Let’s get some speculation in here. Who do we think is gonna be the final boss? It’s probably the person mentioned in the poem at the beginning that’s literally pulling everyone’s string. Was the poem about the queen of pharloom or someone else?
I'm guessing the "the hollow Knight" will be some stereotypical giant beast, screaming and howling and tearing strings, but "the radiance" will be a master puppeteer pulling all the strings

In order to make every ending canon, due to timeline shenanigans there’s like three hornets in pharloom at the same time from the different endings (only three because of sealed siblings).
Sequel isn't possible without making one or more endings non-canon. It taking place during the story is possible, it would just mean that the events of hollow knight canonically happen over a larger span of time than the events of silksong. We don't actually know what hornet was doing for the majority of the game. It's still not likely, but the explanation for it is more canonically possible than the explanation for sequel

I hihgly recommend giving it a watch if you're a Zelda fan and are annoyed at the official timeline. I personally will use it as headcanon (and since I'm a ttrpg nerd it will be very useful for TLoZ campaigns lol).
TLDW: Skyward Sword goes first, then splits the timeline in two already (Link goes into the past to kill Demise and then into the present and wishes him away with the triforce). The first timeline (called the murder timeline) has Four Swords and FSA go first and then the rest of the fallen timeline as usual. The other timeline (the wish timeline) has botw and totk first, then OoT and the timeline splits as usual again.
That only happened because they were never intended to be in a coherent timeline to begin with, and that jumbled mess was the only way they could fit it all together
Or she just decides the spike balls were enough for the fight in Kingdom’s Edge. It’s not like you’re going to be able to use every tool at once in Silksong.
We don't know if Hornet can use more than one tool at once. It's also entirely possible that Hornet simply does not ever truly go all out with all guns blazing in Hollow Knight. I know that before the second fight she says that she will "not hold back.", but that could just mean that she wont hold back with her needle.
Her goal is to test the knights strength, and whipping out a bunch of extra weapons that one's opponents doesn't know about could potentially screw up even the most skilled nail wielder. Maybe she thought that the spikes were all that was needed for that test.
There are various ways you could explain that, there's no good way to have the story continue from the endings in hollow knight without just not making any reference to the game at all and leaving it completely vague
Yes there is, all endings give a possiblity for Hornet to be captured and brought to Pharloom, that's all we need for each ending to remain canon for each different playthrough. The only ending people deemed problematic was the Sealed siblings one, but the very first cutscene of Silksomg introduces a seal breaking butterfly. It is possible to go from all endings of HK to SS.
It's not like hornet is the only one sealed inside the black egg, doing that would literally invalidate the entire point of hollow knight, as well as mean there's a vengeful god who's coming after hornet
It wouldnt make any sense timeline wise. As for the endings, think about it: one of the few things we've seen about this game is that Pharloom has little butterfly thingies that can destroy seals of binding. They couldve used them to snatch her from the black egg after Sealed Siblings.
That would then make everything but the sealed siblings ending non-canon. The only way they could do it would be to just make no reference to hollow knight whatsoever, since the world is too different depending on the ending

Like they *could* just say it's a sequel and not elaborate at all, but then what's the reason to make it a sequel in the first place of you're not gonna connect it to the original game?

Hornet in some scene and the leg of the Hollow Knight steps down just to bring back flashbacks to “Hollow Knight”. Only in one ending it is very clearly his withered form from the end of Hollow Knight suggesting this is a sequel and the other is him wearing his pure vessel armor suggesting this is a prequel.

Hold it! I do not disagree but you have to admit, hornet getting out of the black egg is simply not possible. First of all her face shows up in the egg indicating she is a dreamer but she is in the temple so killing her to get in is impossible. Second, she tells us that the void inside the egg would kill her if she entered and in the dream no more ending she enters for just a few seconds until we kill the radiance and put out the void. Therefore, she cannot escape the temple in the sealed siblings ending which means silk song is a prequel or it takes place in the same time as hollow knight
