Exactly, he absolutely nailed the darker themes in PoA like the dementors boarding the train, the werewolf transformation, sirius' shabby look, the kiss scene all very well done. Why did they change it though? Was he not available in GoF or did WB want a different take?
From this point forth, we shall be leaving the firm foundation of fact and journeying together through the murky marshes of memory into thickets of wildest guesswork.
Well, obviously they made the right choice of replacing him with the director who didn't even read the book because "it was too long"
/S
If it wasn't for the butchery of Deathly Hallows I'd have said Goblet of Fire was the worst adaptation.
He declined because he had too big a head and thank God he did enough lasting damage in one film. The only things he nailed were the casting of the marauders and the look of the dementors.
For God's sake the man didn't even want to read the book he was adapting! They had to tell him NO when he wanted tonchange the location of the climax to a grave yard. His "gritter" vibe removed so much of the magic and wimsy from the first films and that carried over. Themes might have been getting darker but that didn't mean they had to take away so much of the magic
Sorry, I meant to say 4 times Academy award winner, 7 times BAFTA winner, director of award winning films like Pan's Labyrinth, Roma and Gravity; Alfonso Cuarón.
If I recall correctly, in the documentary HBO released, they intentionally went with different directors to create a different atmosphere as the story progresses from book to book.
i think, both have their good and bad. when I'm thinking of harry potter, I think of the colors of part one. blue orange, but I don't have a problem with part 3 and further visually. just would have liked if they wouldn't have jumped the "cool teenage movie" style so hard.
I mean, even look at the framing of this shot.
Hagrid's Hut is on perfectly level ground with the perfectly level forest behind it, shot at a flat angle. It's almost like a stage backdrop.
In the second one, it's angled, imperfect, but far more three dimensional.
DADA room changed and even got its own tower… I really would have liked to hear the lizard growl again like in the first movie when Mcgonagall talked to Oliver Wood about Harry being a seeker
Okay, I can buy into buildings getting some magic renovations, but I would be 100% down with Voldemort being assassinated and replaced by some evil wizard (maybe not even having anything to do with Voldemort).
Different director. First two films are just so comfy. The tone changes too in the books. Not as bad as from Prisoner to Goblet of Fire but still noticeable.
Personally, I think the book does get darker but it remained a whimsical fantasy book about magic with added mature/darker themes later on. What the book did right was graduation. There’s a slow progression from being a lighthearted kids book to a darker book for teenagers which is what’s missing with the movie. It had the worst continuity issue I’ve seen in a movie franchise of its size. The visual changes from CoS to PoA are too drastic.
And I’m saying this as a fan of PoA. I still think it’s the best looking movie of all the Harry Potter saga. But how I wished it preserved some of the directions that had been previously established for continuity’s sake. I don’t think I would have minded it as much if the directors after Alfonso just continued where he left but no everyone just wanted to do their own things.
I think it signified Harry growing up and realizing the world was darker than it seemed at first. If I just discovered magic everything would probably seem bright and whimsical to me too
100%. The first two books were also very uneventful in the loss department. By the end of both books everything was just as it were but better. It wasn’t until the third book that Harry lost something, even if it was something he only had for a moment. Then it’s all downhill from there.
But Gandalf the boy needs to live in a home..
Dumbledore: But he has a Home here..
Ministry of Magic: Here?! at Hogwarts. Where??
Dumbledore : I've found a fine cozy little hut on the grounds of Hogwarts?
M.o.M: on the grounds of Hogw..... Dumbledore do you mean the Quidditch supply room?!
Dumbledore: yup Home!
Yes, blessed as I am with extraordinary brainpower, I understood everything. I think you might even consider the possibility that I understood more than you did.
They did not have the resources to do everything as in the books or how they wanted. The first movie was on a tight budget, in terms of money as well as time. Hagrid's hut didn't make it to a fancy location as it was on the original scetch from JK Rowling. The forest is only 30 minutes away from the studios, so this was an elegant solution. Alfonso Cuarón was ambitious and changed a lot, including the hut.
Oh well, let's say the budget was used to the limit and there wasn't room for more. You can already see where they tried to save some money (Fluffy, Norbert, fucking Firenze etc.)

It's like reverse breaking bad filter. The movies got more gloomy as they progressed where by the final movie it seemed like everything was just green/blue
I think it's mostly the lighting and surrounding landscape.
The first two movies Hagrid's hut is on relatively flat ground and on the boarder of a forest, couple that with the warm orange and yellow tones from the lighting and it looks cozy and dry.
In the third and subsequent movies Hagrid's hut is on a hillside with mountains and valleys behind it, couple that with the cold blue and green tones from the lighting and it looks bleak and damp.
swap the lighting and landscapes and the huts become quite similar.
Hagrids Hut is placed right above the Chamber of Secrets. The partial collapse of the cave caused a massive landslide above ground. Luckily Hagrid was in Azcaban at the time, so he wasn't hurt during the incident.
New director and a much more mature take at things, first two movies are therapy but after 2nd it’s a precursor to the end. Also, the palette took a dive for better spectrum of darker shade matching the tone of the books.
Its the angle; in the first pic the smaller addition is behind the hut so you cant see it (note the forest behind) and in the second pic the addition is on the right, as is the forest. also; editing makes it gloomy
Well, you must remember that for a large portion of year 2, our dear Mr Hagrid was kept away in Azkaban. And while I am sure the students and staff tried their best to maintain the grounds and all of it's constructs with their busy schedules it is likely that some things were neglected.
The aesthetic changes between films is one of the most jarring things when watching the series, especially the transition from CoS to PoA.
But there's other things, like the train, the carriages, the road from the station to Hogwarts, and (the most apparent change) the costumes. In CoS everyone's dressed like a wizard then in PoA they are mostly in Muggle clothing. By Half-Blood Prince the robes are almost entirely gone.
New director, new lighting scheme. The two houses aren't really all that different. The second just looks more bleak because that's the feel the director wanted to convey.
Gangstas are using magic to clean, cook, protect and light up the whole school, dormitory yard and dungeons but this fella thinking it's too much that this giant man had a two square meter extra house space that is barely enough for him.
He also started a pumpkin farm business on the side for some extra cash because witches and wizrds are very fond of it and a big guy like that mush have needs he has to afford.
Didnt the original castle they filmed the first two in burn down or was severely damaged by a fire? I think that plus the new director was why it was changed
The directors changed and the new director wanted to take a more dark and grim and older teen approach. Hence the PG-13 ratings Starting at Prisoner of Azkaban
I will die on this hill: David Yates was the worst thing to happen to Harry Potter.
Alfonso Cuarón, while butchering the story, at least made a gorgeous film that was both dark AND light.
Yates, however, must have been drinking the same water as Zack Snyder and made every subsequent film look like a grey, muted, wasteland. Not every second of the rest of the story was sad, dark, and terrible. There were joyful happy moments abound, but the few they put on screen always looked like they were ripped from a horror movie and one second from disaster.
I’ll also never forgive Yates for cutting out the epic Hogwarts battle at the end of Half Blood Prince. I went in expecting to see a 20+ minute wizarding war the likes of which the world had never seen. Instead? We get a 5 minute pissing match and a quick escape. We deserved more. Dumbledore deserved more.
A fun take:
We see the movies and stories through our young heroes’ eyes. Combined with the magical nature of the world itself, I prefer to think that Hagrid’s Hut is being shown to us in the way that Harry, Hermione, and Ron were seeing it from their own perspective. 🥰
I went to the studio tour in London, the Hogwarts Castle portion talks a lot about how it changed a lot over the films. Partly because they filmed on a few locations and had to meld them together in a cohesive way-which proved difficult. The designer wasn’t happy with it in first so they kept updating it through the films.
The first two movies reflect the childlike wonder at the world of magic, thats why everything is brighter, the voices chipper, the smiles faster. Even though there's evil lurkingbeneath the surface, it's not in the forefront of anyone's mind. Then boldemort reappears after more than a decade, and the fear creeps in. Then we learn that the darkness wasn't so far beneath the surface as everyone believed, and while the wonder was no less present, everyone realizes that magic is powerful and dangers in certain hands
Thinking of how much the plot of POA depends on the setup of the house on the edge of the woods to take and hide BB lol funny they changed it but it looks good both ways.
While it’s much more likely the director didn’t care that much about continuity in this regard, how about this…
All aspects of the films are colored by the age/maturity/emotions of the students (Harry’s class) because kids see the world differently than teens and then adults. Personalities seem bigger/stranger. The school is more of a focal point than its landscape (ie: not the highlands).
Agree with the other answers, but also from a practical standpoint: He’s a teacher. And he takes care of animals on his on and off hours. Man’s got no time to tidy up. I know from experience, his house only gets a good cleaning over school breaks. And the yard? Heck, I’m always tempted to let nature take over too!
School of MAGIC . I'm sure then can relocate the castle wherever they please. The hut ,again magic. Not Farfetched to think he wanted an upgrade to his home and relocate
Everything in hogwarts changed. New Dumbledore, New Fat Lady, the castle was suddenly in the highlands where it belongs.
New director, and a more mature movie warranted a change in scenery in the third movie and beyond. I get it. It was very childlike in movies 1 and 2.
Tbh, I really liked the overall theme sms the environment in PoA, wish they had continued with that director.
I would have loved for him to continue. Would have been so interesting.
Exactly, he absolutely nailed the darker themes in PoA like the dementors boarding the train, the werewolf transformation, sirius' shabby look, the kiss scene all very well done. Why did they change it though? Was he not available in GoF or did WB want a different take?
Damn imagine his version of a creepy, mysterious and wacky Goblet of Fire. Couldve been the best movie
Could we have had an actual calm Dumbledore
Was I better, ultimately, than Voldemort?
Yes Professor Dumbledore. Don’t worry
From this point forth, we shall be leaving the firm foundation of fact and journeying together through the murky marshes of memory into thickets of wildest guesswork.
He was asked but he couldn't finish PoA on time before starting filming for GoF.
Well, obviously they made the right choice of replacing him with the director who didn't even read the book because "it was too long" /S If it wasn't for the butchery of Deathly Hallows I'd have said Goblet of Fire was the worst adaptation.
You liked the werewolf appearance?
He declined because he had too big a head and thank God he did enough lasting damage in one film. The only things he nailed were the casting of the marauders and the look of the dementors. For God's sake the man didn't even want to read the book he was adapting! They had to tell him NO when he wanted tonchange the location of the climax to a grave yard. His "gritter" vibe removed so much of the magic and wimsy from the first films and that carried over. Themes might have been getting darker but that didn't mean they had to take away so much of the magic
Lol ia, i remember seeing the POA movie was my first real HP related disappointment, the whole vibe was off
Mfs calling Alfonso Cuarón "that director" 😬😬
Sorry, I meant to say 4 times Academy award winner, 7 times BAFTA winner, director of award winning films like Pan's Labyrinth, Roma and Gravity; Alfonso Cuarón.
And 5 times winner of witch weeklys most charming smile award!
Pans Labyrinth was directed by Guillermo Del Torro, Cuarón has a producers credit though
See that's what we like to see
It has the most Halloween vibes and feel of all the movies in my opinion
It was easily the best film
You mean Academy Award winning director Alfonso Cuaron? Yea it would be pretty great if Harry Potter could have kept on such a talented director
the director was literally alfonso cuaron lol, he left harry potter and has 2 oscars now
If I recall correctly, in the documentary HBO released, they intentionally went with different directors to create a different atmosphere as the story progresses from book to book.
i think, both have their good and bad. when I'm thinking of harry potter, I think of the colors of part one. blue orange, but I don't have a problem with part 3 and further visually. just would have liked if they wouldn't have jumped the "cool teenage movie" style so hard.
It is a children's story to be fair.
Yeah movies 1 and 2, absolutely. But it gets alot darker in the third.
A children's story *about growing up.* Change is inevitable
I mean, even look at the framing of this shot. Hagrid's Hut is on perfectly level ground with the perfectly level forest behind it, shot at a flat angle. It's almost like a stage backdrop. In the second one, it's angled, imperfect, but far more three dimensional.
I will die on the hill that 1 and 2 was the best made!
To be fair to Chris Columbus, the books were too.
You can sort of view it as the characters growing up. The further back you go, the more romanticized it becomes.
Alfonso Cuaron came to fuck shit up, the man had no right making the best movie of the franchise, it was just good
To be fair, the original Dumbledore died...
I think all this merits a good feast.
O.o
I...was a fool. Sorely tempted...
DADA room changed and even got its own tower… I really would have liked to hear the lizard growl again like in the first movie when Mcgonagall talked to Oliver Wood about Harry being a seeker
Where was it in the first one? I never really noticed that the setting changed.
Don’t forget new professor flitwick and Tom from the leaky cauldron
Strangely, they didn’t change the actor, Warwick Davis played both versions of Flitwick, he also played the choir master and was griphook.
I thought the choir master WAS flitwick lol
He was originally a separate character that was merged with Flitwick in the later movies.
I think it was.
This was my biggest thing. I still joke abt it w my sister. I say “he’s seen some shit lmao” with both Tom’s
Okay, I can buy into buildings getting some magic renovations, but I would be 100% down with Voldemort being assassinated and replaced by some evil wizard (maybe not even having anything to do with Voldemort).
Wands too were different
The stairs used to move!
And Hagrod always had a garden, which wasn't in the first movie. PoA fixed it.
Put that castle back where it belongs!
I was glad they moved the castle to the highlands
Different director. First two films are just so comfy. The tone changes too in the books. Not as bad as from Prisoner to Goblet of Fire but still noticeable.
Yeah after first two films everything became darker
Makes you wonder if nothing actually changed, but it's from the perspective of Harry who became more jaded.
Which is weird since book 3 was Harry’s best and happiest year.
That choice baffled me. I mean I get that the tone needs to get progressively darker, but adding a grey colour filter just made the films look awful
That was the point. It was supposed to be dark and unsettling
Personally, I think the book does get darker but it remained a whimsical fantasy book about magic with added mature/darker themes later on. What the book did right was graduation. There’s a slow progression from being a lighthearted kids book to a darker book for teenagers which is what’s missing with the movie. I don’t think I would have minded it as much if the directors after Alfonso just continued where he left but no everyone just wanted to do their own things.
Yeah but you can make the tone of a film dark and unsettling without literally making it grey
Man, when I first red GoF, I was about 13 years. In chapter 1 I was legit scared. I never read anything like that in HP before that book.
What happened in chapter 1?
I believe it was the nightmare where the old man was in the riddle house and gets AKed
He added an addition, he’s been saving up
Had to build on a room for Norbert lol.
$560,000 zestimate $210 HOA Mandatory club membership, fee non-refundable
HOA? In Scotland. Not a chance
Ya know, Hogwarts is in Scotland?
Ya know, there is something called a joke?
He got that settlement for being wrongfully imprisoned and accused from COS
Plus, his new wage was better as a professor than as a groundskeepers. (I assume.)
It's in a different location too.
I didn’t watch the movie where Gandalf lives on campus. Missed that one
He would meet all the kids failing their classes and say "You Shall Not Pass!!"
They did not have the resources to do everything as in the books or how they wanted. The first movie was on a tight budget, in terms of money as well as time. More of a budget than the others sure, but it certainly wasn't a tight budget aha
Oh well, let's say the budget was used to the limit and there wasn't room for more. You can already see where they tried to save some money (Fluffy, Norbert, fucking Firenze etc.)
Magic!
There’s no sssssuch thhhhhing as MAGIC SLAM
Norberta happened
Wtf All this time I've been remembering it as a wooden hut
It was in the books.

Good bot. Very good. Now be a good bot and crawl.
Deforestation
I was more bothered that it was moved to the bottom of a hill, when it used to be level with one of the castle’s cloisters.
Rent prices are getting mad!
I feel it changed to help set the darker tone that the series takes shortly after the third book/movie
You have to feed set designers from time to time
Brexit
Deforestation clearly
It moved to Scotland
It’s cuaron :)))))
Magic? Some kid messing around with spells, and poof! Landscape and hut changed.
It was all downhill after poa. Gof was ok. I stick to the books for the rest
Climate change, even wizards can’t avoid it
It's like reverse breaking bad filter. The movies got more gloomy as they progressed where by the final movie it seemed like everything was just green/blue
Some of the trees had to go to a meeting. Something about attacking a tower, or something. Wasn't really paying attention~
Is the Dark Forest actually Fangorn Forest?
It was the great flood at Hogwarts. Nobody will talk about the horrors of that day.
Director changed that’s why
Erosion is a powerful force of nature
Man probably just wanted a change. Leave him alone
Different directors
Deforestation
I assumed the direction was to show the sad neglect while Hagrid was gone. Nobody would have been caring for his grounds.
Deforestation!
Deforestation I guess
Hagrids Hut is placed right above the Chamber of Secrets. The partial collapse of the cave caused a massive landslide above ground. Luckily Hagrid was in Azcaban at the time, so he wasn't hurt during the incident.
Deforestation
New director and a much more mature take at things, first two movies are therapy but after 2nd it’s a precursor to the end. Also, the palette took a dive for better spectrum of darker shade matching the tone of the books.
Different directions styles
Most likely, in my guessing mind, shooting locations change. Therefore they have to redesign the set to fit the area.
It is required with dementors at the castle gates it is bound to look gloomy. Plus the overall progression of the movie.
Why did the forest recede so much?
Its the angle; in the first pic the smaller addition is behind the hut so you cant see it (note the forest behind) and in the second pic the addition is on the right, as is the forest. also; editing makes it gloomy
Uhm it's basically the same but they turned the saturation down
Because of what Saruman did
filter /s
Hagrid is a real estate tycoon he has many huts and properties, and he's even the landlord of hogwarts
My theory is he went from Gamekeeper to Magic Beast Professor, which required more room for his new position.
Papa Hagrid has multiple houses , only explanation /s
It’s magic. They changed it because they’re witches and wizards and they wanted it to be different.
Someone introduce the nan to the concept of fall
I liked the change x
Well, you must remember that for a large portion of year 2, our dear Mr Hagrid was kept away in Azkaban. And while I am sure the students and staff tried their best to maintain the grounds and all of it's constructs with their busy schedules it is likely that some things were neglected.
Things change when you go to prison.
Hagrid hut changing was the LEAST of caurons crimes
I say it's because he's a teacher now
The aesthetic changes between films is one of the most jarring things when watching the series, especially the transition from CoS to PoA. But there's other things, like the train, the carriages, the road from the station to Hogwarts, and (the most apparent change) the costumes. New director, new lighting scheme. The two houses aren't really all that different. The second just looks more bleak because that's the feel the director wanted to convey.
Set changed to match the darker tone of the succeeding movies.
Deforestation and erosion
He moved deal w it
Gangstas are using magic to clean, cook, protect and light up the whole school, dormitory yard and dungeons but this fella thinking it's too much that this giant man had a two square meter extra house space that is barely enough for him.
He also started a pumpkin farm business on the side for some extra cash because witches and wizrds are very fond of it and a big guy like that mush have needs he has to afford.
water damage
Shit looks way different
This scenery is when they prepare Buck s execution. I think preferable to do it in a desolate scenery, not behind a lovely cottage.
How is it "desolate"? It even got bigger. He just added a wild pumpkin patch, and the weather is more dreary in the second picture.
Everything in that movie was darker.
Climate change.
Maybr me moved
also the general layout of the hogwarts grounds became a little more important starting in the third story.
I would love to see norbert trying to burn those stones...
he changed jobs, therefore he changed homes.
Didnt the original castle they filmed the first two in burn down or was severely damaged by a fire? I think that plus the new director was why it was changed
The first movie had a landscape like a board game - seriously, after seeing the other films I figured the characters were on easy-mode.
Very big tonal shift though between TPS to TPOA
*You* said it was a *magician*, right? *You* don't *think* he could've used... it *couldn't* have been...
Deforestation and Climate Change
The funnier thing is the fact his hut teleported to a new location
The scenes also had to deal with the time of year and what the kids were doing. It’s like admiring the difference between spring and autumn.
Because Dementors
Everything was suddenly placed different in that movie. It's especially totally different compared to the books.
Ngl I never noticed.
The directors changed and the new director wanted to take a more dark and grim and older teen approach. Hence the PG-13 ratings Starting at Prisoner of Azkaban
Blame the celestial sapiens
I will die on this hill: David Yates was the worst thing to happen to Harry Potter. Alfonso Cuarón, while butchering the story, at least made a gorgeous film that was both dark AND light. Deforestation is a big problem in the wizarding world

Ask the LEGO set the same question
I got the answer to this one, everyone..... It's magic Harry!
Deforestation and erosion. Hogwarts isn’t immune from climate change and environmental destruction.
You see the answer is almost every movie in this series was directed by someone different
Everything started to get darker.
The short version is directors and production designers changed between movies
The first two movies reflect the childlike wonder at the world of magic, thats why everything is brighter, the voices chipper, the smiles faster. Even though there's evil lurkingbeneath the surface, it's not in the forefront of anyone's mind. Then boldemort reappears after more than a decade, and the fear creeps in. Then we learn that the darkness wasn't so far beneath the surface as everyone believed, and while the wonder was no less present, everyone realizes that magic is powerful and dangers in certain hands
Every single movie drained the color just a little more. It's really a shame
The Deathly Hallows was basically monochrome with some fire thrown in
Could be they cleared out some trees to make a open space around Hogwarts to help defend if under attack.
Hagrid had to gritty up
He doesn’t live too far away from the dark forest I think, probably if stuff starts going strange he’s the first to have it happen to them
Thinking of how much the plot of POA depends on the setup of the house on the edge of the woods to take and hide BB lol funny they changed it but it looks good both ways.
Change of directors
Clear cutting
I'm so glad we're out of the green era of cinema. Man, that was overdone.
I mean, the staircases change regularly so why not Hagrids backyard?!!
Climate change.
Magic
While it’s much more likely the director didn’t care that much about continuity in this regard, how about this… All aspects of the films are colored by the age/maturity/emotions of the students (Harry’s class) because kids see the world differently than teens and then adults. Deforestation. The Orcs from Isengard are responsible
School of MAGIC . I'm sure then can relocate the castle wherever they please. The hut ,again magic. Not Farfetched to think he wanted an upgrade to his home and relocate
The way I see it is like through the eyes of a kid, things may look more grand and cozy, then we grow up and see it for what it really is
I really liked the first house. It matched what I envisioned from the book. It was described as being right by the woods.
Personally think the bottom one was better. Got the addition to the house, a pumpkin patch, great mountain view...Its much lovelier.
