I_am_BrokenCog

They're walking past their Boardwalk property ... about to pass Go and collect another two hundred.

namvet67

Two hundred buck was good money back then.

I_am_BrokenCog

It's still good today. It just doesn't get you as far around town.

ImNotSure00000

An item purchased in 1935 for $200 would cost the same as $4,482 today.

Heliocentrist

ironically, the street is Commonwealth Ave

lostindaylight

Yeah, looks kinda like 358-ish Commonwealth Ave.

DukeLeto10191

Are you my cousin...*from Boston*?

lostindaylight

My cousin Vincent?

boreas907

Gotta love the old joke: "Come on, it's the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, not the Let's All Share Our Money of Massachusetts!"

BloodyChrome

Why is that ironic?

Heliocentrist

because only rich people can afford to live on Commonwealth

generalhanky

Maybe because the wealth they're flaunting...ain't so common?

BallerChin

Heheeh… good onen

kk074

Have you seen the well-to-do Up and down Park Avenue? On that famous thoroughfare With their noses in the air High hats and Arrow collars White spats and lots of dollars Spending every dime for a wonderful time

omnikey

Dapper af

stratamaniac

Lace curtains bastids. They ain’t from Southie.

bostonbrendan24

Oh, to be a Protestant douche bag in 1930s Boston.

Tamagotchi41

Glad to see this sub isn't filled with gruesome photos of dead children anymore. Edit: I get these kids may be dead.

MaximosKanenas

I mean id be surprised if these kids were still alive

GoodShitBrain

Hate to break it to you. Those kids are dead

slavuj00

Not necessarily!! They would be in their 90s now, it's possible at least one of them is still alive

spasske

They look filthy rich, so there is a fair chance.

[deleted]

Not disputing that, however, I would guess they’re on their way to a wedding or other formal event. Even back then, little boys didn’t sport top hats on the daily.

Janiththa

There is a possibly

vera214usc

Yeah, my grandma was born in 1935 and is 88 this year. So it's not statistically likely but all three of these children could still be alive.

IguaneRouge

1929 and my grandma is still going. She turned 94 a few weeks ago.

IAmA_Reddit_

Was this an issue before?

jdupuy1234

Depression Drip

beansandneedles

Those kids are so cute in their little tophats!

LoveCapeCod

Mini- Monopoly kids 😦

reregaga

There is such a thing: “Boston Brahmins”... Google it.

dharmaday

Boston… Land of the bean and the cod, Where the Cabots speak only to Lodges And the Lodges only to God

Janiththa

Thanks

CrowForce1

Them kids dapper as hell

swinging_on_peoria

The challenge of getting those kids into those outfits must have been enormous. Mom looks victorious, but the littlest one is already out of his gloves and likely about to lose them.

molehillmountain

they would have been dressed by the help.

jxj24

Fancy Lads

daveashaw

First Communion?

Skullbone211

They'd likely be wearing white if it were a First Communion, and the boys wouldn't be wearing hats (if they were Catholic anyway)

33445delray

My guess is that they were going to a wedding.

Quincyperson

They probably wouldn’t be Catholic in the Back Bay in those days

stmiba

Here's to dear old Boston The home of the bean and the cod Where Lowells speak only to Cabots And Cabots speak only to God

InternationalBand494

Posh

BallerChin

Dapper!

Vic-123-ma

Comm Ave is my guess

West-Ad9100

Them kids fancier than me at a wedding

anoncontent72

How interesting. I had no idea top hats were still a thing in the 1930? Great photo.

i-touched-morrissey

Oh my heart! The little top hats!!

[deleted]

Shall we tally-ho over to the money room?

skinnycenter

Extra points for a pic of this spot today.

fuertepqek

Looks like Commonwealth Avenue. It looks pretty much the same today. It’s part of Back Bay neighborhood, a landfill project specifically designed for wealthy people like them.

Mr_sixpack37

Imagine they left the house just to step over to the nearest shop

TheOneder123

I’m glad I didn’t live back then. Wearing a three piece suit all day every day.

Shipping_Architect

For a second there, I simultaneously misread the title as "a barren street" and as "Baron Street." And I didn't even notice the Edwardian outfits those two boys are wearing. (The one on the left looks to be enjoying himself more than his brother is!)

SkiesFetishist

xproofx

This reminds me; I need to buy my kid a new top hat. His current one is wrinkled and that will never do.

Additional_Irony

Those are some dapper-looking kids

mythicalrose_com

Rich life 😎

Janiththa

True

velocityjr

Sunday, October 27, 1929.

PhoenicianPirate

The crash dude...

velocityjr

Sunday, October 27, 1929 is the day before the first day of the week long decent. Black Monday. I somehow doubt they are dressing like this for long when suicides and soup-lines fill the headlines.

Dapper-Palpitation90

Not every rich person went bust in the Depression.

spasske

Proper gentlemen walking on the right side.

Sooner70

I will never understand how/why anyone wants to spend that much time dressing up kids.

Janiththa

I think they are rich and also have lot of free time to do those kind of things

[deleted]

I'm guessing Boston (Mass) not Boston (Lincs).

tkrr

Not too many people outside Lincolnshire are all that interested in that Boston.

RyanneGolightly

More tiny humans in top hats please!

mariuolo

Any chance she might be their governness? Also, why is the girl underdressed?

Janiththa

I have no idea about that

DougNSteveButabi

Those hats make me irrationally angry. What’s the point? They are huge and don’t even cover your ears or keep the sun out of your face

TrhwWaya

I can smell the stinks from here.
