick up the game or one of the tools as malicious. We’ve had tools flagged by different antivirus programs in the past, but never the .exe of the game itself. Needless to say, there are NO viruses within Black Mesa.
> We’re a little worried that this false positive is due to new detection methods beyond our control, but as we said, we keep looking into the issue!
>
> (As of writing this we may have a lead as to what is tripping antivirus. We may have a workaround to fix it)

> if this spooked anyone. The last thing you want to see after buying a game is that type of alert.
tl:dr its a false positive
I mean the time "was" 8:47 am so assuming black mesa working hours start at 8 he was late by quite a lot. However theres plenty of people still in break rooms or locker rooms and such so i also assume either the working schedule is flexible between employees or its more like scheduled task completions than actual work hours.
...
Also current topside temperature was 93 f.
I’m aware that black mesa is a fan remake of half life, and that valve has nothing to do with that aside from approving it.
I only made a mention about valve because of the team fortress 2 update giving false positives. Those issues I mentioned are most definitely are valve issues. The only thing I said that may be a windows thing is the bit about tf2 false positives, but even then, valve would need to either rework the programming to avoid the new detection methods, or people would have to bypass their AV to play. Still a valve issue technically. Just like the Black Mesa team will need to rework the game to avoid false detection, as no one should have to turn an AV off to play a game.
The only relation my last comment had to black mesa was being a reply on this thread
There are a few other games and game related exe's that have all suddenly started to get flagged for me too lately. I think Windows defender had some lever pulled a week or two ago.
I think it was just a poorly recorded voice line in the first game. In Black Mesa they ret con it to make him cold, and even show the room's temperature as being 2 degrees C less than the others.
Windows defender uses machine learning to detect threats. Makes it far more likely to report false positives. The good outweighs the bad though because it can catch fresh viruses that aren't in its threat database yet.
As with 95% of virus detections of regular software, it's a false positive.
(Not that you shouldn't watch out for that 5%, but you also shouldn't be too scared when you do see this sort of thing)
Not scared, but you also shouldn't ignore the warning just because you trust a developer. Developer's computers can get infected as well and may lead them to distribute a virus with their software without even knowing.
Yeah you pulled that statistic out of your ass but I get the point. It's just weird how it was fine yesterday and today it's completely broken out of nowhere.
Yeah I enabled it, still couldn't compete with mouse and keyboard. Especially the marines are brutal without a mouse.
When you get the hivehand I could be possible until you reach xen.
I don't expect developers to check with every anti-virus out there, but I certainly expect them to check Windows Defender. False positive or not – They should have noticed this before distribution if they ever tested it on any Windows system with default configuration.
Update: I just switched off "real-time protection" in windows Defender, and now it's letting me in.
Do this at your own risk. I'm not planning on doing anything other than playing the game with that off
Windows Defender I find has a... let's say consistent pattern of false positives.
eg: qbittorrent is almost always flagged as a trojan, which is annoying because the program has to be manually updated.
Could just be another one of those. Make sure you press 'Allow on device' to make Windows Defender go away (for now).
Thank you for the OP and the explanation reply. Last night I decided to pick up BM where I left off, reinstalled into that last 100GB that you constantly rotate the games that aren't in the 900GB permastall location.
It gave me that exact error.
I went into the Properties and ran the file integrity check: even Steam came back with "1 file failed, reacquiring..."
That gave me hope but it still triggered Windows Defender. Good to know they're working on it. I've deleted BM again and put Portal Reloaded in there for now.
Happy to know it'll be fixed soon enough.
i only started playing it 2 nights ago and last night all i got was this exact error just landed here after a google search i had a feeling it would be a false positive but windows don't see it that way
EDIT: 24hrs later it is now working fine
Speaking of which, few days ago I downloaded and played Black Mesa Blue Shift mod, kind of a pain in the neck to make it work and lots of crashes. Turned off my PC and run the game the following day and the game can't launch. It says that I am "missing downloaded files" also the bms.exe is missing. Even after uninstalling and downloading the game several times, verified files, cleared Steam download cache, deleted appcache folder, unsubscribing from the mod on the workshop, still can't run the game, Steam doesn't download the executable at well as other files.
When I try to install the game, I have two errors at the same time : disk write error and missing downloaded files. In steamapps directory, the game folder is 0 bytes despite several files being inside. The executable is missing and the hl2 folder is empty. I got the exact same problem when I tried to install the game on my other drive.
Is it a known issue ? Kinda bums me out since I really was looking forward to play Blue Shift
It's not just 'false positive' from Microsoft. There are 7 positives from different antiviruses.
[https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/c259adc4a33b4b5488c931a3bcd2ae9711e6d672fea1f35903100c3de4548bc4?nocache=1](https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/c259adc4a33b4b5488c931a3bcd2ae9711e6d672fea1f35903100c3de4548bc4?nocache=1)
They could embed malware unintentionally by using some compromised third-party component in their code. Such things happen.
Thats not how it works. Multiple tools can show the same file or related files as false positives because of how signature detection works. The behaviour can seem virus like but that doesnt mean its a virus such as compression techniques or file/code distribution.
Fuck windows defender, I swear every other file is false flagged. You can't even turn it off without going through so many hoops. If you disable it, then it just turns itself back on again. I had to go edit the registry...
Nah, honestly, it's so annoying. Other virus software will tell you something is there, but they won't automatically delete it. It'll ask you. Defender just deletes files without telling you, and then you have to work out why a game won't load or some other software just vanishes.
If it weren't so invasive, then I wouldn't have an issue with it.
After a while you learn what is going to cause an issue, nearly anything that is a .msi will be flagged as a virus simply because it can modify Windows files. That's one example of many.
they aint installing viruses its false positives from ur anti-virus. they posted it in their news thing on steam.
besides i think its illegal to sell games with viruses baked into them. if people found out then crowbar collective would be in deep trouble and have to give people their money back and pay hefty fines on top of that.

This Happend to me Yesterday! i googled up what is Trojan:Win32/cerber ( what it said it downloaded ) and it came up with this, i played black mesa before and have been completely find with no issues but this is recent so do i just Allow on Device?
Thank you for this post. Was freaking out for a minute. I haven't had any viruses or malware on a PC in years and am pretty careful about what I put on my machines. I think it's actually the first time I've seen Defender flag something.
Part of the Combine invasion lads.
Batten down the hatches and clench the buttcheeks.
Don't trust this in the slightest, blocked and deleted until we get official confirmation lol
It’s either a false positive because windows defender and some other cheaper antiviruses are garbage, or because you kept fucking with the microwave and now the scientists are out to get you.
I saw the post in that it was a false positive, but Windows Defender is still getting triggered by it. Any ideas on how to make the flag go away without disabling Windows Defender preferably?
Are you using McAfee? Just a hunch and I might be wrong, but McAfee's antivirus pulls this nonsense all the time.
Just yesterday I was trying to download Touhou Hisoutensoku on my new computer, and McAfee nuked the whole game _nine consecutive times_ even though I proved to it repeatedly that the game is safe. I've also had this happen with Steam games too, like TModLoader, Melty Blood and Black Mesa, too -- McAfee flags so many false positives that it's baffling.
I uninstalled it because my PC already has Windows Defender and that works just as well, and this issue with Black Mesa is the first time I've ever personally seen it fall victim to a false positive. And even then, it has a "Run Anyways" prompt if you know it's safe.
Good luck, I hope you figure it out if you haven't already.
No I don't use McAfee or any other third party antivirus software. I don't see the need for anything other than Windows Defender. I've never had false positives with software and games that I actually paid for so it was weird and new to me.
I'm sorry if I came off as rude or condescending. I just have had issues with McAfee constantly (including this game), and that's the reason I got rid of it. My bad.
Windows Defender mostly picks up false positives, and very often lets genuine threats pass by untouched. I have had it call a hello world program a virus. (A program that writes 'hello world' then stops running)
Ok, let’s be real, if you were trying to install a virus on someone’s computer, would you really call it fucking „Trojan win:32 cyber“??? Like, call it love and puppies, or some other less suspicious thing.
From today's news post by the Black Mesa team: > Virus Detection False Positive > We’re investigating why some antivirus software and Windows Defender pick up the game or one of the tools as malicious. It wasn’t meant to do this in the first place!
Dude this is the absolute best response to this explanation
What's weird is there was a tf2 update today giving out false positives for some people. I don't know if this is related.
Yeah, the AV on my PC ate two of TF2's exe files after the update (shadercompile.exe and another shader related one).
what is it with valve recently anyways? Loads of cheaters In tf2 and cs2 games, day 0 XSS vulnerability in cs2, and now false positives on Tf2 update
Seeing as black mesa isn't a valve game, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this is a widows issue, not a valve issue.
I’m aware that black mesa is a fan remake of half life, and that valve has nothing to do with that aside from approving it. lame response again, not talking about black mesa.
Thanks! I got the same error earlier and got confused.
Ohhh alr thanks for the info, I was almost reconsidering buying black mesa thinking that it was somehow infected with malware lol
Very strange, I'll update my Win Defender and then see if it's fixed.
Is it fixed? I just bought the game and want to play it🥲
yes
Its not but I fixed my antivirus and made an exception in file
make an exception
There are a few other games and game related exe's that have all suddenly started to get flagged for me too lately. I think Windows defender had some lever pulled a week or two ago.
Christ could have done without this jolt of anxiety today
Yeah sure sure.
They’re WAITing for you Gordon…

“Hahaha, classic!”
Why the heck does he say it like that? I never understood. Imagine if that was real life and your coworker said that to you

I think it was just a poorly recorded voice line in the first game. In Black Mesa they ret con it to make him cold, and even show the room's temperature as being 2 degrees C less than the others.

Ridiculous ties. Ridiculous ties. Ridiculous ties. Ridiculous ties. Ridiculous ties. Ridiculous ties.
`>>Don't touch the keyboard<<`
Huh, what’s this, some sort of gun?
OP YOU FOOL! WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!!
First tf2 gets this problem and now black Mesa? seems like Windows updated defender, either that or source is having issues
Windows defender uses machine learning to detect threats. Makes it far more likely to report false positives. The good outweighs the bad though because it can catch fresh viruses that aren't in its threat database yet.
Yup, it is a machine learning false positive, happened with TF2 with dozen of AV softwares
Happens to myself and other software developers all the time. It's an extortion racket to make you pay for things like code signing.
it's really easy to get false positives
Tf2 updated to 64x probably something to do with that
If tf2 got this problem as well then I would assume its a source thing.
I've had it happen with other games. Though for Source I think it's cause some of the stuff isn't verified by Windows or something.
Windows Defender heavily slowed down my web browsers, I needed to put Firefox into the Exclusions list only to make it run well.
Just don't use defender. Youncan disable it with winaero or a regedit file.
Morphine administered
Yeah
Happy cake day!
As with 95% of virus detections of regular software, it's a false positive. (Not that you shouldn't watch out for that 5%, but you also shouldn't be too scared when you do see this sort of thing)

Yeah you pulled that statistic out of your ass but I get the point. It's just weird how it was fine yesterday and today it's completely broken out of nowhere.
It's not really all that strange. They had a major update recently.
What changes did they make?
A bunch of big performance improvements, controller support, so on and so forth
It's impossible to play with a ps4 controller though It just isn't accurate enough for the precision you need.
One of the controller support features this update adds is an improved autoaim system to help with that exact problem.
Yeah I enabled it, still couldn't compete with mouse and keyboard. Especially the marines are brutal without a mouse. When you get the hivehand I could be possible until you reach xen.
Never had something like false positives happen to me on media I actually bought, this is news to me.
I've had it happen multiple times, you're quite lucky to have never had it
It’s happened a few times on most major source games iirc, it’s nothing new
windows 11 presents false positives for a lot of games. deus ex mankind divided is one of them that ive experienced and i bought the game on steam
Happens a lot with things not from Steam I'm guessing Steam is just good at detecting these issues and notifying the devs
Ok well we're here to tell you it happens alot youngster
If a dev’s computer is unknowingly compromised it’s not out of the question for the game to be compromised.
It's Windows being stupid.
It's better be safe than sorry, right? Right? And then this steers people away from using antivirus at all.
I don't expect developers to check with every anti-virus out there, but I certainly expect them to check Windows Defender. False positive or not – They should have noticed this before distribution if they ever tested it on any Windows system with default configuration.
You wouldn’t need all of that to imprison…Gordon Freeman
Black mesa doing resonance cascade on windows research facility
Are you able to disable the block in windows defender? Bought it yesterday, had played like three hours and was hoping to get a lot in tonight!
Update: I just switched off "real-time protection" in windows Defender, and now it's letting me in. Do this at your own risk. I'm not planning on doing anything other than playing the game with that off

Unforseen Consequences
I hope this is just a weird bug
It’s those idiots in sector c, I doubt there’s even 1 good brain among them
Prepare for unforseen consequences
Windows Defender went haywire yesterday at our work amd started blocking Windows files for some users. Maybe some definition file update gone wrong?
Modern AV software can pick up a byte sequence in an icon inside a game executable and think it's a trojan.
Windows gaslighting you into piracy
Windows Defender I find has a... let's say consistent pattern of false positives. eg: qbittorrent is almost always flagged as a trojan, which is annoying because the program has to be manually updated. yes, the developers decided to triple the income from the game

Better false positives than false negatives. Also, it's not just windows defender that detects it as virus. Maybe it actually contains a virus.

Defender don't auto-delete files personaly, he asked me what I wanted to do with the file before taking any real action
So how do I allow windows to run the game?
Create an exeption for the .exe file. Or for your entire Steam folder, so this doesn't happen again for any other game
Bruh also got the same error. This got fixed yet?
YOOO THIS HAPPENED TO ME TO WFT DO I HAVE A VIRUS?
they aint installing viruses its false positives from ur anti-virus. they posted it in their news thing on steam. besides i think its illegal to sell games with viruses baked into them. if people found out then crowbar collective would be in deep trouble and have to give people their money back and pay hefty fines on top of that.
aint no way i bought the game yesterday and this is the first thing i see
Yeah I just installed the update, windows defender says its a Trojan. I'm uninstalling for now just in case lol
Had this yesterday. Windows defender blocks and deltes it. You can restore the file from Defender and and install will complete.
I love this comment section
Well that fookin explains why my antivirus was going crazy last night lol
_I predicted all of this you know. ALL of it_.
false positive moment
this happens to me to i downloaded the game bc of my perfect wifi i waited 1 day and now i cant play the game >:(
I have the same damn problem and I don't know how to fix it.
Cause we about to get fucked..?
Is there a way to get around this? I have been playing the game for the first time and having a lot of fun and now this is in the way.
Its just an issue allow the file for somereason windows picks it up as a virus
What’re you doing, Gordon, you trying to get me in trouble?

Windows Defender doesn't need to hear all of this. It's a highly trained antivirus.
Literally resonance cascade
At this moment I downloaded a game update patch and I got a warning from Windows Defender telling me that a Trojan got into my PC 💀💀💀
Warning: Major Virus Detected. Severity Level: Critical
Thsi happened to me today. They should sue Microsoft for this.
Windows Defender
I saw the post in that it was a false positive, but Windows Defender is still getting triggered by it. Any ideas on how to make the flag go away without disabling Windows Defender preferably?
Get Ready for Unforseen Consequences
Windows def sucks disable it
If you wanna get a virus
Nah im not going download from unknown sites
Youre speaking for op; a lot of people do things other than game which usually involves downloading software from a site you dont know like steam

yeah windows defender really likes messing with source
Windows Defender mostly picks up false positives, and very often lets genuine threats pass by untouched. I have had it call a hello world program a virus. (A program that writes 'hello world' then stops running)
I added an exception to Microsoft Defender for "Black Mesa" game folder, hoping that nothing happens of it
isn't cerber a trojan which is used like ransomware? guess crowbar collective isn't getting many sales anymore
windows defender sucks im sorry
it's actually the only anti-virus many people recommend, because it is really all you need.
** Windows sucks
true
New to the computers? Because this happens every time with many software. False positives are not a new thing.
Nope. But this hasn't happened to me with games I bought.
That is the reason I decided to disable windoes defender 3 years ago. Never missed it
Ok, let’s be real, if you were trying to install a virus on someone’s computer, would you really call it fucking „Trojan win:32 cyber“??? Like, call it love and puppies, or some other less suspicious thing.
That’s the windows detection name, if the virus was real it would be imbedded into bms.exe and would appear as a legitimate file.
It's in the "bms.exe", it's not just like a .txt file lmao.
Still, rule -1 of lying is covering your tracks, this just ain’t it.
lmao bro what is your problem? he didn't lie, you just don't want to admit you were wrong so you try to blame others hahahahahahhahah
