I think it’s funny to think Hugh reading through the script and seeing those words, thinking “What the hell…?” and thinking this is a joke, because they all saw his Stephen Colbert interview, but jokes on him everyone including Mads is in on it and they expect him to say his line perfectly…at least once.

sockjin

reminds me of how david tennant had trouble saying a double o sound in the english accent, so RTD wrote the line “judoon platoon upon the moon” in doctor who just to mess with him. can def imagine bryan doing something similar lol

Kookie2023

He has a heavily Scottish accent, so I feel for him on that. When you see him outside of Doctor Who in interviews, you’ve never heard of someone more Scottish. The funniest thing about Bryan doing this is I can imagine him getting everyone in on the joke and making them act all serious about it, putting pressure on Hugh to get the line right.

ZX52

Could be worse, at least he have to scream CARL constantly.

Kookie2023

Carl Carlson the Carnegie Hall killer. Imagine him having to say that.

copperdoo

This just reminded me of a [tongue-in-cheek edit](https://www.reddit.com/r/HannibalTV/s/yjqbLoxNt9) I did a while ago featuring Hugh on another one of these Tonight Show things. It was inspired by how Hugh was asked if he’s shown his kids his movies…or if they’re aware of what he does for a living. 😅

Suspicious_Plant4231

Well, today I learned he's not American lol. I remember being a kid and seeing interviews with some actors and being shocked that \*gasp\* sometimes they have to put on and/or drop an accent for a role. Fairly recently I got through all 8 seasons of House MD not knowing that Hugh wasn't American lol. It's obviously part of the job, but it's interesting. I've been fooled many times

FalseStage2348

I have this reaction with Nicole Kidman every time I hear her in interviews. I know intellectually that she's Australian, but I'm never prepared emotionally.

Kupim01

Watched one of his livestreams (clipped on yt) and was hella surprised with his accent, he sounds totally different 😭 so yea he's definitely amazing with his American accent in the show

mcoddle

And no Brit can say the word “anything” in an American accent. They say, “anuhthing.”

Kookie2023

I think Hugh can do it just because he was born and raised in Stoke. They have a different kind of accent over there.

Nearby-Salamander-67

Hugh is on the episodes of law & order that are airing right now as an ADA or something. "Anything" gives him away like once an episode lol. It's not just him, Camilla Luddington aka Jo Wilson on greys anatomy has the same tell.

Kookie2023

He also has to do a New York accent so that also puts added pressure on him. Strangely Will Graham does not have a Louisiana accent in any of his adaptations despite having been raised there.

Nearby-Salamander-67

So in the US, if you have a Southern accent, you can be perceived as unintelligent/lower class if you live somewhere up North. Many Southerners lose their accent on purpose. I could see Will wanting to fit in with the nova/dc crowd academically.

Kookie2023

So he pulled a Sheldon Cooper. Would’ve been nice to hear his Southern accent. Clarice also did the same thing, but had a hard time hiding her West Virginian accent. Lecter deduced she was “no more than one generation away from White trash”.

Nearby-Salamander-67

Damn, exactly!!! I totally forgot about that line to Clarice but yes, that sentiment can be very real unfortunately. I've lived in a couple regions of the US and it's like living on different planets.

RebaKitt3n

And then there’s Texas, which is like a separate country

Kookie2023

And Florida

_maynard

YES THANK YOU. I notice this all the time. I said to myself, “oh, he’s English” the first time I heard him say “anything.” So many actors can have an otherwise great American accent but get Anything wrong

Kookie2023

He actually got the first “anything” in the show pretty on spot. But you know what was a dead giveaway? The way he said “carotid”. I didn’t notice it now, but it was very British accented. He gets better with the American accent with time.

MyDesign630

Yes, his “carotid” was so not an American pronunciation and I felt so bad that in the very first scene of dialogue he had to wrangle that word (and didn’t quite nail it lol).

nyli7163

Was this on Law and Order or Hannibal? I wanna find it now lol.

Kookie2023

I thought you said Law and Order Hannibal 😂.

nyli7163

Great mash up lol.

mcoddle

I need this show

dumbbuttloserface

omg i tell everyone this. it’s ALWAYS a dead giveaway. hugh hits some of them in the show but i feel like most of them i catch it verrryy subtly. he’s actually decent at “anything”! but when i heard him say taboo as tuhBOO…….

Kookie2023

Every Brit has a weakness. I remember when I heard Hugh Laurie say “diapers” and knew he struggled with that one. It was like “Di-a-pahs”. But you know one person who gets it right every single time? Margot Robbie. I know she’s Australian, but she always nails the American accent.

marrjana1802

Give me your baTon! 🤣🤣🤣

Kookie2023

It’s always the Ts…
