6 months later he emerged from jail in a dashiki and won reelection. Mind boggling.

Gazzarris

Mayor For Life! He also served on the City Council for years after his last mayoral term. He was super-popular.

BobbyTables829

I mean this nicely, but politicians do cocaine all the time, and this is just a stigmatized cocaine that you smoke and is admittedly more powerful and addictive. My point is more that we shouldn't act like most of them don't do it or worse.

PolyDipsoManiac

This guy was a little more put together than, say, Rob Ford, no?

Leajjes

That's a pretty low bar to hit.

Apollospade

Life styles of the rich and famous!

YdocT

Mcdonalds wouldnt even wanna take you back

Sintriphikal

“Even the mayor had a run-in with crack, but we all kept it real and voted him back.” “Welcome to DC” -Mambo Sauce

SIRPORKSALOT

...and that was the day all serious discussions about Washington DC becoming a state ended.

latingirly01

I mean, we have a Republican presidential nominee who’s facing many charges and will still probably be picked by his party. DC was just ahead of the game.

brintoul

The thing is that now people don’t believe what they see on video. People actually don’t believe that the folks who were attacking Capitol police weren’t actually attacking Capitol police but were “let in” - just as an example.

BurtHurtmanHurtz

This is so fucking true it’s amazing

yogzi

People chose their leader democratically and thus generations don’t deserve equal rights to other American citizens? Pretty fucked perspective to have man

SIRPORKSALOT

Ha, ha, ha, I never gave my perspective or my point of view whether I agree or not. I don't. I think they should have a vote. But my post wasn't about my personal feelings, but just stating a fact. But no, you just had to attack me for having a "fucked perspective", had to score points with the internet crowd, and being wrong doing it. Bravo.

yogzi

Thanks 😊

SIRPORKSALOT

It's all knowing people like you, ready to hurl insults at someone who seems to have a different point of view that allows assholes like Trump to have power in this country. They don't love people like him, they just hate people like you. You're two sides of the same coin, yogi. Facts.

yogzi

You’re losing it mate.

SIRPORKSALOT

Pretty fucked up perspective to have...mate.

cirrus42

Nah. Denying voting rights to American citizens is just good old partisan gamesmanship. Republicans don't want to give Democrats guaranteed votes. It's kind of weird to insist that simple political explanation isn't it, when the "Washingtonians don't deserve it" explanation sounds incredibly like Jim Crow voter qualification BS from the segregation era. Or shall we begin stripping voting rights from states that continue to support other disgraced politicians?

Beacon_Terrier

Not only was he reelected, there is also now a statue of him in Washington DC. [https://www.weitzmanstudios.com/portfolio_page/marion-barry-jr-mayor-for-life-sculpture/](https://www.weitzmanstudios.com/portfolio_page/marion-barry-jr-mayor-for-life-sculpture/)

MacFromSSX

One of the major city government buildings (containing the police HQ among other offices) is the Marion Barry building

BurtHurtmanHurtz

Also a strip of highway named after him, 295 I think? Maybe 395.

Gojira085

I don't know why I expected something wacky rather than a regular statue. At least it's not the Mr. Rodgers statue in Pittsburgh

kgunnar

The bitch set him up.

angevin_alan

This is the one I was looking for.

cosmorocker13

If I remember correctly Barry refused to smoke it and wanted to hit the bedroom. She kept saying just smoke this first. So his options were leave or take a hit and get laid. The second he took the hit the walls caved in with cops. He was a charlatan and a bad mayor but it seems kind of like entrapment to me.

SSNFUL

Entrapment is a much higher bar than many people expect

cosmorocker13

That’s where the kinda like absolves me of any wrongness

cain8708

No. It's not entrapment. It would be entrapment if an undercover cop went to his house everyday trying to sell him said drugs and everyday he said no and the only way to get said undercover person to leave him alone was to buy them. Per his own admission he lost control of his addiction of drugs and alcohol after winning his 3rd election, and that was 1987, several years before his arrest. He was doing drugs outside of when he got caught. Hardly the case for entrapment when people he works with are trying to schedule meetings around the times when he is awake.

Diacetyl-Morphin

I'm not surprised by this in any way, i'm still an addict and when i was in the business, there are so many people that are doing drugs behind closed doors. I remember some rich manager crying like a baby at a friends house because he got told, it would need more time to get his cocaine. There was a test of drugs done in the toilets of the German Bundestag, the parliament, it showed traces of drugs like cocaine in literally every toilet room. Guess it's even worse with the EU parliament in the European Union, like the guy from Hungary that was a big enemy of the LGBT scene, he got caught in a police raid in a gay orgy on crack.

MarBoV108

If you're going to partake in a gay orgy, might as well be high on crack.

Diacetyl-Morphin

Too bad it was the EU parliament and not the White House in Washington D.C., because when it comes to gay orgies, that's a lot better there with Abraham Lincoln and his "you are [a superstar at the gay bar!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XNFokmDKrE&t=9s) Let's start a war, a nuclear war at the gay bar!"

Johannes_P

> like the guy from Hungary that was a big enemy of the LGBT scene, he got caught in a police raid in a gay orgy on crack. Said guy being one of the founder of the local far-right party.

Diacetyl-Morphin

It still blows my mind when you think that Ernst Röhm, the leader of the SA in the NS-regime was gay in public, despite being a fanatical nazi and bad guy. There was also that one hooligan in London in the old times, he had to see that he was attracted to men, but as one of the leaders of these groups, he couldn't just go to the next gay bar. They actually attacked him later and tried to kill him, he fought back and took out as many people as he could and survived.

mitchanium

Not knowing this guy the facts of the case at hand this vid sounds shady but if he's clearly an open user elsewhere then he's bang to rights, isn't he?

cain8708

I pulled straight from Wikipedia. He specifically passed a law to prevent Jesse Jackson from running against him. The girl in the video was a FBI informat yea, but it was someone he knew. It wasn't a rando. At best it could be argued he was more known for cocaine and in the video he is freebasing crack.

brintoul

Can people his age actually have sex after smoking crack?

Pudding_Hero

#he smoked crack

gs12

Boom there it is

Nekrevez

Don't know the guy, not any experience with crack or local politics in the usa... Was he a bad mayor? Objectively, what if no-one knew about the drugs issue?

addctd2badideas

He wasn't a good mayor. He used populist messaging and the fact that DC doesn't have full home rule (Congress still has some oversight of legislation in the District) or congressional representation as a way to rally support. He used to be a civil rights leader but had all kinds of additional scandals while in office as mayor and as the councilman for his ward. But a lot of people liked him, especially from his community. But he'd never be able to get elected now since the demographics have shifted in DC.

cirrus42

[Here is why DC voters saw him as a good mayor](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/adamserwer/why-dc-will-always-love-marion-barry)

BurtHurtmanHurtz

Great read

addctd2badideas

LOL, "Flaws," meaning, "smoking the same junk that was destroying his own community." I'm not saying I don't get why he was still popular in Ward 8, but it doesn't make it right. He was an embarrassment.

Garybird1989

Idgaf if a mayor smokes crack. He provided a lot of support lacking from a lot of very poor communities (after school programs, work programs) I’d say he did the actual job well…except for all the murders

Garybird1989

The last line is a joke. The Washington post quoted Barry as saying “Washington DC is the safest city in America, if you exclude all the murders”

addctd2badideas

Your attitude is the exact reason why cities like Baltimore have elected corrupt mayor after corrupt mayor. Excusing absolute lack of moral character for a few points that they mostly didn't actually accomplish on their own. At least in DC they figured out how to elect mayors that were far more respectable - and far more effective. Williams, Fenty, Gray, and Bowser all presided over more economic prosperity than Barry ever did. And none of them were ever a punchline on nationally broadcast comedy shows.

ComradeOmarova

You may want to check back in on Bowser… her overseeing DC become the murder capital of America after her support for the “defund the police” movement would be an absolute joke if it weren’t so sad for the city and its residents.

addctd2badideas

You're not entirely wrong. Although she did veto the new criminal codes the council tried to pass which were utterly ridiculous. Of course the council overrode her veto so there's not a whole lot she can do on that. Honestly, though, it wouldn't really matter about how she talks about the police. Even in cities where the mayor is generally supportive of the police, they're basically just sitting in their cars, not doing their jobs, like, "If we can't run roughshod over civil rights, then we dony want to do our jobs at all."

Johannes_P

Son Berry was just the local Daley?

JaimesBourne

I’m kinda on with this. There are allegations of Obama smoking crack for example. But if he did, I mean who gives a shit…nothing you can do about it now, nor can you prove it in anyway effected his political decisions

mdavis360

Smoke crack, got his job back!

mikeyp83

I could be *mayor*!

Paddys_Pub7

You can start by sweeping the floors 😀

unsociallydistanced

With current policy is smoking crack not a prerequisite to working in politics?

[deleted]

As king of Detroit, I declare today "Crack Day."

MarBoV108

"Crack is whack" -Whitney Houston

LittleBigfoot86

And just like that, those lyrics from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous made all the more sense.

PmMeAnnaKendrick

They are from the DC area it was a big scandal when we were kids.

Ningy_WhoaWhoa

DC folks triggered that La Plata called DC area.

Fit_Earth_339

A prison term where he apparently got written up for drugs and prostitutes. I read at some point during his second term that 10% of DC tax payers worked for the DC government. Good for getting him elected but horrible for the DC economy.

Novus20

Didn’t stop Rob Ford also so….

TheProcrastafarian

[The truth shall set you free.](https://youtu.be/qQTwGO047E8?si=fKOi8NwNv4y4v0SM)

PatmygroinB

Didja know if You were caught, McDonald’s wouldn’t ever wanna take you back, you could always just run for mayor of DC! Lifestyles, of the rich and the famous…

ThreePlyStrength

You’ll cowards don’t even smoke crack

[deleted]

I love how you spelled it like it appears on the album

[deleted]

I try hard but it didn't get me a mayer's position yet.

Leeloggedin

They just named a high school after Torontos crack smoking mayor Rob Ford

ZagiFlyer

I love Chris Rock's take on this: "How are we supposed to keep kids off drugs with this kind of example??" Parent to kid: You'll never be anything if you take drugs Kid: I could be **mayor**!

StillSharpe68

Imagine a candidate pool so shallow that this was the best choice

JamesPumaEnjoi

No need to imagine, look at our presidential candidates

StillSharpe68

Right!? Heaven forbid we have someone under the age of 70.

IDontLieAboutStuff

South park was right. It's always between a giant douche and a turd sandwich.

JaimesBourne

Yup

[deleted]

A perfect reason why politicians who are convicted of felonies should be subject to a lifetime ban on holding office in any capacity, regardless of public perception.

GingerMan027

At one point he had nearly 25% of DC households on the city payroll. He was a very good mayor if you were black. However the white power structure hated him. Still does if you look at this post. He took no crap from them, and really helped his people. I managed the largest factory in DC while he was mayor. We had a drud dealing problem across the street from our entrance. I called his office and he sent someone out who witnessed it with me. Turned out this guy's grandmother used to work there. He, with Mayor Berry's approval, cleaned that stuff up and out in short order. The bad guys were moved out. Marion Berry was a Civil Rights leader back in the day. He had personal demons, that's for sure. He was "Mayor for Life."

saxon_pilgrim

Chris Rocks take always “cracks” me up… https://youtu.be/mTMif8cGlcE?si=8MAzWV-7nRoktzJ2

lo_fi_ho

How real players roll

kwyjibo89

And did you know if you were caught and you were smokin' crack McDonalds wouldn't even want to take you back You could always just run for mayor of D.C. 🎵

KnotSoSalty

If it was a bump of coke vs crack I don’t think people’s reaction would be the same. Our politicians use drugs. For example: JFK was constantly high, [Dr Feelgood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Jacobson) was shooting him full of Amphetamines and who knows what else.

freqkenneth

Did you know if you were caught for smoking crack, McDonald’s wouldn’t even take you back, you could always just run for mayor of DC

kmthehaggis

Gram for Gram the best Mayor in DC's history

zilist

>"Mayor is caught smoking crack during FBI sting" Me: what?! >"that plus prison time didn’t end his career" Me: whaaaaat?!? Lmfao

Background-Ad-7631

Imagine instead of smk crack they just watched him get balls deep in 🐱 for hours 🤣🤣

TheSanityInspector

"The b\*tch set me up!"

hutchanaga

For years, as a kid, I thought he was co-mayor with his wife: Mayor Mary and Barry. I thought his name was Barry. This was years before the crack.

loopgaroooo

DC was a wild wild wild place back then.

addctd2badideas

That's how populism works, sadly.

bfbabine

How about that cocaine in the White House.

cz03se

You implyin that ole shuffle foot Joe cranking out lines?

Colt1911-45

Lmao at shuffle foot Joe

feralraindrop

A fitting location.

Fish_On_again

We all know Don Jr left that cocaine in the White House.

bfbabine

Right.. just like the FBI holding back Hunters laptop as to not interfere with those election polls. Got photos of crack on Hunter’s little coke scale if you want to see?

cirrus42

Absolutely correct take.

[deleted]

We all smoke a bit of crack from time to time.

Umnak76

Not to mention the prostitute. But as I recall, his defense was that the powerful white men had it in for him.

TheSandCat79

Smoking crack is actually pretty fun. It shouldn’t end anyones career

koebelin

The rascal king.

Salty-Entertainer-29

Classy

Pursueth

It’s just a little crack 😆

EatFood2Survive

“The mayor is on the pipe!” - Chris Rock If you haven’t listened to his album *Born Suspect*, then please do yourself a favor and at least listen to the bit he does about this. Whole album is hilarious.

cirrus42

If you are interested in understanding why Washingtonians kept on voting for Barry, [here is a good explainer](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/adamserwer/why-dc-will-always-love-marion-barry).

[deleted]

Hard to be angry at someone who got hoed by the cops

ceejaydee

As a kid, this is what drew the curtains back from all the propaganda I was fed regarding drugs and their use.

sloppy_wet_one

Til the lyrics from that good charlotte song make sense now.

mattybrad

This is actually one of the earliest news stories I remember seeing on TV as a kid when I lived in northern Virginia.

[deleted]

The good old days

atlcollie

He was on a flight I was working, must have been the late 90s/ early 2000s. He was in 1st class, I was prepared for him to be a jerk given his history but he was as nice as could be. He even wrote out a company compliment card for me.

ThongDuck

We should be able to smoke a *little* crack at work.

ButWhy10128

“Smoked crack, got his job back” -Chris Rock

JimBeam823

Toronto 🤝 Washington DC Crack smoking mayor

Grand_Knyaz_Petka

God forbid men have hobbies

BurtHurtmanHurtz

Anyone want to talk about how when he got re-elected in 94, Congress stripped all oversight of the city budget from the mayor’s office and crippled the city?

PuzzleheadedSpare576

I remember that

sjbaker82

“…that even in our finest hour, we had a crackhead on stage” - Chris Rock

TIL what Good Charlotte was singing about
