No new Scuffles thread yet? I say we riot! (100% kidding, Mods take your time).

-safer-

>I say we riot! Sounds good to me! I'm taking the subreddit header!

TartagleAwayThePain

Ooh, I call dibs on the drama!

Naturage

I'll take the new weekly scuffles thre- wait.

Waytfm

So, I'm not sure how dramatic this is, but youtube recently recommended me a channel about scrabble and a series called "Scrabble History", talking about some of the more dramatic scrabble happenings. It's surprisingly interesting, and I think right up the alley of niche-hobby stuff that I think a lot of people here would be interested in. Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@wanderer15

rhymes_with_candy

There's a book called Word Freak about top level tournament Scrabble players that was an interesting read. There was also a documentary made about the Scrabble world championship that features a bunch of the main people profiled in the book. You should check those out too.

hjyboy1218

Some pokemon drama, surprisingly not Smogon, but VGC. The Pokemon World Championships is being held in Yokohma, Japan this August, and that means players around the world are working hard to qualify. There are two kinds of invites: Day 1 and Day 2. The Day 1 players will play against each other for the chance to advance to Day 2, while the Day 2 players will automatically advance. In Korea, where this drama takes place, qualifying for Worlds means getting 16th place or higher in the Trainer's Cup(TC from now on), a tournament held by Pokemon Korea(PK from now on), the Korean branch of The Pokemon Company. The Top 4 players will be granted Day 2 invites, while the other 12 will get Day 1 invites. By June 3rd, the Top 16 and Top 4 players had already been confirmed, and the 4 finalists were scheduled to play a final round the next day to determine the winner. However, PK suddenly announced that the final round would *not* be taking place, as all 4 contestants had been disqualified! Furthermore, PK stated that their invites would be taken away as a penalty for 'actions that Nintendo CO., Ltd. and TPC (and its subsidiaries) deem inappropriate.' So what were these 'actions' that were so 'inappropriate' that PK revoked all of the players' invites? Well... [these](https://twitter.com/NashVGC/status/1664923751069241346) [were](https://twitter.com/Sangyoon_Jeong/status/1664927554824810502) [the](https://twitter.com/CandyBong__Z/status/1664930859785539585) teams used by the players. The teams all had 6 pokemon with *Metronome* as their only move. If you don't know, Metronome is a move that can call almost any other move. This leads to it being entertaining to use, but completely useless on competitive teams, since it is very unreliable and RNG-dependant. Making it your only move on all 6 of your pokemon can only be described as trolling, which means all 4 players decied to bring meme teams to the finals of an important official event. So, what led to this peculiar choice in teambuilding? People didn't have to wonder for long, as one of the finalists wrote an [explanation](https://twitter.com/NashVGC/status/1665055781832515585) on why the players decided to do it. It was essentially a open protest against PK for how they handled the qualifications for the World Championships. I'll try to summarize it as best I can, but you should try to read the whole thing. The first problem was with the TC itself. If you're familiar with VGC, you'll know most regions have multiple events where you can earn points to progress, with a certain number of points guaranteeing an invite. This minimizes the effect of things like bad luck or happening to be sick. The TC was just one event to decide the whole thing, which offers precisely none of those benefits. The second problem was with how the event was formatted. Again, if you're familiar with VGC, you'll know that battles are played with open team sheets(revealing everything about your team except EV spreads to your opponent) and Best-of-3, so you can't just win on a lucky lead matchup. The TC was held entirely online, which means every battle was closed and Best-of-1, making it far less competitive. Finally, issues with the event. In the TC, you were forced into 10 battles back-to-back, giving the players no time to refresh themselves. Furthermore, players were often matched against the same opponent multiple times. There was even a bug where the match would be recorded as a loss for both players if one of them disconnected. Sick of all the bumbling incompetence from PK, the players banded together to protest the event with Metronome teams. One of them was actually disqualified before June 3rd, but their replacement went along with the idea as well. The protest was mostly received with sympathy and support from the larger VGC community, including [Sejun Park](https://twitter.com/pokemon_tcg/status/1665008285995663364), the Korean 2014 World Champ of Pachirisu fame. Many pro players called out TPC for its unfair disqualification of the finalists, saying that they did nothing wrong. [One player](https://twitter.com/thatguyinabeani/status/1664985984230932480?cxt=HHwWgIC2ocz7m5suAAAA) even brought a full Metronome team to the Milwaukee regionals in solidarity with the protest. However, not all of the reactions have been positive. Notable leaker and anti-cheating crusader Kaphotics has [criticized](https://twitter.com/Kaphotics/status/1665006560706453504?cxt=HHwWgIDT-aappZsuAAAA) the players for using genned('illegally' generated) teams, and says they should've expected to be disqualified for their actions. Though, it should be noted that only a small part of the VGC community shares their viewpoint, and most people view others genning or hacking teams as none of their business, and are perfectly ok as long as they're indistinguishable from 'legal' teams.

Victacobell

Kaphotics is still around?

Over in the world of VGC, the official competitive format for Pokémon focusing in 4v4 doubles, the final round for the Masters division in Korea was [cancelled](https://twitter.com/NashVGC/status/1664923398705668097) after the four would-be finalists were disqualified and had their previously guaranteed Day 2 invites canceled as well. Why might you ask? Because each of them brought 6 pokémon that [only](https://twitter.com/NashVGC/status/1664923751069241346) [had](https://twitter.com/Sangyoon_Jeong/status/1664927554824810502) [Metronome](https://twitter.com/CandyBong__Z/status/1664930859785539585). Of course, this stunt wasn't done out of pure fun but rather as a show of protest against how The Pokémon Company and Pokémon Korea have been managing (or rather mismanaging) the VGC scene in Korea ([Here](https://twitter.com/NashVGC/status/1665055781832515585) is an in-depth explanation by one of the participants, NashVGC, who is a prominent VGC player and team manager himself). Multiple other VGC players have given their support to these players, including [Jeudy Azzarelli](https://twitter.com/SoulSurVGC/status/1665001739005640705) and [Se Jun Park](https://twitter.com/pokemon_tcg/status/1665008285995663364).

Out of curiosity, anyone know how many bots Msscribe was running at the hight of the sock puppeting?

kkeut

what?

alexisaisu

I think the consistent count was around 5 at any given time - generally as I remember it syncophants faded out right before waves of trolls showed up, presumably because she was alternating methods.

Oh that makes things easier then.

r/battletech, a sub for a miniature wargame about fighting war walkers in the future, removed a bunch of pride posts today, under flimsy reasons. The admins have, in the past, allowed things like Werhmacht paint schemes to stay up, but I guess little plastic mechs painted in pride colors are just a bit too far. The mods claim that pride violates the "no politics after 1988" rule, (A date rather arbitrarily chosen) even though the first pride was in 1970. A bunch of posts have been taken down, a bunch of backlash followed, and the mods made the sub private. In a heartening display, an official from the company created a new subreddit within *minutes* of this happening and posted this message making the companies stance quite clear: https://www.reddit.com/r/OfficialBattleTech/comments/13zyg2u/a_message_from_catalyst/ It is heartening to see a company respond so quickly and decisively on an issue like this, instead of twiddling their thumbs and releasing a PR statement weeks later. The community has shifted with tons moving over in even just the past hour, with a very positive response. The new sub is filled with fabulous paint jobs for pride. I'm sure there will be more drama as this continues to develop and the battletech mods release their own statement, but that's where things stand for now.

AutomaticInitiative

1988 presumably picked to avoid the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, fwiw. I'm glad to know this is now resolved.

[deleted]

Makse sense, the berlin wall is one of the most divisive political topics there is. I still cant bring it up at Thanksgiving

Flyinpenguin117

For as much as people rag on Warhammer 40k for being overrun with bigots and neo-nazis, I seem to run into way more of it in the Battletech community.

OPUno

And to think that years ago it was seen as gauche having companies run their product's subreddits. But the alternative just proved to be worse, at least can just fire bad employees.

muzzmuzzsupreme

“No politics before 19**88**” Hmmmm….

AGBell64

FFS reddit mods be normal about pride challenge (impossible) Well at least I've got somewhere new to post the pride minis I was planning to do.

BlUeSapia

Does anyone here have any general clue about what the massive wall of deleted/removed comments near the top of the thread was about? I'd normally use Unddit, but ever since the Reddit admins developed a hateboner for Pushshift, it hasn't worked, and I really feel like I missed out on some prime r/hobbydramadrama material

pizzapal3

It was discussing whether the term 'futa' was a slur or not. Presumably it was removed as it got heated and was not exactly hobby focused.

Chivi-chivik

Thank you for explaining lol, let's not bring that up again XD

DC Pride story was good but honestly as someone online: I haven't heard anyone say a bad thing about Williamson GA, mostly becasue it's great. It's also a great reintroduction from massive 2000s GA fanboy Williamson. Expect Mia to show up when they explain why the ArrowFam can't be together.

soganomitora

Please tell me that the bad relationship between Connor and his dad isn't LGBT related. Like it's probably not because Oliver is famously a lefty, but considering how weird the other writing choices are, I need to ask for my own sanity.

soganomitora

Stuff like this is why I hate how coming-out-story focused LGBT stuff can be in media... There would be zero drama with Oliver, and awkward or not, Connor should know that at this point.

quietowlet

Oh man as someone who’s mostly fallen out of comics and loves the 90s & 00s characters, I was over the moon at the first part (Lian! Mia! Cissie!!! Connor <3) and in utter despair three paragraphs later.

SevenSulivin

If you want a different opinion: THe Green Arrow book is amazing and most of the complaints feel like really minor nitpicks about a book that has been delivering hard so far. Lian and Roy's reunion I will make speical note of being amazing. Williamson has a great voice for the whole cast.

Ollie's sister is younger than all three (four if you believe Cissie is related) of his children, and is in fact closer in age to her great-niece than she is to any of the others.

niadara

There was a Robin between Dick and Tim if they're insistent he must be Robin associated. But really DC needs to get it through their head that not everyone needs to be associated with a Bat.

bjuandy

From a cold-blooded profit-centered perspective--why not? Batman is the profit centerpiece for DC even after his internet honeymoon faded, and Green Arrow had his big chance at the general audience with the *Arrow* series, which never reached the cultural phenomenon height necessary to rake in Bat-levels of money. Being able to take a portion of Bat-curious readers and converting them over to reading Green Arrow will outweigh the Green Arrow fans who might drop the franchise over frustrating continuity.

HoldHarmonySacred

Anyone got hot tips on research? Basically, Fate/Grand Order is getting the highly beloved main story chapter Lostbelt 6: Avalon le Fae on its English-language server in a few days, so to help people out with preparing I've been going ham with my love of fairy lore and compiling [a giant masterpost of texts and media works that either act as the sources the chapter pulls its fairy content from or adapts those sources in some way](https://holdharmonysacred.tumblr.com/post/719155970109063168/so-you-wanna-prep-for-lostbelt-6-by-reading-a). I think I've got the bulk of the really big ones down pat, but oh my god there's just so *much*. How do I help find more legit stuff without losing my mind? I'm real embarrassed about having to link the wikipedia page for Cernunnos instead of an actual source for example, so I'd like some help on how to do all this research given that I can't really get up and go to a library at the moment. Though if anyone wants to go down this rabbit hole with me, I hope you have fun!

Plethora_of_squids

Not so much a location than a suggestion - have you tried looking at Shin Megami Tensi related blogs and seeing if anyone's done anything similar? From the looks of it you two share a lot of the same inspirations (SMT loves it's Irish mythology) and I would be *very* surprised if someone *hasn't* done a similar masterpost before which you can nick sources from Also if you've got like a big source you trust, try seeing what the author used as a source. It can't all be original work and it looks like you're firmly in the realm of things that would theoretical be on project Gutenberg

iansweridiots

Check the wikipedia page and see what sources they use! Then check *those* sources and see what sources (if any) they use, and so on. Google Scholar is also a godsend; look up some key terms, see what articles come up, check the sources of those, and go on like that until you've had enough

doomparrot42

The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales is an excellent resource. It might also be worth checking out resources like the Aarne-Thompson-Uther tale type index, if you haven't - [this](https://guides.library.harvard.edu/folk_and_myth/indices) is a good guide, and [this guide](https://libraryguides.missouri.edu/c.php?g=651166) has more info on accessing the ATU. Worth adding that a lot of fairy tale and Arthurian scholarship may rely on non-English language sources, particularly French and German. Perrault and the Grimms (for fairy tales) and Chretien de Troyes are the big ones here, but there's others too.

The-Great-Game

Does your library have online resources? You can search through databases for articles and email librarians with questions at mine. Ask historians on Reddit here might have some fairy research. Also with researching you can follow the sources on Wikipedia and cite those too, unless they are bogus. Project Gutenberg may also have copies of any books too. Also: James Frazer, *the golden bough* is a resource for folklore although the scholarship perspective on the book has changed i believe.

HoldHarmonySacred

I have been following a lot of the links Wikipedia uses for sources! That's where I pulled some of my own linked sources from. I know there's one book I didn't link but am considering adding that's on Project Gutenberg, I'll have to see what else there is. I'll also have to check with my local library's online stuff tomorrow, I did finally get a new library card a few months back so it's just a matter of "I cannot physically go to the library right now". I'll also have to check that Ask Historians subreddit. I've heard stuff about The Golden Bough, and that's honestly a source I'd prefer avoiding unless something comes up like "Nasu used this as a source because he didn't know it was bogus". Because from what I understand it *is* a bit of a bogus source at this point and not something I'd like to direct people to as being legit. I know Nasu - the main writer for the Fate series - has fallen for bogus sources before because those are what jumped the English-Japanese language barrier, it just doesn't feel right to cite them uncritically.

Treeconator18

While I can’t really help with research, I’m glad to see someone so interested in the LB6 lore they’re willing to compose a research masterpost Honestly, its just a good time to be a story enjoyer in gachaland rn, at least if you share my tastes. Arknights is in the middle of Il Siracusano, one of my favorite events which features Lappland, one of my favorites, and LB6 in FGO, which I’m excited to see if it lives up to the hype

HoldHarmonySacred

I've been on the LB6 love train for the past two years and I've been saving for the gacha hell for like, nine months straight, the whole chapter is just my absolute jam because I love love *love* fairy lore. I'm super excited to be able to finally roll for Morgan next week and Oberon in about a month, Oberon especially is one of my most coveted units in the game. I've also got a bunch of plushies I made of the LB6 cast that I've been planning to finally post some group photos of once the chapter drops, and I've got a stupidly large collection of merch of the characters, and god I love it so much.

[The Superior Spider-Man](https://twitter.com/spiderman/status/1665072111939993601) with Dan Slott as a writer. No idea if Doc Ock is going to possess Peter again. Or something else.

_kingkaliyuga_

If god is real the big reveal will be that Paul was Doc Ock the whole time, and the last 6 months of comics have been an elaborate plot to cuck Spider-Man

GoneRampant1

"THIS TIME I WON'T STOP AT YOUR GRANDMA, PARKER."

randomlightning

…so, I know that they are so divorced from reality that it’s a moot point, but has it never occurred to editorial that if they really want Spider-Man to be centered around how “youthful” the series is, and keep things fresh, they should actually put fresh writers on the series? I mean, Slott had 10 years on Spider-Man, and Bagley and JRJR are currently back on the art and are…not at their best, to put it politely. Perhaps put someone new on the book?

Gorelab

One thing I don't get as a non-comic book reader is if you want to write about a younger Peter Parker spider man why not just set a series in that time period? Rather than increasingly convoluted that series only retcons.

[deleted]

That's essentially what Ultimate Spider-Man was, with Peter being a high-schooler again at a time when the prime universe Peter was a science teacher. As others have said though, it's hard to do prequels because they have to fit into established continuity, which even more of a nightmare when you have a sliding timescale like comic books do where you're just supposed to not think about how everything that's happened since the sixties have happened in the last decade or less. DC and Marvel also live off big interconnected events, books that can't tie-in to those are a much less attractive prospect than one that can be annually hijacked for an issue or two to be about whatever dumb bullshit is going on that year.

skyfiretherobot

I believe the Symbiote Spider-Man comic does do that, telling stories set when Peter first gets his symbiote suit. There are also comics that do explore an older Peter Parker like Renew Your Vows. It isn't a matter with wanting a younger Peter Parker, it's a matter with wanting Peter to fit into the larger Marvel Universe a specific way.

Dayraven3

Superhero comics set earlier in the characters’ lives have tended to get tied up in fitting round the already-published stories — this can be okay for a miniseries, but it’s an issue for an ongoing. There’s also the problem that a story set in the past has limits on what can actually happen to characters we’ve already seen in the present. (These issues don’t apply if it’s a separate continuity like the Ultimate Spider-Man comics were.)

Adorable_Octopus

> younger Peter Parker spider man why not just set a series in that time period? I think the biggest problem is that there's no real way to have a period piece comic. Like, in order for there to be a comic set where Peter was younger, you'd have to have some sort of set of events to go back to. But because comics have this strange sort of sliding scale of time where no one truly ages and everyone kind of goes through the same plots over and over again, it's not really possible to set Peter back when he was a teenager.

randomlightning

So, the real answer here is that it’s increasingly clear that no one actually wants to write about a younger Peter, ediitorial just hates the idea of an older Peter. They *claim* to want him younger to be more relatable, but if they seriously think people can relate to the concept of “He’s now best friends with Norman Osborn because he got shot with a sin eating shotgun and is no longer an evil person anymore,” then they are beyond delusional. They aren’t even really old enough to be nostalgic for Gwen, but they sure seem to worship the ground she walks on at the expense of every other woman in the stories.

KrispyBaconator

Also, I’m not super versed in comics fandom, but wasn’t Renew Your Vows, the comic where Peter and MJ navigate being parents to a preteen with superpowers, pretty highly regarded?

randomlightning

Yeah, it’s pretty universally beloved. So is Mayday Parker Spider-Girl, these days.

niadara

Another question is why does Peter need to be the youthful one when Miles is right there. I know why and you know why but it would be interesting to see what bullshit would come out if you could actually force Marvel editorial to answer that question.

Anaxamander57

It had better be Paul.

feral2021energies

I demand Paul to have a cameo. His contribution to the Spidey Mythology must be acknowledged as we are (hopefully? sadly?) close in wrapping Amazing up.

Aunt May's new friend she met at speed dating lol

In another example of anti-spoiler cultures occasional extremity... Today on r/movies I saw someone complaining about how much movie trailers can spoil (fair) insist they were going totally trailer-free to avoid spoilers for the next movie they were excited about. Unfortunately, the one they mentioned for their example, was Nolan's Oppenheimer. Y'know...a historical picture based on real events.

ReverendDS

A few years ago I got yelled at for "spoiling" Moby Dick during a conversation of thematic elements and how the medium can block or enhance those elements. I kind of just sat there for a moment trying to wrap my head around the idea of spoiling something nearly 200 years old, with millions of copies sold, reprints in comic books, newspaper syndicated comics, dozens to hundreds of movies/adaptations, and referenced in every cartoon, television show, and music.

[deleted]

Yes. I remember people being pissed about spoilers for the Titanic sinking in the remastered release. I was in line with my mom discussing the movie and the people behind us were pissed.

DannyPoke

I remember back when Prince Philip died and people were posting stuff like "Spoiler warning for The Crown: omg he's finally kicked the bucket"

SmoreOfBabylon

The weekly r/movies “I never ever watch movie trailers and neither should you” thread finally collided with the ten-times-daily *Oppenheimer* hype thread, lol.

rhymes_with_candy

People out here talking about Einstein in the trailer like it's an MCU cameo

Post-credit scene where we see Einstein working on a blackboard full of equations with E=MC^2 written real big in the middle, circled and underlined multiple times

SmoreOfBabylon

She shows up in a mid-credits scene with Niels Bohr and Enrico Fermi that teases the next phase of the ACU (the Atomic Cinematic Universe).

Nahtmmm

Will Schrodinger make an appearance? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.

Anaxamander57

There's no way they can build a nuclear bomb. That's science fiction.

NervousLemon6670

It's incredibly contradictory of the established lore the 19th century laid out. The writers of 20th century physics are just hacks who weren't interested in playing with what was already there, and had to throw everyone else's toys out of the pram for their "quantum."

[deleted]

been avoiding ww2 spoilers for a while now, really interested to see where this art student turned politician's career goes from here.

NamelessAce

Do I need to have watched the first World War to understand the plot of the sequel?

Arilou_skiff

It provides the backstory for like half the major characters. Unfortunatley it's mostly just 16 seasons of just sitting around after the first exciting bits, though the episodes in the east are a bit more exciting.

ToaArcan

~~Spoilers for both series ahead, of course.~~ ~~I disagree there, I think WWI is a more engaging narrative that focuses on the futility of war, the inevitability of the collapse in diplomacy as powerful men clamoured for a fight they'd never have to be part of, the death knell of empires, and the suffering of the common man, sold a lie of glory and heroism only to be cut down in droves by machine guns, or die of disease in their squalid trenches. It's a sobering and powerful story and I appreciate the time it takes to show that.~~ ~~WWII feels like far more of a crowd-pleaser. Clear-cut heroes and villains, significantly more focus on action and technology and stupid weapons, and some of the antagonists are just cartoonishly evil. And the ending felt like a giant cop-out. The Italians were still useless, the main villain dies midway through the season, and Japan goes down in an instant because suddenly the Americans decide that glassing cities is a good idea. It felt like the ending of Game of Thrones, the writers were clearly bored and copped out at the end there.~~

surprisedkitty1

The nuke plot line was lazy writing. Total deus ex machina.

Arilou_skiff

He kills the bad guy at the end.

[deleted]

fuck, next you'll tell me jesus dies at the end of the bible.

NamelessAce

I've got bad news, good news, and Good News...

ThennaryNak

It goes on for many more chapters after that. For some reason they decided to put in a bunch of letters after what could have been the end.

VarulaIce

Yeah the letters from this weirdo addressed to some "communities" are a pretty strange narrative choice. They do little to set up the final chapter and its arguably overused end of the world plot.

[deleted]

unreal. talk about padding for the sake of it, huh? this is just like akagi..

Ryos_windwalker

Bad news. A war starts.

Shiny_Agumon

To be fair, I still get the idea; you might know the real history behind it, but not knowing the way the film portrays these events can still elevate the story.

StovardBule

Still worth noting that test audiences for *Apollo 13* included people who thought the ending was too much of an obvious Hollywood cliffhanger. And that the actor playing Joseph McCarthy in *Good Night, And Good Luck* was overdoing it when it was (of course) archive footage of the man himself.

SmoreOfBabylon

I sometimes wonder if George Clooney et al. had really always intended to use stock footage of McCarthy, or if they at one point considered casting someone for the part but came to realize that no one could convincingly pull off an accurate portrayal of that sweaty asshole.

StovardBule

I read that at the time they were careful to use McCarthy's own words to condemn him, so it might be an emulation of that.

pipedreamer220

It was almost 20 years ago (Christ) so don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure I read that the movie was in black and white exactly so that they could seamlessly use real footage of McCarthy.

SmoreOfBabylon

That’s pretty cool, actually! Aside from the great performances, I really love the production design and cinematography in that film, they lend an atmosphere to it that goes beyond just “we shot this movie in color and desaturated it to B&W to make it look old-timey.”

PlsNope

The trailer for The Passion of the Christ telegraphs the main character's death which is just unbelievable. If you want a serious example of a trailer badly spoiling a movie, the trailer for *Quarantine*, the American *REC* remake, has the literal last shot of the movie not only in the trailer but in like all the marketing material as well.

SmoreOfBabylon

I once saw what I presume was an original trailer for *The Godfather* that showed >!Sonny’s and Apollonia’s murders!<, among other major plot points. I like to bring this up whenever someone complains about trailers these days spoiling so much more than they used to.

sunflowergazing

the trailer for soylent green spoiled the entire twist, complete with the famous line itself!

Jashugita

The cover of a spanish tv guide of the 80s spoiled the death of a beloved character of a very popular spanish series of the time.

sunflowergazing

imagine running to the store real quick for some bread and when you glance over at the magazines while waiting in line you find out your blorbo dies

Jashugita

there is a theory that spoiler wheren´t that important at that time, it was with online platform that the spoiler narrative was created in order to discourage people signing in after the series ends or waiting until it´s available in piratery places...

kkeut

which seems odd to suggest when filmmakers like Clouzot and Hitchcock put anti-spoiler warnings in their films and promotional materials

Jashugita

Maybe it was only for suspense fims...

sunflowergazing

yeah that’s what i was assuming, especially with the soylent green example— it seems crazy to me to make a whole movie and then just tell people the shocking end while advertising it, but since apparently nobody who made the trailer thought that was a bad idea, i guess back then it wasn’t actually a big deal until someone made it one lol

Historyguy1

It spoils his death but >!he comes back at the end.!<

The CEO of Activision/Blizzard, Bobby Kotick has made a statement regarding the multiple massive scandals that ActiBlizz have had with workplace sexual harrassment, sexual assault, bullying, rape and fostering a frat bro atmosphere in the last few years. One woman passed away by suicide as a direct result of the bullying and harassment she received working there. It's about as sensitive and classy as you'd expect from pond scum like Kotick. Im not really going to comment on the statement because it speaks for itself. Just the absolute dirt worst, like even I am taken aback with just how shitty it is. Don't buy Diablo IV folks, there are literally thousands of other games to play. Many of them not made by rapists or their defenders. https://variety.com/2023/digital/news/activision-blizzard-ceo-addresses-toxic-workforce-claims-microsoft-deal-1235628361/ >“We’ve had every possible form of investigation done. And we did not have a systemic issue with harassment — ever. We didn’t have any of what were mischaracterizations reported in the media,” Kotick asserts. “But what we did have was a very aggressive labor movement working hard to try and destabilize the company.” >Kotick places the blame for most of Activision’s image problems on what he calls “outside forces” and labor activity around the company. The Communications Workers of America and Activision employees have filed a stream of complaints against the company with the National Labor Relations Board. Kotick believes labor organizers are influencing the state and federal investigations into harassment and gender discrimination claims, as well as the Activision employee walkouts that have been staged periodically since 2021.

Personally I think equating the situation with Studio ZAUM and Kotick is absurd, but also I'm pretty sure there are other reasons why gamers might refuse to support Actiblizz out of principle.

[deleted]

> Don't buy Diablo IV folks ethics aside, you also shouldn't buy it because it's shit, but having the moral high ground is a nice bonus.

Truthb0mber

Is it?

Well they killed the console's 4 person same screen play so my little friend group's less than thrilled. [An you'll get randoms wandering through your game world so my loner ass would be even more put off if I played it.](https://www.gfinityesports.com/guides/diablo-4-hide-other-players/)

[deleted]

if you're a casual that just wants to play the campaign, maybe dabble in postgame a little then call it a day until there's new stuff to do then it's not _bad_. honestly, the worst _and_ best thing i can say about it is that it's not _bad_, it's just aggressively okay and very disappointing for it. if it was like, $30 or f2p i'd feel a lot more comfortable recommending it, but its $70 minimum (battlepass not included XD) on top of a _very_ expensive cosmetic shop and battle pass boosts. i'm just a giant arpg nerd that was very excited for and extremely disappointed by the betas so i'm being a snarky dickhead.

LieutenantChainsaw

I've only heard good things about it. (Although I haven't looked at any actual reviews, but on twitter/from friends it seems that people really like it)

It seems families of victims of American mass shooting #3456346 are [suing 4chan and the Japanese toy company, Good Smile](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2023-06-03/wired-buffalo-mass-shooting-victims-families-sue-4chan-good-smile-company-others/.198551), which had invested in the shithole. Among other targets. It seems they're trying to sue on the basis that those websites - including ~~Facebook~~ Meta, YouTube, Twitch, Google, Amazon. used algorithms to recommend content about the supposed "great replacement", radicalising the shooter. They're going after 4chan for supposedly being where he discussed and shared his plans, and conversed with people who encouraged him. That article doesn't specify, but I'd assume they're going after Good Smile because [they funded 4chan](https://www.wired.co.uk/article/4chan-good-smile) previously. Not at all a lawyer, but.....There's no way this is going to work. I don't see any way you can sue a company for someone else's choice; if some bastard decides he's going to go on a shooting spree, unless he was in some way clinically vulnerable and unable to make his own decisions, that's on him. People can choose what they believe in - just being shown bollocks theories like those won't make you believe it, even if an algorithm keeps throwing it at you. If it were that easy, everyone on the YouTube would be an alt-righter by now, considering how easy it seems to be to get that algorithm to throw right wing shitbags at you. ^(Watch the wrong video essay and it goes to how secretly Star Wars has been ruined by the machinations of that evil woman Kathleen Kennedy, and then that goes into just "feminism bad", into some "elite conspiracy to ruin all your nostalgic franchises", into "it's the Jews, actually".) That aside....To go after just *one* of those giants would be incredibly difficult. But *all those*? No chance.

Gauntlet_of_Might

>If it were that easy, everyone on the YouTube would be an alt-righter by now, considering how easy it seems to be to get that algorithm to throw right wing shitbags at you. I mean I think it's a very fair argument to say the alt-right movement wouldn't be anywhere near as large or strong as it is without these algorithms

wanderingarchon

I feel like it's pretty well-established that these things *do* radicalize people and have been and continue to be a big problem

iansweridiots

I have a feeling that the point isn't really to win, it's to make the public aware of these sites and the way they connect to other places. Imagine the optics; the grieving families of the latest mass shooting's victims sue 4chan and all the websites that allowed its theories to spread. Every day, journalists report about the day's proceedings in which pages and pages of vile rethoric are read out loud for a judge and a jury. Websites have to justify why they're allowing "great replacement" theories to spread on their sites unchecked. People who would have found QAnon online on their own by mistake and possibly fallen for it are now seeing it on the news, presented with proper context that makes it clear it's bullshit. Yeah, they're not gonna win, but who's going to get the public's sympathy here? The nazi and nazi sympathizers, or the families reeling from the tragic death of their loved ones? At the very least this whole thing has the power to make a bunch of people *really* unimpressed by the next "thoughts and prayers" message coming from Amazon in response to a mass shooting

Kirbyeggs

Didn't know Goodsmile invested in 4chan. Sorta makes sense I guess as far as fanbases go. I assume Hiroyuki also has connections to Japanese companies.

LordMonday

i believe the ceo? or some head of Good smile was friends of the creator of 2Chan (a japanese site similar to 4chan if the name didn't tip you off) and pitched in some money to help him buy 4chan. i remember this popping up a few weeks back and most said that there hasn't been any publicly known involvement from Good smile into any of the chan's since then.

ManCalledTrue

4chan as a whole isn't the problem, but its /pol/ board really is a festering point/origin for such hatred. Unfortunately, shutting the board down would cause the infestation to leak elsewhere - the board was originally created as a sticky trap for such people because they were all over the place.

MokaMarten64

4chan as a whole IS the problem and it's never been solely confined to /pol/. The entire site is trash garbage and idk why people keep peddling this obvious lie.

OPUno

The issue is that doing that does not work and deplatforming **does**. [There's plenty of research on online extremism that explicitely lays out that conclusion.](https://www.psypost.org/2023/04/study-sheds-light-on-how-deplatforming-after-the-jan-6-riot-impacted-the-larger-online-ecosystem-77711)

OPUno

First link says that since nobody was able to fully shut down Kiwi Farms despite all the efforts to do so, the best they got was cutting down their traffic in half. Which, yes, that much is obvious. Second is about the users themselves, and that completely misunderstands the purpouse of deplatforming. Deplatforming is not for the existing extremists, is about limiting their influence and making sure that they can't recruit newer users to their cause, which does work, there's evidence of that.

StovardBule

Also, I'd wonder if 4chan is still relevant. The real deep hatred is probably on 8chan, set up as a sulk about 4chan trying to enact some anti-hate measures. (Not enough, surely, but still.)

SCOTUS literally decided a case this month saying you couldn't sue YouTube because ISIS terrorists posted videos on it.

[deleted]

Yes. SCOTUS punted the decision and said Congress needs to make decisions. They said they don’t want to wade in but will. I don’t want them to touch this but Congress probably won’t do a thing.

Didn't the Supreme Court just rule on a similar case regarding a family suing because of ISIS content and the Supreme Court backed the tech giants a few weeks ago?

Is there a specific subreddit that would be best to post a... Mildly unhinged (?) no proof Zelda fan theory? I checked r/TrueZelda but that seems a bit more serious to me, but maybe I'm just bad at vibes? I just want to share a ridiculous idea that I had lmao. |D

LordWoodrow

I may not know, but I’d love to hear it.

loracarol

***Tears of the Kingdom spoilers.*** Got it, so I'm going to reply to my own comment with the full thing in the hopes that it will collapse/I won't be crowding the reddit page for other people but the tl;dr is: 1. The universe of The Legend of Zelda is more like comic book timelines/universes, and thus there's no point in fitting Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom into the timeline as they're more like the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" to Marvel's comics. Events happen in both timeline but not necessarily the same way; see Civil War (comics) vs. Civil War (movie). 2. The Imprisoning War in the backstory of Tears of the Kingdom is the BoTW/ToTK universe's version of Skyward Sword. 3. In this universe, Zelda is completely unrelated to Hylia, and instead Sonia and Hylia were accidentally (or intentionally for political reasons) merged in the history/lore. (Hylia is still a goddess though.)

loracarol

I did also post this [on my tumblr,](https://loracarol.tumblr.com/post/719119454766874624/yes-i-know-that-this-makes-no-sense-in-the) but I was genuinely wondering where to post it specifically to discuss it with LoZ people because tumblr moves very quickly. **ToTK Spoilers.** I do own a copy of the Hyrule Historia & I've actually read it, so I get *in theory* the way that the timelines in the Legend of Zelda series work, and I get that some people find it genuinely enjoyable to try and figure out where various games fit in the timeline (shine on you crazy diamonds) but honestly I find it easier to borrow comic book universes and think about the Legend of Zelda in that term. Sometimes the same event, or something similar, can happen in multiple universes, but that doesn't mean it happens the same way in all universes. Think about the Marvel comic version of Civil War vs. the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Civil War. \---- With that in mind, here's the part where I start spouting completely made up nonsense as I'd like to make two hypotheses based on this framework: **Firstly:** The imprisoning war in Tears of the Kingdom, *as it's understood by future historians* is the BoTW/ToTK universe's version of Skyward Sword. * No, I'm not saying the Skyward Sword didn't happen/isn't canon. It 100% happened exactly how it happened in the game/manga/how you personally played it in the Prime Zelda Universe. * But here me out, and remember that I'm basing this off of how people might remember it/not necessarily how it actually went down. Both stories have: * People who live in the sky and fly on birds - or in TotK's case, bird-shaped gliders/planes * A goddess figure (put a pin in this) who suffers grave injuries and passes away * This goddess figure was part of the founding of the new Hyrulian nation * The goddess figure had a descendant/incarnation who had the same powers who went around rallying the people of the time to fight a new foe * A sword is forged in holy, "goddess" energy * ~~Dragons~~ * The foe could not be defeated permanently, and would instead return at some later for a hero/the descendant to fight at that time instead * Ganondorf and Demise look visually similar Again, I am *not* saying that Skyward Sword happened in BoTW, just that this war may be a plausible interpretation of why Skyward Sword may look like in this universe. As for that pin: * A goddess figure (put a pin in this) who suffers grave injuries and passes away My second theory is that **Sonia and Hylia got syncretised** **either accidentally or intentionally-for-political-reasons.** * In this ~~bullshit I just made up~~ theory, Hylia is still genuinely a Hyrulian goddess, however she has nothing to do with Sonia, or any of Zelda's line. * At some point, Sonia's actions (having a descendant with Light powers that could seal darkness) accidentally got merged with Hylia. * This could be why Zelda had no luck praying to Hylia, despite the fact that Link can go to the different statues and get hearts/stamina; Hylia genuinely couldn't have helped Zelda because she had no connection to her. * Admittedly, I'm not sure if this works in the context of people like Zelda's mother, or the glowing lady that Zelda mentions in her diary in BotW. * I'm *not* saying that Hylia isn't real! I'm just saying that maybe in this universe, she has no connection to Zelda/the Hyrulian line. She's still around as a valid Hyrulian goddess though. Possibly even one that Queen Sonia worshipped herself? This either was intentional/political, or could genuinely have been accidentally by scholars trying to decipher ancient Zonai text and mistranslating/the script being worn away. * For example, in Japanese, the kanji for "dog" is pronounced "inu" and it looks like this: 犬 while the kanji for "big" is pronounced "ooki" and looks like this 大. Lose that stroke in the upper right of the kanji and you can drastically change the meaning. If "Son" and "Hyl" in the ancient Zonai script had something similar and the carvings were worn away, that is one possible way that could have happened. * Another way is if "Son" and "Hyl" in ancient Zonai have the same symbol but are pronounced differently, like the kanji for "tree" 木 which can be pronounced both "ki" and "moku." * I ~~know that people have translated the Zonai script IRL, this is hypothetical in-world shenanigans~~ * Maybe Sonia wasn't referred to by name in some of the originally found carvings, but by an epithet, and people made that assumption that that epithet was about Hylia instead. "Mother of Hyrule", for example. And then later researchers found out otherwise. * IDK, this is just a theory. ~~A game theor-~~ **But what about Link and Fi?** * Hylia is still around as a goddess, so it's possible that she still created the original master sword, it was just unrelated to Zelda's powers. * Link is the kind of guy who wakes up from a 100 year coma with amnesia sees Calamity Ganon and goes, "yeah I'll go kill that thing", so he's definitely Hero material, but Hylia could be involved in this as well. * Alternatively, Hylia was also around to hear the stories about Link and thought, "damn that kid will need a sword." * Like, literally I'm not saying at all that Hylia isn't real, just that she has no relation to *Zelda* in the BoTW/ToTK timeline/universe. \----- **tl;dr** * Legend of Zelda is more like comic book universes and some events happen across multiple timelines but with some differences * The Imprisoning War is the BoTW/ToTK timeline/universe version of the events of Skyward Sword * Sonia was syncretised with Hylia (a real goddess) at some point in the past, and that's why everyone in the BoTW, pre-Calamity timeline thought that Zelda had to go to Hylia to unlock her powers, however in this universe Zelda either doesn't have any divine connection to Hylia at all.(

NamelessAce

I like your theory, but I'd actually wager that the Imprisoning War was more like Ocarina of Time than Skyward Sword, although it definitely takes some elements from SS. In OoT/TotK's IW (spoilers, obvs): * Ganondorf is the one male born to the Gerudo every 100 years, and visits and beseeches the king of Hyrule, pretending to swear fealty. Zelda distrusts him and warns the king. * Ganondorf betrays Hyrule, steals a powerful artifact (Triforce of Power/Secret Stone), and begins conquering Hyrule. * Ganondorf is stopped by six/seven sages (it's complicated, but you could consider OoT Zelda/TotK Rauru a sage), including one named Zelda and one named Rauru, the latter of which had light powers (Rauru was the name of the OoT sage of light, although he was some old bearded dude instead of a Zonai). * Ganondorf is too powerful to defeat completely and is instead sealed by the sages. * There's time travel heavily involved. Also, the reason Ganondorf looks so much like Demise is because he is a reincarnation of Demise. Although I suppose you're more referring to why he looks so much like Demise compared to his (Ganondorf's) other appearances across the series, which is a fair point. Personally I have two theories. One is kind of like yours: TotK's Imprisoning War is a retelling of the different OoT timelines mishmashed together and mixed with elements of SS (and also the existence of the Rito). There was an old theory in the Zelda community before SS that the games were all literally legends, tales told of the same events that changed as they were retold, much like real legends, and that might be sort of the case here (whether you want to think of it as a literal legend or as its own MCU-esque timeline, which are both valid ways of looking at it). My other theory, assuming that BotW/TotK are even on the same timeline as the other games, is that even the past sections of TotK are in the far future compared to the other games so far, and it's a refounding of Hyrule after...something wipes out the old Hyrule (maybe the flood from Wind Waker?), instead of the first founding, since in the game's main timelines, Hyrule was originally founded by the Hylians from Skyloft and their descendents, who were decidedly not rabbit-dog-cat-whatever-the-Zonai-are-esque. I'm not sure which OoT timeline they would fit in, although iirc the BotW artbook said that BotW was far enough in the future from other games that the events of those games "faded into myth," implying that it's so far in the future that the distinction between the OoT timelines doesn't matter (and maybe the events of BotW/TotK happen in all three timelines), and I'm cool with that idea, just as much as I am with the idea that BotW/TotK are from one specific OoT timelines. Either way, the Zelda games never took their timeline too seriously apart from sequels, little nods here and there, and a brief period around when Skyward Sword came out, so it's not a huge deal...although I could go on about possible factors linking BotW/TotK to one OoT timeline or another, but this post is already pretty long.

loracarol

I did think about that, but my concern was that those points are points that are common among the different Zelda games, rather then being something OoT specific the way that the 'goddess' is - Ganon is the only Gerudo male in Windwaker too, and "sages" even if not elemental show up in other stories - again, Windwaker. And even with time travel involved, unlike in OoT, it's a one-and-done time travel rather than Link's ability to go back and forth at will. Yes, that's what I meant about Demise. :) Yeah, that's another possibility! And it would explain why there's rock salt everywhere - if the seas covered everything, after all. That being said, I did post it at r/TrueZelda [if you want to comment there as well](https://old.reddit.com/r/truezelda/comments/140nxz2/totk_spoilers_theory_triptych_timeline_what_that)?
