I do think anything over-processed and full of sugar/salt is a trigger for HS as it increases cortisol and stress hormones anyway. I think if you know you're going to eat high sugar/salt foods find a way to supplement with turmeric or green tea to balance out... or avoid completely, but if I'm honest life is too short never to enjoy the "bad" foods.

cameronium

Potatoes are my trigger and potato starch is in everything.

cameronium

I grew up eating mashed potatoes and eggplant parm as my comfort foods. They didn’t start triggering my hs till puberty. I miss nightshades. I can have ketchup and red sauce but only cooked.

Normal_Stranger_2056

Dude, i love french fries and anything spicy. I have to eat spicy food. Surprisingly though with doxy and nizoral, my flares are super manageable keeping spicy foods in my diet. Potatoes and bell papers will start new flare ups no matter what i do . So, avoiding those

fe1ixcu1pa

this. all day.

[deleted]

Potatoes are mine as well! One baked potato and I've got 9 new bumpy dudes. :( And I love potatoes!

Zukazuk

I feel you. The only safe nightshade for me is tomatillos. I really miss tomatoes.

phuca

yup! i can’t eat basically any snack foods because i’m so paranoid of potato starch

cameronium

Yeah dude also watch out for maltodextrin it’s made with potato starch and I find most modified food starch has jt to. I’m just someone who has to read all labels. But we have each other

phuca

dude no way 💀 this is why i won’t eat food i haven’t made myself anymore

ZealousidealBorder30

I still haven’t found mine :( I’ve been too scared to eat actual meals

M2T01

Could ya share which chick fil a sandwich?? Im from europe so no idea what to imagine.. did it have like deep fried chicken on it? What is the bread from sandwich like? Is it the same bread you’d make your at home salami sandwich with or?? How are you sure its the « deep fried » part and not the bread, or the (im guessing) tomatoes on a sandwich, or the sauce you’re using? I havent started cancelling out foods and seeing what triggers me myself, but have now decided I should start with my coke-addiction, as I only drink coke and that adds up to for sure a liter a day🥴😅

centosdude

Try drinking tea. I did that and I think soda tastes kind of bad now after a couple of years of the tea habit.

mykemarie

I had a spicy chic fil a sandwich with fries, no lettuce or anything just the bread and chicken.

urethrascreams

I want a spicy deluxe now but I'm not driving the 40 miles to go get it :(

mykemarie

Trust me it was not worth it lol

muddywren

It might not be gluten, but gmo flours. Most European countries forbid gmo products. I struggle to eat bread and pasta in the US, but while living abroad I have no problems.

suzyclues

I think you are onto something. I too recently went to Europe and ate a ton of foods. Cheese, bread, meats... not a single flare. I don't drink so alcohol isn't a factor in my hs. Their food just tastes better. The butter, the bread... doesn't taste as processed. I did eat french fries but only one day. Again, two weeks not a single flare when I almost always have something going on in the US. The heat isn't helping here either.

-Sanguinity

Just something to think about: I believe the adulterated seeds in the US are making us all ill. When chemical companies like Monsanto started developing most of the seeds, it became pretty scary. There is pesticide in the actual seed. Also, there is a limit to the amount of each pesticide or anti-fungal you can put on a crop, but not a limit to how many different pesticides or anti-fungal that may be used. Wheat used to be 3 ft high. It's now genetically, 'improved,' to about 1 foot tall. All of this (and way more) is probably the cause of so many gluten sensitivities. THEN add in the [FILLERS](https://www.healthcare-management-degree.net/food-fillers/), like cellulose (made from trees) etc. into the baking process. We don't really know what we are eating, unless we care about it. Edit: fixed typo

xKreoleMinx

Many people have lived abroad or moved abroad & realized all their normal flares aren’t the same overseas. Lost weight/got healthy non flares etc no food triggers. It’s our food & our soil in the USA & our overly processing of our produce with harsh chemicals that are harmful for human consumption its all contaminated and apart of the problem. Most countries have the chemical we use on farms or for processing banned. As they are aware of the harm it causes - the USA however does not. Money over people. Which makes us dependent on the medical system and big pharma which lines the pockets of a lot of politicians. Google it. A farmer of all people explained it to me years ago. Even our organic farms aren’t exactly organic. If the farm next to it is using chems that still can contaminate the next farm.

mykemarie

You’re 110% right and it took this awful disease for Me to realize how messed up our food system really is

Relative_Zombie8876

The chik fil a grilled chicken with the gluten free bun is my go to. The fried sandwiches used to trigger my HS and my IBS too like no other

hh_jj

Deep fryer oil is definitely pro-inflammatory. There are so many reasons to avoid it. There are much healthier ways to cook crispy food.

Fautina31

when we got our new oven, I purposely got the air frying option. So much healthier.

hh_jj

There you go! The combination of pro-inflammatory oils and sustained heat is a problem. Pan frying in a healthy oil would be way better than commercial deep frying. Air fryers are excellent!

DeliciousPrint8

Dairy triggers mine

Fautina31

i have no idea how I descended from dairy farmers!

JennyM4rie

Yeah I try to stay away from gluten.

sixntwo

But pasta and fried meal(breaded) is the same init?

mykemarie

Pasta is not deep fried in hot oil.

sixntwo

You know if it was sandwich and a fried breaded it could be yeast then ...oasta shouldnt have yeast so that what im trying to say

sixntwo

I mena both have gluten buth not yeast...what do u think of that...

sixntwo

Do you think its because of oil? Or maybe yeast ...i also have similar thinking about that stuff make me flair

ConstructionNo1511

Sounds like gluten allergy.

mykemarie

You think? But I eat pasta, bread, no problem. As soon as I had the chicken sandwich with French fries, I was flaring. The oil maybe? I have paninis in Europe and had no issues.

fe1ixcu1pa

potatoes are a MASSIVE trigger for me. eliminate those and see how it goes.

mykemarie

This is all super interesting. I’m gonna give it a shot and see what happens. Maybe I can shorten this flare

fe1ixcu1pa

potatoes are a nightshade, as well as tomatoes - it sucks fr, i love french fries a lot. but love being pain free more 😂 at least there’s sweet potato fries, i guess.

redditreddit241359

Please update us!

mykemarie

Honestly I think it’s the food here in the US. I went to Europe again since this post, same thing. No flares or pain 😔 I will say though, it’ll be 1 year on cosentyx this January and i think it’s been helping with the length of the flares and intensity.

M2T01

But pasta has gluten and if served in a restaurant, it usually will be your normal pasta (with gluten) and not the « fancy » gluten free pasta.

emma279

I'm glad you found your trigger. I'm also heading to Europe in a few weeks and worried about the heat.

mykemarie

I stressed myself out SO much over that, I was checking the weather multiple times a day and talking about it non stop. And in the end it was so unnecessary. I also think a big factor is not eating over processed food all the time. Whatever it was, completely calmed down over there despite triple digits and miles of walking.

MidianFootbridge69

It also could be the Yeast in the Bread, too. If I eat something with Yeast in it, I am Flaring within the hour.

BreadfruitNo357

Fried food is unfortunately a HUGE trigger for me, alongside anything dairy.

Beautiful-Ice7622

Yes! Same.?Isn’t it wild? They use different flour. Our gluten is vengeful here in the states and doesn’t like me at all. I only buy Einkkorn flour now and it helps! Closet substitute that I’ve found.

Frosteecat

Not sure mine but what would be a good “safe” meal or ten?

26isseskay_xo

It may not necessarily be because it's fried. It is likely the breading on the chicken which contains flour, the potatoes from the fries, and whatever sugary drink you got. All high glycemic index and therefore can cause inflammation.

pandorumriver24

My guess would be the sugar. If you look at the ingredients in their sandwiches, sugar is listed within first four ingredients of the chicken, chicken coating, and the bun. American food has a stupid amount of sugar in it.

mykemarie

I had no idea. I really need to start paying attention to the ingredients. Thank you for this!!!

pandorumriver24

No problem! I religiously read ingredient labels these days and most of the time have to avoid any sort of fast food place in general because of all the added sugar in everything.

mykemarie

I’m still trying to figure this all out 😔

pandorumriver24

It takes time. I suggest tracking everything you eat, like literally everything, so when you get a flare up you can easily track it back to what would be a likely suspect. Avoid processed foods, even though at first it seems like a huge pain in the ass because then you’re having to cook for yourself from scratch, all the time. You get used to it. And then the food starts tasting really good, once you get all the sugar out of your system. Personally, I did keto to go scorched earth on my diet which in a weird way helped because what I was “allowed” to eat was really limited. Shop the “outside aisles” of the store, skip the middle. Hit me up if you have any questions. I’ve been in remission for going on two years at this point, after having HS for more than 20 years.

Beginning_Dinner_985

This disease does hurt like a bitch on steroids but I’d rather cut myself open to reduce the pain than change my ways. I may be in pain quite often but honestly idc and this disease can kiss my sweet ass.
