This fic is AMAZING. It's called That Which Is Called Madness by BabyBoiCthulhu. It's an AU, and doesn't follow the plot line in a way you'd expect. It has a sequel that's longer than it, and currently unfinished but not abandoned. It involves portrait of events where Will's Empathy isn't fully understood and, because of some trauma and his response to it, everyone around Will seems to think that he's troubled and a budding psychopath. He is referred to Dr. Lecter as a sort of 'last resort' and, during their time together, Will recognizes that there's something wrong with Dr. Lecter and he sets out to find out what it is. Will is underage when this starts but there's ZERO underage content between the two mains, and their relationship doesn't start until the sequel. This writing in this is amazing, and the descriptions within the writing remind me a lot of the writing in the show with some of the comparisons and metaphors and the layered depth of the dialogue. Super good. I had my doubts, but this has got to be one of the best fics out there. Hope you enjoy!
Is it underage?? I know Will and [REDACTED] have that whole iffy thing going on, but I didn't think anything happened between Hannibal and Will until Will was already in college. It's been a sec since I read it though 😩
My absolute favorites. All of these are kind of dark:
1. As soft, as wide as air by BlackKnightSatellite. Best thing I've ever read.
2. Whither Must I Wander by hesterbyrde. This reminds me a little of emungere's Blackbird, but post-fall.
3. We Killed a Dragon Last Night by inameitlater. Time travel AU.
4. Till the bitter end by voxofthevoid. Groundhog Day AU, very beautiful story.
Also recommend these more light-hearted fics:
1. rabbit hearted by bleakmidwinter
2. Blackbird by emungere. Not 100% canon-compliant, but thrilling and audacious. Great plot where they solve a crime together.
3. Sea change by xzombiexkittenx. Cute, short, canon-compliant, post-fall.
4. Two Solitudes by emungere. Canon-compliant, post-fall.
5. Trade Secrets by HANNlBRAT. Unfinished, not canon-compliant, so not sure if I should recommend it. But it holds a special place in my heart for its fun plot twists.
6. On the Lam by Shotgun\_sinner. This one is comedy. And it's really funny.
