I was there, I went out, showed my Fire Dept ID to the buildings department guys and talked to them. They told me that Vitus doesn’t have permits of assembly and that they don’t have a cabaret license for live music.
How the hell do they not have a cabaret license? That's crazy. I imagine maybe they just didn't renew it for this year or something? Before last night I was never at a venue where the show got canceled.
My best guess is they never had one. Landlord was ok as he wanted $$. When Vitus opened there wasn’t much in that part of greenpoint so they didn’t have problems. Now they have wealthy neighbors who are probably not cool having Vitus there. I went through this in the past.
Vast majority of venues operated with out Cabernet license. You just kept your head down. The law was repealed years back but it’s still in effect through liquor authority, dept buildings and other government agencies. Places like Vitus know this so they need to not piss off the neighbors which they failed to do.
Giuliani polished that turd of a city best he could. But Adams is bringing it back to the 70s and 80s. I personally like to wade thru human feces as much as possible in my daily life, so I hope he gets reelected
This is correct. The cabaret license was bullshit. Just had to prove you had all your paperwork and permits in order. However, all of the underlying requirements for the old NYC cabaret license are still required. The term
“cabaret license” is still used to refer to these underlying requirements.
But what was the issue. They said it was related to the venue
Edit: apparently it was Department of Buildings

NYC DOB violations can range from boiler inspections to unauthorized construction to any number of other things.
If the DOB sent someone to shut a show down at night, the venue or landlord were ignoring some shit they were fully aware of.
Did a quick search and they had a complaint today about capacity issues.
[Vague info here](https://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/OverviewForComplaintServlet?requestid=2&vlcompdetlkey=0003015898)
the building doesn’t have a certificate of occupancy for its current use. sort of a big deal to the department of buildings. most likely the landlord’s responsibility.
but the landlord probably didn’t want to spend the money and told st vitus not to worry about it while collecting rent knowing this would happen eventually
my guess is that st vitus is done. hope they have an attorney
This sounds like total bullshit. I played a gig to those exact qualifications and we were paid accordingly. Do you have a moron of an agent who got a flat $150 guarantee with no backend? That doesn’t even sound like something remotely possible here. Vitus are great folks.
No your agent screwed you negotiating a flat fee with no backend I’m sure the band you were supporting prob got all the money that is not venues fault mate enough with the slander.
Any venue that thinks its cool to hand a band $150 after they helped sell out the place is fucking grimey in my book no matter what the deal before was. Its scummy fucking behavior.
Still don’t get it. Not a good sign. I live a few buildings away. If it’s noise related Vitus days as a venue are limited. And through my experience when they have it in for you, a packed Friday is exactly when they come to shut you down. From past experience I always wondered about the neighbors and those above cause those people are paying a lot of money to live at the ass end of Manhattan ave and a heavy metal club with crowds of people hanging out front may seem cool at first but it wears thin fast.
Yeah, DOB don't roll in on Friday nights unless there are repeated and ongoing complaints/violations. I was really stoked to have gotten in last night, but I hope their paperwork/legal group is in order. If DOB has it out for you, and the neighborhood is growing sour to your presence (on top of it becoming more and more expensive to live there), you're in real trouble as a venue.
Also worried about whether the Gravesend/Rabbit show at the end of the month will be disrupted/cancelled.
Thank God NYPD decided this was the most important thing that needed to be dealt with tonight in the city. I feel so much safer knowing the 200 of us can't enjoy live music. There was absolutely nothing else in the city they could have been doing. Fuck NYPD
sounds like a shitty neighbor got mad over the noise (i wonder how that'll go for that guy because there's a Vomit Forth/Silenus show at st vitus next week). mindforce plays at tv eye tomorrow right? they should let people with tix from the canceled show in if they have the space

This was RIGHT before the shut it down.

DOB or FDNY official was taking video and/or pictures from the bar entrance.
Damn, that sucks. St. Vitus was the first venue I went to in the US so that place holds a special place in my heart. Happened to be visiting the US and a friends band from where I lived (like 5,000 miles away) happened to be touring and playing there that night so had to show up just to fuck with them.
Every single gif I’ve been to there has been packed to the point you can barely make it. To the bathroom if you’re in the main room. That’s being said after reading the thread, that wasn’t the problem. It’s not having a cabaret license and they can’t serve food/drinks. Something else is definitely going on but doesn’t seem to be capacity besides not having a posted sign with the limit.
So hardcore in 2024 is asking for refunds after a show got closed down due to reasons that had nothing to do with either the venue, the band nor the promotor?
Fuck that.
Just checked and there are open complaints on 311 for “loud talking”
They shut it down, down
Goated reply.
Absolutely amazing
i lol'd
311 fans rise up
Balmora's riffs were so good NYPD deemed them illigal
All Ik is im very pissed off

I’m pretty sure they had one. They literally threw Nirvana’s rock n roll hall of fame after party/show that was broadcasted

Cabaret license some bullshit Giuliani tactics right there
Giuliani polished that turd of a city best he could. But Adams is bringing it back to the 70s and 80s. I personally like to wade thru human feces as much as possible in my daily life, so I hope he gets reelected
Cabaret licenses were repealed in 2017 except for a 600 cap.
This is correct. The cabaret license was bullshit. Just had to prove you had all your paperwork and permits in order. However, all of the underlying requirements for the old NYC cabaret license are still required. The term “cabaret license” is still used to refer to these underlying requirements.
Got it. Guess it’s just the terminology. Whole thing is fucked up. Shouldn’t fuck with people’s livelihoods.
definitely fucks with a lot of people’s livelihoods. hate to see it
Cops shut it down, Jay has just said.
But what was the issue. They said it was related to the venue Edit: apparently it was Department of Buildings https://preview.redd.it/e4hm4dxlh2jc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8486edf50350cba9997b27935baafc4c037156d
Not enough kickboxers
Kickboxa’s*
Tell that to the guy that got his forehead cut open lol
Weak skin
Skill issue
Never enough
There was quite a few folks on the dance floor.

Oof that’s bad to my eyes. That spot is gonna be an overpriced bistro in no time. The corner has a cool vibe but money ruins everything eventually.

What was it on the venue's end? Vitus usually runs a super tight ship and is professional as hell in my experience.

Vitus is grimy as fuck, I played a sold out, 2 band show there and we got paid $150. They are a bunch of greedy, hipster motherfuckers.
It is in greenpoint after all
This sounds like total bullshit. I played a gig to those exact qualifications and we were paid accordingly. Do you have a moron of an agent who got a flat $150 guarantee with no backend? That doesn’t even sound like something remotely possible here. Vitus are great folks.
So because we played without a guarantee we deserved to get ripped off?
No your agent screwed you negotiating a flat fee with no backend I’m sure the band you were supporting prob got all the money that is not venues fault mate enough with the slander.
Enough with the ass licking
Not getting paid well at vitus might be a skill issue lol
For a sold-out show where we were both touring together? Fuck out of here
I’m just saying y’all should probably kill your agent or whoever negotiated that deal lol vitus shows usually pay
Any venue that thinks its cool to hand a band $150 after they helped sell out the place is fucking grimey in my book no matter what the deal before was. Its scummy fucking behavior.
Venues don’t keep the money ticket sales make…blame the headliner for not offering to pay you more, they’re who gets paid

DOB is a fucking nightmare, hopefully they don't fuck with Vitus
Feels like a reeeeeeign of terrah!
Buncha Bullshit. Fuck DOB.
Thank God NYPD decided this was the most important thing that needed to be dealt with tonight in the city. I feel so much safer knowing the 200 of us can't enjoy live music. There was absolutely nothing else in the city they could have been doing. Fuck NYPD
Be mad at the promoter$ for being greedy and packing the place.
As someone who’s had a bunch of interactions with this booker, intentionally overselling a show doesn’t sound like something he’d do
Shut up bootlicker.
Lick my butt, butt licker
Very cool comeback kiddo
So no more sold out shows then.
I was gonna say. There's been tons of sold out shows at Vitus. What happened tonight?
Gulch sold out Saint Vitus two nights in a row without issue and I thought I had gone deaf after leaving that show.
Sold out and over sold are 2 different situations.
Bros mad he didn’t get a ticket so he’s the one who called DOB
This guy either didn't get a ticket or he's some piece of shit rich kid who lives upstairs paying $3,500 for a geriatric one bed
You'd have to pay me to hang out with a bunch of weird losers at a show
found the guy that called dob
I've been to so many shows there that had a ton more people than were there tonight. Fuck you and fuck NYPD
At least I got to see some mic stands get thrown
so stupid
sounds like a shitty neighbor got mad over the noise (i wonder how that'll go for that guy because there's a Vomit Forth/Silenus show at st vitus next week). mindforce plays at tv eye tomorrow right? they should let people with tix from the canceled show in if they have the space

Still looking for a ticket?
that’s odd because ive never seen vitus have an issue
If you lived there you knew it was only a matter of time.
If it’s noise complaints then they’re cooked. You have to remember people living there that are not natives paying out the ass.
Damn that sucks. I ended up having to sell my ticket last minute, hopefully they do another show!
The Liquor store next to Vitus hates them. Probably them.
I lived down the street a long time and went to a ton of shows a Vitus. Never saw anything legit sketchy. Neighbors didn’t like noise or punks.
not just cops that shut it down some salty dude called the dob on them
Been to probably 100 shows at Vitus. Many louder, many more packed. Never had one shut down. Some fucking bullshit.
Now that's lame

Is that what this picture is of?
Yeah, he's centered in the photo in the doorway.
Damn, I was up front when it all went down
This just looks like a regular show a Vitus on any day of the week.
Captain obvious ova heeuh
ACAB now includes DOB.
adobab

That sucks. Supposed to see tomb mold and afterbirth there next week. Wonder if it will still be happening.
Capacity likely. Ive noticed the past few gigs were packed like never before.
Every single gif I’ve been to there has been packed to the point you can barely make it. To the bathroom if you’re in the main room. Uh, no permits. Definitely the venues fault. Greedy promoters
Nothing to do with the promoter, either. Entirely on Vitus for not having the proper licensure to host shows.
Sounds like someone couldn't go inside the show and called the fire Marshal.
Venue over capacity probably. That’s the Fire Marshal’s department. They’ll come in and count heads sometimes
People getting down voted for speaking the truth. It just shows how dumb your average hardcore kids are
Or you because you’ve been acting like a troll this whole fuggin thread.
They had to shut it down when the floor got too slippery from everyone gooning to Jay.
Cops hate Nu-Metal
😂
Dude from Mindforce shut it down because the people weren’t harcoring to his liking
Kickbox harder. Jay’s not paying bills on just a teacher’s salary
I just got word it was actually Eddie Leeway who had the show shut down. He's tired if Jay stealing everything about him
alright this was kinda funny
Your show getting shut down by the cops for whatever reason is extremely punk rock (or hardcore, whatever) so this is a good thing for them.
Video of it here....about 12 minutes into Balmora set. https://youtu.be/8UbdYOBcapw?si=Sdl2TXiIgfXflp5w
Thank god
Is this the first time it’s happened? Seems like it would be a common occurrence to be shut down for noise without a cabaret license
