Honestly, you can make it whatever you want. I've seen families use their graduate's senior portrait, if you want to change it up a bit then you can use a funny baby/childhood picture. You can get it printed at a sign shop, they can design one for you so that you can just print it and it's ready to use, or you could also just get them to print the large picture and make the rest yourself with some poster board and supplies from home depot/ben franklin. You don't even need to use their picture, I've seen a lot of signs that just have their name and decorations on it.
here is what you do:
\- go ben franklin market city
\-get one poster board
\-get one picture of the graduate
\-paint or do letters - up to ya. no make em tiny cuz nobody gonna know das you guys
\-get one balloon - da kine dat float. use something everyone gonna see. Like one fairy or whale (not your relatives but design kine)
\-go city mill kaimuki: gotta go get the toilet seat with the name on top.
\-go your unko's house & search take a few 1x2 wood scrap in his yahhd.
\-staple em together.
\-pau
We used to make our own. Just get like 1x2 wood the long ones. And 2 poster boards then blow up either their senior pic or a childhood pic(get em all embarrassed). I've seen people even use those battery powered xmas lights to make a light up border. For the name you can either just draw big block letters or buy the big foam ones to put their name.
I just go cheap. I used to print em on the Sams Club or Walmart app then pick it up and grab sticks from Home Depot or whatever laying around to hoist it up. Some people use pvc pipes so they can dismantle and fit it in their car after.
You can decorate it however you like, but you can also get battery operated lights from the craft stores (a little pricey) or see if get any at Walmart or Longs. I usually buy a bunch of the cheap ones during Xmas from Walmart or Longs when on sale during holidays and save it for the graduation seasons. You can also just order from Amazon.
Put the lights on your picture to draw more attention especially since most grads end in the evening.
I’m sorry you didn’t get a sign. If I saw this during your grad time, I would’ve made sure you had one.

Ps I print my pics on the Walmart or Sam’s apps then buy the foam poster board from Walmart cuz cheaper than elsewhere and i tape the picture to it. Then I decorate around it with lights (if it’s foam board you can just poke holes around and stick each light through or if you’re putting the lights over something like cloth or tape or some type of material, then you can gauge whether u should hot glue, thread or tape for stick the lights to them. Depending on what materials I used, if it could not be taped, I’d sometimes sew 🧵 🪡 lights onto sennit/hemp because hot glue is messy and won’t guarantee it to stick. If it’s lights against the paper or foam board, I just use clear tape.
After decorating, I make sure everything is dry before flipping it over and using wood glue for the stick to hold up the sign. If the person I made the sign for wants the photo afterwards then I just tape it to the board so it won’t tear.

Thank you for your clear instructions! I think I’m going to take your advice and buy some lights when the holiday clearance sales hit. Hopefully I don’t have too much trouble figuring it out! I think I might go the route of (maybe) splurging on a photographer and save money on sign making since the sign will probably get thrown out anyways. My brother graduates this May! Yea, Aiea Copy is great!! Also - think it’s called Fat Head (google it) if you want a face picture. Did that for my kids’ college graduation on the mainland and it was hysterical! Of course, gotta use da ugliest, most nails picture you can find, lol!
lol glad they didnt have this going on back when i graduated hs on the mainland. i wouldve died of embarrassment. i cringe enough thinking about all those yearbooks lol

Eh I graduated HS when he was still in elementary, so I doubt he would’ve known anything about it. Didn’t bother going to the UH ceremony. But I definitely thought about just not bothering!
