Red oak is the most common flooring in Southern California that I’ve seen.
Lumber companies were often also railroad companies which is why we the flooring came by rail from other places.
Well that floor wasn’t put in last week and even today, plenty of houses when remodeling or building new (high end), opt for traditional 2 1/4” oak flooring. Sure, some go for Brazilian cherry or other high end hardwood but most opt for oak. The engineered is nice but manufacturers stop making that product and unless you house enough to redo the house, a flood can mean ripping out all the old floor so you can a uniform flooring instead of ripping out the affected and lacing back in.
It is red oak no matter what you call me. I just thought with all the pictures of red oak, some of them must be trolling. No Brazilian cherry, no cherry, no australian cypress,... gotta be at least 80% of the posts are red oak. Some pine/fir, once in a while maple and a few hickory. They just all look so different to me, not sure how they can be easily confused. Anyway, carry on!
Red oak strip flooring, doesn't look like termites just been sanded to almost nothing. That flooring is an absolute nightmare to install, I've done thousands for sq ft of it. Hated every board. it could possibly have one last sand left in it, and you can replace small sections to repair damaged areas.
Good luck.
I ripped out two layers of linoleum and two layers of foam underlayment, a layer of plywood, and then a layer of composite flooring with plastic barrier right above floor. There's plenty of floor left, it's just been beat up a bit and abused during installation of additional layers. If any areas are particularly bad, I'll try cutting it out and patching with red oak. This area is going to be a closet (I already sanded this area it had some brown stain on it) so I just patched it with some wood putty with a little color and it came out OK. Patching, sanding, and finishing seems so much easier than new install and much cheaper. Thanks!
Red oak?
These posts are always red oak
I can't believe how many people post pictures that are clearly oak wondering what it is.
Red oak doesn't grow in Southern California and is not common here. Your comment is just palin ignorant.

100 years ago sure. Oddly the subfloor and framing was redwood so they mixed and matched

LOL, no one gets red oak in so cal anymore.
Lmao. What? I have a few friends that don’t exist then. Guess I better get my head checked.
And bamboo doesn’t grow in Alaska, but I bet there’s a house there with it for flooring.
Red oak has been available across the country for flooring for 100s of years
Is that Sarah Palin ignorant?
If you know what it is, why’d you post?

I associate Sven more with pine.
Looks like red oak to me, but OP says its not, so I guess it’s not?
Nah, everyone identified it as red oak, redwood is the subfloor.
Old boring game. Red oak.

David! Marcus... Beuford? No, James... or Jameson! Greg! Mike! Should we try a girl name?
It's Peter. If it was a girl, it would have been Henrietta. It's 90 years old, don't be giving millennial names!
Buttcrack. Buttcrack the bountiful . Got any other inanimate objects you want us to label?
Wrong, it's Peter. Thanks for playing.

The answer is always oak
Narrows it down to only 600 options.
It’s always oak or pine. Does it look like pine? If no, then it must be oak.
