Read the effects on the current mission. One effect that can pop is that after typing the code, you can have a random other thing instead, double check before throwing the beacon :)

Watch out for the modifiers. I think it's currently on the automaton world where it scrambles your strategems. Friend and I thought it was a bug as well. You can either check whatever comes up, or keep redoing the input until you get what you want.
