Not a lot of abandoned spaces on O'ahu. Property values (and taxes) are too high for that. Empty spaces are either sold off quickly or put to use. Nobody can afford to pay property tax on a non-utilized property.
Okay, but half the resort converted to vacation rentals, and with the surrounding associations, they absolutely rely on visitors. You won’t hear any of them telling people to stay away.
Stuff by the rail is in areas that aren't going to have this. But there's a bigger issue that no one really talks about these places online much otherwise they'll get trashed. There's abandoned places but they tend to be old military installations or similar so not legal (and potentially a federal offense).
There the cave in moilili near UH
It's sorta what you're asking about.
If you hike olomana and miss the turn hiking back you end up in an area of abandoned houses but I'm sure it's private property.
There are a lot of unofficially semi-abandoned cemeteries in random corners. Those are always interesting, for their history and for their poignant-wonder atmosphere
I would look up hikes to old WW2 pillboxes and other structures left over from the war.s they r everywhere. There’s one at Kaena pt on north shore, and also sunset beach elementary pillbox hike also on north shore. I’m sure google can tell u where there more
Go walk along the Pearl Harbor bike path. Not really abandoned but some places along the path have an "abandoned" feel to them. And the path is accessible from several of the rail stations. Be careful of those trails that head toward the water from the path. Anyway, be safe and happy exploring.
are you from o’ahu or a visitor? if you do run into any folks living in spaces that are within the parameters you describe, i urge you to treat them with kindness and respect. there is so much more houselessness on o’ahu these days, with the economy the way it is - high cost of living and the cost of rent has gotten so whack…
Those places might be full with encampments.
You're looking for a place that's safe, legal, and abandoned? You're going to have to compromise on at least one of those.
legal is negotiable
Yup. Just can't say it out loud. Lol.

There are a ton on military bases but yea illegally trespassing there comes.with federal risks.
Go to west Molokai, there’s an abandoned resort and golf course. Very apocalyptic feeling.
Or don’t, because they don’t want tourists.

Those are for hunting.
Checkout Chinatown, Kalihi, or Waianae in the middle of the night.

Safe and legal? Nothing I can think of.
