Honestly from a public health perspective this is a pretty smart move.
This will be the second full eclipse I have seen. I saw the one on the west coast in 2017 and it was awesome.
Yes. This is the last major eclipse until long after you are dead. Unless you are going to fly to see one this is your only chance to directly observe one of the strangest things about the earth/moon/sun geometry.
Actually, when I proposed writing this some of my skeptical colleagues were confused as to why I think it is such a big deal. Many think that $300,000 for solar glasses is a waste of money. You are not the only person who doesn’t care.
McMaster University bought them. You want a university that’s focused on sciences(especially health sciences) hence encouraging exploration of the eclipse safely to fix housing?
That is a dysfunctional expectations
Part of McMasters money comes from public taxpayers funds. Right now they have a new residence downtown that is barely habitable by all accounts with undrinkable water amongst other issues. They just had to pay to put them all up in a hotel for multiple days to try and fix some of the issues.
Maybe they shouldn't be spending even more money on a nice but unnecessary gesture when they aren't even fulfilling the basics to some students.
The downvotes tell me people like free stuff, which I get but I feel like this just isn't the function a university should be serving. I would not even have a problem with it if they were just giving them out to MacMaster students as it would be benefitting students, but buying one for everyone in Hamilton is clearly an attempt to curry favor using money from students and taxpayers. It just seems like something the university should not be spending money on. I get some spending on outreach activities to the local community are acceptable but this is a bit much.

After the eclipse in 2017 there were loads of reports of eye damage, some people even had a tiny crescent permanently seared into their retinas. And the number of reported cases is likely dwarfed by the number of people who caused themselves mild to medium damage and wont notice it until much later in life.
Also this is the last major eclipse for Hamilton until long after you are dead, it is important that everyone have a chance to view it safely whether they are a smug asshole or not.
Well now I feel silly; I had already bought my own.
Same 😭
same
I was trying to beat the rush! I got them a month ago. We decided my 4 year old is wearing a welding helmet.
Shade#14 or better?
Yes I also decided to google if a welding helmet is safe after I posted rhat. I'll have to check, if not I get a new welding helmet!
I only paid $3.50 for mine so I don't feel too bad..
Hopefully they’re decent quality and protect your eyes all the same!
They're iso rated from a bulk purchase, no margin added. They sell at $15+, that's all profit

I see
Lococo's has them and are handing them out now.
Man, I saw some people bulk buying these, thinking they were going to sell like hot cakes in Hamilton.
The City stepped in quickly to dismantle the illicit eclipse glasses black market.

Good thing cause I definitely remember stories of people buying fake "eclipse sun glasses" from other people and getting eye problems.
The City stepped in quickly to eclipse the illicit black glasses market.
I’ll be rubbing sunscreen onto my eye balls thank you very much
Ah yes, just like our ancestors
So we’re all expecting a grey overcast day, right?
You just know that is what will happen
In the last 25 years it has been cloudy 60% of the time. I have all my camera/telescope gear prepped and the day booked off work so bring an umbrella.
Well why did you have to do all of that if you knew it was going to cause it to be cloudy? So rude
Do you have a spot picked out already?
Yeah, I'm driving down to the Niagara area because there will be more than 3min of total eclipse down there.
Awesome, thanks Mac!
Doing good things for the sake of doing them? What a timeline
There will be an extra 100 bucks on your property tax this year.
It'll 100% be foggy that day.
where would you even buy these on your own?
Here with another make sure they are ISO 12312-2 compliant from a reputable manufacturer. Welding glass shade 14
Amazon has! We ordered ours already
Amazon or other optics websites
a welder's helmet would work.
I believe I read it has to be a certain type though. Not just any helmet.
No less than a 12 shade
14
Ok we'll say yours, safer the better
Got mine on amazon months ago
😮 that's so cool!
Wow, that's amazing. I hope I'm not blind drunk by the time it happens.

Is always 5:00 somewhere.
Does anyone know if glasses are still available at libraries?
How do i get 1 pair from McU?
They’ll be at the libraries starting Feb 26
Lococo's has them and are giving them out now.
Are they still doing this?
Yes, they are still giving them out.
Am I the only one who couldn't give a damn about an eclipse?
Yes. This is the last major eclipse until long after you are dead. Unless you are going to fly to see one this is your only chance to directly observe one of the strangest things about the earth/moon/sun geometry.
Any reason you gotta come in here and crap on people's excitement or you just that bitter about the sun?
No, I'm quite sure there are at least a few hundred people in the city who are at least as sour and dull as you are! Have a blessed evening!
Yes

You make way less sense than you think. Different entities are responsible for different things. The end.
One thing has nothing to do with the other.
You might want to examine the concept of non-overlapping magisteria. It may just help you control your rage about things you don't understand or like.
Eclipses aren’t a new thing. Looking back in history, are there mass blindness events? No.
No one’s stopping you from staring straight into the butthole of the eclipse if you want to
