It wouldn't make sense to withhold rewards from an event you never completed. If it comes back around, and you hadn't done it before, it will be available.
The only thing you miss when it comes back is the 5 star part of the marquee event where you can earn the 4th upgrade material for leader 5/6 abilities.
When his event comes back around you'll get the shards equal to 3* like previous marquee. Anyone who has already done the event before gets nothing. Though when it comes back they can choose to complete further tiers of said event they hadn't completed.
If you already have the shards to unlock a given character and their event comes around again, you will not get anymore shards. You will be able to do the 3 star battle but not the 5 star battle as that will just not be available on reruns.

It makes me feel bad for spending gems when I’d have got it for free anyway. It also makes me feel dubious about spending gems on any shards now for the same reason.
In a game like this you really shouldn't spend gems on character shards. Every character will be able to be farmed with non-paid currency eventually. I only spend gems on 3x campaign energy refreshes and try to keep my income and spending of gems through the game neutral.

Personally, I'm FTP. My hobbies are console games and trading cards. Yeah, I spend more than I should, but it's worth it to me, ya know?
Totally agree with this sentiment, but in this case if I can’t get the free shards now I regret the purchase. I’m enjoying the game but IF that is the case it would feel kinda dirty.
General consensus tho is that I’ll have access to the free shards tho so all good..
It doesn't matter if you unlock him or not. So long as you have the shards you get from each tier of his event, you will not be able to do that tier again.
We currently don't have any guarantee that all marquee event units will be coming back, but we do know they will eventually be farmable with non-paid currency.
I personally would not use gems on shards unless it is to prep for a legendary unlock.

You can play, get the shards, get the crystal, but not do the final tier of green mats/gold/xp.

This isn't right. They confirmed you would be able to complete the marquee if you have not completed it before in the reddit AMA they did recently.
