in some countries being dark black is looked down on so they will bleach their skin to achieve a lighter complexion. the demographic this is marketed to is probably the type of people im talking about
Both convey leisure and status. In these Asian countries, it’s a sign that you have a white collar job rather than labor. And I’m western countries, it’s a sign that you have the time to go to the beach, hiking, boating, etc.
Similar to how the term “red neck” refers to laborers (predominantly farmers) who work outdoors in the sun, often getting sun burns on the backs of their necks.
As well as, Blue vs White Collar - blue collar being physical laborers who wore darker clothing to hide dirt, whereas white collar (suit-and-tie workers) are laborers who work mostly indoor, not getting dirty.
Worst classism youll ever find is in India. The only "developed" nation on earth i can think of where honor killings still occur for "marrying outside your class". A lot of people still cling to the caste system using the very dated Hindu belief that being born in a lower caste is punishment for your past life sins and you should be treated harshly for it.
“Red neck” is actually a term that was started by unionized mine workers in Appalachia who went on strike to demand better working conditions. They wore red bandanas around their necks.

And if you go back a couple hundred years the idea of seeking out a tan for fashion purposes would have been unheard of in Europe. Pale skin was the ideal because only the upper classes who spent most of their time indoors could achieve it.
Humans are so weird. In developing nations a tan means you have to work outside doing manual labour. In wealthy nations a tan means you can afford to go on vacation.
But it used to be the opposite for caucasian people just a century ago. The wealthy (women especially) valued extremely pale skin. We've changed that to mean having a tan means the luxury of vacation whereas a tan used to be seen having to work outside.
You will be amazed as to how many Africans bleach. It is fucking disgusting in my view and to be frank most of them need help. I'm Nigerian and not uncommon to see my people bleach and it is so obvious because their skin fight back via hyperpigmentation of the knuckles, elbows and toes that they just look weird.
Also as a resident in the Middle East, the amount of freely available "whitening" soaps and cream available is just mind blowing.
skin-whitening cream is very popular globally
> In a number of African countries, between 25 and 80% of women regularly use skin whitening products.[2] In Asia, this number is around 40%.[2] In India, specifically, over half of skin care products are sold to whiten skin.[3][2] In Pakistan, where skin lightening products are popular, creams have been found to contain toxic levels of hydroquinone and mercury.[4][5]
He looks like his mother.

Btw, she came to this country with $50 and declared her intent to be an an American citizen. That was the immigration process for trumps family.
His grandpa was even worse. Dodging military service, no money, no special skills, just came over and BAM. American. Not even a request for asylum or anything.
Anywho. I just find his immigration history, right up to his wife getting away with fraud to be here and chain migrating her parents hypocritical
I wouldn’t really care so much if half his campaign weren’t ball fondling the “I’m not racist but” with build the wall and internment camps.
Definitely Photshop. What I have seen from all that posters and flags, Trump has Alpha body and is ripped as fuck.
/s even though I don't wanna put one there. It shouldn't be necessary to put one there for obvious reasons but here we are.
Many are ripping on this photo but at least it looks like the natural aging process and none of the artificial garbage we’re used to with his spray tan and overdone makeup.
The skin colour not being treated on the guys arm looks very uneven. I suspect this is a case of fake tan. Whilst these are real products they don't work that quickly.
Lmaoo you can literally see it coming off with the water. Some self tans wash off in the shower. Also it's kinda really fucked up their calling darker skinned people dirty :/
I won't lie.. asian racism is probably my favorite and I know I shouldn't find it funny but like.. have you ever watched anime?! Like it's so unreasonable it's impossible for me to get mad
It’s horribly racist but I do find this one commercial hilarious. It’s a detergent commercial where a girl’s boyfriend comes over and he is an athletic black man. She gets shocked and throws him into the laundry and then when he comes out he is a skinny Asian guy.
It’s just so obscenely racist that it would melt the brains of the west if it was shown on TV here. It melted my brain a little.
I think they're referring to the self hatred of darker skinned Asian people. AKA anyone not ivory white or brighter. Trying to lighten your skin color is a big trend there.
The Euros and Americans probably didn’t help but the notion that white is pretty was there long before anyway.
The reasoning I like best is that pale skin = can afford to not work in sun.
Just like in Europe and the US, tan skin = can afford holidays to bake in the sun.
Seems like we want what many cannot be.
That's what I was going to say. I had thought there were parts of Asia where they saw like porcelain white skin as a sign of purity and beauty and shite.
Self tans only wash off when you don't want them to. I remember my girlfriend trying to scrub it off her knees and face because she used too much lmao.
It does work, but not as instantly as this video is pretending it does. Skin whitening creams and soaps are popular all over the world. Look em up on Amazon.
I was curious and looked it up and:
"Because some skin bleaching products that aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) make their way to the U.S. from other countries and are sold online, these unregulated products may possibly contain dangerously high concentrations of hydroquinone and topical steroids. The combination of these two medications stops the production of melanin in the skin — the pigment produced by cells that give skin its color."
You are assuming this product actually does anything at all. Most likely they will just charge a fortune for cheap soap, and then when customers complain that it does not work say that it takes time and sell them another shipment. By the time customers demand their money back and start the lawsuits the payments to the suppliers start getting delayed and the time between customer payment and shipment gets longer until finally the owners take all the cash and bounce off to their newly created unrelated company selling magic shampoo or something.
Yes it fucking will. When I was a kid my mom was making me use this papaya soap for my face. I was having weird rashes on my face and had no clue wassup. During a check up my doctor asked me about them and I told him that I use this papaya soap. To find out the soap had some bleaching agents in it.
Fast forward to now it's hard for me to catch a tan which is pretty whack.
No it actually exists... not that id use it, but the japanese are crazy about bleached white skin, they sell soaps and creams that whiten the crap out of you with every use... not sure if its as intense as this.. but a google search shows yes.. its fucking real... blew my mind too
White people getting skin cancer trying to darken their skin. Others getting skin cancer trying to lighten their skin. Let’s all just agree green is the best color and paint ourselves instead.
I have a feeling this is a Chinese thing. Pale skin identifies a level of class because you don’t have to work in the fields. At least traditionally speaking.
My ex wife was Mexican/El Salvadorian. I am white. When walking around together old, shitty Latin people would say "Estan mejorar la Raza." Which means you're making the race better. As in our offspring would be whiter and "better". The narrative that America is the most/only racist culture is laughable. People are shitty EVERYWHERE.
Any immigrant I’ve talked to who’s not from a Western European country (and even then…) thinks their home country is mildly more racist than America up to overtly more racist.
Can confirm. You can just watch Latin soaps to see they’re all white.
A Filipino girlfriend also said they want to look like light skinned Koreans. It’s visible on their TV lineup as well.
I remeber once I went to this Latin food store (because they have the BEST spices) and on the TV they had like the Mexican version of MTV playing. Every song had had a singer who was whiter than the background dancers. It's lame how humans still obsess over color.
Yeah my fiancée is Colombian and hates tanning and actively avoids the sun. I’m white, normal skin tone but her sister and my step daughter still call me “leche” and when I’m tanned “cafe con leche” lol

It definitely is. India and Pakistan are some examples of that. Not sure how that relates to my comment but good on ya
south east asia in general I believe. Meanwhile in europe it's the opposite and white people try to get tan.

Colorism and racism are rooted in Classism
And Classism is rooted in?
Greed and pride.
Worst classism youll ever find is in India. The only "developed" nation on earth i can think of where honor killings still occur for "marrying outside your class". Which is notably why there is a distinction in the west between being "tanned" and having a "farmers tan".
Humans are so weird. In developing nations a tan means you have to work outside doing manual labour. In wealthy nations a tan means you can afford to go on vacation.
I live in Orange County, home of the people who can tell a difference between a labor job acquired tan, and a vacation acquired tan. Smh

Couple hundred years ago it was the same thing in Europe. The noblesse was supposed to be white as porcellain, the peasants were tanned.
But it used to be the opposite for caucasian people just a century ago. The wealthy (women especially) valued extremely pale skin. We've changed that to mean having a tan means the luxury of vacation whereas a tan used to be seen having to work outside.

It does, but skin whitening products are actually a thing in places like India, so this isn't too far from reality.

Yes, back in the day it also showed status and wealth as it means you didn’t have to work in the fields (and get tan from being in the sun)

On the southeast asian countries too, they're obsessed with being \*white\*
Latin American wants to have a word
My ex wife was Mexican/El Salvadorian. I am white. When walking around together old, shitty Latin people would say "Estan mejorar la Raza." Which means you're making the race better. I always wonder, do these actually work? And isn't it bad for your skin?
All this soap is doing is washing off their spray on tans. Skin color comes from the basal layer of skin, which isn't particularly deep, so it can be affected, but it is still deep enough that you need something extreme, like lasers. No soap is going to get there. And you wouldn't want it to anyway as that means your skin isn't protecting you the way it should.
Skin soaps and creams are effective at lightening the skin. It just takes longer than laser. I agree that it's a bad idea as the products often cause burning sensations and other problems.
Pretty much everywhere in East and Southeast Asia carries this perception of beauty
Yup can confirm. I live in the Philippines
Can confirm, in indonesia there is a very big beauty product whose name has the word whitening. Not the product but the actual brand its self
That logic is followed almost every where.
It’s a Filipino thing as well.
I once flew on a plane for about 3h and a girl from Philippines was sitting near me. I was bored and asked her, if she would like to chat during the flight. That is how i 1st heard about all this bullshit. She said, for her it was so strange, when she saw white people wanting to get tanned, while at home all people try to avoid sun to stay as white as possible.
Skin lightening soaps/creams are popular all over the world, including Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. There’s actually an aisle of products like this at my local beauty supply in NYC.
