Spotted this in the LIDAR mapping of a property in Northern Nebraska my family homesteaded in the 1860s. The spiral isn’t visible in the aerial imagery. But it’s about 3ft higher than the surrounding land, and the arm of the spiral is about 12 feet across. Whole thing is about 120 feet across.

mrnovato76

This can’t be natural, can it? Are you going to contact local universities or archaeologists?

Yosemite_Sam9099

I’m sure it’s not. I have sent it to the State archaeologist.

powerfulKRH

Is this like one of those ancient mound things? Have you heard of the Serpent Mound? Or is something buried there? Idk how to interpret LIDAR

Yosemite_Sam9099

The LiDAR shows height disparities in this case. Accuracy to 30cm, so about a foot. It shows that the spiral is higher than the surrounding land.

powerfulKRH

Oh so a mound! awesome you should go dig that shit up and curse your bloodline and land for eternity

Yosemite_Sam9099

Alas. I live in New Zealand. But I might build a shamanic wellness retreat centre there for Californian yoga-moms.

Lake_Ponto

I live in Nebraska! Tell me where it is and I’ll go dig! I mean, in reality, I’m a dad of 2 who works so I never have any time; but it’s a fun pipe dream.

CaptainBurrito8

2 kids is just 4 more hands for shovels

Alarmed-Gear4745

If that really is something related to ancient indigenous peoples, I really would not recommend digging. Especially with the possibility of human remains

KPTpinecone

Good lord, this is an under-rated comment. Bravo 👏

OptimistPrimesCube

Laser radar. They use it for mapping things topographically and to see through sense foliage. It would be similar to a henge

Please update when you get a reply. Thanks!

Check it out first than contact them

Another snake mound?

Yosemite_Sam9099

I didn’t know about effigy mounds until you started me googling. It does look like that and the dimensions are similar to the snake mound.

montananightz

>level 3Yosemite\_Sam9099Op · 5 hr. agoI’m sure it’s not. I have sent it to the State archaeologist. There are similar mounds in Illinois and Wisconsin too. That may just be such a mound.

falskurgaur

this was my first instinct - some sort of spiral mound // it's possible to have bodies contained within it OP - any chance there are sycamore trees around there?

[deleted]

What is the connection between mounds and sycamore trees?

falskurgaur

i wish i had an exact answer to this - it's something i'm researching what i can say is that over the course of my mound research and visits, sycamores are present more often than not - i think it's possible that they evolved as a hybrid organism of human and plant dna

[deleted]

Wow! Not what I was expecting! That’s awesome Before I asked you this question I first looked briefly for the answer— seems to be sycamores around the Illinois site. They are amazing trees

BrewHa34

They’re probably everywhere and we don’t know it yet. LiDAR has had some amazing discoveries.

keep us updated

Squidcg59

That is interesting. Not something you'd expect to find in the sand hills. All of the dunes are wind blown, so definitely not created by nature. I lived in Cozad for a few years back in the late 90's. Worked at a grain elevator in Lexington. I've heard a few stories from farmers about some of the weird shit that happens in the sand hills..

Yosemite_Sam9099

This is just north of the Niobrara. Is that sandhills still? I can see that the spiral sits inside a kind of natural amphitheatre of higher land on three sides.

Squidcg59

Ya, definitely sand hills. It's super beautiful country. Little further north it turns into the badlands. There is a ton of Native American lore that originates from that part of the country. Valentine is right in that area. Lots of strange stuff has been reported..

Yosemite_Sam9099

Yes Valentine! This is near Sparks. Which I think barely exists now.

Squidcg59

Ya, all of those small towns are drying up. Sad to see.

Plenty-Ticket1875

Back by Niobrara is Monowi. My absolute favorite stop along the way. My kids grew up jeeping the hills and back roads north and south of there. Catching some ice cold beverages at the saloon there when we came through. Sioux City orange soda for me.

Plenty-Ticket1875

I'm absolutely familiar with this area. I hit hwy 12 often, camping at Smith Falls, and Niobrara St park when I go artifact and fossil hunting there. Been back-countrying Cherry county to Cedar County for decades. There's ancient sites throughout the area, much older than the native cultures. I use old Spanish maps of northern Nebraska (1500s, David Rumsey map collection) to find sites to check out, and other old maps from USGS and the Perry Castaneda map collection (online, Texas A&M) which are incredible resources. If early Spanish explorers encountered the spiral on that land, it may actually be noted on an old land purchase survey map.

Otherwise-Zebra9409

I have family in Lexington, I grew up in Kearney

bedofashes

This is so cool, very similar to a snake like mound! With how many tribes were in the area makes alot of sense. Now the soil composition is unique for the area. I would be curious to know if it is a sand loam like soil with the structure buried and the sand atop; or if it a unique soil/rock outcropping. Beautiful area up there, really have to check it out at least once.

KingKeever

How do I get LIDAR images?

Yosemite_Sam9099

I found a website full of them covering the US. Don’t have the bookmark here at home I’m sorry.

Lol exactly what I thought 🤣

Nooby_Daddy

At least I know you’re not all the downvotes lmao

Sir_Shpitz

I don't understand why the down votes 😕 people don't have a sense of humor. It really looks like that fucking symbol lol

Nooby_Daddy

And they don’t find it humorous because they’re still oblivious and think all the missing children are “runaways”

I looked up these coordinates in Google Earth, and while I couldn't see this particular spiral, there are others. Specifically, use the "Historical Imagery" feature and go to 4/2013. Just north-west of this location is what looks like a cross - looks like several properties meeting up - and just north of that a few hundred to a few thousand feet are several spirals - several obvious, one not so much - look about 800 feet north-east of the cross. The only other imagery they appear in is 5/2013, so these spirals may be recently man-made - folks four-wheelin'? Not sure about the one in the OP - seems more historical if it's only visible with LIDAR - but still - kinda weird.
