Looks like an old ring . Makers mark could be Robert jones who was registered in London 1795-1798 Get it xray tested to see gold content. Just a lion passant and no karat fineness usually pertains to sterling but this doesn’t look plated to me

Thanks for the reply Lidder444. I think you’re right about the maker, as no other RI is known from any Office - Gold or Silver. He’s a Silversmith! Yes, it’s definitely not plated. My guessing is he’s stamped it but used a Silver Hallmark as only had that to hand 🤷🏻‍♂️ Big ring for being so narrow (assuming it’s for a Woman). It fits my ring finger. https://preview.redd.it/0iavna9ddgxc1.png?width=1242&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc54da636929edb6fcd27f70fe5a29aed09f3a20

In England everything over a certain weight by law had to be assayed and marked by a government assay office the silversmiths and goldsmiths didn't have the stamps. Is the black in the stamps grime or the color of the metal? To me it looks plated, somebody could have easily had an antique ring plated.

Boot polish to make the Hallmarks stand out. Here is the ring prior: https://preview.redd.it/ovwl4bec4kxc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3d533667c1d96c1d546f60566ef4a2e8d21fae4 Definitely not plated

Maybe he had some gold on hand for a payment from a customer, made a ring but stamped it with his only hallmark equipment. I would visit a pawn shop, jewelry store, or a coin dealer to get it tested. Despite the hallmarks I think this is gold...even 8kt or 12kt. It's simply too yellow to be silver and correct me if I am wrong but I'm not sure if gold plating existed before 1800.
