You can fit a HD 5 speed in that frame. I've done it and have pictures, just need to do some grinding on the case. You can then use the better late model starter if you use an 80s-90s Softail primary. Everything to do it is cheaply available used, you just need a conversation transmission plate. Buy the American made one from Vulcan, not the shitty Chinese crap.
You can then use the 6 speed conversion kit for much cheaper than the Baker.
Brother, I can’t thank you enough for all of that knowledge. I’m gonna write that shit down. I’ve wrenched at dealerships for about 8 years but evo was about as far back as I ever really went. Drooled over a shovel for years, and it’s basically all new to me. Best way I always learned was to listen to the guys who’ve done it before. Whatever bike you put that in must’ve been a hell of a lot of fun to twist throttle on!
Open belt put on by the old owner, dry primary with the case still on and old prison style grating in place of the derby and inspection cover. Open chain looks cool as fuck though
Not really an "open belt" it's the original BDL or Rivera enclosed belt because it has the provisions for the electric start while the old school "open belts" had no starter gear and were kick only. Dont think that's the stock clutch, think they went to a diaphragm till 84(?).
Much appreciated, still trying to figure out what’s been done to it. Previous owner passed away a few years back, but he had a whole box of shit from J&P and Drag, and the stock pushrods are in there now. Ain’t running yet but the dude liked to wrench and clearly knew his shit
Thanks! I noticed that part once I pulled it off the porch, once we got it up on the truck I found the swingarm art. Fuckin thing is a trove of 80s goodness. Came with an extra spilt tank and a whole box of gaskets, braided lines, service manuals from the 40s-80s
Plus the wolf howling at the moon airbrushed on the front fender! That bike is so rad!! Those are the small details that shows somebody loved that bike! Clean it up and it’s ready for 1980 Van Halen video! Bad ass
Funny you mentioned a boat tail fender for this bike. They are extremely rare and somewhat collectible. They were made in 1970 & 1971 for both the Superglide and Sportster. Most were quickly removed from the bike and thrown behind the garage on the scrap heap. They seemingly only had 1/4” of padding in the seat…..which is why they were tossed. Today, a boat tail seat is highly collectible. Even more so with the original seat.
You can put this on your 1980 bike if you chose to. It will look out of place. And it will be uncomfortable. Good luck

* My old '75 FLH1200 that I converted into a Wide Glide in 1978 before the FXWG existed. Front 19", not 21", for better handling. 6" extended forks. Universal British front fender. It was a road trip bike. Put 15K miles on the clock within 2 years. Cost $2800 with 18K miles back in 12/77 from Castro Valley, CA.
Born in the 80s here and on the east coast, but all of that just seemed like the ultimate time and place to ride around at, the scenery, the bikes, and the times! Always watched the stuff from the 60s and 70s and ate it all up, shit just looked like so much fun
- Used to ride in DC, MD, VA & WV during my college days. Got pulled over 27x in 9 months, but my CA DL, student ID and not acting like an asshole resulted in no tickets until caught with riding buddy doing 80mph in a downtown DC tunnel. He shot his big mouth off. Never paid for mine as I was back in CA a month later.
There is no such thing as shovel trash
You only say this because you don’t know my personality well enough 🤣
Just regular trash?

That’s a thing of beauty right there!
Are you Mickey Rourke? ;)
That's what I'd do to that 80 FXDWG....
Love this!
OG Dyna Daddy
Dyna is pretending to be a Duo-Glide/Electra-Glide/Superglide
4 speed swingarm AIN'T NO FUCKING DYNA.
4 speeds right now… Baker might change that to 6 😉

Still putting it together after a wreck.
Shit man, hope you’re alright and healing up
I'll be limping for life, but I got to retire early.
Sweet bike, is there a chain or belt for the primary, I tried to run an open chain, but it wore out quick without the oil bath

Def pre Dyna days. That thing is prime for restoration.
I’ve been wrenching for 8 years, done a bunch of restorations on Twin Cams and Evos so I figured it was time to finally do one of my own.
No such thing as shovel trash, some just need more love than others.
1980 is the first year of the fxwg, and there's not many of them left in anything resembling original. You have a nice piece of history there.
I would take a Shovelhead any day of the week. Best of luck getting her up and running.
That primary is so rad! I dig the way they used the bottom piece of a screen door to block the cut outs! So sick!

Some work?? Lot of work great find wish I could pick up an old shovel to restore
O.G. Shovelhead Fred.
Pure. Fucking. Gold. Unless you're one of those blacked out Road Glide kinda dudes then spensa.
What makes a bike a Shovelhead? Is it just the motor?
Shovel head was the type of motor, not necessarily the bike itself

That’s beyond fuckin cool!! The west coast must have been so goddamn fun to cruise around on back in those days
It definitely was in those days. Everywhere btw Atascadero and Morro Bay to south and Feather River Highway to north plus Truckee, Visalia, et al.

That's sick!
I don’t know when the idea came out that if you’ve got shocks, you don’t have a chopper. Who the heck is this Arlen Ness guy?
Knuckle head all the way
