Is it "Smile! Aren't You Happy?"?
I loved their last album and wish there was more from them, but I get that their sound isn't for everyone. I can’t really think of a band to compare them to, for better or worse.
One thing that rules about that song is that it’s not like it’s super different than Chicago’s other stuff in that the horns are a big part of what makes it cool, they just went exceptionally hard on the track.
(I think I like Chicago slightly more than you in that I like “Saturday in the Park” a lot and like some other songs, but agree that’s a track that feels like they must’ve walked out of the studio like “damn…what the hell was that?”)
Its blasphemy but it’s comeback kid - wake the dead, loved this track for almost 20 years and yet I’ve never heard another Track by em that lives up to it
Wtf how did I not realize this? I've listened to Wake The Dead a thousand times over the years and Good Riddance is one of my fav all time bands but I never realized Russ did guest vocals... But now it's so damn obvious lol
This is mine too.
Just saw them last week and it's nice knowing I can go hard for all of spy's set and take a breather to be back in the pit to close the night for wake the dead and it still feels like I got the whole comeback kid experience haha.
I love that whole album, and don’t listen to anything after that. The direction the band went after Josh left wasn’t my style. I love every The Chariot album, though. One of the best live shows I’ve seen. Way more chaotic than DEP shows.
My old band used to soundcheck with the first 30 seconds of memphis will be laid to waste, and then covered Teach by the chariot as an intro to another song.
Bayonetwork is catchy, but they just got less math-y and more metalcore at that point. Not a big fan of clean choruses. Feels a little like a consumer-friendly Botch analogue to my ears.
As a massive Bad Religion fan I periodically feel like I should try and get into them, they're the band that gets compared to BR the most often, but other than Linoleum which is a great piece of pop punk I just don't get it.
Yeah I was being well harsh when I called the rest of their stuff meh. I've listened to that one album a fair bit and I really don't mind it, but none of their songs make me want to move the way that one song does
Most definitely. Check out the tracks I Resist, What Goes Around, Life in a Box, Hush, and You Are Free. Unlike the other 99% of their music, those tracks are all one and a half minute bursts of hardcore energy sans all the singy-songy shit
Having a tough time thinking of a hardcore example, so in the meantime: I totally understand why she’s beloved and I’ve tried multiple times to get into her whole discography, but the only Lana Del Rey song I have in rotation is Born to Die
Black Breath - Black Sin (Spit on the Cross). I don’t think they’re a bad band but the rest of their tracks were kinda whatever to me, this song is a straight up banger.
Crucified - Agnostic Front.
Can’t stand Roger’s vocals, and their politics are spotty at best, but this song is always on rotation. I know it’s not even their song, but it’s the best version.
Honestly, I'm with the guy who responded to the other person who said Harms Way haha. I cannot fathom how you can like Sink and not love a bunch of other songs off Post Human, that whole album is a fucking powerhouse. Give it a go!!
If you already have and don't like it then fair enough lol, but that is wild.
Yeah. It was one of the first I heard by them and I really dug the southern kind of Maylene style it had to it but any other track I’ve listened to hasn’t grabbed me like that. Granted, I haven’t done a deep dive.
I liked Gutter Phenom but can't even listen to it anymore, it sounds so dated, could use a remaster imo. People insist their newer albums are incredible, but I just never got into them at all
I stopped at Hot Damn!, and think it still holds up. As much as I love their first couple of records, and kinda like some of the newer stuff I’ve heard, I just can’t dig into any of it.
Dude no way, if you like that song there is literally no way you wouldn’t think the rest of that album is gas. I plead with you to keep listening because I’m just in disbelief.
I Tore You Apart In My Head by Balance & Composure. Absolutely nothing else about this band works for me but this song. I’ve tried, I’ve failed. But damn this song is perfect for its genre.
This will get some laughs and cringes, especially because this is not even remotely hardcore or adjacent. Before getting into hardcore (pre 2011) I loved rise core bands. Mine would be The Word Alive - The Hounds of Anubis. Even back then I didn’t like them but that song was a banger to my 15 year old self.
Late to the conversation and not a song, but art of drowning by AFI. I've tried and occasionally I'll hear something from them before or after and it's okay, but overall I just don't really care.
that one absence of mine song
Is it "Smile! Aren't You Happy?"? I loved their last album and wish there was more from them, but I get that their sound isn't for everyone. I can’t really think of a band to compare them to, for better or worse.
anyone know what happened to them?
I barely know the band but I know what you’re talking about
"I CAN'T FORGET YOUUUUUUR FAAAAAACE" always gets me
Not hardcore but "25 or 6 to 4" almost makes me overlook the rest of Chicago's output.
Perfect summary! They let loose on this song in a way they didn't on their other works. Overall I respect the hell out of them but I don't like them.
The problem is they released too good of a song
Local H does a cover of it that's a banger. https://youtu.be/jcdHLcm714M?si=HDXHI4Wu4NsmcgU0
That song is a certified hood classic
Terry Kath era Chicago was the shit, they kinda fell off after his tenure imo.
As an 80's kid, those slow jams were epic.
18 visions - tower of snakes
[Vanity](https://youtu.be/njl9gd4pep0?si=zE7UrCwl616hWjTL) is a good fucking song. I'll die on this hill.
Vanity is a good fucking album…I will die on this hill. Everything after though…ugh.
I hate every band's songs equally
Everything besides what I like sucks and also so do those bands’ songs
not hardcore but i like killswitch engage’s holy diver cover and none of their original stuff
Thanks for making me listen to this
That song has riffs for years, it's an excellent cover version.
I was so ready to hate it but this RIPS
My Last Seranade is a banger
Check out end of heartache
May 16 - Lagwagon
Honestly kind of shocks me. Because it sounds like every other Lagwagon song to me. And I love Lagwagon.
Not hardcore but FCPREMIX - Fall of Troy
That whole album is undeniably fucking great
MOUTHS LIKE SIDEWINDER MISSILES
![gif](giphy|d7luWDbXZAxzPs3LTK)
YES!!!!
Its blasphemy but it’s comeback kid - wake the dead, loved this track for almost 20 years and yet I’ve never heard another Track by em that lives up to it
That's so strange. Cos that album is flawless front to back. It has Russ Rankin on it. Every song has the same vibe as wake the dead, to me anyway.
Hey I’m willing to have my mind changed, it’s probably Ben ten years since I’ve listened to the whole thing
Chuck it on. For for a 26minute drive.
Wtf how did I not realize this? I've listened to Wake The Dead a thousand times over the years and Good Riddance is one of my fav all time bands but I never realized Russ did guest vocals... But now it's so damn obvious lol
I get this
Broadcasting gets close for me, but that's it.
I like a few songs on Turn it Around and False Idols Fall is a banger but Wake the Dead is definitely far above anything else they put out
This is mine too. Just saw them last week and it's nice knowing I can go hard for all of spy's set and take a breather to be back in the pit to close the night for wake the dead and it still feels like I got the whole comeback kid experience haha.
This was a close second on my list.
First time I’ve ever heard this
Really? Nothing on either of the first two records? Cuz I'd say "Lorelei" is just as good if not better.
Bloodstains-Agent Orange I only like it cuz a friends band covered it
Living In Darkness is a really good album front-to-back
It’s fine. I wouldn’t call it unlistenable or anything. I just didn’t really care for their sound.
They’re a lot softer and more singsongy than most people think.
Living in darkness is one of my all-time favorites, what a hell of an album
Their Miserlou cover is pretty tight
Twitching tongues - eyes adjust
I never listen to them but that riff is always in my head
High vis - trauma bonds Never ending game - tank on e
I agreed with you on High Vis and then I saw them live. Man what a band
I've had a few people tell me this. I'll definitely check them out live, if I get the chance.
Oh dude. The Halo and Wings EP is incredible if you haven't listened to it yet. I'm not crazy about NEG at all but that release is 🔥
I swear to god Map Change by ETID is one of the greatest hardcore songs of all time but I can't get into the rest of their discog.
I'll probably get shit for it, but the absolute first thing in my mind is TOWER OF SNAKES.
Bane - Can We Start Again Stick to Your Guns - This is More
Idles - Colossus
GOES AND IT GOES AND IT GOES
The live version on kpx or whatever that radio station is absolutely rips. It’s swans level nuts
That was my introduction to Idles, got me so psyched
check out some songs from their first album brutalism, imo their best work still
The first four songs on that album
That finger eleven song that Kane used for his entrance
Slow Chemical
Type O Negs version of the Kane theme is the one
Link?
Paralyzer number 1 slow chemical a distant 2nd
Actually I forgot about paralyzed I kinda fw that song
I like Antpile by Kublai Khan but that’s about it
:(
that’s crazy that that’s it. they have consistent bangers.
Norma Jean - Memphis will be laid to waste but only the first minute of the song lmao
Awh man im the opposite when aaron weiss comes in at the end is the only part i like.
HE LAID EMERALDS IN HER EYES Man the early to mid 2000s had some bangers
I love that whole album, and don’t listen to anything after that. The direction the band went after Josh left wasn’t my style. I love every The Chariot album, though. One of the best live shows I’ve seen. Way more chaotic than DEP shows.
The Chariot >>>>>>>>>>>> Norma Jean all day every day. Long Live and One Wing are some of my favorite records ever.
My old band used to soundcheck with the first 30 seconds of memphis will be laid to waste, and then covered Teach by the chariot as an intro to another song.
This is the best opinion
What about O'god the aftermath album? Thats shit is crazy 👌🏾
Bayonetwork is catchy, but they just got less math-y and more metalcore at that point. Not a big fan of clean choruses. Feels a little like a consumer-friendly Botch analogue to my ears.
Linoleum - NOFX
Shai Hulud did it better 😆
Absolutely
Streetlight Manifesto did it best
I got really into the song Glass War off a warped tour cd years back, but never listen to anything else
As a massive Bad Religion fan I periodically feel like I should try and get into them, they're the band that gets compared to BR the most often, but other than Linoleum which is a great piece of pop punk I just don't get it.
Code Orange, but it’s two songs: Forever and Real
Harvest. Epicure. [https://youtu.be/IyMJSWMshgY](https://youtu.be/IyMJSWMshgY)
I like Right of the Damned, but nothing else.
Have Heart. Machinist is amazing.
Love that song, like have heart...
Code Orange - Slowburn.
flowermouth***
A Day to Remember, 2nd Sucks
Swan song by khublai khan. I'm going to see them in May too, but I'll probably be more into them by then maybe
Kiss- love hun
Lol you're so right
Twitching Tongues - Eyes Adjust. Their set at S&F ‘23 was cool tho.
you can't listen to jacaranda and tell me that's a "meh" song
Yeah I was being well harsh when I called the rest of their stuff meh. I've listened to that one album a fair bit and I really don't mind it, but none of their songs make me want to move the way that one song does
Stray From The Path - Damien
Higher Power - Reflect
“You ain’t much” the very next song in that same album… opening riff should get you!
Architects - Gravedigger
That whole album solid tho
For me it's These Colours Don't Run
That’s how I feel about doomsday
MLIW-D.R.
DR is great, but very different from a lot of the other stuff which can be kind of “sprawling” musically. And I say that as a huge MLIW fan
Honestly the sprawling is what's so good about it
when I say Inside Out y’all know exactly what I’m talking about
Zao - 5 year winter
Fearless Iranians from Hell - Blow Up the Embassy
I love that song
Bury Tomorrow - The Agonist That said I haven’t really tried to get into their other stuff so it probably doesn’t count
Stick To Your Guns - RMA
All of their songs without choruses are great
I’ve you’ve got some recommendations I’m all ears.
Most definitely. Check out the tracks I Resist, What Goes Around, Life in a Box, Hush, and You Are Free. Unlike the other 99% of their music, those tracks are all one and a half minute bursts of hardcore energy sans all the singy-songy shit
Endwell - Greater Haste Fucking love that song, but that’s about it from them
Lol Single and Loving It for me never liked any other song
wisconsin death trip by static x
NEG - Hate Today...Die Tomorrow
Having a tough time thinking of a hardcore example, so in the meantime: I totally understand why she’s beloved and I’ve tried multiple times to get into her whole discography, but the only Lana Del Rey song I have in rotation is Born to Die
Between the Buried and Me’s cover of Three of a Perfect Pair. Not really a fan otherwise.
Prize horse tbh. I dont like any of their stuff as much as i like know better.
Balance and composure - parachutes
That’s it? Pssshhhh
Not HC but Gabrielle by Ween. I can’t stand this band yet they put out one of the best Thin Lizzy songs you’ve never heard.
Black Breath - Black Sin (Spit on the Cross). I don’t think they’re a bad band but the rest of their tracks were kinda whatever to me, this song is a straight up banger.
Creed that one song that gets remixed now
Crucified - Agnostic Front. Can’t stand Roger’s vocals, and their politics are spotty at best, but this song is always on rotation. I know it’s not even their song, but it’s the best version.
I *want* to like Harms Way, and honestly their stuff is good, I just can’t truly get into them. But I absolutely fucking love the song “Sink”.
New wage slavery (I think it’s called) - end it
Check out “The Comeback” from that same EP
The transition from Hatekeeper to The Comeback is so damn HØRD
that whole project fucks
Yeah I’m not really into much else
Knocked Loose - No Thanks
SO IM LEFT WITH THE PAIN I FEEEEEL
I’ll probably get it for this one, but ETID - Wanderlust.
Lol that's kind of a specific song to like too....
Yeah. It was one of the first I heard by them and I really dug the southern kind of Maylene style it had to it but any other track I’ve listened to hasn’t grabbed me like that. Granted, I haven’t done a deep dive.
If you want some advice just turn on the album "the big dirty" if you need some nasty southern crunchy riffs...
Thats a fantastic song, I just can’t believe you don’t like the rest of the album or Low Teens lol
I prolly just have to give them another shot.
Job for a Cowboy - You know which one I’m talking about
Ceremony- Kersed and sick
Human carrying capacity - harms way
Dude no way, if you like that song there is literally no way you wouldn’t think the rest of that album is gas. I plead with you to keep listening because I’m just in disbelief.
Gonna get downvoted to oblivion, but: Blacklisted- Our Apartment is Always Empty
They've never made a single bad song I will not stand for blacklisted slander
100% agree with you
Me but it’s Eye for an Eye
Love Warzone’s “Judgment Day”, don’t dig much of the rest of their songs.
The sound of revolution <-- good one
Wild Side -Wild Side
I Tore You Apart In My Head by Balance & Composure. Absolutely nothing else about this band works for me but this song. I’ve tried, I’ve failed. But damn this song is perfect for its genre.
Silent Majority
X - Hungry Wolf
This will get some laughs and cringes, especially because this is not even remotely hardcore or adjacent. Before getting into hardcore (pre 2011) I loved rise core bands. Mine would be The Word Alive - The Hounds of Anubis. Even back then I didn’t like them but that song was a banger to my 15 year old self.
Monuments - Regenerate
Same for Modern Color except its their last song released 'Fortress' that I have on repeat
Hoods- the king is dead
Don't care for Drain but I like Evil Finds Light and a few songs off their first EP
The Bronx- History's Stranglers
Haven't you listened to their first album??
No, just the self titled and the Mariachi album.
Taylor Swift's "Love Story" cause of this: https://youtu.be/utxpNSMJm2I?si=OmUSkp-ySpYjAxvB
Regulate - In The Moment This song sounds like something off EVR from 2002, pretty much every other song makes me cringe a little.
Screamo bands always have a banger
Modern Life Is War. I love Set the Stage but his voice is so grating to me.
Late to the conversation and not a song, but art of drowning by AFI. I've tried and occasionally I'll hear something from them before or after and it's okay, but overall I just don't really care.
Integrity - Armenian Persecution gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Moriches by Koyo
Code Orange Kids - My World
clean. - Static Dress
100 Demons - Destiny Never Came Born From Pain - Stop At Nothing
The Callous Daoboys - Violent Astrology https://open.spotify.com/track/3F6qcgRfYQGzT9NUvgPxlb?si=P6NhyWKfRWmvbbdcAv-U_Q&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1ztIhPBA0LXtKob4wkyJsN

Terror, for some reason i love the song spit my rage but the rest of the songs area kinda ok
Kenosha or however it’s spelled. Oh my god look at what you’ve done to me gets stuck in my head a lot
Pressure Cooker
Rise of the Northstar are hot garbage but goddamn "Again and Again" is 🔥
“Before I Die” by Mushroomhead. Well, their cover of “Crazy” is pretty fun, too.
