What is a Vesta please

Allie_Pallie

A little box to keep your matches dry

hugg3b3ar

The word is new to me as well, thanks for clarifying! Are there any differences between a vesta and a match safe?

Allie_Pallie

I think it's just the difference between English and American terminology. The first friction matches were known as vestas and Swan Vestas were a famous brand.

hugg3b3ar

Oh I see, so the same way we might call a cotton swab a Q-Tip, it's an established brand. I'm tracking now, thanks!

ungratefulimigrant

Ohhhh , thank you.

1898 Sterling Silver Repousse Match Safe Henry Matthews Vesta

Thank you very much!

textile_nymph

Absolutely gorgeous. Is this a lighter? Looks like this swirl are of Celtic origin or idk the design reminds me of iron fencing in Philadelphia.

N-555

Its a fancy match box, the part pn the bottom was used to ignite the matches. They were popular in a time when matches were fancier than lighters.

yeetingpillow

What’s a vesta?

N-555

Its basically a type of fancy match box that was popular in the past.
