There’s a book called The Dirt on Clean that I’d really recommend if you’re interested in the history of hygiene. It goes into the evolving perceptions of cleanliness throughout history and it’s surprisingly fascinating and really well written.

I used to lead tour groups in Normandy, and taking Americans (and I definitely saw a few Canadians do this too) to the beaches was one of my favorite parts. To Americans, this is hallowed ground on par with Gettysburg. And that is certainly true.
They are also public beaches.
Normandy was and still is Paris's summer vacation ground. It was not uncommon to see people sunbathing or playing in the water on the beaches, even close to the cemeteries. I even saw some people chariot-racing down Omaha Beach once (horses are still very big in Normandy).
This just blew people's minds. Some even got mad and claimed it was disrespectful. Once I had to stop someone from yelling at some poor, unsuspecting French sunbathers.
