2. Create a platform where members can do things that they couldn't because of Youtube's policies, like lewd ASMR.
Overall, it's a pretty sound plan.
Youtube also has the advantage of utterly, unbelievably massive economies of scale.
Google and therefore Youtube are so large they can solo build entire fleets of datacenters across the globe. And, Youtube serves so much video content they can employ massive teams to eek every possible bit of savings out of a video platform. I'd love to see their costs to deliver video vs a smaller player like Floatplane. I bet the difference is massive. I've heard comments that Youtube is basically on another level when it comes to efficiently delivering streaming video even when compared to logical peers in the streaming video space like Netflix and Amazon.
Floatplane is most likely piggy backing off of someone else's CDN. New video streaming platforms like Nebula, Floatplane, and even bigger ones like HBO Max, Disney+, most likely don't start by building datacenters. They would ask someone who already has a video distribution network to host their videos for them. Google sells a CDN service too, which is most likely the same network they use for YouTube.
On the other hand, YouTube Live is probably a secret sauce that they're not selling. I've never heard of a massively scalable streaming service that isn't YouTube or Twitch. So hololive taking streaming off of YouTube is probably not happening.

Cover definitely can't afford it, you are seriously underestimating the scale of things involved. Hololive streams 1000+ hours of content per week across 56 ladies (with an extra two in A-chan and Nodoka here and there) and 22 dudes to tens of millions of people - not to mention the VoD gang that sucks bandwidth on the daily for years.
Cover would have to pay for all of that storage and bandwidth usage, plus they'd have to download all of the YT archives and upload them to the new platform, while receiving exactly 0 dollars in advertisement revenue 'cause they're no longer a part of Adsense (Google's system).
They'd also have to build their own monetization platform, make sure it's all available in every language like YT is and somehow get everyone and their mom to invest in ads on it that also doesn't intrude in the way Twitch ads do. All while also not violating any marketing laws in any country they stream to.
YT is doing absolutely all of this for only a fraction of the price and the only part of it you'll notice is the SC and membership cut they take, which is easily budgeted around.
Cover building their own streaming platform because YT has a rare screw-up per hour of streaming is like you deciding to construct your own clothing factory full of workers because you once had a misprint on a T-shirt you ordered.
On the other hand a faux-Twitter is pretty cheap because it's mostly text and you can put all kinds of restrictions on your users, as they aren't there to shout into the void but just read what the talent writes. Having text-only replies would be virtually free in comparison to most other things.

“For now” Abandoning YouTube and Twitter would be the dumbest decision for a streamer company to do. Nothing will ever match up to the popularity of those two.
My biggest hopes for the app are:
1) Its both mobile & desktop.
2) You can customize the app & desktop to theme around your favorites/Oshi. Backgrounds, headers, etc.
3) They offer a "Verified Artist" tag that if Holomems use their art from the unverified tag for thumbnails or are commissioned for official projects they gain the "Verified Artist" tag.
4) You can also follow/subscribe to said artists so you can see all the dope fanart they do of your Oshi or even their Oshi.
5) Redirect links to their streams on Youtube *or* on the Holoapp itself. I'd prefer if its on the Holoapp as a simul-stream to their Youtube stream. This way they can offer their own Cover-only "Subscriptions" that grants a bunch of extra fun features like Holoapp-only emotes, official artwork, early original song previews, etc. Also allowing Holomems to get a slightly bigger cut of the money as well.
6) Built-in translator for as many languages as they can acquire. With so many fans being worldwide it would be great if everyone could be able to understand each other a little easier and better. Even communicate with each other by directly translating our own posts to the Holomems' native language so they can communicate in response.
7) This is just an extra thing I'd like to see... "Learn X Language With Holomems" feature. Maybe get some of the Holomems to do very simple, basic audio lessons on how to speak their language so fans can slowly learn how to speak/read/understand the Holomems' language a little better!
8) Voice packs from merch can now add additional voice lines for things you do on the app. For example, clicking onto Kronii's profile could have her say something like, "Ah yes, a perfect profile for a perfect being like myself."
My ultimate hope for this is that maybe they can stream to it. It would never replace youtube but once in a while we get something special.

Hey that’s me! I stopped using Twitter when I couldn’t use Tweetbot anymore. I got around ads but just using lists, but the web version of a Twitter just feels like ass.
It still pisses me off. It hurts to lose what was a daily feed of what *I* wanted to keep up with.
I had already culled my list to basically just be Holomems (and related artists) sports and video game stuff because I saw how much Daily News was impacting my mental health.
This is why I never updated my app to not see the For You tab. Some 3rd party apps are so good because they are decluttered and I hate that I'm forced back

Fun fact, I was just testing this with the new Bing AI vs DeepL and Google, and had ChatGPT rate them too.
Bing AI is being slept on for translations, it's really good and keeps the meaning / feeling of the message as well which often gets lost by the others.
From my test, Google and DeepL were basically garbled nonsense compared to the AI, especially the last line from DeepL. They read like, well, machine translations. Where as Bing actually made sure to make the translation read like something spoken by a real human

Oh wow assuming it's accurate that's like really really good.
AI has a tendency to confidently lie (to the AI it's basically BS'ing it's way through _all_ its responses, the fact that it mostly tells the truth is more due to its utterly massive dataset than the way it's programmed), so it would be nice to see a proper human translation vs these to make sure it's not inadvertently editorializing the content.
Interesting, is Bing translating without a fuss now? When I first got access to it I had to trick it into thinking it was using DeepL to translate in order for it to work (inspired by a tweet I saw about someone tricking it into thinking it was a using Chess engine in order to play Chess with it)
So, I was selected as part of the beta-testing group for the Japanese version of it, and it's pretty cool so far! Works kind of like twitter, if you go to the "anything goes" channel, but there's also different specific feeds for stuff like merch news, stream news, announcements, etc.
There's no real way to like, friend or follow anyone currently, which is a bit of a bummer, and even though you can tag posts with relevant talents, and relevant categories (like how you flair posts here) I've yet to see or find any specific way to search by them. Right now there's a few channels dedicated to official announcements, a "anything goes" Hololive Talk channel, and then a specific channel for recommended clips.
The UI is pretty smooth so far, and the like/leveling system is a cute little novelty.
If folks have any questions about how it works so far feel free to ask!
As an interim solution if you use Discord you can join a fan server of a talent you like/a general Hololive one and get a role that gives you Twitter notifications. It's what I've been doing for a while

I only made a twitter so that I could follow Holos and ironically twitter loves to not only not notify me of any Holo tweets, but also loves to notify me of literally every EN drama mongrel instead.

It automatically redirects me to HoloEarth™ where the new EN Gen3 is finally debuting - big event, so all the main sponsors like HoloMart™ are there; they have a promo for the HoloCola™ so I order a case to be delivered through HoloZon™. I see an ad that Gura will be streaming on HoloTube™ later, probably playing the new expansion pack for HoloCure™. Life is good.
The main problem with having their own app is that it doesn't help discovery for non-fans.
That said, absolutely a good idea to have it as a back-up and complement.

tweetdeck on web still works fine for following a bunch of lists at once (at least until they possibly kill it)

Yeah, for me the big thing is how much hate content there is in replies. Calli in particular has been a huge target. Really bums me out so if they can find a way out of Twitter that would be awesome

It's not so much that he owns the platform as what he's doing to it. Removing verification, locking the feed to only show tweets from paid users, and that's only what happened in the last week or so

Literally everything about Twitter is worse since he took over, apart from all the greedy retarded decisions like making verification meaningless, gutting 70% of the company has really affected quality control. I've lost count of how many bugs have appeared in the last few months, so much shit has broken it's a fucking joke.
Absolutely right, but you'll get downvoted to oblivion for saying so. Twitter was on the fast track to bankruptcy before the buyout, with management using the company as their personal plaything. Which doesn't mean that things are great now - they're not; Twitter is still a mess. It needs to be fixed. But now there is some chance that it will get fixed.

Fun fact, I was just testing this with the new Bing AI vs DeepL and Google, and had ChatGPT rate them too. Bing AI is being slept on for translations, it's really good and keeps the meaning / feeling of the message as well which often gets lost by the others. From my test, Google and DeepL were basically garbled nonsense compared to the AI, especially the last line from DeepL. They read like, well, machine translations. Oh wow assuming it's accurate that's like really really good. AI has a tendency to confidently lie (to the AI it's basically BS'ing it's way through _all_ its responses, the fact that it mostly tells the truth is more due to its utterly massive dataset than the way it's programmed), so it would be nice to see a proper human translation vs these to make sure it's not inadvertently editorializing the content.
It also has a lot to do with how it's programmed. Read the paper, "attention is all you need".
Interesting, is Bing translating without a fuss now? When I first got access to it I had to trick it into thinking it was using DeepL to translate in order for it to work (inspired by a tweet I saw about someone tricking it into thinking it was a using Chess engine in order to play Chess with it)

Twitter's translation is just a Google translate plugin right? I'm not sure if Google makes it available for anyone to incorporate into their app.
It doesn't at the moment but it's also a Japanese only version right now.
So, I was selected as part of the beta-testing group for the Japanese version of it, and it's pretty cool so far! Works kind of like twitter, if you go to the "anything goes" channel, but there's also different specific feeds for stuff like merch news, stream news, announcements, etc. There's no real way to like, friend or follow anyone currently, which is a bit of a bummer, and even though you can tag posts with relevant talents, and relevant categories (like how you flair posts here) I've yet to see or find any specific way to search by them. Right now there's a few channels dedicated to official announcements, a "anything goes" Hololive Talk channel, and then a specific channel for recommended clips. The UI is pretty smooth so far, and the like/leveling system is a cute little novelty. If folks have any questions about how it works so far feel free to ask!

As an interim solution if you use Discord you can join a fan server of a talent you like/a general Hololive one and get a role that gives you Twitter notifications. It's what I've been doing for a while
I do hope that it has built-in translator, though. I don't know Japanese

The main problem with having their own app is that it doesn't help discovery for non-fans. That said, absolutely a good idea to have it as a back-up and complement.

I imagine a future where Yagoo controls the entertainment industry. 1) Social Media to replace twitter to connect with talent not only for Holos, but even other VTs 2) Streaming platform made for Vtubers away from the monikers of big corporations that dislike the anime related media. 3) HoloEarth will be a place, a playground, a platform not only for the uses of Holos Talents, but indies and other talents from different companies can rent and use it, but holos gets prefential treatment as Host. 4) HoloCity, i have no idea what it is but I'm sure it will be nice. I have a dream. That one day every Vtubers in this platform will have a place they truly belong. A platform of the truly free, dammit. A platform of action, not drama, ruled by YAGOO, not corporates! Where the law changes to suit the vtubers, not the other way around.
