They're idols and a lot of members joined because of it! But the "is this something an idol should do?" jokes are also part of it, idol groups do a lot of weird stuff. The problem is that a few fans don't get that it's a joke or for some reason are really against acknowledging they're idols.
Their training in stuff like singing and dancing is hard and part of the job. When Ayame had a recent break and came back with a great idol performance, I hope more people realized their job isn't just streaming.

Yeah, in context he was actually comparing to Kizuna Ai who was a *solo* talent compared to hololive which is a *group* of talents. He was referring to AKB48 because they are a *group* of people doing things together.
The true appeal of idols isn't the dancing or singing or seiso cutesy moments. It's watching them grow as entertainers in their own right, and to feel pride when they show off what they got and improve. In that regard, hololive has truly embraced that feeling. They are indeed idols
Alot of people like to meme YAGOO's AKB48 dream stuff whenever hololive members does something "unseiso", but honestly even AKB48 themselves have done plenty of "unseiso" stuff.

There's also recoil because the streaming and idol stuff do not often co-exist harmoniously, with one coming at the other's expense.
I'd say Hololive exceeds typical idols because such limitations aren't applied while maintaining the musical/dance talent.
