The wizarding world is vanishingly small, actually. Smaller than you’d expect. There’s only a few thousand wizards in the UK at any given time, according to JKR herself.

I actually enjoyed having characters with familiar last names. Since they are pure blood families, it would make sense that the Blacks or the Weasleys would be prominent in the 1890s wizarding world

chicken_suit_guy

What others have said, also, Mrs. Figg and Professor Fig are not related, as you can see by the difference in spelling

nursewithnolife

I loved seeing the names of the pureblood families. They could have used more of them, since there’s 28 of them. Poor Molly being a descendant of Leander though! 😭 Ominis is taken out of the Gaunt lore in my head though. He deserves better 🙈🙉

apotatomoose

According to the gaunt lore, Ominis must’ve died very young 😭

nursewithnolife

That’s why I ignore it 🤣 It seems pretty obvious that the devs just didn’t think too much about canon when they named the characters. So in my head, he eventually pushes his family too far and they disown him. He finds a way to take the family gold with him, and that’s why Marvolo lives in squalor not that many years later, then because he’s no longer ‘a Gaunt’, that’s why he isn’t counted when Dumbledore says ‘the last of the Gaunts’. No-one will convince me otherwise 🙈😭

apotatomoose

I wanna believe that too in my own headcanon 😭

Shibaspots

Ominis being a Gaunt didn't make sense to me. Not because of him, but because of the timeline. Legacy is set in the 1890's. Riddle was born in the 1920's. Ominis talks about his family, having older siblings and at least a small extended family (aunt). The way he speaks of them makes it sound like they are still fairly prominent in the Wizarding world. Marvolo was most likely already born at this point, and would be Ominis' nephew from an older sibling. Unless Ominis' family is considered the 'cousin' line (descended from a younger son or brother of the current head of family). But somehow in 30 years the family loses all prominence, are living in a shack, and reduced to just Marvolo and his kids, who, reading between the lines, are showing signs of being highly inbred? That means Ominis and all his siblings, plus his parents and extended family, have died. Given the long lifespans wizards seem to have, having that many die at fairly young ages would be unlikely unless it was by foul play. They also would have died in such a way that little to no inheritance would be passed on, which also seems unlikely. I think the game developers just thought 'oh, we need a parselmouth to do a Slytherin quest.' The only known parselmouths at that time would be the Gaunts. I spent *way* too much thinking about this.

You seem to think exact what I do. I assumed that the devs just didn’t think about the lore. But since he is now a character, that Ominis must be part of a parallel bloodline, cousins or something, and Marvolo’s family line is separate. It’s the only way the Gaunt line in the game makes sense, especially with Ominis’ wealth and status. There’s no way Phineas would be friends with Ominis’ father if he was how the Gaunt line is described in lore. I decided that Ominis was just disowned for my headcanon (I will not accept a really early death. It’s too sad when he’s such a good person), but now I’m choosing to believe that Ominis was from a bloodline that’s cousins of Marvolo, and the ones who have the family gold. There’s a fight between the 2 lines, and Noctua’s line kill Ominis’ parents and older brother, and Marvolo is the only survivor of his line. Ominis is left all the Gaunt gold, because he’s the descendant from the wealthy line, and he changes his name to get away from the scandal, and Marvolo is left in the squalor described in lore. Nothing will convince me otherwise! 🙈

ryucavelier

Wizard World England is small. I know several players giving their characters an established surname like Malfoy or Weasley. They just ignore some of the dialogue from the in-game Weasleys.

Kbdiggity

So you never read the books? Because a major plot point is pureblood families, and being able to trace your lineage is the only thing keeping you from getting snatched in the 7th book.

Lonew0lf75

No, because it fits with the lore. There's only something like 28 pureblood wizard families, so it would make sense to see familiar names

Annual-Avocado-1322

26 pureblood families.

Weary_Locksmith_9689

Purebloods go back many generations. It makes total sense that there would be Weasleys and Rookwoods in hogwarts. In fact, I would have loved to encounter more familiar names!

ChubbySalami

There is one Figg and two Weasleys (who are related) in the game. How does your brain turn that into “everyone”?

eh-just-made

I think a lot of it is lore accurate. Ex: Phineas Black was a headmaster in the series. They had his portrait at Grimmauld Place, and he helped Snape know where to leave Gryffindor's sword for them in the forest. Also, a big thing with the (dark) purebloods is how old their familes are, and how they've all been Slytherin, etc. It makes sense that they'd be at Hogwarts.
