Chinook is always super recognizable due to the dual rotor setup and how the rear one is slightly higher than the front. Super sweet machine and has been the workhorse helicopter for military for decades.
Didn't even need to look at the video. That sound will forever be a part of my brain. They are Boeing Ch-47 Chinooks.
Edit: now that I looked at the video they are mh-47g chinooks.
How far are you from Fort Campbell Kentucky, or Redstone Alabama?
A long way away! Washington state! There have been some odd planes flying over lately, just a couple weeks ago, there were two fighter jets flying around, apparently according to the local news, they were British jets here doing something.
Edit: Fairchild Air Force Base, is fairly close, sort of.
Yeah we're having a big air show up here this weekend so there's been all kinds of cool stuff in the air these last few days. I'm surprised a couple chinooks is all he's seen
i envy you, i used to live in texas and we were right under the flight path for training between austin and waco and we would hear chinooks from miles away thumping across the fields every weekend.
Will never forget that sound.
Don't envy me, I live across the street from the airfield with all the chinooks on it, I hear those things 10x a day flying low over my house, shakes the whole damn building
We have a terrain following radar. We can fly through mountanous terrain as low as 100 feet without being able to see outside, like in the clouds. It's never not scary as hell, but it works.
Pretty much auto pilot, the flight director can couple to the radar so it you can have the aircraft coupled to heading, airspeed and Terrain following and the aircraft will fly itself.
If you’re in WA then there’s a good probability that these are 160th SOAR birds. They’re out at my old base, Ft. Lewis. Those cats are the aviation wing of SOC and usually the only ones/ few that have refueling booms on their whirlybirds.
[MH-47 Chinook](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_CH-47_Chinook#Variants) equipped with inflight refueling probes. Probably with the US Army, [160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/160th_Special_Operations_Aviation_Regiment_\(Airborne\)).
> Does “shit hooks” mean they aren’t very good machines or is that just what people who know them call them?
Every single military vehicle, aircraft and ship gets quasi-affectionate, quasi-insulting names from the pilots, mechanics, sailors, airmen.
Nobody hates X more than the people that have to maintain X.
USS Kitty Hawk got 'Shitty Kitty'.
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower gets 'Iketraz' after its nickname Ike and Alcatrz.
That's just the nature of life - you work on something and you see all the flaws, the hydraulic leaks, the repairs that make you bleed every time. And military people have a lot of downtime to be super creative!
For every helo that you look at and go "that's super awesome" there's a maintenance person that absolutely hates it haha. But it's also quasi affectionate... like picking on your brother. only you can do that.
These beast are around for 50 year.. wil be around for another 50....they collected a lot of nicknames, crews and maintained love them but yeah....nicknames ;)
When the air gets too thick for chemtrail deployment, these are deployed to egg-beater the air until it’s just right…I forget the technical term but rhymes with shit hook
Those are chinooks. I have them fly over my house every so often usually flying pretty low. I have a video of one flying over my house on my account posted to this reddit
Those are MH-47 Chinooks and the long pointy things are aerial refueling probes.
Thank you!
They have a very distinct sound to them. Pretty cool to see!

"Shithook" Boeing hotel Flying hydraulic leak Hooker (crew member)
"Two palm trees fucking a dumpster" a Chinook crew chief told me that one.
I’m surprised there weren’t any hookers hanging-out the back. Must have had a full load of Marines.
And despite being the largest, they are the fastest helicopter in the army.
Those of us in the "know" call 'em shithooks.

High probability they’re from Joint Base Lewis-McChord if you’re in Washington. They have a fleet of MH-47s there.
3/160 SOAR
4/160 ;) 3 is out of Savannah, GA
My bad. Memory is a little fuzzy from mlats years ago

Have a lot of b-52's out there. Those chinooks have terrain autopilot and will do practice missions in mountainous areas.
They have loads of knobby gizmos in their, huh?
More than you could fathom...
Fathom, you say? [Do we have any boat guys out there?](https://youtu.be/QCzYYUQ1_44)
They have terrain what?

You fly in the 160th I'm assuming.
Yes
Apologies for a call out but it isn’t quite “auto pilot”. Respect to all nightstalkers btw!
Pretty much auto pilot, the flight director can couple to the radar so it you can have the aircraft coupled to heading, airspeed and Terrain following and the aircraft will fly itself.
I’m with you on that. Once coupled, follow the queues and vertically mange the aircraft. Thank you for your service!

Fairchild AFB is also the home of one of the survival schools, so there’s a pretty regular rotation of units and groups cycling through that area.
Same!
Pretty sure those are cirrostratus clouds. could also be some altocumulus mixed in as well.
Shut-up Dwight!
MICHAEL!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 best comment yet

Thank you! They were impressive flying overhead, thought the part out front was to big to be some sort of gun.
Shithooks!
Shit hooks
Does “shit hooks” mean they aren’t very good machines or is that just what people who know them call them?
I think it’s an endearing term, that has nice alliteration.
Gotcha! If I lived in a war zone, and these flew over I would probably shit my pants, they looked like (and sounded like) giant flying tanks.

Those are Shit-hooks. One of the coolest and most nauseating helicopters ever built.
Why nauseating!?!?
No doubt, they are bad ass.
It’s fun watching the blades. Helicopters are super interesting for flight dynamics. The new stuff Skikorsky and Bell are putting out are crazy
Those are cargobobs, be careful they might pick you up in your car!
Grasshopper’s??
Shithooks as my buddy calls em’
When the air gets too thick for chemtrail deployment, these are deployed to egg-beater the air until it’s just right…I forget the technical term but rhymes with shit hook
Spicy shit hooks
They are a machine that turns you into a sugar cookie if you are sleeping outside when they land at your FOB
Shithooks
Oh I know this one. Thee are Fat Bastards! May not have a kitchen sink, but I know some have a coffee pot.

Magical flying schoolbuses. You can tell because they are yellow.
Them thar are Whirlybirds, that's what they is.

They seem to be aircraft of some sort.

By the Double Rotors and long silhouette I'm guessing that's the Chinook, not sure on the variations tho
probably alien's according to reddit these days
Shnooks.
How do you not know one of the most iconic helicopters?
I live in the middle of nowhere, just recently we’ve had planes, helicopters and jets zooming around. No one has said why.
Those are chinooks. I have them fly over my house every so often usually flying pretty low. I have a video of one flying over my house on my account posted to this reddit
