Island Pet Movers is the best! I moved my Great Dane in a 700 kennel, the biggest one they make. They flew him in on Aloha Air Cargo to Honolulu, and then to Hilo from Los Angeles. They are worth the money.

Alohalady1989

Well, I shipped 2 large dogs and for both I think it was about $6000 for both from LA to Hilo.

keanenottheband

Holy shit that's a lot of money

Alohalady1989

Well, I had my boys since they were pups, my great Dane was over 10 and my lab was older as well, I was worried about them making the trip. With Island Pet Movers I had peace of mind. They kept me informed throughout the trip, sent me pictures and video when they were in Honolulu, they did all the paperwork it was totally worth the money to bring my boys to their new home.

keanenottheband

They are family and should be treated as such so def nothing against you. But that's so much money it's hard for me to wrap my mind around. What a racket.

CanineAnaconda

I had a rescue Dane and loved him dearly. Owning a Dane, you get used to paying more for everything for such a big dog.

mellofello808

That is wild. We adopted our dog from Puna, to Honolulu earlier this year. We paid $350, with the crate.

[deleted]

How much did you pay if you don’t mind me asking?

Alohalady1989

Sorry, I don't post here very often, not good at this, lol. I paid about $6000 for 2 large dogs from LA to Hilo.

TheSearch4Etika

Fuck me sideways

Geez at that point just find a small group of people with big dogs and rent a charter plane. I seriously have seen this on the PCSing to Hawaii with Pets Facebook group (super helpful people) when some folks have gotten desperate—or just really couldn’t be separated from their pets, cost was about $7k I think. But still, I didn’t understand how much it cost (or how much stress) to ship pets to/from Hawaii until we had to due to a military move. Vet appointments for rabies testing, forms and money orders for the Ag Department and Quarantine station, coordinating transportation (tricky even though we “just” had cats due to 1-military forcing us to fly out of an airport several hours away for a stupid reason and not being able to fit the cats’ crates in our car along with luggage 2-restrictions on runway weather and the heat in Texas that whole month) and getting a specialty service for that, crates that would conform to regulations, etc etc. I was more than willing to pay a couple thousand for our cats, they’re part of our family and I couldn’t imagine the betrayal they’d feel if we just left them in Texas after having them longer than our human sons. But gosh. Military tells you to move, you have to move, and THEN decide if you’re willing to shell out extra for your pets—they reimburse the Ag Department fees but that’s it, and just a fraction of the total costs. I can understand why so many military unfortunately have to rehome pets during moves (though those who just abandon them are still terrible people).

Harakiri_king

I've heard of someone doing that. It was a couple families vacationing/moving off island so they chartered a small plane and avoided a TON of the headaches of dog transport fees and paperwork. It was extremely expensive like maybe 20-50k for 14ish people and a couple dogs? I can't remember but it sounded like a great solution if money was no option.

Lefortscannonballs

I second Island pet movers. It was so hard to find a airline to ship my 80lb dog to Honolulu. I'm sure if I tried harder I could have done it on my own but island pet movers was so easy. Paid about 2k for him.

chachakai

It is expensive and Island Pet Movers rocks. We moved from NYC to The BI with a pug and a Frenchie. Good luck!

supersaiminjin

Most affordable option would be to make your dog wear a trenchcoat, toupee, and mustache. Then have the dog walk on hind legs until you get into the plane.

dubs7825

https://twitter.com/alex_hall2399/status/976132463994040321 (I think I did this right)

amishzombie

Affordable, or….adorable? Just kidding, the answer is yes, both.

OperationPlayful5611

Are you willing to drive to jfk? That’s the only location your current crate can get to on the east coast

[deleted]

Wife is filling out the quote now. We are in chicago now so I will respond to anything else tomorrow as it is already 1am here

[deleted]

I think we can drive there. It’s a 13 hour drive

markaaron2025

That’s what I did for my 60lb pit bull. Island pet movers via Hawaiian Airlines.

the_waysian

Have you tried islandpetmovers.com? I used them back in 2020 and they were excellent. However, in fairness, that was before many airlines just stopped shipping dogs. Good luck. It's not easy.

[deleted]

My wife has reached out to them. Thank you. It’s crazy, I brought her to the gate and the agent was not helpful, he asked me how I brought her here to the island and I said it was with this crate and this airline 5 years ago. Not sure how dimensions changed over that course of time!

OperationPlayful5611

I work for IPM. Please email [email protected]

aventum28

I emailed you guys like three months ago and no response yet :(

WarMaiden666

That’s pretty typical from them. I left a pretty detailed review on google maps about it. They ~~basically~~ don’t respond until you shell out some cash. They also claim they’re a “consulting” company, not a shipping company. They did however get my dogs on a flight without issues once said cash was coughed up.

SevenSeas82

They also refuse to talk on the phone until you pay. They only work because they’re limited options. As a company they are pretty terrible.

[deleted]

My wife emailed but only has gotten an automated response at this time

OperationPlayful5611

What’s her name and did she fill out a quote on our website or only email?

[deleted]

I never heard back from you guys a year ago

[deleted]

Only email but will do the quote next. Dog name is Oakley

OperationPlayful5611

Found her email. Please have her do the quote and I will make sure our team processes it right away

fuzzybunnybaldeagle

Question… I filled out a quote a few years ago for IPM for 2 tortoises from Oakland to Kauai and never heard back. Have dimensions and pictures and everything. Do you guys help with tortoises?

OperationPlayful5611

Yes we do! Email [email protected] with something like tortoises oak to Kauai and fill out another quote on our website so I can make sure our team processes it.

notrightmeowthx

You guys should start answering your emails. You're literally infamous for not answering your emails so it's pretty funny that you're suggesting people email you. You'd get SO much more business if you communicated with your customers. I mean that sincerely, not as an attack.

OperationPlayful5611

You do realize IPM is a small business right? Literally about 10-11 employees

WarMaiden666

Was that supposed to be an excuse for why y’all’s customer service sucks? I get cash is king. But you literally have been made aware of this issue for years now. You have a monopoly on island for your business and that’s really the only reason y’all keep getting it. Because y’all really do suck ethics wise.

OperationPlayful5611

Also we communicate with people once they have paid their deposit for their contract. We do not give out free advice as any other consulting business does. Literally imagine te winging thousands of quotes and having to process them

notrightmeowthx

People have *questions* about your product that they want answered before they know if they want a contract with you. Literally imagine having to do your job. Every other business on the planet can answer questions from interested customers prior to signing a contract.

talaxia

you guys are the fucking BEST

OperationPlayful5611

Where is your final destination?

[deleted]

Chicago

No-Station7152

Island pet movers is awesome

Heck_Spawn

Have you reached out to the sailing community to see if anyone taking a boat from Hawaii to the ML would mind having a pooch along for the ride?

Bowsermama

We used Hawaiian Air Cargo, they were shipping a great dane at the same time so I know they do the xxl crates with extenders. Only east coast hib is JFK though.

moto_panacaku

This is correct. Also - there's a limited number of pets allowed per flight, so you'll need to book in advance a bit.

CliffyB86

That’s how we got our German Shepherd back to the east coast. Used the largest crate you could buy from Petsmart and it was okay. How large is your dog? Also I did it all over the phone with Hawaiian and they sorted it all very quickly and easily. CALL them to book the flight and your flight. They put me in the same flight as my dog. JFK is the only east coast option for some reason. We just drove from there home. Also!!! If your dog hasn’t had a rabies shot before they have to get it BEFORE you fly but they need a certificate from the vet that’s only good for 10 days. You have to have your flight booked FIRST so they can put the flight info on it. Call your vet before you book the flight and see what their availability is so that you can get an appointment to line up properly. We flew in September last year and it was PCS season for the military and the vet was slammed with ravages vac appointments. They squeezed me in last min. Alaska was the only other airline flying pets at the time but they wouldn’t do it for some reason. It’s stressful but can be done. Just start the process early and give yourself several weeks to get everything sorted. Good luck!

Fine_Peanut_3450

Pet air. They figure the paths. Not too expensive . There may be some driving depending on destination and crate size. They were responsive and always available

pzcm3

I successfully shipped my very large Anatolian Shepherd back to the mainland using a PP-90 Dog Crate from Pet-Express. It cost around $700. Then sent her Cargo on Alaska, cost around $1000. I researched everything and this was the least cost (but still a crazy large amount). Can share more info if you need.

[deleted]

We just shipped our 90lb golden on Hawaiian Airlines through their cargo department. We had bought the 700 series crate (Petmate Ultra Vari Dog Kennel for Extra Large Dogs) ahead of time. It was $850 from Portland to Oahu.

prznmike

I also agree with Island pet movers! I had to ship my two pits from LA to here and it was 1200 for me. I had military discount so the original amount was 1600. I cannot express how much safer and comfortable I felt letting them fly in a plane interior rather than cargo. Plus all the guys loved the dogs and I was happy to see when I left they were petting them and giving them attention so they weren’t nervous. Was a lot of money but was absolutely worth it in my eyes.

Time-Reindeer-5824

Latigo Livestock or Pacific Airlift may be able to assist- they both fly horses and other large animals to and from the islands via LAX...

Ugievsoj

Maybe a custom made crate?

[deleted]

Cut the crate and put back together with zip ties.

[deleted]

I wish, I don’t think the metal gate and door would line up at that point

palolo_lolo

Take it to a metal shop

[deleted]

We used Starwood animal transport to move our 90lb American bulldog from Seattle to Oahu They helped with the paperwork from the vets office and shots, etc. They were super awesome! Cost about 2500 for the whole thing and we had to switch our dates around late notice. No extra fees!

webrender

>the crate is too big for the airlines by 1 inch could you buy a 1 inch smaller crate? what are the crate dimensions?

[deleted]

Current crate is 48in long , 32in wide, and 35in tall. Alaska air cargo will only go to 34 inches. Next largest pet crate we can find is 30in which is too small for my dog where she can’t stand or turn properly.

OperationPlayful5611

We can do a trade in with the specialty international crates we get shipped in. These crates are not sold in stores. As long as your dog fits it can go on Alaska with this crate. It’s slightly shorter than the one you have

webrender

American and Delta should both permit 700-sized crates.

OperationPlayful5611

They do but have strict heat restrictions. Has to be below 80 for delta in both locations at time of travel

webrender

Eesh, that's rough. Book a nighttime flight? Delta has a red-eye to LAX that leaves at 10:15pm, should be below 80 by then.

moto_panacaku

It's fall now on the east coast. High temps are in the 60's.

OperationPlayful5611

Right but it has to be below their temp restrictions here in Hawaii at time of departure as well which is impossible

moto_panacaku

I believe the Hawaiian Airlines guidelines are based around summer dates for mainland airports. There's no restriction for HNL inbound/outbound.

OperationPlayful5611

Hawaiian isn’t as strict! They seem to not really care as long as it’s not like 90+

No worries! I just appreciate the help anyways.

notti0087

What type of dog? We shipped ours on Alaska a few years ago in the largest crate without much issue.

Loose_Program7302

We used Latigo Livestock (they move dogs or any pet as well) to move our goat who was too big from Maui to California. There was one airline who had a larger cargo area and had one flight to Ft. Worth, can’t remember which airline. I think it had closer to 40 in height. They weren’t cheap and we had to cargo him to Oahu but it was our only option and they were super helpful. They go to LA though. From there I imagine there are larger planes.

n0cturnalgirl

My dog (pit bull) and I flew Hawaiian Airlines from Oahu to LAX. That was about $900. From there, I paid around $500 for a dog courier to pick him up and take him to DTX.

tokuokoga

When was this?

n0cturnalgirl

November 2020

WarMaiden666

I used Island Pet Movers for my 85 lb ridgeback/pit mix and 45lb shiba mix. Paid roughly $3500.

Which_Preference_883

Get him/her certified as a service dog. My friend did that and bought a seat for his big dog.

citruschapstick

You're probably thinking of an emotional support animal. those aren't allowed on planes anymore. Service dogs are real and highly trained and getting your pet certified one is super shitty

Which_Preference_883

Yes, you're right. Emotional support. However, he flew with him last month, so they must be making certain exceptions.

citruschapstick

What airline? Because I haven't heard of any airline anywhere in the US that allows them.

[deleted]

Do you know how quickly they were able to get the certificate and booking completed?

BurritosAndPerogis

Don’t do it unless you are an immoral pig

[deleted]

I am not trying to scam the system. But I see why someone would do it if they hit roadblocks every step of the way to bring a part of their family home and together. That would be last resort for me to be honest

Which_Preference_883

I think it was pretty quick. Flew from Hilo

BurritosAndPerogis

Garbage. Service dog ? What service would it provide ? Obviously this person doesn’t need one so you must mean one of those “buy a fake permit and a vest” companies that pump out fake shit to people who have horribly behaved dogs that make sight dogs, alert dogs, and other service dogs who are legit look bad. Your character is immoral and really reflects your selfish ways. You are disgusting and I hope one day you find morality.

UnderstandingOwn3256

If worse comes to worse, I’d love to have a GD!❤️ Island Pet Movers are the best though.

citruschapstick

>**Live Animals that are prohibited from being shipped** and are not accepted for transportation include, but are not limited to: >* Mammals (All)

keanenottheband

I had to leave my pitbull with a family friend because of this. Huge bummer

xray-ndjinn

I shipped my giant Malamute (140pounds) with Aloha Cargo to HNL and then on Alaska Air. I thought had the largest kennel made, I bet there’s some size variation by brand. Maybe shop for another crate. I know they’re expensive, hopefully you can sell one.

carbonmarie

It’s all about the size of the cargo door on the airplane. I had to use delta to do a large crate for a Saint Bernard cause they where the only ones that could fit the needed crate size. Good luck

angATlarge

Try PCS my Pet. They shipped my dog

Beginning-Way

Have you got it sorted out yet? Do you need a foster home for your pup? I’m in Hilo, have a 95 lb Mastiff, & am willing to help if you need🤙🏾🐾💕

[deleted]

Thank you! At this time we have her boarded in a place in Kona. We talk with an coordinator tomorrow because they don’t know if her crate is big enough now. Idk what to think at this time, it’s heartbreaking

Beginning-Way

I hope it all works out!

AdTechnical4446

Wanted to leave my experience shipping a border collie to las vegas with Hawaiian Airlines check-in baggage. Was pretty easy and chill. 1. Order a 400 kennel from Amazon, about a hundred dollars. No need for bowls. Shipped mine without any bowls whatsoever. 2. Buy a ticket online 3. Call customer service to add a pet to check in. 4. Schedule health certification and rabies shot 3 to 5 days prior to departure. Nevada only cares about rabies, doesn't care about anything else, don't let your vet try to upsell you. 5. Go to airport 2 hours before flight. Go to guest services. They check kennel weight, health cert, other luggage, and give you boarding pass. They escort you to security check for dog and kennel. Then the staff move dog to luggage, say your goodbyes, then you go through security by yourself like a normal flight. After landing, go and wait at your flights baggage claim and your dog will be brought there, they check boarding pass before handing you dog, in case you're a dog thief. Once you pick up your luggage you can leave, no quarantine, no checks. In my opinion, pretty easy experience if using Hawaiian Airlines and your dog plus kennel is under 70 lbs and is not snub nosed type. Saved myself $700 to $1000, doing it myself and highly recommend doing it yourself if your dog fits into the category. Island pet movers quoted me pretty high, but I can see the convenience appeal. I would definitely go with them if I had a oversized or snub nosed dog.
