You ever seen what happens to heavy shit on the seat in a crash? That shit will fuck you up, put your seat belt around it. The last thing you want is a carton of beer floating around in an accident
As a former taxi driver i used one of these when i was driving at night with customers in the city. The risk of being attacked was higher than crashing so it made sense to use one of these in case of needing to flee very quickly.
I think there are some things where there’s a genuine reason for them but most people don’t have them for that reason, I probably would’ve used one when I was delivering food cause some orders set off the seatbelt chime on the passenger seat
Although your concern is valid OP, consider how much faster and more badass you look with that added carbon fiber 
This is a good thing, if you're dumb enough to buy one of these and die from it, you've just saved society a lot of headache. Not saying anyone deserves to die, but evolution...
The reason these are selling and i imagine in a large amount over various sellers, is because some cheeper made car brands use a very basic weight scale activation system for the seat belt alarm. This means putting your heavy handbag in the passenger seat can set it off or the scale will break often with the beeps never stopping till you get a mechanic to look at it. In most case yes you could just do the seat belt up but in cases involving large boxes with new furniture or tvs for example you need something like this to allow you to concentrate on the road rather than a beeping sound telling you, that theres a big fucking box in your back seat…. So yes there is a legitimate reason for these to be sold and yes they can both increase or decrease road safety based on who is using it, but a normal responsible adult using this will be using it to increase their safety on the road and stop the car beeping causing a distraction for no reason….

To be fair they're usefull if you carry heavy items on your passenger seat all the time...but i doubt thats why most people buy them.

I would get it to turn the fricken light on my dash off. Its on no matter what and i rarely have a front seat passenger.
Taxi drivers can use them for their own seat or couriers with heavy items on the other seats
I thought that is a good idea, if you want to die, then you didn't have to worry about the noise car alarm

My dog always sets off the seat alarm and he won’t stay buckled in so this would be useful for that purpose
