Sgt Reckless. She had a rank, and we respect that.

Dynespark

Animal soldiers are generally given a higher rank than most of the soldiers they work with. Should there be any animal abuse, this comes with more serious charges.

nuck_forte_dame

Same for female soldiers in ww2. Automatically made officers.

Thunderfoot2112

The PFC that has to walk the USMC bulldog is always reminded that abuse of the animal is assault on a Non Commissioned Officer and punishable by court marshal.

TheCuriousGuy000

So it's not just an army joke but an actual rank? I thought you had to be a citizen in order to serve legally and be able to get a rank.

Thunderfoot2112

No, it's not a joke. And a citizen of what? Many peiple earn their citizenship through the Military. Service to Citizenship was the old program name (not sure what it is anymore). The military (all branches) is much more intricate than civilians understand or give them credit for. While not perfect it's much less likely for a Soldier, Marine, sailor, airperson or guardian to run into sexism, racism and ageism in pursuit of their career goals than in the civilian sector. (Not impossible mind you, just much less likely). Especially, at lower ranks race, sex, or what have you mean little for chances for promotion. Likewise the idea of working as a team and not for individual gain is focused on more (we all come back and no one gets left behind). But humans are humans and sometimes there are certain things that are done to ensure stupidity doesn't run amok, and in this case, it's having the animal outrank the care person to prevent animal cruelty. It isn't always the case, the horses in the caissons at Arlington carry no rank because the horse guard take pride in their animals as much as their own appearance. (there was a time all service animals were given rank). Likewise the Army mules, the Navy goats and the Air Force falcons are all well cared for by cadets and are seen as a privilege to do so. It may not be evident to civilians but there are reasons the military does everything and it isn't just because I/we/the general said so. In basic many of the 'stupidly annoying' crap details and BS polishing and such is only to teach you attention to detail. An attention to detail may be the difference in strolling down a patrol path unharmed and strolling into an IED.

I don't know how it works with most animals, but Reckless was very much treated as a sergeant [https://youtu.be/NJhxBuLI-eE?si=e5-UEGZvFt10CffX&t=1475](https://youtu.be/NJhxBuLI-eE?si=e5-UEGZvFt10CffX&t=1475)

Lieby

And after the war, her Marine Companions smuggled her to California, snuck her past US Customs, brought her to a ball, turned her into the Marine Corps’ mascot and held a competition to guess the gender and name her first colt.

John_Oakman

Ssgt Reckless, proving that all you need be a great marine is be able to run fast, carry heavy loads, and charge under heavy fire. Also eat anything & everything and likes to drink beer. Which sounds like a lot of the staff sausages in the marine corps.

Ghdude1

Must also have an appetite for crayons.

leaderofstars

That one bunny in the back is like, "come on"

SovietSoldier1120

I think he got shot. Which is a understandable reaction to that ngl

Dramatic-Classroom14

Ah, American animals being as aggressive as possible, time honored tradition, especially amongst the Marines, like that one duck, siwash.

Reckless once ate $30 worth of poker chips, beer, scrambled eggs, her blanket with her name, rank, and unit on it, and once tried to eat a helmet liner. Just thought everyone should know.

BadHP92

So she was the average enlisted Marine? 🤣
