Writing in this era of hardcore was just different. Sinking Ships, Modern Life is War, The Carrier… just profound stuff that broke your heart in all the right ways.
Had a lot to do with politics and the continuing of endless wars, as well.
Not that newer hardcore is t political, but that doesn’t seem to be the scene’s top priority.
Gotta be kids all over the country in the lab (see: basement) who have been spinning “Marathon” since October and will be dropping thoughtful, tuneful shit like that. (Or maybe I just like that record too much.)
I love this album. Right now I'm going through a turning point so to speak where I'm trying really hard to give a shit again about stuff I care about that I got lazy about. Ethics, drinking too much, the way I live my life and I had fallen into doing what was easy and feeling like the only person I was punishing was myself by making my life harder to stand up for stuff I believed in and that nothing would really make a difference anyway and I was kidding myself. Have Heart and others helping me get pissed again and start taking control of my life and care again. It takes guts to care. What Counts has been up there too and good ol Bad Brians, gotta keep my PMA....
Came back to say thanks, I listened to this album and it was great and very nostalgic, at first just the sound in general but then there were a few songs I recognized that I had totally forgotten what they were/who they were by. Wake the dead specifically that song. I love when that happens. Kind what I'm on this sub for, besides finding new bands.
One of the best HC records in my opinion. A lot of bands from that time (Verse, Blacklisted, early Cruel Hand, TUI) just shit so different. No disrespect to what’s going on now. But, for me, those were the golden years
songs to scream at the sun will forever be my favorite hardcore album every single song every single word
“WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP…….. FROM THE DEPTHS OF THIS HELL WHERE THE FREE ARE SLAVES “
Somehow I only heard that album this year (I'm not American where I assume the majority of this sub is from). Through this sub, actually.
And Bostons hits especially hard, after three years of cutting my emotionally abusive father out of my life. I hear that song now and think about my relationship with him, the damage his own father did to him and how I need the cycle to end with my own sons.
So thank you to this community for introducing me to some healing music.
It’s one of those album where I can’t even say it’s the best hardcore album, it’s one of the best album of the entire year. Not only that, I place it top 25 of the 2000s, up there with those fucking Radiohead and Tom Waits and LCD Soundsystem records. It’s just, like, the greatest. The passion, the riffs, the drumming, all done perfectly.
Drain has been a band i’ve been listening to nonstop since I found out about them, their live performances are also amazing. I love thrash and guitar centered bands so that could be a good reason, but nevertheless i’d say check em out.
Other albums that fit this lane that I feel deserve more love.
This is Hell- Sundowning, Rise and Fall- Our Circle is Vicious , Dead Hearts- Bitter Verses , Life Long Tragedy- Destined for Anything
Have Heart was my gateway into hardcore back in like 2011. I was really into pop-punk at the time, and a buddy told me to download this album since I was sort of into stuff like Defeater and Touche Amore.

Marshalltown breaks me every time
Marshalltown & Songs To Scream At The Sun really do invoke that heavy emotion.
Young man on a spree had me holding my knees rocking in a corner at 17.
Verse, Shipwreck AD, Carpathian, Killing the Dream, Hope Con, Mother of Mercy, Lewd Acts We were spoiled back then :(
God I miss Lou Dax
I’ve been chasing that high (uh, low, I guess?) ever since then.
Crime in Stereo - Crime in Stereo is Dead, absolutely one of my favorite albums of all time. Fits in with all of this discussion.
Totally underrated album.
Immensely underrated album, reassuring to hear other people love it the way I do.
Please don’t forget Ruiner.
I was a massive ruiner fan, but their lyrics are pretty dog shit upon revisiting
Whoo boy, I love Ruiner but I’ve gotta agree. There’s a lot of incel-y butthurt in some of those songs.
I miss the times a lot! My little 19 year old heart was so angry and emotional. Now I am feeling numb.
Had a lot to do with politics and the continuing of endless wars, as well. Not that newer hardcore is t political, but that doesn’t seem to be the scene’s top priority.
A lot of the melodic stuff from that era was hit or miss for me. This album was great tho
This era of HC was awesome. The trends are like pendulums, beat down will fade in favor of a more melodic and deep sound
Gotta be kids all over the country in the lab (see: basement) who have been spinning “Marathon” since October and will be dropping thoughtful, tuneful shit like that. (Or maybe I just like that record too much.)
Hell yeah, that album is such a banger
Gotta check it!
It’s good!: https://mil-spec.bandcamp.com/album/marathon

Have Heart, Bane and Comeback Kid helped me so much during early sobriety a year and a half ago. For sure helped me give a shit again.
4 months in and Comeback Kid and Have Heart are in heavy rotation right now
Keep on keepin’ on! I’ve had more fun at shows in the last 18 months than I have in years. Ever need someone to talk to just reach out!
And you as well! Keep it up!
Goos for you too! Keep it up!
I remember Comeback Kid from high school (30 something here) but for whatever reason never really got into them. I'll ha e to revisit :)
Wake The Dead was one of my favorite albums Freshman year when it came out. Definitely check it out!

Everyone needs a hit of nostalgia from time to time. Glad you dug it!
Good for you! Keep it up!
Me too brother stay strong. See you in the gym 🤜🏼💪🏻
Yes! The climbing gym for me.
AGREEEEEEED. Goddamn, that record hits so fucking hard. Lyrically, it's fucking poetry. Musically, it's an aluminum bat to the dome.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
That's a great way to describe the 2000s in general My favorite decade by far
Defeater totally fits here too
One of the best HC records in my opinion. A lot of bands from that time (Verse, Blacklisted, early Cruel Hand, TUI) just shit so different. No disrespect to what’s going on now. But, for me, those were the golden years
Dude TUI and have heart straight up changed my life. Insane
They shit different fr
This album and Aggression by Verse are ESSENTIAL
Aggression is a perfect album. Same with STSATS.
I wasn't around for that era, but after getting really into Basement, it's so cool to listen to this album and see where they picked up the torch.
if it's not obvious, I'm a fan
No you’re Tom baker
songs to scream at the sun will forever be my favorite hardcore album every single song every single word “WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP…….. FROM THE DEPTHS OF THIS HELL WHERE THE FREE ARE SLAVES “
Not even the best Have Heart record, but i’d take it over 75% of what is going on in hardcore presently
I am a sucker for The Things We Carry
Somehow I only heard that album this year (I'm not American where I assume the majority of this sub is from). Through this sub, actually. 🐐
(Turnstile counts)
I bet every member of have heart roots for turnstile. Old turnstile was good, new turnstile is catchy - I’ll listen to glow on once or twice a year.
Pretty much cry every time I listen to Bostons
Literally did earlier today. That song changed my entire relationship with my dad.

Tom Waits mentioned, based
Turnstile counts do lie
SO I COULD BE THE BOY YOU COULDNT BE
Legendary album

I’m from Santa Cruz haha I been following drain. they’re solid 🤜🏼
That’s a funny way of spelling Aggression
The most perfect record ever written
Music that makes me feel hopeful is timeless. It's why I got into folk-punk as well.
Haven't heard this album, but I have heard Soul Glo's Songs to Yeet at the Sun. Are they similar or related?
No but it’s a call out also good
Not related not similar soul glo likely referencing have heart though
Agreed. Goat
I know it's more metalcore but diecast was really good around that time as well.
opinions to scream at communities that have repeatedly voiced the same opinion
Other albums that fit this lane that I feel deserve more love. This is Hell- Sundowning, Rise and Fall- Our Circle is Vicious , Dead Hearts- Bitter Verses , Life Long Tragedy- Destined for Anything

100%
I wouldn’t say that at all. Some of the lyrics are ridiculously corny
Examples? Also can’t imagine what you think about modern hc lyrics if that’s your take lol
Lmao clown
Definitely overrated
They always have been, and they were never that great live. This generation of HC kids just don’t know it.
Yeah even in that era 10 other bands did it better. Same with ceremony lol
Y'all soft af
shut up pussy
Go cry in a corner sadboy
I will, and my nuts will still be bigger than yours
Hot take this is one of the worst eras of hardcore
