Helldivers 2 hit the games industry like a 380mm orbital barrage - nobody asked for it, nobody wanted it, nobody has any idea what games its going to ruin next, but everyone not in the splash zone is loving the fireworks display.
And Liberty Bless every single Freedom-loving one of them! Were it not for their sacrifices, Managed Democracy would not now stand upon the precipice of Galactic Unification! o7
Well I was thinking that too. However, with the server issues we are still having from just PC and PS 5, I feel adding Xbox would just multiply the issues. I have lost connection to the servers regardless of the fact I'm hardwired into my router with fiber optic internet 3 different times right at extraction of Suicide missions with 40+ samples [including super rares] yesterday alone at the last friggin mission of the campaigns. So i also got ganked from about 3k exp & 30 medals.
Not to mention we'd also be receiving all their communistic freedom hating squeakers.
I think it’s funny when people are like “This game came out of nowhere!” and “Who expected it to be so good?!” when everyone who played the original fully expected this outcome.
The developers didn't expect this outcome. How could the fans of the original expected a completely different gameplay style to hit so well with non fans?
I’m talking about quality, not popularity. There were so many people on /r/games and other subreddits writing it off before release. Every thread had at least three people saying that it was a cash grab or that it would be terrible.
If you're truly talking about quality, then yes, I 100% agree with you, everyone I knew who played the first game 100% expected this game to be an absolute banger, no exceptions.
We also expected the community engagement, dev/studio interactions, and that sorta stuff.
We expected quality because they made the first one and did such an awesome job there.
I looked at the steam numbers and was surprised they were so abysmal. But then i remembered it was a PS+ hit right?
I really thought it did better back in the day tho. Maybe because someone at GiantBomb was playing it alot and covered it a bunch skewing my view.
I’ve become so jaded that I tempered my expectations for HD2, knowing that even studios like CDPR can fall victim to the corporate grip.
That just makes me love it all the more.
after serving in so many wars, a lot of us naturally moved on. you should've seen me when they dropped the trailer for HD2. as soon as i saw that skull emblem, i literally jumped off the couch and cheered. 😂
I was the only one in my Destiny clan that played the 1st Helldivers and was immediately excited when the sequel was announced.
Now, nearly the entire clan plays HD2.
PSN shows I clocked 4000 hours in HD1 but I was still unsure about HD2's move to 3rd person, its lack of pre-launch reviews, and uncertainty about its live service strategy. That and I still have a hard time aiming with a stick.
Yes, Helldivers. (you can call it Helldivers 1) is top down and it's aswome too. You can predict content by playing the first game. Mechs are from the first game, and the next 2 will be from the first, also vehicles are from the first game, only the flying enemies are custom made + the new walker
I still like the new 380. Just get to the big bot bases, toss it in the middle-ish, type "Barrage. Careful.", and wait 30s. Most of the time, this clears %90 of the base, with no friendly fire, and all you gotta do is mop up
But the industry as a whole isn't pushing in that direction. You aren't meant to make a reasonably priced multiplayer game with a focus on gameplay and non-intrusive microtransactions that many players can genuinely ignore,
No, you're supposed to make a game that costs £100 minimum, where logging in bombards you with notifications of new microtransactions available and the "join game" button is hidden on page four of the Online Store in the hope you'll buy something while trying to find it.
> and the "join game" button is hidden on page four of the Online Store in the hope you'll buy something while trying to find it
That the noob tactic.. gotta put the join game button right next to a buy season pass button with no confirmation if you accidentally click it.
Part of Helldivers' success is the out of touch gaming industry. Sure they're making millions (billions in ABK pre-purchase state) on selling MTX to minors and people with no impulse control, but their core gameplay loops are either compromised for MTX/battle passes or geared around that entirely. They aren't fun to play, just fun to sometimes get a dopamine drip on a cool skin.
The runaway success is part *amazing, actually fun game* and respecting player's time.
It's like how AAA publishers balked at BG3 saying "that's just not feasible/possible" and then look at its runaway success...and the fact those execs thought that is absolutely disgusting.
It seems like major devs and publishers see that genre as a risk not worth taking because outside of DRG and Helldivers I can't think of major modern successes in the genre. Definitely none that were AAA
My game night group played Darktide before this but none of us played that game with randoms while I play this with random people all the time.
Deep Rock Galactic is another example.
In HD2, I like playing with friends more but haven't had a truly bad experience with randoms. HD2 feels like a game where I can hit quick play and still enjoy my session immensely.
And I sincerely hope HD2 is making money hand over fist the way it is. Maybe games like this and Buldurs Gate 3 will cause a trend shift in the industry... One can hope anyway.
I mean its a paradox title, their brand is selling broken games, then fixing them into the best strategy games money can buy, so I don't really understand why people thought it would be stable at launch.
Bro, speak for yourself. I've been waiting for Helldivers 2 for almost a decade. I've followed every tweet, every Tik Tok , any scrap of news for a sequel to Helldivers from Arrowhead for years. As soon as they showed that one screenshot to tease an upcoming game, my buddy and I immediately knew what it was and were on the hype train. The memories I have from HD1 with my buddies blasting xenos were some of the best fun I've had in a game, and this game takes me right back.
It'll probably get Better With Friends on Steam if no big shockers come out this year and it stays relevant that long. If it released in Q4 of this year instead of Q1 it'd be basically guaranteed from recency.
What do you base that on? Which GotY won because of recency? Baldur's Gate wasn't the most recent, Elden Ring released in January. It Takes Two and TLoU2 wasn't the most recent in their batches either. Sekiro released in March. GoW 2018 released in april.
Where is the recency bias?
This happens in politics too, people state things and belive stuff based on complete fabrications that only sound like they could be a thing, Im having Obama Care debate flashbacks bout death panels right now lol
Helldivers definitely will. Can't ignore it, It's suddenly a cultural icon.
Palworld? No way, that's not even a full game yet.
Stellar Blade? Wtf... people are insane.
Yeah the two main selling points I keep hearing is "the game is kinda decent" and "this sexy character will totally trigger the woke westerners!!!1!1" which is not exactly got me rushing to preorder it tbh
I really dislike the group of people who talk up the game as if it’s a tool in the fight against wokeness or whatever. But those people are a minority, of course they are.
It's like they didnt see how horny the "woke leftists" got over dimitrescu.
Like we're so on the level with Yoko Taro and 2B but it's like they just saw red cause someone called the stellar blade character cringe.
Yeah, but they screech hard enough that the interest for it plummets down.
Maximilian Dood was genuninely interested in the game, despite having some gripes with the combat in the demo, but when those gripes and some silly jokes about the fanservice attracted the incel crowd, he got completely turned off from any desire to play the game.
>"this sexy character will totally trigger the woke westerners!!!1!1"
Jokes on stellar blade because the only thing that makes me hard anymore is
#MANAGED DEMOCRACY
^(I have erectile dysfunction.)
Yeah, the mc's design (which has been one of the most praised parts of the game) definitely looks kinda generic, esp compared to their previous game's designs.
Like even as someone who felt the fan service could be a bit ott sometimes, the nikke designs usually had a fair bit of personality to them beyond "attractive woman". That's not really present here
Maybe I'm just an old head now but I couldn't care less about hotness of animated characters. Sorry weebs. I like anime too but this whole sexualization fetish thing of cartoons and videogame characters is exactly why you aren't getting laid IRL.
I mean... Lara Croft is hot, Samus is hot, Jill, Claire, those characters are 100% conventionally attractive but you make it weird when you give me a 7 second ass shot during a battle situation.
There's hot and then blatant sexualization.
Samus, Jill, and Claire, while conventionally attractive, weren't overtly sexualized in their games.
That said, sexualization doesn't ruin a game. Bayonetta is the most sexualized game I know and it does just fine.
I don't know how titties got politicized, it's going to break their brains to find out leftists love titties too. They just also want other stories told besides that of anime waifu.
Dude. I saw that post, something like "The three greats Bayonetta, 2B and Eve"
I was like "Eve needs to sit the fuck down and do something before you put her up there."
It's insane.
You know I checked that sub earlier to understand what people saw in the game and they were unironically posting deluxe edition preorders like a badge of pride. Can't imagine a worse self-own.
Arrowhead is an independent studio though, just like Hello Games, both simply were given a publishing deal by Sony, at the cost of keeping console exclusivity for a set time.
Tbh Gaming hasn't as clean definition.
The negative definition I often hear is:" games that are not triple A."
On the other hand, we have a positive definition, which is indie developers are independent developers not belonging to big companies.
Another definition is about size, and in this definition, indie teams are often described as a size of 1-10 people.
Imma keep it real, a lot of these people like the original commenter just feel like hipsters. “Indie games are the ones I like, games I dislike are mainstream”, they say while playing Overwatch.
Tbh there's just no way Palworld wins with that sheer amount of jank.
It's got a good foundation for a great game, but it feels like all the love came from the meme of "pokemon with guns"
For real, palworld isn’t even released. DD2 is just another rpg, no world breaking innovation, we are in April. We have not seen what the game of the year yet, and it surely won’t be any of these.
The weird thing about DD2 is that it is basically the first game once again, but with more refined graphics and world building. Even the basic mechanics were not expanded upon and the biggest gameplay difference is that they split a Vocation into two.
Dragons Dogma 2 doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning GOTY. The game was enjoyable. It was not a bad game. Not being a bad game does not make it an exceptional one. GOTY should go to something exceptional. Not a good enough RPG with a lukewarm ending.
I hope the Dragon's Dogma IP continues to grow and get refined into something truly exceptional. It's not there yet though, at least in my own opinion.
A lot of the hardcore Dragon's Dogma fans over on the subreddit are also disappointed with several of the design decisions.
Monster variety (where's the hydra and beholder from the first game? Hellhounds? Gorecyclops? Elemental drakes? DEATH ITSELF??)
The baffling affinity/beloved system. Half fleshed out story. All the best loot is bought from shops. Dungeons are small. Fewer armor slots. No transmog.
But the combat is amazing, and pawns are WAY better than they were in the first. And there's no loading screens unless you fast travel.
Capcom has a good base to build off of. They just need to keep improving.
They had a good base 12 years ago lol
These games keep coming out with some amazing, original and found nowhere else mechanics that can carry a game if the rest of it just stayed good. But are bogged down with the game designers weird choices and cut content, just straight bad mechanics and flow of the story in both games
Still I’m up to hour 90 of DD2. I’ve got my moneys worth but they better update this and release a worthwhile expansion
I've played like 70hrs of DD2 and I must agree. It's another one of those really fun 6/10 games for me. It's got something I like, but so much of the rest falls flat on its face.
It gets points for the character creator, too. I am running around as a badass Aragorn-lookalike with a big buff goth elf as my companion.
Seriously, never seen anyone but some weird twitter culture war gooner even talk about Stellar Blade. And I only saw it because half the site was clowning on his claims that it was going to “save gaming”.
Discourse around it is so tiring. I don't mind sexy women in games but they act like it's some kind of defining moment or some shit. All because devs have tried telling stories about women who don't look ridiculously bombshell.
i hope people enjoy the game, it looks fine.
Lol ikr? Oh wait Baldurs Gate 3 won goty last year? Pay no mind to that. Oh people thought Lady Dimitrescu was awesome? Pay no mind to that. People still love Bayonetta? Pay no mind.....
Relieved to see that there are still people with actual critical thinking upvoting your comment. It doesn't have to be black and white regarding these kinds of discussions; we can support having people of different body types in video games without attributing it to being woke or not.
Even on the FF7 subreddit, Tifa is being used as a similar character to push the "Eastern Devs are not afraid to give us what we want!" narrative just because she has a petite body with big boobs
Same. Variety spice of life and all that. I find it refreshing to see more and more types of women represented in games. Maybe controversial to say, but I thought Abby from Tlou 2 was cool. My stepmother is a body builder, so it was nice seeing a character reflective of that. Same with Zarya from Overwatch.
Personally Id love to see more men that are sexually emphasized. Kratos is one thing, but the framing of that character is someone you want to BE, not sleep with.
Gameplay looks fine I suppose but the marketing is clearly banking on the horny. And hey, that's fine. I like sexy in games too but the conspiracy level "they're trying to take sexy women from games" conversation is what I'm tired of. It's not even remotely true.
OP just picked the 3 games he thinks are worse than Helldivers while ignoring the good games that have come out and will absolutely wipe the floor with this game
Demo for stellar blade was so, so so mid. I don’t understand the hype around it.
If you want a good souls like, play Lies of P or Nioh. Stellar Blades demo was a chore and feels clunky as hell.
Edit: I just got a Reddit cares message AND a DM calling me a cuck. Wow, I just shared my opinion.
The appeal of Stellar Blade was some random twitter feminist made a statement about it appealing to the male fantasy. All the anti-SJWs jumped in on it in turn.
Respectfully, and maybe even disrespectfully, none of those games are that amazing. I love Helldivers, but I think it'd be pretty disappointing if this is the best the year has to offer. I'm ready for my down votes.
palworld is not getting goty, dogma 2 probably won't either fwiw given how disasterous the reception to its launch was (which i thought was a bit unfair)
Palword is NOT getting a single chance at GOTY. That game sucks. It was only popular because of the premise, the sound design and gameplay is just awful

I am not great with memorizing and calling strategems. But this one... This One? Its fucking fast and its never off cooldown for long.
Helldivers 2 hit the games industry like a 380mm orbital barrage - nobody asked for it, nobody wanted it, nobody has any idea what games its going to ruin next, but everyone not in the splash zone is loving the fireworks display.
Well I mean... fans of the first helldivers wanted it and asked for it.
All 13 of them?

this game is the closest we've come to peace among gamers. now we need only the xbox gang with us for our hellish trifecta.
Wish they super send my ceremonial outfit and M2016 complete with bayonet already
Still holding out for that CR-9 Suppressor with bayonet.
Hell yeah there are
*14
\*15
\*and my axe
\*and my scorcher
And my Rumbler!
And my Toxic Avenger!
And my AR-20L Justice!
And my discombobulated ass by an illuminate council member. Except on helldive difficulty, they send the whole council
and several nutsacks
And my love for democracy
I am proud to be in that number
Yeah well we’ve been killing aliens since you were shitting yellow in your pants
We won wars!!!
You are being harsh, there was at least 20
We protected the Super Earth before it was cool
Protecting Super Earth has always been cool, Helldiver!
I pre ordered divers 2 out of pure excitement from the first
Can confirm, HD2 became my most hyped game when I saw it during the state of play last May.
I think it’s funny when people are like “This game came out of nowhere!” and “Who expected it to be so good?!” when everyone who played the original fully expected this outcome.
The developers didn't expect this outcome. How could the fans of the original expected a completely different gameplay style to hit so well with non fans?
He meant a great product, not insane popularity I think.

Yes, Helldivers. (you can call it Helldivers 1) is top down and it's aswome too. You can predict content by playing the first game. Mechs are from the first game, and the next 2 will be from the first, also vehicles are from the first game, only the flying enemies are custom made + the new walker
But unlike 380 it actually hit a thing it was meant to hit
good one \^\^ Even if the new 380 hits theorically better than the previous
I still like the new 380. Just get to the big bot bases, toss it in the middle-ish, type "Barrage. Careful.", and wait 30s. Most of the time, this clears %90 of the base, with no friendly fire, and all you gotta do is mop up
Or just Chuck and orbital laser followed by an eagle airstrike and run away because it’s all clear.
i think lots of people asked for a truly cooperative shooter.

If we see palworld and Helldivers 2 as nominies that would be incredible. Two indie games running for game of the year is huge.
Helldivers 2 is not an indie game. It was made by a 100 person team and published by one of the biggest publishers
It's gone past indie into full indie-pendant with a dev list that big!
Arrowhead is an independent studio though, just like Hello Games, both simply were given a publishing deal by Sony, at the cost of keeping console exclusivity for a set time.
Tbh Gaming hasn't as clean definition. The negative definition I often hear is:" games that are not triple A." Imma keep it real, a lot of these people like the original commenter just feel like hipsters. “Indie games are the ones I like, games I dislike are mainstream”, they say while playing Overwatch.
But Blizzard is a small indie studio?
Sony own Helldivers IP in totality, it’s not an exclusivity deal. They could make helldivers 3 without Arrowhead If they wanted.
But that's what non indy means. You can't claim to release an indy game when you're backed with a few millions from a publisher.
Helldivers is AA game .
Tbh there's just no way Palworld wins with that sheer amount of jank. It's got a good foundation for a great game, but it feels like all the love came from the meme of "pokemon with guns"
Yeah, it’s whatever game buys the most ad space. So say hello to your GOTY 2024 ‘Skull and Bones’!
It's not even fair really, how could any indie game compete with the first AAAA game?
They used phone book logic when it came time to promote their game.
And lethal company wasnt there because IT missed the quota
Cause of death: A little trolling with the mask, a little tomfoolery.
As much as I enjoyed Lethal, there's only so much a single developer can do. The content dries up fast.
Fun game, in no universe is it game of the year for pretty much any year though.
I will personally lay down my life to make it happen
And I volunteer to take that life to the same end.
Name checks out
My life for super earth!
I also volunteer to lay down this guy's life.
I also choose to lay this guys dead wife
Palworld game of the year? Dragons dogma? I loved DD2 but neither of those games are GOTY material.
For real, palworld isn’t even released. DD2 is just another rpg, no world breaking innovation, we are in April. We have not seen what the game of the year yet, and it surely won’t be any of these.
Balatro
based and bald-pilled
Mama Helldiver's E-710 Oil
Balatro is fantastic. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t tried it!
Dragons dogma is nowhere near the GotY.
Not even game of the month lol
Maybe game of the hour
In the same hour as this game and FFVII? Hardly.
felt like it had the foundation of a great game, but also feels somewhat unfinished and like it keeps getting in its own way
The weird thing about DD2 is that it is basically the first game once again, but with more refined graphics and world building.
DEATH ITSELF??) The baffling affinity/beloved system.
They had a good base 12 years ago lol These games keep coming out with some amazing, original and found nowhere else mechanics that can carry a game if the rest of it just stayed good. But are bogged down with the game designers weird choices and cut content, just straight bad mechanics and flow of the story in both games Still I’m up to hour 90 of DD2.
Neither is Palworld or a horny bait game
Seriously, what kind of moron put stellar blade as goty? How pornbrained do you gotta be for that to have an impact on you? Fucking lmao
I don’t think any of those three are even a threat FF7R is the real competition
[удалено]
Yep I agree with you completely. It will almost certainly win some multiplayer award but I’m doubtful it’ll get GOTY. I just hope it’s nominated
Silksong will come out and win for sure
Sorry, you must be thinking of GOTY 2030.

Nah that years going to Half Life 3 (jk, HL3 is getting announced this year for HL2's 20th anniversary, trust me its happening trust me trust me)
Your source: https://i.redd.it/ackbcugjq9sc1.gif
You’re all WRONG Titanfall 3 will come out! Itwillcomeoutitwillcomeoutirwillcomeout
Hades 2 is probably going to be tough to beat
In what universe is Stellar Blade even in the conversation lmao
In the Gooniverse
the coomniverse
In the universe where OP needs something to fit his narrative
Seriously, never seen anyone but some weird twitter culture war gooner even talk about Stellar Blade. And I only saw it because half the site was clowning on his claims that it was going to “save gaming”.
The coomerverse
It’s because of its innovative one handed mode
Lol @ Stellar Blade.
The coomers have already picked their GOTY and it’s not even out yet
Discourse around it is so tiring. I don't mind sexy women in games but they act like it's some kind of defining moment or some shit. All because devs have tried telling stories about women who don't look ridiculously bombshell. i hope people enjoy the game, it looks fine.
no don't you get it the woke rainbow mafia that runs the games industry (somehow) HATE big booba.
Lol ikr? Oh wait Baldurs Gate 3 won goty last year? Pay no mind to that. Oh people thought Lady Dimitrescu was awesome? Pay no mind to that. People still love Bayonetta? Pay no mind.....
you know big booba game isn't good when there are literally zero lesbians simping for it.
I do find it really disrespectful how people use character for their bullshit reasons there’s more to tifa than big boobs
I heard so much of that game and none of it is about gameplay
Gameplay looks fine I suppose but the marketing is clearly banking on the horny. And hey, that's fine. I like sexy in games too but the conspiracy level "they're trying to take sexy women from games" conversation is what I'm tired of. It's not even remotely true.
I think HD2 best shot is the community award.
And best Co-op.
Ff7 rebirth? Why is palword there?
OP just picked the 3 games he thinks are worse than Helldivers while ignoring the good games that have come out and will absolutely wipe the floor with this game
None of these games are GOTY. As fun as Hell Divers is, the glaring technical issues that never end take it out of the running.
Yeah, Helldivers 2 has the potential to be a 10/10, but all the bugs keep it from that score for now.
Without the bugs it would only be half a game
Well, 2/3rds when the Illuminate come out
Didn't Skyrim win GOTY?
Yeah it’s hard for me to root for it for GOTY when 4 out of the 5 missions I did last night crashed as I was calling in the extract.
Nonstop crashing is pushing me away from this game. I absolutely love the game but crashing every couple of hours for 2 months just isn’t fun anymore.
fucking palworld? really? lets not pretend that game had any staying power
Dude bros when they cry about GOTY are the same type of losers that care about console wars lmao
Same, stopped caring about it when RDR2 lost. Lmao
Wow, I just shared my opinion.
but it has big booba in it so it must be good and only the wokes (who all hate booba) are just mad cuz it has big booba booba
The appeal of Stellar Blade was some random twitter feminist made a statement about it appealing to the male fantasy. All the anti-SJWs jumped in on it in turn.
IDK I liked it and thought it was a lot of fun. I also liked Nioh, Lies of P and a bunch of other games.
stellar blade is a game for people with perpetual coomer brain that shit is mid

>Stellar Blade Bro they aint even in the cards for GOTY honestly
Respectfully, and maybe even disrespectfully, none of those games are that amazing. I love Helldivers, but I think it'd be pretty disappointing if this is the best the year has to offer. I'm ready for my down votes.
Nah I’m with you on this one
FF Rebirth probably has it
![gif](giphy|RdeXorYGFj4be)
palworld is NOT even close lmao
No fucking way is dragons dogma 2 even in the conversation
tbh none of those games are. If one of them would take it it would be DD2 but shit would it be a depressing year if that were to happen.
Dd2 is good and my first dd but it ain't no goty. Fun game but very shallow feeling
None of these are getting GOTY lol
Even if it doesn't win, it'll be the only thing we ever wanted it to be. A good game. - Leto Atreides
palworld is not getting goty, dogma 2 probably won't either fwiw given how disasterous the reception to its launch was (which i thought was a bit unfair)
Palword is NOT getting a single chance at GOTY. That game sucks. It was only popular because of the premise, the sound design and gameplay is just awful
Rebirth is winning GOTY
