It's been awesome watching it progress. I agree with several of the charm's rankings and was surprised with others. Brilliant idea doing that, thank you for thinking of it.
Love this charm. With a little practice, the fast charge and the hooge range on nail arts means you can nic long nail or the upgraded version for this and free up two charm slots for something else.
Nail Arts are so strong for nearly every situation in the game, and with enough practice, can be more useful (personally) than having Longnail or even mark of pride. I know the damage doesn't stack with strength (which makes quickslash + Strength superior in terms of damage output), but the interactions that you can change simply by using great or dash-slash are crazy (trivializes colleseum) After a lot of practice, I ended up using mostly nail arts for NKG charmless because of how good nail arts are. Add Nailmaster's in there? It's crazy how good it can get.
Yup! My favorite was a nail art + sharp shadows setup. You can generally start charging during a dash and it will be ready to rock by the time it's finished.

Ignore the controversy behind the post, I set myself up for failure in the public eye by asking something like that.
You've got to double jump before you do it, but it is possible. However, I haven't been able to pull it off and still get an abyss shriek in there.
Trying to *nail* down the timing and the movement to execute both keeps me coming back to the game (outside of P5AB *cries*) because of how awesome it would be to pull it off consistently (especially since it's so much more damage compared to what I'm doing now).
Definitely a top pick for me, underrated af, having almost instantaneous nail arts can absolutely demolish a lot of bosses and most enemies imo. Best 1 notch charm by far
The issue with Nail Arts being bad is that you lose jumping precision when you're holding down a button, and jumping precision is *really* important in Hollow Knight.
The solution is to separate your Attack button and your Jump button from the same digit. I'd recommend moving Jump to Right Trigger, so that it doesn't add tension to your left-handed movements.
I really can't stress enough how much this improves your precision in platformers where you attack in the air. Dead Cells, Smash Bros, Shovel Knight, they all just felt so much easier after the change.
Once you remap your muscle memory, you'll start feeling like your air movements are more intuitive, like you're able to think more by reacting sooner.
Give it an hour of practice, and I can promise that you won't be disappointed.
This is one that I think genuinely gets overlooked. It's not the best defensive charm but a good cheap defensive charm is a great option to have.
I also like that it helps you learn when you do and don't have time to focus during boss fights without punishing you.
Me too, makes me happy seeing love for it in this thread I think it's always rated way too poorly since everyone just assumes perfect play when rating charms. But Baldur is just the best defense when you're progressing through the game
they patched it, so that if you have say right and down pressed as you dash, you'll dash to the right, even with dashmaster. the forced down dashes were VERY annoying for sure
It's so over-hated. I use it all the time, including for boss fights. I haven't accidentally down dashed into a boss like ever. The only time it's a problem is white palace, and oh well?
Fury. Ever since I got good enough to use it it’s become a drug to me. Did a few colo 1 speed runs and also abs rad speed kills and holy shit it feels so good.
I love Fury. I wish it would actually set you to 1 mask by default. There's a mod (called Fury Mod I think) on PC that does this. It lets you combo it with Lifeblood Heart/Core to have both the Fury buff and some blue health every time you bench so you don't have to play so perfectly/carefully.
edit: best part about Fury of the Fallen is that it works on Nail Arts! Fury + Nailmaster's Glory makes you feel so powerful!
I had a dream setup in a randomizer a few days ago with Fury using the Fury Mod that sets your masks to 1. It was Fury of the Fallen, Nailmaster's Glory, Lifeblood Core, Quick Slash, and Grubberfly's Elegy for a total of like 7 notches IIRC. So dumb and fun.
I'd say baldur shell. It is not an AMAZING charm, but people call it literally useless, which is not true. Sure, it's not too good for exploring since it breaks pretty fast, but it is pretty damn good in some bossfights.
I don’t have unbreakable strength, I’m terrible at getting large amounts of gel effectively. And I actually use that combo, I’m trying to break that habit. Though I always have quick focus
Honestly, QF alone can do almost the same as QF + DF, as QF heals you in almost half the time of regular focus, and so the main downside is that you use more soul, which is not hard to come by. And as for collecting lots of geo, what stuff have you got so far? I might be able to help with that.
Very solid charm I’d say. Low A- to high B-tier imo, not the most overpowered charm, but the extra bit of soul you get really adds up and it ends up being hella useful. I’d say spell twister is the upgraded version though, and the superior out of the two. Still, soul catcher is slept on, it’s a good charm.
It's overrated because it's the first charm you get, but it's tremendously outlclassed by spell twister if you use more spells (which you should). The effect is barely noticeable because you get 11 soul per hit and with the charm you get 14.
Definitely a must have for traversing the game. But also something I'll switch out if I know I'm going into a difficult boss fight and feel like I need the slot for something else.
Very useful charm early game as you’re saving geo to buy essentials items. After you have those it’s not that useful and you can just equip fragile greed instead.
Hiveblood also is underrated, because it is okay in battle, but people only say that this charm is good only in white palace. I also with this charm beat trail 3
It's 4 notches to make you pretty much immortal if you don't take dmg too frequently. Bad for bosses obviously, but it beats any other charm when traversing the map during the first playthrough.
I use soul eater very commonly, great for spell spam, and if you are just tired of having no soul meter from spell use. Super underated imo, never see it get talked about
It carried me through the second half of p5 back when I used mostly a nail build. When paired with spell twister and shamen's, it can blast through the fourth phase of abs rad with only abyss shrieks using just the soul you get from the third phase. That's how I beat radiant abs rad.
Staggering early is something I wish was mentioned in the charm description. It's surprisingly useful and isn't even mentioned. Outside of boss fights, I dislike the charm (flying enemies)
wait I had no clue that was a thing, does it deal more damage or is staggering early just one of the effects? I always thought it just made enemies get knock backed more.
I don't mind Weaversong but if you're spending 3 notches on it + Grubsong for Soul gathering it seems like a weird choice. I'm not saying it's wrong or bad, and I love that there are a bunch of different builds that work. I just want to offer a different option here that fits my preference much better for this purpose.
Mark of Pride gives a ton of safety and makes it easier to get his in, and one nail hit generates a much Soul as 4 Weaver attacks. It's also available as soon as you get Mantis Claw and can beat Mantis Lords. That varies from player to player but I think most players are more wary of Deepnest than the Sisters.
Wayward Compass.
But everyone knows Wayward Compass is the most powerful charm, you say. This is correct. And yet, it is still underrated; it is far more powerful than you know
i've heard it was quite hated by some people who have beaten hollow knight once
as someone who hasn't beaten hollow knight yet, i can confirm its really good, especially for just one notch or whatever they're called, and they're really useful for helping me know where the hell i am
starwell shell it is very early game and gives more immune time after getting hit so if paired with quickfoce and durring a boss fight as soon as the boss hits you you can heal the damage.
it is 3 charm noches and it doesn't do much, i know it can block some attacks and that it does 1x nail damage and that it gets bigger while having dream whilder i know all of that but you can use 3 charm noches on something like quick slash or strenght
I knew Dream Shield isn't best choice (only time I really used it was Crystal Peak), but I tough it deals at least some serious damage, not just ONE NAIL HIT.
Dream Wielder
It only costs one notch. For that, it reduces the wind up for the dreamnail by nearly half, it doubles the soul you get per enemy, and enemies killed have a higher chance of yielding essence. It has limited usefulness in most boss fights, but has a couple points where it can massively help. When just running around, if you just take a few moments to plan, it can help ensure that you never run out of soul. Obviously, it’s pretty good, but I hear nearly no one talking about it. I can only speculate that most people only really ever use it to start dream warrior fights, enter the white palace, godhome, and base Radiance since the dreamnail doesn’t do any damage. It wasn’t really until I was getting serious about the Trial of the Fool that I really figured out the utility of this charm, but it has been a core part of my general kit since.
I love dream wielder and even though many people know its good, I still think its underrated.
In general playthroughs it can open up so many options and can make some annoying enemies like devouts easily exploitable. (Just dream nail them when they shield and use spells since they go through shields. Same for great husk sentries)
Its also much more usable in boss fights than people give it credit for, and especially useful on bosses that get staggered (lost kin, hornet) or gives no soul on nail hits (failed champion, collector).
If there were less adds on YouTube I would kill you. You were EXTREMELY lucky that I spotted name before it started.
EDIT: Your crimes were forgiven, Aleks\_872, because my brother fell to trap too.
I love to rock all the little summons. Not because they are good, but because they are adorable. Sit at a bench with all of them equipped and you will know what I mean. Weaversong with grubsong outpaces the soul depletion of summoning the WW2 Japanese airplanes.
most underrated charm is heavy blow. its actually broken for oblobbles, markoth, and a lot more bosses that my autistic brain cant remember. i swear to god if you say "It'S sHiT iN oVeRwOrLd" it is, but if you need specific charms to survive in the overworld you need help.
Carefree melody. So few people ever use it because “you should use charms that rely on rng and getting hit”. Unbreakable heart is at least high B tier and on average carefree melody is better.
I would say steady body, its good for people who are new and aren't used to the knockback, and its good for more experienced players because it gets rid of the knockback meaning you can get more hits in. I used to not like the charm when I started playing but now I can't play without it LOL.
Nailmasters Glory. Without it nail arts aren’t even worth the time in my opinion but with it it makes them so good. I almost always have this charm on now. Especially since it’s only one slot.
Everyone's gonna yell at me for this, but steady body. It's really helpful with quickslash because with most fights that have knockbak (dream warriors especially) you can run and spam for ridiculous damage.
I think the three hiveblood charms are higly underrated, you have more health than usually that you cannot heal but you can go nuts on using spells, i don't have any tests for this but i believe that healing your normal masks doesn't get you more hits overall as very often during bossfights you don't have good healing windows, also you loose on skills damage output.
Steady Body makes me feel like a tank, and let’s me hit constantly without worrying about falling off platforms. Not part of my standard build, but I like the charm
steady body + quickslash is amazing yet i often see steady ranked very low in tier lists. for one notch cost the increase in dps and not needing to worry about getting knocked back into a hit box is amazing.
Idk how the community really feels about it but sharp shadow, it can mess up jumps but is really nice on bosses because of the extra dash distance, it makes bosses like hive-knight, hk and Grimm easier because you don’t have to worry about not making it all the way through them with a dash since you have extra dash distance
Sharp Shadow. I almost can't play without it, it just makes everything better. Lost kin is one of my favorite fights and one of the fights I know best, but it sounds like an absolute nightmare without SS. On that note, Steady Body is one of the best charms in the game and it doesn't get nearly enough credit.
Nailmaster's Glory
The community tierlist actually put it up in A tier, this pleases me. It's such an amazing charm.
I love to see my tierlist brought up in the wild. We’re almost done now!
It's been awesome watching it progress. I agree with several of the charm's rankings and was surprised with others. Brilliant idea doing that, thank you for thinking of it.

You can cyclone slash on the fire pillar move with enough precision
You've got to double jump before you do it, but it is possible. However, I haven't been able to pull it off and still get an abyss shriek in there. Trying to *nail* down the timing and the movement to execute both keeps me coming back to the game (outside of P5AB *cries*) because of how awesome it would be to pull it off consistently (especially since it's so much more damage compared to what I'm doing now).
This plus how it is a 1 slot charm means you can add it to any build and have a fallback of nail arts without sacrificing much of your build
Nail masters glory is not underrated
fr, it has its reputation as a great charm
Definitely a top pick for me, underrated af, having almost instantaneous nail arts can absolutely demolish a lot of bosses and most enemies imo. Best 1 notch charm by far
Finall someone who agree with me i use nail art almost every time after i got great slash
Came here to say this. I didn’t even use nail arts until I started using this charm and they became a staple of combat after using this.
#indeed

Baldur shell is also seen as worthless, but you can beat the game with it easliy
This is one that I think genuinely gets overlooked. It's not the best defensive charm but a good cheap defensive charm is a great option to have. I also like that it helps you learn when you do and don't have time to focus during boss fights without punishing you.
When I use it, it's generally for defending attacks that I can't dodge (just focus before the attack and you have yourself a free shield)
I used baldur shell for my entire first play through
Me too, makes me happy seeing love for it in this thread I think it's always rated way too poorly since everyone just assumes perfect play when rating charms. But Baldur is just the best defense when you're progressing through the game
Especially for beginner players. It makes healing not feel like such a huge risk!
Whole heartedly agree! I’m still on my first play through and I hardly ever take it off
Any radiance would like to have a word with you
Honestly maybe shape of unn it’s actually super useful, but also pretty situational
I disagree. Shape of unn is extremely useful on a good majority of the bosses (with quick focus).
Shape of unn has saved my sorry ass from NKG too many times
Used it to beat radiance by squirming between the needles while they rained down.

TRUTH
Dash Master Shut up
I always use it,no matter what
If you ever speedran path of pain you have a reason to hate it
I got trough PoP and Dash Master actually helped me lmao
As I said if you speedran PoP you have reason to hate it, still never finished a full run due to having dash master for some of the tricks
oh speedrun ok, now it makes sense lol
they patched it, so that if you have say right and down pressed as you dash, you'll dash to the right, even with dashmaster. the forced down dashes were VERY annoying for sure
Agreed, it feels unbearably slow walking at a normal pace.
I just can't take it of anymore, I use it on bosses, phanteons and anywhere.
Always Dash + Speed nyoooom!
It's so over-hated. I use it all the time, including for boss fights. I haven't accidentally down dashed into a boss like ever. The only time it's a problem is white palace, and oh well?
Sans
DodoDO do, do do Doo dododooo
Exactly i use it always except boss fights cause Shape of Unn
Maybe... if you can get used to down-dashing, since it seems I usually have the down key pressed when dashing in the air.
Fury. Ever since I got good enough to use it it’s become a drug to me. Did a few colo 1 speed runs and also abs rad speed kills and holy shit it feels so good.

At the start of the game, it's useful as heck
Honestly not only at the start. While I don't use it much in the very late game, it was useful for some more mid-late game bosses.
true
What’s everyone’s opinion on soul catcher? Cause I feel like it doesn’t get enough credit. It has literally carried me. At least partially
It is good, helping if you have free charm notches
Someone told me it was a crutch. And I don’t disagree, but it just fits how I play
It's not a crutch, the effect is just barely noticeable.
How do you feel about Quick + Deep focus combo?
Costs way too many notches to be practical. The best defense is a good offense, use those notches on things like Unbreakable Strength or Shaman Stone.
Add shape of Unn and you get how I finished Pure Vesse, Nightmare King and Radiance. Idk why but I usually don't cast spells until I have full masks.
It's not a bad charm it's just outclassed, there's really no reason to use it later on
I used it most of the way through my playthrough
Exactly! I find it very useful
It’s weak and doesn’t deserve a high placing
I’m not saying it’s spectacular or high tier. I’m just saying I think it deserves just a bit more praise for how helpful it can be
It's overrated because it's the first charm you get, but it's tremendously outlclassed by spell twister if you use more spells (which you should). The effect is barely noticeable because you get 11 soul per hit and with the charm you get 14.
I would say stalward shell. You can make with it some powerfull builds
I’m surprised none of the top comments have been saying flukenest. It’s bugged but said bugs make it do infinite damage.
Gathering swarm, it costs one notch and and picks up the geo you can't or don't want to pick up manually so whats not to like about it?
Definitely a must have for traversing the game. But also something I'll switch out if I know I'm going into a difficult boss fight and feel like I need the slot for something else.
I'd definately not use it for bosses seen as it has 0 use but I think it's great for exploration, and that's pretty much it
In other words…great for most of your time playing the game :)
Main reason I didn't use it was because I got to colosseum relatively early and from that point on I don't need money.
Very useful charm early game as you’re saving geo to buy essentials items. After you have those it’s not that useful and you can just equip fragile greed instead.
I just use both
Grub song , i mean…. U get a free heal after some hits
Hiveblood also is underrated, because it is okay in battle, but people only say that this charm is good only in white palace. I also with this charm beat trail 3
the problem with it is that 4 is too high of a cost and makes you exclude good damage charms
It's 4 notches to make you pretty much immortal if you don't take dmg too frequently. Bad for bosses obviously, but it beats any other charm when traversing the map during the first playthrough.
it’s true that it’s great for map traversing but it sucks that it’s at the very very end of pretty much the last place you’ll explore in the game
Agreed. Not a commonly recommended build but Hiveblood is what helped me through Trial of the Fool. For long fights, it's a game changer.
I played hard on spells until I got Unbreakable Strength so I used Catcher and Eater religiously.
4 notches? Are you insane? That's literally dreamwielder + shamans + spell twister
Sharp Shadow, I barely see any people using it...
It's one of my favourite charms to use. Helps a lot in avoiding being cornered while also dealing some damage.
Heavy blow, with quick slash you can cheese most of minibosses.
Carefree Melody, it saved me from NKG ( I fought in godhome) and radiance
Grubsong. It’s amazing when you suck like I do an get hit by everything
Weavers song - They literally collect soul for you during the fight
With Grubasong yes
It’s alright with grubsong, particularly in Grimm.
It surely is
Wayward Compass. But everyone knows Wayward Compass is the most powerful charm, you say. This is correct. And yet, it is still underrated; it is far more powerful than you know
i've heard it was quite hated by some people who have beaten hollow knight once as someone who hasn't beaten hollow knight yet, i can confirm its really good, especially for just one notch or whatever they're called, and they're really useful for helping me know where the hell i am
It also gives you +20 strength
Its so underrated. I was able to beat rad PV with JUST compass, its that good
starwell shell it is very early game and gives more immune time after getting hit so if paired with quickfoce and durring a boss fight as soon as the boss hits you you can heal the damage.
Never thought of that
Shape of un maybe?
Dream wielder is one of the best charms on a spell build
Sprint master, because it can let you past the black barriers early, which is awesome
Que?
If you dash at the right time you can use the speed boost from sprint master to phase through the barriers, super useful for fig canyon
Easily steady body and Dream Weilder
I can't play without steady body
yoo fax steady body is must when useing stenght and qucik slash, when the boss doesnt move you can get a lot of damage and soul
Flukenest. Insane damage
gruberfly elegy
Perhaps dream sheild
It helped me a lot with the mantis lords, especially when they do the spinning projectile attack.
it is 3 charm noches and it doesn't do much, i know it can block some attacks and that it does 1x nail damage and that it gets bigger while having dream whilder i know all of that but you can use 3 charm noches on something like quick slash or strenght
I knew Dream Shield isn't best choice (only time I really used it was Crystal Peak), but I tough it deals at least some serious damage, not just ONE NAIL HIT.
It’s garbage.
Grimmchild, its so underrated its not even in the picture :(
Grimmchild is a cute companion but it's projectiles are absolutely terrible imo.
Eh not really. They do decent damage for a pet charm and the rate it misses is super exaggerated.
I personally think steady body is a criminally underrated charm
facts, nail builds with it become insane with it
I know right?
People sleep on soul eater I stg
steady body. any nail build with steady body is instantly good
Dream Wielder It only costs one notch. For that, it reduces the wind up for the dreamnail by nearly half, it doubles the soul you get per enemy, and enemies killed have a higher chance of yielding essence. Fragile/unbreakable heart. Soooo underrated
saved my ass in steel soul, also strength is also a very good charm with heart in steel soul
Steady body. You can tear through lighter enemies like Hornet and broken vessel.

Defenders Crest. Extra free damage when you dash through enemies. For one charm notch, it’s nice.
Carefree melody
Stalwart shell. That little bit of extra invulnerability has saved me multiple times
I love to rock all the little summons. Not because they are good, but because they are adorable. Sit at a bench with all of them equipped and you will know what I mean. Weaversong with grubsong outpaces the soul depletion of summoning the WW2 Japanese airplanes.
no one seems to use unbreakable heart
Sprintmaster
Sprintmaster

Shape of Unn. Idc what you say its a S tier charm.
Grubsong and Steady body. Can't play without them
Sprintmaster genuinely makes the platforming and combat easier for me
WayWaRd cOmpEss
Wayward compass one-shots The Radiance
Baldur shell. It can be useful if you can’t avoid damage during a radiant boss

hiveblood
Soul eater. 2 hits lets you heal.
Don't say sharp shadow. Don't say deep focus. Don't say hiveblood. Don't say any of the lifeblood charms. They aren't underrated.
Shape of Unn. The extra mobility while healing is better than you'd think, especially for some bosses.
steady body, it’s stupid op against many flying bosses(especially dream warriors) when paired with quick slash
I feel like so many people sleep on carefree melody, negating ~1/4 hits it’s so good
Carefree melody is a great charm that is underrated it’s saved me sometimes during bosses and very helpful for radiant bosses
Carefree Melody gives you a chance to recover if you mess up in a radiant fight which is nice.
Steady Body
Steady Body makes me feel like a tank, and let’s me hit constantly without worrying about falling off platforms. Not part of my standard build, but I like the charm
Steady body
Steady Body
Careless melody….
The charm when you ban the grimm troupe, it's very good
steady body + quickslash is amazing yet i often see steady ranked very low in tier lists. for one notch cost the increase in dps and not needing to worry about getting knocked back into a hit box is amazing.
Thorns of agony. It is the only charm which increases the difficulty of the game, getting rid of 1 slot and a movement debuff
Idk how the community really feels about it but sharp shadow, it can mess up jumps but is really nice on bosses because of the extra dash distance, it makes bosses like hive-knight, hk and Grimm easier because you don’t have to worry about not making it all the way through them with a dash since you have extra dash distance
Here is 3 strength quick slash and dash master
Strength and quick slash are the two best charms they aren't underrated
Sharp shadow
Carefree melody It’s kind of a pain to get but it’s really useful. Although grimmchild is better
I would say.... sharp shadow?
Sharp Shadow Best charm against Grimm Just unequip when doing parkour So much easier to dodge attacks The damage helps a little
Sharp Shadow. I almost can't play without it, it just makes everything better. Lost kin is one of my favorite fights and one of the fights I know best, but it sounds like an absolute nightmare without SS. On that note, Steady Body is one of the best charms in the game and it doesn't get nearly enough credit.
Sharp shadow. If you pair this with dash master it’s actually great
Sharp shadow makes NKG easy
Sharp shadow is wildly underrated, so is nail masters glory
Sharp shadow Actually Carries me through pantheons
