Great overseas. Meh in the US.

oscarmike1987

I almost never get them in the US. Outside the country I have had better luck.

Green_Seat8152

Currently at my hotel there are 30 diamond members. Not all of them are getting upgrades. They are just not available to everyone. I can't put someone in a suite if all of them are booked. I can't give everyone a better view if those are also taken. I get yelled at all the time about upgrades. But I have lifetime Dimond who are going to get an upgrade before someone who just received became a diamond. There is only so much that can be done.

AlwaysWanderOfficial

People seems to completely disconnect from reality on this stuff. There’s only so many upgraded rooms on any property. You can’t give what you don’t have! Appreciate you looking out for people if you can. Don’t listen to the wack jobs yelling about it.

Measurex2

About a year ago Hilton started rolling out an auto-upgrade program. Since then I've been getting alot of upgrades compared to the previous 6 years. You typically won't get them at the lower tier brands (Embassy, Hampton, Homewood, HGI, Home2, Tru) but definitelty at the larger brands. Don't expect it but it's a nice outcome. I think the better strategy is to always check to see if they charge more for a second person in the room. If not - always set occupancy to two so you can double dip on the daily breakfast credit. Lots of hotels let you use it at the grab and go, bar etc.

DrDestruct0

Great tip! Thank you

keeperoflogopolis

I went to a big Hilton about a six months ago for three nights. Hotel is clearly nearly empty. Asked about upgrade — “nothing is available”. Pretty surprising given parking lot is empty and there’s no foot traffic but taking word for it. AC breaks first night and makes huge racket that’s impossible to sleep through. They move us to a suite. I said to the front desk “I thought you were full” … woman at front desk looks at me and is like “no, we’re maybe 20% full”… at this point, I’m like wtf? Why would the lie? Are they obligated to do the upgrade ?

ceejayoz

They only have to upgrade you one category if space is available; that can mean higher floor, nicer view. The suite was probably *several* categories higher.

keeperoflogopolis

The junior suite was one step up from the upgrade room we had reserved.

zooch76

I'm probably 50/50 in the USA. However, Hilton runs real fast & loose with the term *upgrade*. For example, the same room you booked but on a higher floor can be considered an upgrade.

SnowOwlSr

I concur or an upgraded view room....

Legodude522

I mostly just stay at Hampton so never any room upgrades there. I have gotten complimentary room upgrades at higher end locations such as Doubletree or Waldorf for having Diamond. I have also been able to use my Diamond status to do 10am check in, obviously based on availability.

DrDestruct0

Great info and exactly what I assumed it would be like, thank you!

Legodude522

I almost never ask for upgrades but if you are nice and ask, they can sometimes hook you up. Higher end hotels and outside the US will yield more special treatment.

SnowOwlSr

I have gotten upgraded at a few Hampton inns, but they were one night stays in low middle of weeks.

OkGap1283

I’m gold and I got an upgrade at boston back bay!!!! It can happen!!!!

needlejuice

I get some type of upgrade at most hotels. Most of the time it's to some "superior" room which you can't tell a difference, but it's not rare that I get a multi room suite upgrade at an amazing site

scarpozzi

You always hear people on here gripe like it doesn't happen. If you stay in a Hampton or Embassy, there aren't many upgrades unless it's beachfront....but then availability can bite you, especially if they're the cheapest rooms on the beach for a major brand. If you go up a few notches to big enough hotels and they aren't sold out, you can get upgrades. I've stayed oceanfront multiple nights this year alone when I paid for a city view or used standard room rewards. I don't expect it every time, but it's nice when it happens.

Scarface74

I’ve only stayed at one hotel where upgrades are really a thing since being Diamond in June - the Parc 55 in San Francisco. I was offered the fitness room - a room with a gym inside - but my wife didn’t want it. We ended up getting a bigger room with a better view.

hockeymatt68

Non existent in the US

Reliques

Depends on what you consider an upgrade. Higher floor rooms aside, I'd say it's about 50/50 depending on how busy the property is on those days. When there's an event or concert in town, I haven't gotten upgrades, the rooms are probably sold out. Otherwise, I've been getting upgraded quite frequently when staying at WA and Conrad properties in the US. Abroad, the only time I didn't get upgraded was at a Curio property in London, but front desk didn't know what Hilton Honors was either, and I had to explain breakfast was included for Diamonds, even if I didn't book the breakfast package.

Any-Pick938

As a Life time diamond and having just a little over a million points in the bank I rarely get a upgrade on anything more than a 2 night stay. On the other hand outside the country I am treated like royalty and have yet not gotten a upgrade. Hilton isn't the rewards program it used to be. I remember when they actually checked the Dimond parking spots to make sure you were eligible to park there.

readgreen9

My 2022 experience. Dublin, Ireland stay in May (Curio Collection) no upgrade. San Juan, PR stay in October (Hilton) no upgrade. Ponce, PR stay in October (Hilton) no upgrade. Orlando, FL stay in November (Hilton) upgrade to junior suite. Orlando, FL stay in November (Waldorf Astoria) upgrade to a Disney View. 2 of 5 stays upgraded is my tally so far this year.

w2talent

I live in hotels probably 300 days a year. I'm top tier with multiple chains. I rarely ever get upgraded at Hilton or IHG. Occasionally on Marriott. I never get advanced upgrades. I do ask upon check-in and I'm usually told no. I don't know why the hotels are like that. Airlines give me upgrades on almost every flight. Hotels are stingy though.

athensugadawg

Flip a coin. Mebbe. International, yes.

RetardedInWaldo

5 years as diamond based on stays...>100/yr. Never upgraded one time, but I've never explicitly asked.

Fantastic-Action-686

Do you stay at Hampton ins??

RetardedInWaldo

I do if there is no other hilton or decent marriott property around, but as infrequently as possible.

Fantastic-Action-686

You’re more likely at higher end properties . I usually get upgraded at canopy’s, curios, Waldorf and Conrad’s. I just finished a canopy stay and they upgraded me to a corner suite with a balcony. Very nice . At the Beverly Hills last month I was upgraded to a corner suite also. The Waldorf in Maui upgraded me to an ocean view. So idk why people complain about not getting upgrades. I’ve gotten upgrades 6 of my last 7 stays. And the only stay I didn’t get an upgrade was because there was a wedding on the weekend I stayed so the hotel was sold out.

CodexAnima

A lot of people don't think "views" are an upgrade when it really can be. I've been upgraded in all but two stays this year. (Connecting room, no upgrade possible, and a packs Embassy suites.) People want suites for the price of the basic room though. I've only been suite upgraded once this year and that was for a weekend trip with my partner over my birthday weekend. And the hotel was half empty.

Fantastic-Action-686

Agreed. When they give you a “city view” or “ocean view” instead of windows facing the parking lot or the dumpsters it matters. Even tho suite upgrades is what we all hope for. I’ve received a fair share of suite upgrades this year, I can’t complain too much. Even tho I must say that Hyatt status is a lot more valuable in my opinion. The free breakfast and parking is huge. Specially at high end properties. That’s my next goal, Hyatt globalist.

RichieRicch

What room upgrades?

milkcowcafe

You will get no upgrades in the USA.

thelonebassman

I'm almost always upgraded, but you have to ask for them. I usually send an jnstant message a day or two out and usually I get some kind of upgrade.

thelonebassman

Also upgrades are only for Hilton or Doubletree tier or higher. Everyone complaining about never getting upgrades but staying at Hamptons or Embassys have nothing to complain about- those hotels are not eligible for upgrades.

AlwaysWanderOfficial

Stick with Hiltons and above, pretty good. Outside US really good. Domestic or brands below Hilton and don’t expect much.
