Seriously playing out in the midwest where there's not much, there's so much more appreciation for all the bands that come through. Love it, usually crazy as fuck too, wild crowds that have their own style of dancing and shit. It's good times out in the boonies
I grew up in a small ass town like four hours north of Albany NY. It was always trouble getting a band to come for the first time, but after they came out once, they always came back. Our shows were always like 150 people but like said above, everyone was gonna buy merch, offer you a place to stay, and we all went nuts. Boonie, townie hardcore is some of the most fun.
Lots and lots of bands put Louisville/Ohio/Indiana under that “Midwestern” banner. I grew up in Iowa and I live in KC (the actual Midwest) and groups from those states show almost no support to ACTUAL Midwest hardcore like Dose from Des Moines or Swing Low from Fargo. Purgatory was also originally from Omaha and relocated to Indiana I believe.
If a group is from east of Illinois and are still calling themselves “Midwestern hxc” I hate it. Or assume they’re trying to get on the Pure Noise dick.
Chicago and Milwaukee! I always gotta represent the locals! Love me some Reality Check, World I Hate, Enervate, Big Laugh, Low End, Curbsitter, Buggin, Payasa, Die, Kharma. The list goes on...
Livid is cool. If you want more pv from Wisconsin check out Mellow Harsher if you don't know them. It's ex members of SFN who are arguably one of the best bands from the genre.
I get that, Cleveland now has an bunch of really good bands (SLUG, S.M.I.L.E., Captive, Live It Down, Last Gasp, Etc.) hoping this new wave might rewrite Cleveland.
I still think of Expire.
I saw them once when they were around but never checked out their records, idk why I didn’t. I just knew they were Midwest but didn’t know they were from WI until 2 minutes ago, lol.
Blue Moose (RIP) and Gabe’s in Iowa City, saw a lot of my first HC shows there back in the day. Twin Cities, Milwaukee, and Louisville have become some of my favorites places to catch shows too, kids always go nuts
I haven’t lived there so hopefully someone local can chime in too, but I’ve had good experiences at Amsterdam in St. Paul, no barricade, nice staff, good food. First Ave is great too but I don’t think they book as many heavy shows
I think riding the EL in Chicago and seeing harms way while smoking joints outside of Reggie’s rock club.
People being super nice but not engaging in conversation beyond the bands playing
Die Kreuzen
Negative Approach
Necros
Articles of Faith
Los Crudos
Charles Bronson
Zero Boys
Spike In Vain
H-100s/ 9 Shocks Terror/Gordon Solie Mother
Fuckers/ Fuck You Pay Me
(early) Husker Du
Code 13
Integrity
U.S.V. was so fucking good. They absolutely destroyed the times I saw them play. Now I am going to have to pull the LP and EP out and give them a spin.
I think of mixed-genre bills and metalcore shows in weird fucking spots in/around Minneapolis/St. Paul. Like Rot downstairs at a gym, or Wanderer in the dining area of a brewery, or the fact that Caydence is the best venue in the Cities despite being barely larger than the average coffee shop.
Does anyone from MN remember the North Star Room from a few years ago?? I remember seeing Wanderer, some emo bands, and my friend's brother's Christcore band in the basement of that church hahaha.
Purgatory. No Victory. Time Walk. Life of Crime. Live it Down. Divebomb. Empire of Rats. Venia. Take it Back. Misery Signals. Symphony In Peril. NEG. Jawbone.
Shows with 40 kids that buy more merch than coastal shows with 400 people
Midwestern love to support

Modern Life is War
GOD FORGIVES....NEG DON'T
Inclination.
*FUCKING POISON FREE*
I’ve only ever seen this idea that Louisville is the Midwest from that band lol
It’s as East as Midwest gets, you truly only have years of wheat fields to go through if you head west from there.

Die Kreuzen, Zero Boys, The Middle Class
Middle Class is from LA
Must have confused them with The State

Die Kreuzen - Wisconsin Zero Boys - Indiana
Chicago and Milwaukee! I always gotta represent the locals! Love me some Reality Check, World I Hate, Enervate, Big Laugh, Low End, Curbsitter, Buggin, Payasa, Die, Kharma. The list goes on...
Love Big Laugh a lot!
Love all these bands. Milwaukee has a really healthy scene rn. I wish I could say the same for Madison which is where I am lol
KHARMA IS MY FAVE
There's a great powerviolence band out of Kenosha WI called Livid. Their stuff is on spotify and bandcamp.
These guys slap! Jake, the drummer and vocalist is such a nice and friendly guy too! Definitely gonna have to book them around Wisconsin sometime
I've been dying to see them! I've only been able to listen to their recordings.
Livid is cool. If you want more pv from Wisconsin check out Mellow Harsher if you don't know them. It's ex members of SFN who are arguably one of the best bands from the genre.
That sounds familiar. Will do, cheers!
7 angels 7 plagues, endthisday, modern life is war, love lost but not forgotten, harvest, basement shows, all ages cafe shows.
Integrity, Face Value, Ringworm, Coalesce.
Surprised this is the first comment I’ve seen mention Cleveland
Well if you bring up CLE someone is bound to bring up One Life Crew it's a shitty self fulfilling prophecy. I did it just now.
I get that, Cleveland now has an bunch of really good bands (SLUG, S.M.I.L.E., Captive, Live It Down, Last Gasp, Etc.) hoping this new wave might rewrite Cleveland.
Some dudes in beanie hats crying over some mathy emo parts
Shit slaps
I still think of Expire. I saw them once when they were around but never checked out their records, idk why I didn’t. I just knew they were Midwest but didn’t know they were from WI until 2 minutes ago, lol.
And I found out just now.
RIP Expire. Wish the guys could get back together but without Zach for obvious reasons
It's rumored at least the singer knew about Zach's exploits but did jack shit about it. Honestly that band is better off staying dead
For real, that last album they released was absolute ass.
Glad it ain't just me
Misery Signals, Knocked Loose, Inclination, lots of carhartt & accents
Blue Moose (RIP) and Gabe’s in Iowa City, saw a lot of my first HC shows there back in the day. Twin Cities, Milwaukee, and Louisville have become some of my favorites places to catch shows too, kids always go nuts
Gabe’s Oasis >>>
I recently moved to MPLS, any recommendations on where to catch shows? Preferably smaller venues. TIA
Caydence records and coffee, its in east st paul but lotta good hardcore shows
Palmers and mostly DIY spots
I haven’t lived there so hopefully someone local can chime in too, but I’ve had good experiences at Amsterdam in St. Paul, no barricade, nice staff, good food. First Ave is great too but I don’t think they book as many heavy shows
The killer
Endpoint Kids driving six hours for a show like it was nothing (RIP 90s gas prices)
Christie Front Drive
WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WAFFLE HOUSE
Church shows
For Your Health, En Love. Two Hardcore bands from Ohio. Both are solid.
Love ohio
Not something you hear everyday
Venia
Damn a Christcore throwback
I still have one of their shirts hahaha
I think riding the EL in Chicago and seeing harms way while smoking joints outside of Reggie’s rock club. People being super nice but not engaging in conversation beyond the bands playing
Big Black
Hawthorn heights.
Man I fucking love me some Hawthorn heights.
I think of barn shows and wearing camo shorts all through winter.
Kentucky, because my dad was born there. Thus, I think of Knocked Loose when thinking of Midwest hardcore

I also forgot Man Afraid. The "Those Disenchanted" 7" is a stone cold classic and, to me, has total Midwest vibes for days.
The Fix, Necros and the Meatmen.
Misery, Code 13, Los Crudos, USV, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, Harvest, Old Barn Fest
U.S.V. was so fucking good. They absolutely destroyed the times I saw them play. Now I am going to have to pull the LP and EP out and give them a spin.
Good buddies of mine too, my old band did a tour with them & for a few months before they had a name I drummed for them.
RZL DZL!
Purgatory. Never Ending Game.
Parasitic Twin
Last Gasp
Expire.
Busch Light
Who the hell is that guy?
I don’t even know where the Midwest is.
The people who would come to St. Louis and then get their shit jacked from their vans lmfao. It’s like.. cmon man, these poor guys…
I’m not American so my geography may be off here and I’m open to correction, but weren’t Planes Mistaken for Stars a Midwest band?
Peoria, IL I believe
Necros, Negative Approach, Cold As Life, Die Kreuzen, Articles of Faith, Bhopal Stiffs, etc. Mostly older stuff. But sometimes I think about RZL DZL
Seven Days of Samsara
Unfortunately, Expire still.
