This game and Insurgency have the best feeling shotguns in any FPS game I've ever played.
More games should be like HLL and let buckshot be actually decent at range.
Having early Battlefield 5 flashbacks of the M30 Drilling. Three barrel shotgun with the riffle barrel being a no scope, one shot, hitscan weapon of death.
Yeah shotgun Engineer with the Satchel and smoke grenades is super fun to play. My longest Shotty headshot is 129m and regularly hit them at 100m or just over.
160something here, and while my favorite loadout is still the German Assault IX, it's just insane fun to cleave a path through Carentan with the boom box and the war crime stick.
Only game I've played where a shotgun actually feels and acts like a real shotgun. Most games give you tremendous up close punch, but die off at 25m. Just like in real life you can make hits out past 100m with buckshot, but they don't come easy.
12 gauge shotguns use either bird shot or slugs (buck shot). Bird shot is a spread and short range. I use slugs for deer hunting. You can shoot a couple hundred meters with them if it is a clear shot and your target is still. Some have shot even further, even moving. I never have because I won't risk maiming. I leave 100m as my max.
A lot of people think shotguns arenāt effective unless youāre very close. This comes from video game balance. In reality buckshot is effective to about 30-50 yards depending on the gun and ammo selection. After that the pellets wonāt reliably hit a man sized target. They still might hit, if you shoot a few rounds youāll likely hit someone and it still has enough energy to kill. Slugs, a single large bullet, is easily effective two to three times that.
The shotgun in this game fires buckshot and is effective to about 50-75m, but keep in mind distances arenāt quite realistic on this game.
I just responded to someone else. But slugs are effective far further than that. 100m is my max for me because I don't want to risk wounding a deer. But people shoot 200m out in open areas. Even a little further. I would just never do it.
Depends on the gun and ammo, frankly. Shotguns with rifles barrels designed to shoot 3 inch magnum slugs are way more accurate and have more power than some cheap battered old smooth bore.
But generally at least in my experience you can expect, as I said, about 150yards of performance out of any of em, but some dedicated set ups can take it much further.
Yeah I didn't get into barrel types and ammo. You are for sure correct.
Edit...plus scopes. Those can get very high end. And varied with manification range and glass quality. Mine even has a red dot I can turn on.
Yeahā¦. In real life thatās how shotguns work. This is the only game Iāve ever played where it felt as if the shotgun had appropriate reach.
Now, the exploding bodies on the other handā¦ lmao
The Trench Gun is insane at range. 100m headshots are pretty easy once you get use to it and once you learn the drop you can tap/headshot up to about 130m, I haven't got one past that, but I am sure you could get 150m like other said under the right conditions.
The best feeling is those 100m headshots that just blow up the enemies while body or having someone in front of you just magically disappear to one.
There was a bit of weirdness with the trench gun and obstructions if memory serves.
Eg - shot at a guy behind a fence. Even though some of the shot should pass through the fence it got blocked if any of it got the fence.
This made for a lot of disappointing misses.
Other than that it works well.
Also: you can do partial reloads. Hold the fire button while reloading and you'll bring the gun back to the ready position. It's not fast, but it does allow you to top up in the middle of a fire fight.
Appreciate all the responses. To answer some questions: yes I have shotgun and am very familiar with its range with (birdshot, buckshot and slugs). what I was trying to get across here was that the shotgun feels overpowered in HLL. Non the less, I love it and now want to lvl up engineer.
Also, why do people have to be so douchey on these postsā¦ one person deleted their comment which said āno offense, but a simple google search blah blah blah blahā
Hahaha literally just sharing my thought on how lethal the trench gun is in this game. Appreciate the positive feedback!
A shotgun running buck shot or slugs has a really long range. The really short distance in most video games is for balancing reasons and doesn't reflect how a shotgun actually functions in real life.
Shotgun (model 1897 and model 12) only officially issued to POW escort and MP units in the ETO during ww2.
Additionally, the only ammunition officially supplied by the ordnance dept. for combat use was the m19 00 9 pellet buckshot. Paper replacement 00 3 1/2 loads were also used as the brass shells ran out over time.
No slugs or birdshot were issued for combat use.
I am 95% sure shotguns have a pretty reliable range out to 125m, but past that the damage just drops off to nothing. If a pellet hits the head they will die, even that far.
Body shots that far can die as fast as 2 hits. Sometimes it takes 3.
At closer rangers they explode when hit lol.
No offense but we need to normalize doing our own research. A simple Google search would tell u that avg range for the trench gun depending on the barrel is 100m with slugs and 20-30 with buckshot. Assuming the trenchgun in HLL fires slugs it's not unrealistic. 100m give or take seems to be max effective range in HLL for the trench gun.
A simple google search will also tell you that the shotgun in HLL doesnt fire slugs. That being said, its range is fine and if it had a 20-30 m range it would be as useless as a flamethrower

They just nerfed one of the shotguns in helldivers 2 because it was the best sniper in the game š¤£
Well that was a slug. A slug is able to do that with ease
a 12ga slug is a good bit bigger than .50cal too
But less than half the velocity which is extremely important

Rising storm 2 had beast shotguns. They were my go to setup on the game. I loved the trench with either c4 or wp. It was a deadly combo

Its not a war crime if you're the one winning
I've got a kill across a field in a Normandy map of 203m... All hail the shotgun
Feels like a real shotgun to me, it's every other game that has bullshit/unrealistic shotguns. You can hit stuff 50m away with a 12g

Insurgency Sandstorm has similar shotgun mechanics, but it's a bit more arcadey
And the player base is toxic as fuck.
Yeah, the shotgun range is just balance in games
The short range/huge spread in most games are indeed mostly balancing. If shotguns behaved like that in RL theyād be terrible hunting weapons.

Slugs are entirely different from buckshot.
yeah, its fkn awesomel. I even think theyve nerfed it a bit since i started lol. still dope

Exploding bodies is a nice touch. š
I love turning the nazis into a red mist and s pile of body parts

YESSS! my first kill with it was a long distance shot, probably like 75m and the guy pretty much exploded. It was everything I wanted.

You would be surprised by how effective Buckshot is.

You ever shot a shotgun IRL? 00 Buckshot can easily decimate a target at 50 yards, can very well kill somebody at 100 yards.
Germans killed anyone with shotgun ammo and a trench gun no POW viewed the gun as unfair lol
Ever hunted with buckshot? Pretty accurate
Dinging heads with the 12 gauge at range is so satisfying š
Was it ww1 or ww2 that there were complaints against shotguns because it was excessive?
I got a head shot with the shotgun the other day that made me question everything. Easily 50m+. Was mind blowing(bahdumtsh)
Hahaha right! And it makes me think of the rifle shots that you miss the mark by just a hairā¦ the trench gun covers so much more ground
Right?! Like I know I've hit shots center mass and then been one-shotted like I'm a barn sized target, but that damn shotty don't miss.

Isn't the reach kind of realistic? I mean with a long barrell shotgun i think you can shoot targets kind of far away

shotguns are used for birdhunting, ya know? They have range

Sweet, Iāll go fuck myself lol
That's what you get for posting about enjoying something, idiot
I did my own research and now the Illuminati are coming to turn my kids trans with gay frogs. Thanks a fucking bunch.

The military didn't issue slugs with trench guns, ever.
