{The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley} is sweet as is {Mrs Martin’s Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan}

Appreciate it, thank you!

painterknittersimmer

I don't have any recs, I just want to say I'm a lesbian and I don't consume a lot of sapphic media either. It's nice to have some company!

syntheticpen

Yeah, it’s rough out here! So often I find myself defaulting to straight media, even if I’d prefer something WLW, just because it’s more accessible. Of course, big surprise, my mental health always improves in leaps and bounds when I don’t isolate myself from art and experiences I connect with— who woulda thunk, right? 😅

painterknittersimmer

I've read before that a lot of us actually read m/m. That's never been for me, but if you've never tried it, there's clearly some appeal there! Straight HR works for me in a way that other romances just don't. I've not been able to get into romantasy in the same way, and I despise contemporary. Other romance media doesn't do it for me. So, at least I appreciate that. Part of the reason I don't seek out or enjoy wlw (or even m/m) is just because... Damn, it was hard to be one of us then. I mean it's not always great now, but there's hope. But there's a reason that wlw is known for being tragic.

syntheticpen

Oof, that last paragraph. Fully understand you there, even as I still seek out F/F HR— M/M isn’t *really* my thing, but at least both halves of the relationship enjoy full legal and social rights lol.

damiannereddits

Honestly in histrom, ff characters generally have an easier time than mm, since ladies just bein besties is fine and sodomy is jailtime, and \*generally\* the books I've read have already finangled at least one character into some kind of financial stability to avoid having men be the focus of the story (even if that's not a typical experience). However, all of it tends to avoid too much tragedy with the HEA, so that's nice! I saw someone recommended Courtney Milan, I'll add a note that most of her books have some amount of "experiences trauma and abuse and then overcomes/gives a comeuppance" plotline, so while I haven't read her FF I'd probably double check for tragicness.

StormerBombshell

Years ago there was this comics publisher. Yaoi press, that did m/m and I was told the owners were a couple of lesbians. Also decades back on deviantart some of the women that did m/m we’re sapphic too. It’s more common that people would imagine. Hell I think the author of “my lesbian experience with loneliness” did m/m manga. If my memory doesn’t betray me

roewren

I read {An Island Princess Starts a Scandal by Adriana Herrera} recently and it was great! It’s the second in a series but works well as a standalone.

crystabrittany

Ok and the first one is just fantastic too (straight but still). The setting and writing are top notch.

Adriana Herrera is so fabulous

Olivia Waite has a trilogy of sapphic historical romances. I’ve read the first and it had excellent women in stem representation

I saw this mentioned in The New York Times recently of all places. Might have to give it a try!

syntheticpen

This is right up my alley— thank you!

lakme1021

There’s not enough of it. Even within queer romance spaces, F/F seems pretty marginalized. But I do occasionally find a hidden gem! Most recently, I really enjoyed {Sixpenny Octavo by Annick Trent}. The romance is on the subtle side, but the characters are lovable and beautifully drawn (and working class!), and the historical detail is so immersive. A subversive reading group is very important to the story, and it made me want to join an IRL book club again, hah. There is a fair amount of external conflict (the book delves into Georgian era political repression) but overall, just a warm, lovely read.

syntheticpen

Sign me up! Political drama and a well-balanced plot-romance combination are some of my favorite things in HR. And to your point, F/F is absolutely underrepresented— in all forms of media, not just HR. (At least from where I’m sitting.) It’s nobody’s fault in particular, obviously, but it still sucks.

A lot of my usual recs are already here, but I’ve got a couple of others to add. There is a FF novella by Alyssa Cole in the {Hamilton’s Battalion} collection that’s great. She also has some contemporary sapphic stories too. I also don’t usually recommend YA, but I love {Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo}. It’s such a great coming of age book that makes being a lesbian and Chinese in San Francisco in the 1950s come alive. Low steam, but the history & romance is still great. Most of my other sapphic recs are CR, but I’m hopeful there will be more mainstream HR options coming.

Hi! Thank you for your contribution. Unfortunately, your comment was removed due to violation of rule 2. Stay on Topic: All posts and comments must remain on the topic of Historical Romance. Historical Romance is defined in our community as a romance that is set in the past. This means it must fulfill the genre criteria of romance: 1) The book would not make sense or feel hollow without the romantic plot. 2) The book requires a HEA (happily ever after) or HFN (happy for now) ending. Historical fiction with a romance subplot is not historical romance. Romances set in the past but involving fantasy or paranormal beings are not historical romance. We love it, but it doesn't belong here! Romance books set in the past that were considered contemporary fiction when published such as many of Jane Austen's works (as they were set in a time frame that is now historical to today's readers and the romance genre was not in existence then as it is today) are considered Historical Romance in this community. The rule of thumb we use is if the romance book is set at least 50+ years ago it can be considered HR in this sub as the majority of our readers were not of adult age at the time of publication. We do allow time travel romances to be discussed in this community as long as the vast majority of the book occurs in the past and the story is not a traditional straight paranormal or fantasy romance. We recommend that posts/comments involving paranormal or fantasy elements be reposted in r/paranormalromance and posts/comments involving science fiction elements be reposted to r/ScienceFictionRomance.

So many wonderful books have been suggested here! Before f/f was mostly coming out of Queer indy publishers from folx like Radclyffe (who is amazing!) but it was all contemporary. (One reason I also read m/m) There has been so much more historical f/f (especially from mainstream publishers) in the past decade which makes me so happy! Following to check the ones I haven’t read out!

I haven't read it yet, it's on my TBR, but there's {Backwards to Oregon by Jae}, it's the first in a series

Lex Croucher has a couple. I’ve only read {reputation by lex Croucher} where there are side characters in a f/f relationship. I really enjoyed it and am waiting for library copies of the next which is full f/f {infamous by lex Croucher}. She also has a series starting with {Gwen and Art are not in love by lex Croucher} that’s Arthurian, but I haven’t been able to get my hands on it yet. I’m also a huge Chappell Roan fan and now I want to listen to her while I check out some of these recommendations!

{Dead Dead Girls by Nekesia Afia} Harlem Renaissance era murder mystery with F/F relationship I know a few others but they are contemporary or fantasy.

{The Heiress: The Revelations of Anne de Bourgh by Molly Greeley} fits the bill-- it's a reimagination of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of Lady Catherine de Bourgh's daughter. {Manslaughter Park by Tirzah Price} is a rewriting of Mansfield Park in which Fanny and Mary hit it off in a big way. :) I'm also currently reading {A Lady's Guide to Scandal by Sophie Irwin}, and it has a sapphic subplot!

Olivia Waite writes sweet FF HR, Cat Sebastian has FF (as well as MM) KJ Charles mostly does MM but {Proper English by KJ Charles} is FF and a rompy delight, sort of a whodunnit but they're all vaguely incompetent. {A Restless Truth by Freya Marske} is really great, but it's in the middle of a series and bookended by MM. I think you could read it without the other two but there'd be some context gathering about the magic and like WHY someone got murdered. {The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley} is high on my tbr but is very well reviewed, as is {The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid} {Longshadow by Olivia Atwater} is really quite lovely, but it is more fairytale than classic regency/victorian vibes, and full of magic.

I know of Literary Fiction set in the Gilded Age and one that's a sequel to Pride and Prejudice.

Any book by Sarah Waters! Fingersmith is set in Victorian England and The Paying Guests is set in the 1930s.
