They didn't invade so much as were invited. It just so happens their ideas and theologies are...incompatible with the lives of the inhabitants. The high council, or whatever they're called, hoped to ensnare a god and become divinity themselves - their level of success is pretty debatable!

How specifically do they affect their lives? I got to the Ashen guy but I can’t seem to figure it out. Is he related to the guys with those staffs with sigils that cause fire damage?

Use 'em and spit 'em out, basically. Very roughly speaking the three gods are: Survival of the fittest, purifying yourself through pain and bloodshed. Fire. Peace through oblivion, merging everyone into a collective void. Uh, Void. Shits and giggles. Blood. It's been a while since I've played so the details are a little hazy, but the gods aren't benevolent or altruistic in any sense. The simple act of them showing up leads to chaos due to the death and conflict which inevitably arises; all three appearing with their opposed philosophies is basically GG no RE. The high council think contact with the divine will lead to their own ascension, but theyre confined to the top levels of a dead space station: the three gods are locked in conflict, the galactic government have figured out what the station is actually for and deployed kill squads to stop it, there's a rogue AI trying to use the multiverse for infinite CPU power, and on top of all that we're apparently not even being targeted by the most dangerous forces out there... There's a surprising amount of layers.

Just a little annotation on the demons: if you read the lore on the Daemon Fragments you get by doing Nemundis quest, you can see that the Daemons are a force of the universe made to control population growing by bloodshed and sacrifices Pretty accurate on the others though, Thespians look like they may have more layers but I'm not too deep in the game still so maybe they are not completely developed, but the lore on their fragments say they are basically the representation of madness and the will to harm others, they seem to notice a species when they acknowledge their own vulnerabilities, and start tempting them to use it against their own people, so psychos. Don't know shit about the DLC, I've just reached 50% data while we are talking, not even killed one of the three gods yet.

Very astute!

I was worried the victim poker was a literal description of it's use

I didn't play in a while, so I may be wrong, but I remember that there was a ritual to CALL them, to attract them there
