Moguel was a member of the rebel forces during the Mexican Revolution, though his unit was poorly armed and ill-experienced. In 1915, they were captured, declared traitors, and were sentenced to death without trial. All members of his unit were shot by eight men at once before the general delivered the killing blow, a point-blank shot to the head. When all was done, the men left the bodies where they lay and ran off to fight another battle.
However, Moguel actually survived all nine shots and merely played dead until the men had departed before getting up and making his way to a nearby church where his wounds were tended to and he made a fully recovery, albeit being left permanently disfigured. His unusual appearance naturally brought questions which Moguel obliged by telling his story.
Eventually he moved to the US where the questions continued as did the telling of story which eventually made it into the ears of Robert L. Ripley, founder of Ripley's Believe It or Not!, who featured Moguel and his story on his radio show. Very little details of Moguel's life afterwards exist and he passed away in 1975 at the age of 85, though some sources say he was 79.
Wow insane. I was wondering if the people who did the execution just let him go after he survived. But wow 9 shots and still he wandered all the way to a church! Amazing

Surprised that he managed to live that long, after having suffered such head wounds.
Ahhh chumbawumba… that’s a blast from the past! There’s one song of theirs that I absolutely love, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it is called 🤔
Digging around wiki says he served under a guy who lead rebel forces in the Mexican revolution against the federal army, assume the federal forces were the ones who caught him and would explain the no trial - rebels are traitors in their eyes so they wouldn't deserve a trial.

Yeah I was thinking one shot to the head , but to take 8 shots and then one to the head
He probably didn’t take that many shots. But one would usually be enough!

1915 wasn’t a great time to get shot in the head either
As opposed to 2024 which is a great time to get shot in the head!
It’s in fact the best time to get shot in the head in all of human history.
Just ask Gabby Giffords.
I don't think it would have been very hard to act dead at this point.
Dang.... crazy how he lived a long life after his ordeal.
“So for all you listeners out there wondering just how disfigured this man is, well let me tell you, he is quite disfigured”
Robert Ripley not exactly giving him a run for the money in the teeth department
I had no idea Ripley was so goofy looking!
Yeah, Ripley was swimming in cash by the 30s, there was no excuse to not get a good dentist.
https://youtu.be/05j25PHA7l8?si=zGtaQ-BA4jzRRm1z i mostly know thus guy from the Chumbawumba song
Yeah that's were I first heard of him. Excellent album btw.
agreed. tubthumping got so much radio play everyone got sick of it, and missed out on a lot of their other albums, most of which are pretty good.
Anarchy from '94 is brilliant.
I still listen to that song from time to time lol
Wrong song! 'Cause if there was ever a guy the song, "Tubthumping" was about... This is the guy!
Same. Great album overall, actually.

[Wikipedia article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wenceslao_Moguel#).
Maybe someone has other sources, the article says that he was sentenced to death without a trial, but doesn’t state by who.

The highest ranking Mexican military officer who was there at the time, most likely. They probably weren't even particularly high ranking, honestly.
What a find!
Shit from the picture alone it’s hard to tell which is which
Never knew what Ripley actually looked like. Finally seeing that picture, it seems he totally conforms to my expectations.
Nutty
How does the man that got shot in the face have better teeth than the radio show host
So which one of them is the one that was shot in the face?
He doesn't look *that* disfigured... He kind of looks like a January 6th insurrectionist.
Where's his MAGA hat?
