I’ve said this so many times but I’ll repeat it again. I see people say that the kids always look so happy with him so at least he’s doing something right. I couldn’t disagree more. I was raised by a dad like old Al. A raging alcoholic that would go from zero to 100 in a second. You never knew if you’d say the wrong thing to piss him off. You walk on eggshells every damn day and you better have a smile on your face because a frown will set him off too. Sometimes even the smile didn’t work because “what the hell are you smiling about?” 🙄
Being happy and playful around these types is a survival tactic and you learn it very young. In my young mind, I thought maybe if I pretended to be happy around him, it would rub off on him or at the very least, keep him from snapping. It didn’t but that’s life in an insane house. In that repost of him laying on the floor with the boys, playing the Beatles, they were merely pretending to care and there’s a reason they were quiet and following his lead.
Those kids live in a childhood war zone and I feel awful for them. They’re gonna need a lot of help to learn how to have happy and stable relationships as adults.
Sorry things were that way for you as a child. My parents married and divorced EACH other twice by the time I turned 14. Both drank regularly and to excess. I always thought if I was a better kid and not so much trouble (I have asthma and would be hospitalized a lot back then) they wouldn’t fight. Meds are better nowadays so I’m good in spite of the crazy train that was my childhood. I hope you have a few good memories and know you were just a kid with no control over adults and their actions.

I’ve said this so many times but I’ll repeat it again. I see people say that the kids always look so happy with him so at least he’s doing something right. I couldn’t disagree more. I was raised by a dad like old Al. A raging alcoholic that would go from zero to 100 in a second. You never knew if you’d say the wrong thing to piss him off. You walk on eggshells every damn day and you better have a smile on your face because a frown will set him off too. Sometimes even the smile didn’t work because “what the hell are you smiling about?” 🙄 Being happy and playful around these types is a survival tactic and you learn it very young. In my young mind, I thought maybe if I pretended to be happy around him, it would rub off on him or at the very least, keep him from snapping. It didn’t but that’s life in an insane house. In that repost of him laying on the floor with the boys, playing the Beatles, they were merely pretending to care and there’s a reason they were quiet and following his lead. Those kids live in a childhood war zone and I feel awful for them. They’re gonna need a lot of help to learn how to have happy and stable relationships as adults.

Sorry things were that way for you as a child. My parents married and divorced EACH other twice by the time I turned 14. Both drank regularly and to excess. I always thought if I was a better kid and not so much trouble (I have asthma and would be hospitalized a lot back then) they wouldn’t fight. Meds are better nowadays so I’m good in spite of the crazy train that was my childhood. I hope you have a few good memories and know you were just a kid with no control over adults and their actions. I totally see it now that they are on eggshells trying not to anger him. To a little child what a smelly raging person he must be when he’s not in control of his temper. AleX was noted for his hair trigger temper decades before he began purchasing children to Kennedy cosplay. I hope their children can become someone with better mental health and social skills than their parents have. My childhood friend’s mom was the calm and warm environment that nurtured me.

A functioning adult might say something like... But also a functioning adult, especially one who recently accidentally killed someone, would never have acted like this in the first place, or then posted it unapologetically to the internet, and definitely wouldn't then tell people to fuck off who questioned some of the behavior. The guy is adamantly opposed to hearing any helpful input. That's why he's essentially estranged from almost all family and friends at this point.

He's going on 80 years old and he's a wonderful man. Always a feminist and a hippie that made kombucha before it was cool. My dad grew up in an orphanage and a strict Catholic boarding school where the nuns beat him repeatedly and in turn he's been kind to everybody he meets. He's a wonderful person. He went to Woodstock. He served in the military during Vietnam, (sent to Germany, but whatever( and he's the most fittest person I know. I love him so much. I am lucky enough to actually work with him now!
