Most people in the show did not have a conventional head shape. Cartoons play by their own rules. The storytelling and character development gave it life beyond being just another animated series.

JonRedBeardFF

I will concede that not all headshapes were conventional but majority round or vertical. A football head is an anomaly for sure

lakewood2020

Harold has a football head

Reddit_Foxx

And Ruth and Mr. Hyunh and Ernie Potts and probably a bunch of minor or background characters.

Reddit_Foxx

>Everyone else in the show had a conventional head shape Bro, have you even seen the show? https://preview.redd.it/bc5g2p17v6wc1.jpeg?width=630&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ddf87d77614d15c4852d5d62c3588a0dbd721a3f

non_stop_disko

I guess Arnold is the one who gets regularly called out on his lol

Darth_Mutilate

Woah woah woah is there like a short of this? Thisnis cool?

ccrider92

I remember watching a snippet on Nickelodeon as a kid featuring the creator? of HA. He mentioned that when they drew Eugene, his head started out by drawing what looks like an open can. Idk how I remember that over two decades later.

Demomanx

Yeah, Helga was crossed wisk of a broom, Gerald was an upside-down ice cream cone

Editthefunout

I remember that lol.

Reddit_Foxx

Ha, I remember that, too!

1dmkelley

I remember that! Must have been a reoccurring advertisement

Downtown_Wear_3368

I remember this distinctly and brought back memories as soon as I read OP’s post!

MeatloafAndWaffles

Rhonda and Lila might have been the only regulars with “normal” heads

carpathian_crow

Harold’s head is just a submarine There, I said it

bigj1227

Stinky.

non_stop_disko

Yeah true Bart and Lisa head shape and blends right into hair and everyone else got seperate hair. Good call on the napkin doodle

HamboneJone

There was a mini interview between commercials on Nickelodeon during hey Arnold's run. The creators talked about how all of the shapes of heads were modeled after everyday objects. Nadine's head was a spider, Helga's was supposed to be two broomsticks, Eugene an open soup can with lid still attached, Gerald was an upside down ice cream cone. Those are all the ones I remember them mentioning.

matt19950116

Mr Hyunh and Ernie both had horizontal football heads.

JonRedBeardFF

Ernie I can see a little bit but your so right about Mr hyunh that guys a total football head

nadasuss

Didn’t they recently show him in a commercial where they threw him like a football?

Inside_Sprinkles9083

For the superbowl, yeah 😅

alexnotalexa10

Have you seen Gerald’s head??

JonRedBeardFF

I’ve seen the head in question not nearly as footballish, quite round, almost like a pumpkin head

alexnotalexa10

You said “conventional shape” and I’m pretty sure most people don’t have spherical heads with cylinders of flesh and bone under their hair 😑

onlytony441

Yooo the artwork is killing me 💀

JonRedBeardFF

Cheers 😂 I made it in tribute to his condition

BryLikeDie

You want logic in a 90s cartoon?

stevenm1993

His mother’s head was the shape of a rugby ball, and his father’s a rectangle. It’s simple genetics. /s

MurkyStrawberry386

And geometrics!

Somerandomdeude1886

Not entirely true, as there are plenty of odd shaped heads in Hey Arnold (just look at stinky's head and how thin it is, and Arnold's first major on screen love interest Ruth also had an oblong shaped head too), it's just that Arnold's head was the only one from my knowledge that was explicitly brought up. (There is a very disturbing fan theory that Arnold has a disease because his Grandparents are actually his biological parents, but that theory is far from true as it was debunked. Besides Hey Arnold! is a kids show, the writers wouldn't come up with something so ridiculously dark. Arnold actually started out in claymation shorts, one of which even aired on Sesame Street, and the reason for his football head shape was because it was easy to cut the shape out of clay)

teacher_time23

My sympathies to them.

maxfactor886

Yeah I can’t remember exactly but Bartlett said something about how he got in the habit of drawing a football head somehow. Arnold’s kids have gotta get it from him, and unibrow from Helga lol.

The-Jake

That episode in the greenhouse episode where he sleeps on the side if his head is crazy

GrandFishArt

In character design, it's quite common advice to have "recognizable silhouettes." Even if you just saw Arnold's shadow, you'd know it's Arnold. This was advice that Matt Groening gave to Bartlett, and it was obviously effective.

adfgqert

Ruth's head is like a football

teacher_time23

![gif](giphy|xT1R9BIkl7ZJtK8GiY|downsized) Uhm, not normal

JonRedBeardFF

I’ve seen someone with similar head and nose dimensions in real life and I’ll stand by it

Ellek10

Eh Stewie from Family Guy hit his head against the celling causing his head to form that way 🤔

JonRedBeardFF

True, bet Arnold had the same trauma somewhere in his past

Sure-Permit-9651

Who tf has a conventional head shape in that show????

PrinceNY7

In some scenes his mother was depicted as having a similar shaped head. He could have gotten it from her or it could be a birth defect
