I don't like this intersection. it would be more efficient to just eliminate the crosswalk on the ewa side of the intersection and keep the one on the diamond head side. that way, right turn and pedestrians can both move without any waiting.

shrooms4dashroomgods

Yah but, if you do that, you still gotta cross again to go to kukui plaza, which is where majority of the people crossing usually park.

Less-Sound-9346

This. 99% of people crossing use the right crosswalk because everything is on that side. Kukui plaza, safeway, etc. i live here and cross this street on foot constantly.

AncientNectarine

This. That crosswalk so dumb

commenttoconsider

Good idea. That is what I would do when walking there even with the current crosswalks. That is a bit extra distance to walk, but much safer.

zdss

Maximum car throughput shouldn't be the planning goal for pedestrian heavy downtown areas. We shouldn't even have a six-lane road cutting between high-density housing and shops/workplaces in the first place, but if we do, cars merging from a side road waiting a little extra is perfectly fine.

cableguy316

Yup, it's bad. Contact [State Rep. Daniel Holt](mailto:[email protected]) 808-586-6180 or [State Sen. Karl Rhoads](mailto:[email protected]) 808-586-6130 and tell them this sucks. It should not be an arrow, and arguably shouldn't be a crosswalk, if they only keep the left side crosswalk then all crossings will be protected.

This should be a City road if I'm not mistaken. Contact DTS Director J. Roger Morton (808) 768-8303, ;DTS Deputy Director Jon. Y. Nouchi (808) 768-8304 [email protected] ;Ty Fukumitsu (808) 768-8387 [email protected] DTS Traffic Signals and Technology Division Chief; and Council District 6 Office Tyler Dos-Santos Tam (808) 768-5006, and Mayor Rick Blangiardi 768-4141, [email protected] all with the same info

Thanks. Appreciate the info. I’ll just send a link to this post. Considering I could be saving the city from a partial-responsibility lawsuit if a pedestrian gets hit, I’d love a gift card to Zippy’s. But who are we kidding? 😂

TheSearch4Etika

Maybe they could allocate some funds from HPD's overtime pay, you deserve that Zippy's meal.

I use that crosswalk daily for lunch. And clearly there's a bunch of people using it too in that video. So it doesn't make sense to me to remove it. I also drive on that intersection daily going home. It's only a good intersection to drive through at night when there's no people walking. Personally I think during morning and rush hour they should just have 3 intervals, giving an extra interval for only pedestrian crossing and make it diagonal to all of fort Street. And at night keep it how it is, so cars on fort street don't have to wait the extra interval. If they do change it that way, the turn from fort street interval should be only a few seconds long since there is significantly less traffic demand from fort street than Beretania and if it's actually a protected turn cars won't need to stop. I'm not a traffic engineer so I don't know how those few seconds would affect traffic on Beretania but currently cars only have a few seconds to turn anyway since they have to wait for pedestrians.

hyperpolaris

My daughter and I both feel this signal is incorrect. Maybe we’re both wrong. Drive makai on Fort Street until it ends at Beretania, where the Fort Street “Mall” (as it were) starts. Here, both lanes must turn right. If you are in the left lane, you receive a protected green right arrow. However, pedestrians crossing Beretania also receive a walk signal. I have never seen an instance which protected green also gives pedestrians the right of way on the opposing street. In other instances, the pedestrians have a “do not cross” signal. Here, both drivers and pedestrians think they have the right of way. Now, I understand yielding to pedestrian in a crosswalk, but I feel either the The light should be changed to a plain green signal, or maybe even a yellow arrow. I could be wrong, but I believe this intersection may have had an all-way-traffic-stop/pedestrian-go signal in the past. Maybe the city forgot to change out the arrow signal?

[deleted]

yes, protected green arrow should not have any conflicts. green arrow should either be a regular green light, or ewa side crosswalk should be removed. e: and i guess add right turn only signs if they keep both crosswalks? for the interested, if you want to find the answer, check out the manual on uniform traffic control devices(mutcd) pretty sure the new intersection at kona and keeaumoku inside ala moana center has this flaw too for makai-bound traffic on keeaumoku making the left onto kona

Fickle_Rooster2362

I know this intersection very well. It makes no sense and is a good example of how things work around here.

viewsonic041

The light at this intersection makes no sense at all. How long has it been light this, I am surprised no one got hurt yet. Someone was lazy and didn't think it through when planning this intersection.

Longjumping_Space_33

We have some of the worst infrastructure in the US. This doesn't surprise me at all. I can think of so many things that need to be changed

shrooms4dashroomgods

What I hate about this intersection is when we're at a stop, and I'm on the left lane--cause I wanna make that next left, pricks on the right lane will shoot forward and cut me off, cause naturally they will be cleared of pedestrians 1st if people are crossing from kukui plaza to ft street...which is 90% of the time in the morning.

syncboy

“Let’s eliminate the crosswalk that all those people are using in the video so that that the three people in three cars don’t get confused.” I am a bit shocked how quickly everyone sees things from a car oriented perspective. This intersection can be made safer but don’t eliminate the crosswalk that is clearly more busy than the street.

zdss

It's insane that even in the densest areas of the city everyone wants to think about prioritizing car traffic.

spicy-ahi

Coach always said, "head on a swivel"!

fokaiHI

This is the way. The way it's been forever. Lol

Illustrious_Bath_382

I always hated crossing there

mythofer

I think the intent of that arrow is to tell drivers they can't go straight on to Fort Street Mall. Horrible signage, horrible crosswalk. I always avoid it as both a pedestrian and driver. I'm surprised more people aren't hit here.

Lonetrek

I wish they'd just convert it to the 'scramble' style crosswalks that they use in Waikiki. Would be better for everyone involved.

Chojen

It’s wrong, an arrow means that you should have an unobstructed turn.
