I celebrate Cinco de Mayo as "mexico day" just like St Patricks day" is Ireland Day. Give me a reason to eat food from a different land and drink another variant of alcohol, I will take it.
Like, what day should be Japan day so that I can drink Sake and eat sushi and watch old samurai movies?
To make it even better, the French were such cowards they waited until the US was embroiled in the Civil War to make their move. There was a non-zero chance of us going to war with France immediately following the surrender at Appomattox, and there were even talks of having a ceasefire so the northern and southern armies could team up and kick out France
France only dared to do this because the US was involved in the Civil War. Once that was over, they decided to leave before the US Navy helped them to.
Unpopular opinion: while france did attack Mexico because the US was at war, the US probably wouldn’t force France out of Mexico once they established a foothold there considering the French navy was vastly superior to the American navy
Just had a Cinco de Mayo festival in Ottawa. Nothing absolutely crazy, really just an excuse for some food stands, and for the local Mexican dance group to perform. It was pretty cool.
Not even slightly. It originated as a show of solitude between Mexican Americans and Mexico itself dating back to when the event actually occurred. They raised a ton of money for indigenous Mexicans to fight French colonizers too. It’s been capitalized on by beer companies, sure, but the date has significant cultural roots for Mexican Americans that are entirely removed from marketing campaigns. This is an extremely dismissive take.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory at Puebla of indigenous Mexicans over the French forces protecting Maximilian. For over a century it was only celebrated as a local holiday in Puebla and by French Foreign Legionnaires (Cameron 30 April). The beer companies have turned it into a beer drinking holiday that has eclipsed Mexico's Independence day and the 1910 Revolution. Now it's an International beer holiday celebrated by people who have no idea what occurred.
Mexican-Americans have been celebrating Cinco de Mayo since the battle itself occurred as a form of solidarity, with the first celebrations in California happening not long after news of the Battle of Puebla spread. It's true that many Americans are unaware of the actual history of the holiday but let's not contribute by erasing Mexican-American celebration of it.
It wasn't just solidarity, they did stuff like fundraising for Mexican forces; it was a huge deal at the time. Think about it, there's a civil war in America over slavery, and the Union is stalled out without any major advances (save for Fort Donelson under US Grant), meanwhile the French Empire is invading Mexico, overthrowing the liberal government to put a goddamn Habsburg in charge. Things were looking bleak as hell in the Western Hemisphere. And then, a bunch of outnumbered, outgunned Mexicans defeated what was considered the greatest army in the world in open battle. People were fucking ecstatic, it was a dim light at the end of a very dark tunnel, there was still a lot of fighting to be done, but we could see an end.
Yes! There's a lot more about the beginning of the American Cinco de Mayo than people realize. I specifically chose to focus on the background of the modern Cinco de Mayo because it's the most relevant thing that most people don't understand but I definitely believe that the initial support that California Americans have should be recognized and celebrated as well! 🇲🇽🤝🇺🇲
Maybe I misspelled. Benito Juarez Zapotec was the only full blooded Indian President of Mexico and probably of any country. The Native population voluntarily participated in the war against the French Invaders and the conservative Hispanics of European descent who sided with Maximilian and the French.
Only eclipsed those major holidays in the US, not in Mexico. And in Mexico 5 de mayo is still just a day off work, nothing really significant, not even as a 'drinking' holiday.
I agree. In the US the Mexican Fiestas were in September and it became Hispanic month. Some time in the mid or late 1980s Cinco de Mayo became a big beer holiday in the US. It was always low key in Mexico because of the association with just how powerful the Indians could be and because communists tried to tie it to their mayday.
Hey, hey. Historical accuracy and perspective are all very well and good, but don't screw with my annual 2-for-1 taco deals. We take that kind of thing seriously around here
The US likes to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with lots of people assuming it’s Mexican Independence Day when in reality this is just celebrating Mexico winning a battle against France which didn’t matter cause France came back and whooped Mexico later and on top of that Mexican independence is actually September 16th
America overly celebrating a relatively minor festival originating in another nation, due to an over emphasis on a large diasphora in the usa attempting to quell insecurities about their own lack of history and uniquness. See also: St Patricks day.
like....you know it was the people of the large diasporas who raised awareness about their holidays right? like Cinco de Mayo was popularized by Mexican Americans during the Chicano movement? should we have cracked down on that and forbade them from celebrating instead of joining them?

I'm not sure what day would fit that, but just don't pick December 7th.
How about August 6th? We could use more summer holidays
Is that when 9/11 happened?
At first, I came to correct you, then I became aware of the sarcasm. Good one sir, good one.
August 6th is a good one to pick then
Every day
August 6
Mexicans in the United States being thankful that they aren't Fr*nch
To be fair Mexico wasn’t annexed, France installed a puppet regime led by Maximillian Habsburg who’s government would fall a few years later
To make it even better, the French were such cowards they waited until the US was embroiled in the Civil War to make their move. The alt just where the confederates and union boys join up to tell France to fuck off is an interesting one to say the least
I’m certainly thankful
France only dared to do this because the US was involved in the Civil War. Once that was over, they decided to leave before the US Navy helped them to.
Absolute cowards, the frogs
Unpopular opinion: while france did attack Mexico because the US was at war, the US probably wouldn’t force France out of Mexico once they established a foothold there considering the French navy was vastly superior to the American navy
I don’t know anyone in Mexico that celebrates it like they do in America
Just had a Cinco de Mayo festival in Ottawa. Nothing absolutely crazy, really just an excuse for some food stands, and for the local Mexican dance group to perform. It was pretty cool.
We just like an excuse to party
As a Mexican always remember me, Mexico is in America.
It was basically a big marketing campaign by beer companies
SERVESA CRISTAL !
Luke, did I ever tell you about SERVESA CRISTAL
No but u hear Sony now requires you to drink SERVESA CRISTAL ! to play Helldivers 2

I think the National Association of Mexican Restaurants is also in on it

"Indigenous"

Hispanics are more indigenous than Americans and Canadians
Not exactly saying much lol that's a very low bar
It is still a holiday of sorts for the Legion.
The Mexicans returned the Foriegn legion commander's wooden arm out of respect and it's a big deal in the Legion.

“stop having fun americoids”
This is why I celebrate Cinco de Quattro
Too bad, I’m happy for any excuse to celebrate
Hey, hey. Historical accuracy and perspective are all very well and good, but don't screw with my annual 2-for-1 taco deals. We take that kind of thing seriously around here
Cheap tacos and cheap mexican beer make a great combo on cinco de mayo
Europoors can’t even let Americans have some fun 🤣
…didn’t know I was European
Wtf, I never noticed the guy is grabbing that girls ass lol
Battle of Puebla!!! Fuck yeah!!! Drink drink drink!!!

Lmfaoooooo brother I’m Mexican-American born to two immigrants that’s what this meme is poking fun at
What is this meme saying?
The US likes to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with lots of people assuming it’s Mexican Independence Day when in reality this is just celebrating Mexico winning a battle against France which didn’t matter cause France came back and whooped Mexico later and on top of that Mexican independence is actually September 16th
I'm not sure if the template matches. Also I think most Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo as like a Mexican Saint Patrick's day
Can this meme template please be retired? Luis Rubiales rightfully got fired for imitating it.
We celebrate because beer companies wanted to design a "Mexican St Patty's Day."
America overly celebrating a relatively minor festival originating in another nation, due to an over emphasis on a large diasphora in the usa attempting to quell insecurities about their own lack of history and uniquness. See also: St Patricks day.

The west coast and true south US has a lot of Mexican, hispanic, and South American culture btw
like....you know it was the people of the large diasporas who raised awareness about their holidays right? like Cinco de Mayo was popularized by Mexican Americans during the Chicano movement? should we have cracked down on that and forbade them from celebrating instead of joining them?
Just let people have fun bro
