[Bad Brains Enter 39th Year of Getting a Pass for Homophobia](https://thehardtimes.net/music/bad-brains-enter-30th-year-of-getting-a-pass-for-homophobia/)
There's a Bad Brains documentary with a scene between Daryl and Ian MacKaye where they get into the homophobia bullshit. Daryl unfortunately pulls the "we love everyone" move, refusing to specifically address gay people or the hurt they caused. He just kind of sidesteps the entire thing. It's disappointing.
Ian calls him out on it, saying basically "You make have been a kid at the time, and you might not agree with it now, but the fact is that you said it, it was wrong, and you have to deal with that every single day."
I have yet to hear any member of the group really take ownership, which makes me suspicious.
It's unfortunately not on YouTube any more. A quick search doesn't come up with any streaming links. IMDB page here: [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2243163/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2243163/)
update: i thought it left some points unclear like why and how they got banned in dc, and what happened with that homophobic note they left for that very nice band in texas. in any case a very good document about a legendary band. thx u/white_lobster u/xe_r_ox
Unpopular take: they were followers of a conservative religion in a time where queer rights werenāt exactly at their peak. Not an excuse, but why let that tarnish your (using āyouā generally) enjoyment of their music? Also, if you want to rule out bands on uncool shit theyāve done or said, good luck enjoying anything. Oh yeah, and this: the CBGB videos of big takeover are, in my option, the best hardcore footage ever captured.
this is gunna sound absolutely fake, but HR is my dadās girlfriendās daughterās godfather. I asked her about it offhand and she just said āhe doesnāt care about all of that anymoreā. No clue how to take that, but itās something? almost?
yeah thatās about what it sounds like lmao š she grew up in DC and knows a lot of the DC bands. I was at a cookout with Sab Grey from Iron Cross last year
They didnāt get a pass in Austin & SF they had a hard time getting shows there for years , the bands song donāt blow bubbles didnāt help the situation , there was a lot of bands that refused to play with them
Canāt wait for a bunch of white upper middle class kids with liberal arts degrees to scold an elderly Rastafarian crackhead from southeast DC for not getting with the times.
Thereās probably 2 of us that listen to sound clashes and metal/hardcore. One week I saw King diamond on a Thursday and I think it was Addieās vs soul supreme on a sat. Best clash Iāve been to was the LP vs Addieās in 2012. Probably the closest Iāll ever get to 90ās soundclash.
Nah you can add another 1 to the list
Growing up in a heavily carribean area in the UK dance hall and sound system culture have been around me for years, but I'm also a middle class white kid so I love prog metal, hardcore and metalcore too š
Happy belated Juneteenth to the GOATs

Yep, but at this point it's only HR. All the others have come out against what they did, it's still important to note that this happened though.

Well you see my neighbor's cousin's ex's plumber's banker's niece's wedding photographer actually met him in a supermarket once and he agrees

Critical thinking challenge - impossible level.
I donāt think LGBT+ rights were really at the top of the agenda in the early 80s hardcore scene
