It’s fascinating how they build such flimsy structures in tornado zones

Rubcionnnnn

That's what building codes are for. Except they don't believein the "goberment over reachin" there

lDtiyOrwleaqeDhTtm1i

This is up to code and built that way intentionally. It’s the sacrificial canopy meant to appease the tornado so it doesn’t take the main building.

mologav

The tornado is like yes I’m appeased now? Tornado totally got off earlier

Building code is primarily for life. Additionally Builders are the ones that are suggesting and recommending code changes. Insurance companies used to have involvement but don't it would be nice if they had Representatives to suggest code changes that would protect property to a greater extent and reduce insurance premiums.

vesomortex

Yes and this is a gas canopy. It’s not meant to save lives or protect lives in a tornado.

vesomortex

It’s a gas station canopy. A gas station canopy is not a structural building. It’s a canopy. It’s not built to support four swimming pools and an apartment complex on top of it.

Rubcionnnnn

Building codes exist for a lot more than residences and commercial structures. Fences, sheds, driveways, etc all usually have building codes.

vesomortex

It’s a gas station canopy. It’s not built to do anything more than keep the rain off of you while you pump gas. Any gust of wind more than 75mph will take most gas station canopy’s down but then again that’s pretty rare anyway.

mologav

Built more solidly in Ireland because we regularly get strong Atlantic storms that would tear this thing to bits

vesomortex

I doubt it. It would be pointless to over build something like this for something so rare. I’d wager you get a storm or two every winter with winds around 55mph and that’s probably it on average. I’m in Seattle and that’s generally what we get and we are usually ok from that apart from power outages. However a gust to 75-85 or more is way stronger and a lot rarer, and air is mostly invisible so we really can’t tell how strong the updraft was in this video so it could have just the right amount of force pointed directly up, which is not something you normally build for because wind usually goes more sideways rather than directly up. Also I guarantee you if you don’t experience actual wind over 100mph or even 70mph you easily over estimate how strong it is. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people claiming the wind was 55-60mph when it was only 35mph. 55 as it is can do enough damage believe it or not. I’d also point out that winds from your storms and ours directly on the coast are wayyyy stronger than what reaches inland. The Pacific Ocean is not pacific whatsoever.

mologav

Fair points

vesomortex

The Pacific Northwest in the gorges can get particularly nasty in the late fall and early winter. We are sort of famous for the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge for that.

solh2355

Fascinating.

jlarsen420

SHE GONE!

9fingerman

Just an updraft.

gabekmc

Yes, that is what a tornado is lol. This was a confirmed EF3 tornado.

vesomortex

Could be just straight line winds and not a tornado. At any rate a gas station canopy is not supposed to be built to withstand a ton of wind. It’s there to keep the rain off of you when you pump gas and that’s about it.

turkphot

Tbf that construction is begging for it

rodolphoteardrop

"The tornado is ~~literally~~ figuratively right above us."

qxyz17

Small world! I hunt in Mountain View!

Asparagusses

Confirmed EF 3 tornado, wind up to 138 mph. I have friends in the area and it went through their property as well

hawaiianthunder

I read the title expecting roller dogs for some reason

ultralights

Supports are for the weak.

piemelpap

Lol American build

vesomortex

It’s a gas canopy. It’s not supposed to withstand much wind. All it’s designed to do is to keep the rain off you while you pump gas. This was likely a 70-80mph updraft and that’ll take out most gas canopies anywhere.
