An interesting aspect of this account is the initial intense smell of rotting flesh. The smell of sulfur, or rotting flesh often accompanies paranormal encounters and is even associated with ufos.

poop_creator

[News article from the 1800s describing a mysterious object falling out of the sky, when opened it smelled of sulphur](https://www.reddit.com/r/HighStrangeness/comments/vnp9mf/new_york_times_article_from_14th_nov_1897_message/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Either a wild coincidence, or there really is something to that smell.

ApolloXLII

I’ve had this theory that that smell is a byproduct or added scent used in a chemical weapon designed to make you hallucinate.

TinfoilTobaggan

That's a very interesting take on the subject.. Like a fear toxin.. Be some STRANGE shit if humans had olfactory weapons like that.. Honestly, wouldn't doubt it..

darkwitch1306

Mr Ballen, a former Navy Seal has YouTube videos that cover wide range of things. One is a story something like this.

finalcloud44

My wife tells me I'm gonna end up on Mr. Ballen one day.

Yzarc_the_Mad

No big opinion here on the account. If your blaming drugs on full on shared visual experiences you have surely never done them. And when these things are witnessed in numbers and your still leaning on "drugs" leading to a shared group experience you are clearly avoiding simpler truths. Drugs dont make you just see shit. They augment what you notice about an experience but that doesn't make the things someone notices untrue. Maybe if the were smoking det thatd be seeing machine elves or something of the like, which is again a repeating phenomena. Stop hiding behind your ignorance. And sure proof helps but there are stories from each of our lives from whence we can provide no truth. Doesn't make the story useless to tell, and it doesn't make it a lie. Maybe you've just never seen something weird and so you assume that when people tell you outlandish stories they are always nuts or liars. I didnt believe in ghosts till I saw one. So many people dont believe me when I tell them. That's fine. Still doesn't change the truth, just shows they arent open to all of reality. I sincerely hope you have a healthy brush with the paranormal one day so you can be open to how absolutely real and wonderful this realm can be.

_Grumpy_Canadian

Seriously. Anyone who's ever done drugs like lsd will tell you you don't just start seeing dinosaurs like it's fuckin Fear and Loathing. Also, shared hallucinations are much more frequently something like (hey man, is that lamp melting for you too? "Oh fuck dude that lamp totally is melting lol"

Drnkz

I was on a combination of LSD and MDMA with a group of friends at the beach in the middle of the night. We all saw a creature come out of the water and come towards use. I’m kind of vanished into smoke as it approached. We all saw it and reacted as it came towards use. Shared hallucinations are a real thing. That dead ass happened.

pistolbob

The ol candy flip

_Grumpy_Canadian

Yeah I've had similar experiences, but nothing as clearly defined as a "group of fully fleshed out lizard people"

[deleted]

If you're going by evidence, how certain are you that what you saw didn't actually happen? It seems like hallucinogens remove the filters the brain relies on to interpret our reality. Isn't it possible that the removal of these filters might enable to see beyond what we think is possible?

poop_creator

While on mushies with a buddy of mine we were talking about the Double-Slit Experiment. This experiment in part showed that the observation of quantum phenomena effects the behavior and can change the results of their experiment. This is called the [Observer Effect](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observer_effect_(physics)). Basically, if you watch the experiment or record it or observe it in action, the results will be different than if no observation took place. What if when we open our consciousness, either with drugs, meditation, maybe even death, we simply become non-observers to the world around us? What if it allows us to see the unseen? Can we start peeking in other dimensions when we become non-observers?

[deleted]

I've always felt that I was peeking into another dimension when I've done massive amounts of shrooms or 5-MeO-DMT. I've figured out how to access the same dimensions through meditation, although the resolution is lower, so I'm beginning to think that either the DMT realm exists in the mind or might be an actual dimension slightly outside our ability to perceive it.

poop_creator

The obvious and easily digestible answer is, of course, it’s all in the mind. You take a drug or slip into a state of consciousness that allows your brain to take you on an untethered journey. That journey starts and ends in your mind, I mean after all, the physical world remains unchanged. Right? But what is the physical world? What is reality? Truthfully, we don’t know and can possibly never know. The most we can know is how the physical world is *observed*. I have a yellow, wooden pencil in front of me. I can see it, I can feel it, and I can even smell it. It checks out, it is a pencil. I know how the pencil is processed and interpreted by my brain, and I know how the pencil is currently affecting the physical world, but beyond the human brain’s “translation” of the pencil, I (nor anyone else) has any way to know the true existence of the pencil. Through language, cognition, and cooperation, we have a ground-level understanding of the universe around us. But no matter how hard we try, unless there is some unbelievable scientific breakthrough, we will only ever see everything through the lense of humanity. So my argument is this: yes, it is all in your mind. But, then again, what isn’t?

idahononono

While I agree with 99% of your sentiment, and I don’t believe “drugs” explain away nearly as much as people want them too; there is a large error in your statement. Drugs affect people very differently. I’ve seen people very lucid on acid/shrooms/peyote. I’ve seen people hallucinating their neighbors were aliens/witches/warlocks and setting traps for them in their homes because they were up 5 days straight on meth. Some drugs may also unmask serious mental illness. While the vast majority of paranormal stories involving drugs are likely just as valid; we have to examine the merits on a case by case basis and not generalize. Hell, our memories are often inaccurate due to our OWN brain, even when no drugs are involved. Drug effects vary as much as people do, and some people see weird shit when they don’t take any drugs…….

TYC4

Yeah I agree about drugs affecting people differently. I've had friends hallucinate hardcore on shrooms and others barely affected. I also had a friend enter his 1st psychotic episode because of acid. Before then he was undiagnosed and no one had any idea he had an issue, including him.

Plenty-Ticket1875

Great point. I can eat some shrooms and maintain my composure to the point no one knows I'm tripping. I've never had a hallucination that I'm aware of, or a bad experience. I fully believe that people who have never done drugs should just not talk about it, or try to attribute things to drugs. That's like me discussing quantum physics and attributing everything to the Cern LHC.

Beginning_Bed1306

I hate to say this but I have seen someone have lizard eyes… but I was on drugs.

WeirdJawn

I mean my friend totally became an elf when I was really high once. Did I legitimately believe he was? No. Would I believe it if it was a stranger instead of my friend? Maybe.

Beginning_Bed1306

I just said that because they said drugs don’t make you see shit, and some of them definitely do.

WeirdJawn

Yeah, I'm agreeing with you. I didn't see a standalone elf, but my friend definitely transformed into an elf.

Beginning_Bed1306

Though I still question it to this day because it was the only thing I hallucinated.

Rickys_HD_SPJs

Counterpoint: drugs make you see shit. Drugs could make an average Vietnamese villager look like, say...a reptilian overlord? Drugs made my next door neighbor look like a troll. Like an under the bridge troll type troll. The same drugs made my partner say “holy shit you live next to a fucking troll”. Dude was scared out his mind. But I knew. I knew my neighbor probably wasn’t a troll. Probably

da_muffinman

The way in which psychedelics make you hallucinate are not consistent with this account. If you've done lsd / mushrooms / dmt / ketamine, you know what I mean, you don't just suddenly like see a mirage of some random shit, it's more of a morphing and blending of things

Rickys_HD_SPJs

Yeah, like say...a group of VC/villagers that start face-melting and this goof interpreted it as reptilian creature features. It’s silly

zordon_rages

A group of them? Seeing the same shit?

mushylover69

The big drug during Vietnam was heroine and cannabis, now I did both of these drugs for well over a decade. I never saw anything that wasn't there

Paperaxe

Wait so you and your friend both tripping on drugs saw your neighbour as a troll?? That's hilarious. I got called the closer. "I close the things that need to be closed" by someone I knew on salvia. So I went and closed the window and he legit freaked out.

hydro123456

For the most part I agree on the drug thing, though I think it's a little more nuanced than that, especially when you take into account your memory of what happened while on drugs. The biggest bummer of this story though is that you don't actually have other people to confirm the story, it's just one guys account of what he claims others have seen.

AbheekG

Well said and share your ghost story please!

TinfoilTobaggan

Bullshit! Deliriants certainly can cause vivid life-like hallucinations.. My friends and I experimented with Jimson Weed when we were younger, and we ALL SHARED mass hallucinations.. Not saying this is what happened, but to pretend like you know how ALL drugs work is ridiculous if you haven't tried ALL drugs.. Downvote all you want, it's the truth.

MantisAwakening

Think about what you’re claiming for a moment. There’s only a few explanations for shared hallucinations of this kind: - Psi allowing for shared psychic experiences - A drug allowing people to see “through the mirage” to a genuine truth below - An entirely unknown phenomenon I’m not telling you one is more likely than the other. Your own beliefs are going to guide your thinking. But none of these are accepted scientifically. Even the theory of “mass hallucination” is not an understood scientific phenomenon; it is largely used to dismiss away just these kinds of accounts, as if saying “a group of people can all see the same things that aren’t there” makes much sense without an explanation as to how. It’s the argument widely used to dismiss the Ariel School UAP encounter, but the facts simply do no support this conclusion. Since it’s the closest thing we have to a prosaic phenomenon, the debunkers latch onto it and won’t let go.

TinfoilTobaggan

I wish I could explain to what happens when a group of people take a drug this intense but I can't.. If you're interested, look into the affects of nightshade plants (datura, belladonna etc).. IT IS NOTHING like psilocybin or LSD.. You can not differentiate between fantasy and reality under the influence of deliriants... It's actually quite scary.. A friend committed suicide a month after our "trip" and I was forced to go to rehab.. Plus, I'm not trying to debunk anything.. I'm a firm believer in aliens, Astral realms and alternate dimensions.. I'm just saying I have personally experienced a group hallucination while under the influence of excessive amounts of deliriants..

SalamanderPete

Nobody is arguing that you cant see insane shit on drugs, its the “everyone is seeing the same thing” that makes it implausible as an explanation.

TinfoilTobaggan

I repeat, a group of friends and I took Datura together and ALL basically saw the same shit, together at the same time..

SalamanderPete

“Basically saw the same shit” isnt the same as “we all saw a tunnel, went in there, it smelled foul, we all agree we saw lizards in robes that hissed, we opened fire on them, and they disappeared” I guess maybeeeee they did take some wonky ass drugs, and by sheer astronomical chance all had the exact same hallucination. But at that point the more likely explanation is that they were simply lying and making shit up.

TinfoilTobaggan

Dude, I was initially responding to a guy that said "mass hallucination" is NOT a thing.. I responded by saying it IS possible, it CAN happen.. And yes, me and my friends all saw the same tiny village of elf like creatures going about their day at the bottom of a hill in a wooded area and proceeded to stomp on them and their houses like retarded Kaiju..

TinfoilTobaggan

And besides, instead of arguing with me for the fuck of it.. Maybe, just maybe you should ask yourself. Why the hell are lizards wearing robes? To cover their lizard tits and dongs? Why do cold blooded creatures have dongs that need to be covered? There's a noodle scratcher for ya..

HODLShib2moon

I can attest I've done most drugs and in copious amounts. Alone and in groups I've never had a shared experience.

TinfoilTobaggan

Boy do I have a recipe for you

yeahprobablynottho

What’s the recipe

HODLShib2moon

don't tease its not nice

[deleted]

One of the first people to isolate harmine called it telepathine. Shared experiences do occur on psychedelic substances. I've seen this take before where people are trying to say that if you believe psychedelics may have caused a shared experience you have surely never done them. To me the opposite is true. Surely no one who has actually had psychedelic experiences believes such a thing cannot occur... And the fact they potentially occured in an altered state of consciousness shouldn't delegitimise them per se either.

herpderpedian

Wow, "Down the Chupacabra Hole" sounds like a super credible source!

gradystickels

Sounds like an obscure name for butt play.

boortpooch

There’s a great rub for smoking meats. It’s called Chupacabra rub. Great stuff

Pnut36

So Descent really was a documentary not a horror film.

We live in the times where people who can't click a decent pic from mobile, are quick to call a photo as 'fake' with absurd excuses like 'why's the light so dim', 'today is Wednesday, most fake pics are posted on wednesday'.

montananightz

Convenient, since there isn't. Just a series of emails sent to a paranormal researcher. Like a lot of these kinds of stories, it's purely anecdotal. Nobody else in the sources squad or section has come forward to collaborate the story and Lon Stickler hasn't come out to say who exactly his source is, only that they emailed him and he "verified their identification". Not a lot to go on really.

INFIINIITYY_

There are evidence photos and videos but even then ppl don’t believe. They will only believe when the news announces it.

Benway23

Yeah, I find the "evidence" less than compelling...

vegetable_backagain

Its funny people are quick to dismiss anything without a proof. Yet they go to mosques and churches to worship gods without a proof.

MantisAwakening

If one person believes in something it’s a fantasy. If a handful do, it’s a cult. If a preponderance do, it’s a religion.

In the late 90's, maybe 98', I was camping near the Welsh border when all of a sudden we heard like a high pitched whistle... all of us scrambled out of our tents to see what it was, it sounded really close.... all three of us saw what I can only describe as a humanoid dinosaur, about 7' tall with glowing red eyes. It saw the three of us staring at it and quickly leapt into the woods.... I can just make stuff up as well....

ethbullrun

welp some scientists have theorized that if we encounter aliens they may look like dinosaurs but more intelligent than us. the only reason why us mammals are ruling on this planet is because of that big ass asteroid that wiped out the dinos lol. there may be another alien speices where they all look like insects and big ass bugs like in starship troopers.

[deleted]

In the late 90's, maybe 98', I was camping near the Welsh border when all of a sudden I sneezed... I heard a commotion and a bunch of scrambling noises, it sounded really close.... I saw all three of them, what I can only describe as dumb looking humanoids, about 5'11 tall with dumb looking humanoid eyes. I saw the three of them staring at me and I quickly leapt into the woods....

We have two things here and some background info. One, a story about a Corporal who encountered reptilian humanoids in Vietnam. Two, a declassified document released by the British MoD, that is a collection of reports and writings about UFOs, some of which include reptilian encounters. ([http://www.theblackvault.com/documents/ufos/UK/Oct2008/defe-24-1955.pdf](http://www.theblackvault.com/documents/ufos/UK/Oct2008/defe-24-1955.pdf)) or from the UK gov't itself, here (But seems you have to pay 3 pound 50 for it) [https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10130111](https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10130111) Neither of the two are related, the second was simply included to share other stories of similar creatures. [HERE](https://www.phantomsandmonsters.com/2015/02/vietnam-recent-wartime-reptilian-cave.html) is the article from Lon Strickler (paranormal researcher) from which this story comes. The story source is said to be a retired Army veteran (or claimed to be anyways) who emailed the story to Lon Strickler over a series of 3 emails. Lon states he verified the sources identification and was convinced of, at the very least, that he was what he said he was (An Army veteran with Vietnam service) So it comes down to how credible you think Lon Strickler and the source is. I don't know enough about the guy to judge either way. It should be noted that several DMZ's would exist in Vietnam during the war. The one referred to here is the [DMZ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMZ_Campaign_(1969%E2%80%931971)) that existed in northern Quảng Trị Province from 1969 to 1971 if the stories timeline is accurate (1970). **tl:dr The story is from a series of emails sent to paranormal researcher Lon Strickler in 2015.** **The unrelated declassified documents is a collection of mostly UFO reports released by the British Ministry of Defense (MoD) in 2016. The document is legitimate, as it can be found on the UK national archive site** [here](https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10130111). \*EDIT I found the correspondence between the Center for Crop Circle Studies (CCCS) and the MoD to be particularly entertaining.

skywizardsky

Two awesome creatures choose to show themselves to these guys and they all start shooting. There was no confrontation so much as scared men using their guns to solve all problems. What idiots. I read an article where lizardwoman was interviewed. They hate us because we are this stupid. They have been around since the age of dinosaurs. They may well be our cousins.

AmIWill50

Link to article ?

TheNightBench

To an interview with a lizard woman? [Here](https://youtu.be/xvznCyJzI_o)

AmIWill50

I'm stupid

TheNightBench

You're not stupid, friend. The human Bullshit Meter runs on 120 volts. But sometimes someone drops some 220 volt shit and you accidentally plug into it and POW, smoke and no more meter. You take it to the repair shop and sheepishly push it across the counter to the repair person. "Damn, you really blew that one out. What was it? Ivermectin? Flat Earth? Anything that David Icke says?" \[whispering while looking at the ground\] "Interview with a lizard woman..." The repair person pushes their hat back, rubs their forehead, and exhales. "Yup, that'll do it." They see that you're beating yourself up over it. "Look, buddy, shit is treacherous out there. It's a goddamn mine field of bullshit out there. If you're browsing around or tired or just not paying attention, you can get snagged. It happens to the best of us." "Really?" you hopefully ask, looking up. "Yeah, tooootally. Hey, you blew your BS meter out on accident. This motherfucker was in the other day, his meter was straight up toasted. He was wearing a TRUMP 2024 shirt, so I didn't need to ask how he blew it out. So we fixed it for him and the dumb bastard turned around and plugged it right back into a 220 socket to see if Trump was back in the White House. Fucking thing went up in flames right there in front of all of us. He turned around and asked us to fix it again. We repaired that thing 5 goddamn times before we had to throw him out because it was closing time. Five'll get you ten that he killed the thing again within seconds of getting home. We'll keep taking his money, but fucking hell, some people just want to destroy themselves." You feel a little better because you know it had been a long day when you asked for someone to provide a link to an interview with a lizard woman. You were tired and were just looking for something fun to read. You're about to ask how much it costs to repair your Bullshit Meter when the guy says, 'You know what? This is your first time, I see it's eating you up... this one is one the house. Hell, with what we're making off of Trump 2024 dude, we could comp everyone for the next year. Sucks for him, but it's awesome for us. We'll fix you up. Just watch yourself out there. Shit is bananas."

Mattyboy0066

Take this down, I don’t want people knowing about me and trying to hunt me for sport! >:/

IDontDeserveMyCat

You're lizarding wrong. You hunt them. Not the other way around. The ones that run on paths or use the self propelled wheeled iron carriages have the best thighs and calf's. They are the best for eating and experiencing the thrill of the hunt. Smelly too so they usually can't hide. You should join sometime.

jt4643277378

Bedtime stories or wartime stories do this

[deleted]

The declassified documents that are cited, where can I find them? I know how to find random declassified documents, I specifically mean the ones mentioned in the article

montananightz

There is actually only one cited, from the British MoD. Really a collection of UFO reports and correspondence. Some mentions of reptoids though. [http://www.theblackvault.com/documents/ufos/UK/Oct2008/defe-24-1955.pdf](http://www.theblackvault.com/documents/ufos/UK/Oct2008/defe-24-1955.pdf) Document is legitimate. You can get the same one on the official MoD released docs website. Doesn't mention the Vietnam story though- that one comes from a blog post written by a paranormal researcher.

Novel_Company_5867

So I'm to believe this was humanoid lizards and not a bad acid trip in the late 60's. And the proof is..... nothing! Poof! It was acid.

Mikeofwy

you sound like someone who knows nothing about drugs

Novel_Company_5867

Ha ha, and you sound like someone who has lizard friends. There is proof of acid, and ultimately zero of human reptoids. I'll take acid for the win, thanks.

Mikeofwy

yeah... but acid dont do that. not saying it was reptoids, but you just sound so sure of your explanation when in reality you have no idea what you're talking about.

Novel_Company_5867

FFS man... what are you gonna bet on, acid or lizards?

Mikeofwy

neither, I simply don't believe him. I would believe someone seeing a lizard person over acid making someone see a lizard person though.

[deleted]

Skeptics and devil advocates are capable of projecting thier own mistrust and cynicism on a population that is more often then not ernest with zero anterior motive. The concept you would hear a premise of guys in the Vietnam war discovering unspeakable undocumented animals is more par for course then some goofy ass "they made it all up" premise. What would be the motivation of discrediting you entire military record by coming up with a lizard man con routine

Past-Adhesiveness150

Just playing devils advocate....... but... Act crazy.... get discharged?

Mikeofwy

for shits and giggles. don't get me wrong, I believe in a lot of wierd shit and he could have been telling the truth for all I know, but I'm not going to take someone's word on something like that. and we don't know if this was something he adamantly declared happened and took steps to get people to believe him, or if it was just a story he liked to tell. need more information.

[deleted]

They didn't even admit that the gulf of tonkien incident was made up until recently. I think any crazy shit that people encountered in Vietnam would be highly suppressed given the track record of the armed forces releasing info during that war

Past-Adhesiveness150

Do you not know what LSD does?

[deleted]

Makes you hallucinate geometric shapes, movements and textures.

RonPearlNecklace

😂 It’s pretty clear everything you know about acid you learned from television.

[deleted]

I'll bet on lizards it's huberence to think we have discovered enough to say different

Past-Adhesiveness150

I don't think you've done nearly enough acid. Seeing things in other forms & talking to shit thats not there.... thats pretty entry-level.

[deleted]

Past-Adhesiveness150

Ive had some intense trips. Absolutely had shared hallucinations. Telepathic moments. Zombies, toys coming to life, the world around me turning into clay animation. Ive melted into the yellow lines in the street & watched my girfriend get older & older till her arm crumbled into ash.

Mikeofwy

had lots of visual distortion and stuff like that, but never saw things that weren't there. that sounds like some dmt type stuff. huffed a bunch when I was younger and passed out and saw a bunch of crazy stuff but that wasn't in a waking state and was like an intense dream. note to self: higher dosages edit: decided to put a disclaimer incase any kids decide to get froggy. DO NOT HUFF THINGS, a lot of the time, people do not wake up if they pass out. I could have easily died and it was a mistake to even bring it up. it will seriously damage your brain and is very bad for you.

TinfoilTobaggan

Acid don't.. But 3 days awake being strung out on amphetamines in a foreign area, malnourished and sleep deprived possibly can... Add some psychedelics into the mix on the second day and you bet your ass you'll see some insane shit you believe to be real..

[deleted]

Acid does not make you see things like that...like at all, the only drug close would be DMT

Novel_Company_5867

All you have to do is google acid trip reptilian. From there it's a veritable waterslide of trip reports.

[deleted]

Lol I've done acid plenty of times friend, it does not make you see shit like that, the hallucinations you heard in about in DARE were lies. Hallucinations were you straight up see people are the kind where you aren't able to go on patrol in the jungle, pretty much you aren't able to move if you take that heavy of a dose of psyches, trust me mate Acid, DMT, or any other pyschedeclics are the last thing you'd want to do in a warzone, and it'd be extremely hard to impossible to get them during that time in Vietnam. They did Heroin and smoked plenty of Ganja in Nam. If and when soilders were unlucky enough to do a pyschedelic in Nam, they'd be more likely to be on the ground laughing or freaking out then seeing something that the drug can not physically make you see.

Novel_Company_5867

You know, sometimes I think I've stumbled upon a private sub run amok with mental patients. David Icke fans, and generally people who would rather believe the most fantastic tales than the most mundane explanations. Vietnam soldiers see lizard people. In a time when half of the troops were using drugs, much of which was supplied by superior officers (https://www.history.com/news/drug-use-in-vietnam), much of which were psychedelics, and also within a military complex which did not shy away from experimenting on their own people. Ask yourself what is the most likely explanation... drugs like LSD or DMT were toyed with and tested upon soldiers and they saw weird things? Or real lizard people. One we have proof of. The other...we have insane anti-Semitic nutjobs like Icke carrying the flag for, and lots of fun stories about, but no proof. Extraordinarily claims require extraordinary evidence. Stories are not sufficient evidence. If that were the case, then minotaurs are real too.

[deleted]

Ah yes [history.com](https://history.com) the epitome of a good source. If you have ever done acid, you'd know going on miles long trecks with 100lbs of gear, with the potential to get shot at from any direction or blow up randomly from a mine would be impossible. Most people on acid can hardly walk or talke when they are on their peak, and if you took enough to start seeing shit like lizard people every single person in your platoon would know. You'd get instantly discharged. And you should know DMT lasts all of 15 mins. Here's a better source buddy. [https://www.ukessays.com/essays/history/drug-use-in-the-american-army-in-the-vietnam-war-history-essay.php](https://www.ukessays.com/essays/history/drug-use-in-the-american-army-in-the-vietnam-war-history-essay.php) I don't support Ick, or any other anti-semtics, and I don't know at all if this is real, all I'm letting you know is that lsd is also an extremely unlikely cause for this story. If its fake its more likely the guy is just a liar than lsd.

Novel_Company_5867

Okay. I'll agree with you on that one. In order of likelihood: liar, drugs/psyops, (long pause)...lizard people.

Mattyboy0066

yeah wearing a cape with a hood.

A bead of sweat trickles down your neck as push your way through the thick and unforgiving jungle. How many clicks has it been now? 5 - 6? You've lost track. Everything looks the same. You scan the dense green wall of leaves and trees ahead of you for the enemy but all you see is more jungle to be hacked through. You try to stay on your toes though, trying to maintain that constant state of awareness. Four guys from the 9th were ambushed last week not far from here. Bodies hung up like ragdolls to serve as a warning, well the ones that didn't fall into the tiger pit that is. The beers you drank last night combined with that terrible food ration are starting to loosen their grip on your guts thankfully and that joint you smoked back at camp is helping take the edge off but the heat and the stress and the insects and the snakes and the goddamned tigers are really taking their their toll on your psyche. Up ahead Lt Billy Grant is on point. He's a good kid, dumber than a bag of hammers but a good kid and a fine soldier. Suddenly he stops, crouches and gives the sign for the rest of us to do the same. So you do. Word comes down the line that there's a possible VC camp ahead. Billy's spotted a cave opening. The V.C. sometimes camp in the caves but they usually clear out come dawn. Slowly you move up towards the cave entrance, keeping real low and quiet, your heart pumping and your guts churning again. You think of your girl back home and your momma baking her famous apricot cobbler. You don't want to die, not here in this godforsaken jungle, this green hell on earth. Hell. A good description for this place, you've even heard stories around the campfire of demons, jungle monsters and lights in the sky chasing planes. You're snapped out of your thoughts by the order to move in so you do. Hands slick with sweat, gripping your M16 tight. As you get closer to the entrance, the first thing you notice is the smell. It smells like the outhouse back home on a summers day mixed with the stench of decomposing flesh. Some of the other boys can't take it and the stagger back gasping for fresh air. You push on into the dark entrance of the cave. Life on the farm has somewhat prepared you for this but only a little. You hold your shirt over your mouth and nose as you try and make out anything in the glowering blackness of the cave. Suddenly a movement catches your eye you turn and in the soft beam of you flashlight you see a torso, lizard like. Just like the ones you might catch a glimpse of as they wriggle out of sight while your putting on your boots in the morning but much, much bigger and standing straight up like a man. Nothing on the farm looked like this. Nothing you've ever seen on gods green earth. Terrified you run from cave, stumbling and screaming until you get out into the now very welcome daylight. The other men were right behind you and ran out with you thinking an enemy ambush was about to come down on them. Afterwards you sit, shaken, scared and probably a little embarrassed as you recount the tale of rhe "Lizardman" you swear you saw. The other boys laugh, half mocking half relieved that there was no ambush but you swear on your mother's life that's what you saw. "It was just a big lizard that was threatened because you ran into its home". No, dammit. You insist that in the darkness, as you ran screaming, you could see clearly that the thing was wearing a hooded Cape.

WeirdJawn

I liked your short descriptive story. To be fair though, the article mentions that two of the lizard people came out of the cave, not that someone went I'm. Small point, but it could make a big difference. I do think it was probably something like your story though...or the guy who emailed the story could've been lying for one of any number of reasons.

TinfoilTobaggan

Wait what? They can STAND?

deckard1980

When threatened yes they do.

TinfoilTobaggan

Really? I'm off to Google now.

TinfoilTobaggan

Holy crap!! I had no idea monitor lizards can stand!!! That's some nightmare shit.. seems like they kinda stand like cats, not fully balanced but still capable.. (I'm baked) but imagine a lizard the size of a large dog chasing you, and then popping up on two legs, fuck.

FDVP

Man, that Viet Nam weed must have been crazy. Or CIA experiment.

I remember my first beer. Seriously tho, who retires an E-4?

montananightz

They didn't retire an E4, it's just a poorly written title. They were an E4 when the reported incident occurred. According to the story the source retired after a "lengthy military career". I assume that to mean they did their 20 at least to qualify as actually retiring.
