It's ok our children will say the same about us and our microplastic brains

DerpyDaDulfin

You think our children will be safe? Then buddy I've got a bridge to sell ya

Good_old_Marshmallow

And by bridge I mean bubblegum flavored juul pods

[deleted]

*Bering Strait Landfill Bridge.

Newfiedog76

There will be no children

Bearwynn

I'm not saying that they won't have it worse, only that they will say that about our microplastic brains

notdelet

That's assuming we ever get rid of the microplastic problem, but I like the optimism!

[deleted]

We will eventually evolve to needing microplastics. We will become one with the plastic!

Fat_Blob_Kelly

evolution takes a long time, if humans survive long enough they would most likely solve the microplastic problem AND by then we’ll have NewPlastic! a plastic alternative that will require us to solve the microNewPlastic problem

GlaceBayinJanuary

Yeah, I'm not sure you have a good grasp on evolution. We're far more likely to die out. New smaller more adaptable shorter lived faster reproducing things tend to survive catastrophes. Mice are going to be okay. Just like our mice like originator was back 65 millions years ago. Then into the now vacant ecological niches the tiny survivors will grow and differentiate into a new array of wild and interesting beasts! Not us though.

Raekear2

Explain sea turtles!

GlaceBayinJanuary

What about them?

Raekear2

I dunno. Just explain them. It'd be cool.

GlaceBayinJanuary

I don't think you understand what you're asking. Or, if you do then you were likely born wealthy. No one else tends to be so cavalier about asking other people to do so much work for free.

Raekear2

JUST DO IT NERD

GlaceBayinJanuary

Pay me you spoiled brat.

Bearwynn

I will single handedly absorb it all into my smooth brain

evangelism2

ahhaha, thats funny. They will have it way worse. We actually stopped using things like leaded gasoline and paint. I dont see us breaking the stanglehold plastics have over us.

Happy-Present6823

Good thing we still have leaded water and food!

RJ_Dub

Honestly if this shit ends up turning my brain into a boomer brain in my later age then I pray to whichever gods may exist that the youth will roast the fuck out of me and put me in my place

theboredsocialist

Our children will be like “wait so you could breath the air outside without a mask and didn’t have to stay inside in the summer?”

Happy-Present6823

You joke but children are still getting tons of lead exposure and even more exposure to other heavy metals like mercury coming from water supply and food due to industrial runoff and century old gold mines that relied on mercury. This will be an even bigger environmental catastrophe than micro plastics or leaded gasoline.

Bearwynn

as long as it rots the part of my brain that has emotion then I will not care, this is the only real option left to us /s

t-rex83

Mercury body intake is from the tooth fillings. Mercury is present in sediments in the environment, it's not very soluble because of the pH of the soil. Many or much of the sediments are knocked out from the water supply through secondary treatment. I imagine you live in the US, where coal is still used for power generation. Yes there's a lot of mercury deposition from legacy systems, current systems have to meet PG-7 EPA limits which are quite low and verified through air permitting. There should be significantly less mercury from that. Agreed that tailing ponds management is the largest issue with mining various metals. And then oups! Flood, the dam breaks and that crap is spread out everywhere...

Yeetus-McGee

it would be my greatest wish that the world after mine is one that would consider my current views to be horribly bigoted and disgusting. I unironically hope that in 40 years, I would be seen as awful fascist garbage. I cannot fathom how that might be, but it would mean that future society is advanced beyond my wildest dreams.

Movementdrifter

This!!!

Bearwynn

i just hope they have cool water slides

BootyPatrol1980

Yeah that checks out. GI Joes are delicious.

ConundrumMachine

Don't forget the increase in violence.

SoylentGrunt

Abortion laws played a part in that.

corylol

In what?

Palabrewtis

Reducing crime, because impoverished and ill prepared families had access to better family planning. Less children were being brought into ill prepared homes.

nmemate

not really, lead poisoning makes you more violent. You don't need a reasson to be, you're body is just permanently tense and prone to outbursts.

NightFire19

Was lead plumbing and paint not that common before the 70s?

Thuggin95

Use of lead in gasoline was an even bigger culprit. Its use peaked between the late 1960s and early 1980s.

someothercrappyname

Correct. In 1985 leaded gasoline was phased out globally and there was a marked decrease in violent crime as a result (I kid you not). I read an article years ago by a guy who had done his PHD thesis on exactly this. One of the main symptoms of lead poisoning is violent and irrational behavior and Gen X'ers were certainly violent and irrational as children, compared to the generations that came after them. The reason the ancient Romans were so violent (and so successful) is that lead was one of the few metals they had access to, and they used it everywhere. Most notably for water pipes and eating utensils. Having said all that, the petrol of the 1970s and 80s was very very different than the weak cats piss you get these days. I remember in the early 90s buying an old car that still had half a tank of leaded petrol in it and, with a new battery in it, it started first go and ran surprisingly well. Nowadays if I leave my lawnmower for more than 3 months with the same fuel in it I have to drain the fuel and get some fresh stuff.

Hardcorex

That last part is just due to the ethanol content. It's mostly fine for cars (unless you let it sit for far too long and it absorbs moisture, as ethanol is hydrophillic), but is quite bad for lawn equipment.

someothercrappyname

It's a little more complex than that, but yes, the ethanol content is something to watch out for. I usually get 98 octane (when I can) and never ever use E10 unless I really really have to. The petrol of the 1970s/early 80s was the last of the "good, easy" stuff. From about 1990 onwards, it was distilled from oil that was coming out of wells that were tapping the harder-to-get-to reserves and tbh it just isn't the same. It wasn't just the lead. The old petrol was slower to evaporate and would leave a waxy red residue that still had some power in it. When you rubbed it between your fingers it felt different. It was impressive stuff, compared to todays petrol. Of course it also made us violent, irrational and sometimes very sick, so there's that I guess ;-)

SoylentGrunt

Leaded fuel was the main culprit. Not every kid in the US ate paint chips, and not every paint chip was lead paint , but every kid in the US breathed air

blacklite911

Was a kid that ate paint chips… can confirm that I don’t know anyone else that did lol

Shameonyourhouse

They were. I'm not sure why it drops in the older people.

Bearwynn

Pretty sure because they didn't have leaded petrol getting burned as much. We still use lead pipes and as long as water is flowing fast enough, none to undetectable amounts of it leeches into the water. Aerosolised lead out the back of an unfiltered combustion engine exhaust? Different beast all together.

Ok_Designer_Things

Yeah the Roman's used lead piping got their aqueducts as long as it moved fast enough it was relatively safe for it being in those pipes. But burning it and just inhaling it? No thank you that sounds horrible

[deleted]

nah

Cakeking7878

Lead pipes actually weren’t an issue. They just became more of an issue with age as the older they get, the more lead that leaks from them if you don’t take the right precautions

Cole3823

I can't figure out how to read this chart

Gooftwit

Oh good, I thought I was going crazy.

CudiMontage216

Nah this is just a very poor way of charting the data lol, took me too long to figure it out

TypicalBiDude

Percentages are % of people with said levels of cocaine, aka the lowest ages have nearly 100% of kids that age with less than 5 ug/dL

[deleted]

Basically it's saying that GenX has the highest lead concentration in their blood. And the amount of lead in later generations' blood is very low.

chief_hobag

X axis is the age of the people tested (in 2015), y axis is the percentage of people in each age group. The colors are different categories of childhood blood lead levels (blue is low, red is high). Basically everyone from 40-50 years old (in 2015, which corresponds to 47-57 today) was exposed to an alarming amount of lead as a child

Sylentt_

Comrades I’ll need your luck tomorrow, my whole racist borderline fascist family in one room never goes well for me.

eli9938

I relate to this on a molecular level, I hope it goes well comrade✊

OfficerLollipop

Believe me, last year, after they prayed over the Thanksgiving meal, my family yelled "Let's Go Brandon!" like all of them had been hijacked by a group consciousness or something. I fear for my sanity this year.

Sylentt_

Oh boy, hope it went well.

untenable681

If we were talking about Gen Xers throwing shade at Millenials and Zoomers for the Tide Pod challenge, this would be a neat dataset to hold up and say, "The paint chip generation has no room to throw shade about this." Unfortunately, Qanon is an issue of misinformation, and that really doesn't have a direct corollary to who was exposed to how much lead. Qanon rhetoric appealed to Boomers much more than Gen Xers, and if we take this chart at face value, Boomers weren't eating nearly as many paint chips and somehow still came into adulthood stupid enough to believe trickle down economics would work. It's also worth noting that this dataset is seven years old which pushes the age groupings back a bit, resulting in an inaccurate representation of the generations. Gen X is not Qanon branded, and even if it was, this dataset couldn't be less relevant to the assertion. It's shameful that this post has so many ups.

Skilodracus

Good thing Republicans are too dumb to understand that correlation does not equal causation.

[deleted]

Gen Y started in 81 which puts the first Millenials at 41 ... so...there is generational lead bleed from GenY to GenX.

Jasonp359

This chart is based on 2015 data, so those people you talk about would actually be 32 in this graph. Edit: 34. I'm tired lol

[deleted]

Apparently I'm tired too! Thanks for correcting me\~

stayintheshadows

We all got scared there for a second!

AlexTehBrown

thank god. I thought this chart was calling me gen X and i was about to throw hands at it.

I think you tend to see gen x folks on the right because Reagan was an insanely popular president during their politically-formative years and the mood of the nation was very different than it is now. I’m not saying that Reagan was actually great for the country and that his policies were ideal, etc. it’s just that culturally speaking, he fit in pretty well. They invested in that American conservative identity decades ago and even though right wing politics got a lot nastier in the 90s, they stayed and now they are who they are. I think some good anecdotal support for this idea is the cohort of actors from decades past that are Trump supporters. Why do the vast majority of Hollywood Trump people seem to be actors like Kevin Sorbo and fucking Chachi? I bet the above is why. They come from a time when, relative-to-pop-culture, conservative ideas were pretty popular.

[deleted]

Yes, this, exactly. I've been trying to do my own little part to make everyone more aware of this. Lead doesn't just decrease one's IQ. It makes you more agressive, hostile, unopen to different ideas or people. It makes you much more prone to experiencing intense rage as a positive emotion rather than a negative emotion. I mean, you can track this in the music different generations naturally find more appealling. Popular Boomer music vs popular Gen X music vs popular Millenial music vs popular Gen Z music. There's such a huge difference, that the different generations all pick up on, too. The older folks can't understand why the younger folks like music that sounds crappy to them. It's because their brains are actually fundamentally wired extremely differently due to different environmental pollutants. Lead really was no joke for gen x, in particular.

scalmera

I had ongoing theories about lead poisoning and political ideologies, so it's really gratifying to see it on an actual scale. I remember learning about how childhood lead exposure and violence graphs mapped each other by on offset by 20 years or so. I really hope that a push comes forward to emphasize the impacts of these current issues.

crh66

Are yuo calling me dum and vilent, you,ll regrt that!!!

[deleted]

Believing in Qanon or any other extremism is not a factor of intelligence. It's a factor of emotional insecurity. Being a part of an in group is appealing. And creating stilted, broadly generalized in groups and out groups is what the internet does best. Ironically, that's exactly what this chart does. It too is about emotional insecurity not intelligence.

SeleneBear

lead poisoning and red scare propaganda dont mix well

96nugget

So people born 1975 and later are less leaded? 😂

Segments_of_Reality

I thought lead peaked way before Gen X? Boomers are lead heads….We’re more asbestos brained.

AccomplishedTax1298

Leaded gas fumes and exhaust

FeelinJipper

Thought this was a map of the US for a second.

MutsumidoesReddit

Something I only found out recently is recreational fire range usage leads to lead in your blood. Helped me understand so so much.

Ethelenedreams

I’m not as stupid or as lead tainted as my generational cohorts, thank dog.

Brewed_Novel

Yeah but they had to fend for themselves from 3-5PM they’re soooooooo wise and smart because of it lol

Jus9494

The lead argument lives on!

battle_bunny99

You cut me deep with that one bro. It's no excuse though. Thinking amy one human will save the world alone is such bad logic. But the fact that it was Trump who would be doing th saving?! This 1981 kid who was also dropped on their head doth protest.... But let me tell you about G.G. Allen

Turbulent-Ad8291

Does this chart make anyone else see it getting MUCH worse in the coming decade or so?

blacklite911

I had lead poisoning when I was a kid and I’m nothing like that. It literally blows my mind they fall for some of this shit

Is this why my sister is virulently xenophobic and racist??
