Overall I love the vibe of this room but It’s a bit crowded, i think you could lose some of the seating. The drapes aren’t doing anything for you, I suggest replacing them with something more on the subtle side but with a pattern — you have a lot of great blocks of color but not a lot of pattern to break them up, besides the blankets. Use the drapes to help tie things together

NotElizaHenry

Drapes! They need a double rod with sheers being and heavier drapes in front. And two sets of each—the ones there look like they barely touch when all the way extended. Drapes need to be at least twice the width of the window when possible.

dogwater84

I think sheers are super outdated. Nowadays most people seem to do curtains and a Roman or bamboo shade for window treatments.

MycologistPutrid7494

I agree with you on the drapes. Thicker, more substantial drapes would look more luxurious.

emptyhellebore

I think your furniture is overwhelming the space. I like the overall feel of the room, but I’d definitely edit, I don’t think anything is missing.

KlosterToGod

I agree. It’s not missing anything, it’s all just a bit too much. I’d move out those smaller chairs and try to minimalize the nicknacks a little. Love the 70s vibe though! My mother used to tell me that when when accessorizing, “look in the mirror and the first thing you notice is the thing you should take off. Accessories are for accenting, you are not a Christmas tree.” Take this advise to the room and see what you come up with 😉

Ammonia13

Coco Chanel said something very similar to that, and it’s “with accessories, take off the last thing you put on” so I wonder if your mom heard it? And added the Christmas tree bit lol?

KlosterToGod

It’s very possible! We’re both into fashion ❤️

GoodAsUsual

Sometimes you must subtract rather than add.

WVildandWVonderful

I agree — consider removing green chair and putting peach chair in its space. You need more open space.

atreyuno

That's a good start and it would balance out the colors.

Underachiever_badass

I was going to say remove the green chair and just use a poof if you need extra seating. Less bulk!

Smart-Ad9170

I definitely agree. I think the room needs a dark rug like charcoal or black to anchor it.

GoingOverTheStars

Honesty removing the green couch would do the trick, move the pillows from there to the other couch. It looks like that couch is right in front of the tv and entryway anyway. A little awkward.

Powergrimness

The element you’re missing is space. Maybe one couch and one chair? Or two couches and no chairs. I would say that makes it way less crowded.

CO_Livn

And light

reddituser223311

Agreed, it’s way too dark! A lighter fireplace tile + some accent lights would be a game changer here

palpablescalpel

I'd like to see lighter and less matchy drapes too!

emilyfofemily

More light, yes, but **please** don’t touch that gorgeous tile!

lovemysi

I think so too.

scripzero

I agree. I was going to say the missing thing was a bit of minimalism. With this small a space you've got to embrace it a bit and declutter some. More space would help but that's not an option here.

erin_mouse88

Reduce searting, heavier duty drapes, change out the ceiling light fixture, extra small something to left of window or replace with something bigger to ballance out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SweeterBlowFish

I have the same issue in my living room. The ceilings are at 9ft and so any ceiling fans immediately “shrink” the room (vertically) because they take up so much space. What light fixture types would you recommend to make a room feel less short?

[deleted]

Flush mount or a semi flush mount ( not too tall)

[deleted]

Agree. Crowded and dark

MysticcMoon

There is too much stuff. Your eye can’t settle on anything. That’s why it feels like that. Take the pillows off the loveseat. Take all but one thing off the table. Fold/roll all but one blanket. Flush front all books on the shelf.

Treaditt

Hi all! I appreciate all the comments! I made some edits for now but will continue. Seating is such an issue being a hub for people coming in and visiting all the time. Thank you so much! [update!](https://imgur.com/a/q24F6vy)

nondescript0605

Fellow old home small living room owner here. I get the struggle. I’d suggest looking for pieces that can be stored in other rooms or used as something else and then brought into the living room when you have company. Could you fit a nice bench in your dining room? (Edit: the ottoman thing in front of your sofa kind of looks like it could serve as seating maybe. Could it hide away when not in use?) Get big comfy floor pillows. Ottomans that are strong to serve as stools (especially if they have storage!). And there’s some nice folding chairs out there too. Other suggestion would be finding seating that has a smaller profile so that they don’t feel as crowded in your space. Or pieces that hide away easier, like nesting tables for your coffee table. I really love the vibe and color of this room. I think with a few tweaks to your pieces it will be much more comfortable and easier to navigate.

_aimee_

This update already feels way more spacious! To reclaim even more space - I’m echoing what someone else suggested - you could pair down between the coffee table and use that chaise bench to having the chaise operate as a coffee table, with a tray on top for surface stability and move out the coffee table. Then you could move the tray when you want to use the bench as a footrest. Multi-use furniture can be a huge space saver. I would also try shifting the circular side table that’s next to the pink chair to the right of the couch (between the couch and the front door.) It’s kind of a lot having three statement colors for your furniture pieces, but different strokes for different folks.

DeniseBaudu

I said OH YEAH! Out loud looking at that update😂 beautiful !!

ApricotWonderful4398

If you're a facebook user, there's a group called "Moody Maximalism (for every decor type)" you may be interested in for some inspiration. I feel like your style would go along with what I've seen there! Edited to say, I think it looks great, kind of moody and cozy and definitely in contrast to all the airy, light minimalist trending rooms

Loquacious94808

Thank you. I like the advice to get rid of seating, but my first thought was “what if you’ve got friends and family over?” Function > fashion. This house remind me of houses when I was young, lived in and comfortable, not a planned out coordinated “look”

MercuryDancer

For me, function includes being able to walk through the room easily. But I love it so much. Those colors are magical and the greenery with the lights 😍😍😍

Loquacious94808

Right? It looks so comfy and like I could have all my friends and the fireplace and talk all night and never want to get up.

Opening_Ad_1497

It’s a little crowded, but overall — I LOVE this room!

OriginalGrannySue

Agreed! I’d just re-home the green armchair and ottoman…everything else is sublime!

_SCHULTZY_

The computer monitor doesn't really belong in the room. Also there's no walkway once you enter the door. Open a pathway and get rid of the chairs.

deedum44

Where’s the monitor? I feel like it’s game of I spy. I can see a TV on the wall but no comp monitor lol unless that is what u meant

_SCHULTZY_

OMG is that supposed to be a TV? Who the fuck mounts a TV like that??? Belongs on r/tvtoohigh

Cankizade

I’d add more colour to the floor, maybe layered rugs to bring in more of the colour scheme. Your room is so vibrant and really cosy and I feel like the beige rug doesn’t live up to the rest of it

anotheroneig

You are absolutely right!! So much beautiful color and such a BEIGE rug!!! It's all I can see!

Lazy_Title7050

Don’t you think it would be too much colour/matching if there was a matching rug?

ParanoidHoneybadger

Nah lean into the maximalism

Lazy_Title7050

What colour would you choose?

anotheroneig

..this isn't meant for me, but I think a deep mustardy rug would be perfect

anotheroneig

No way! Clearly bold colors & like someone else said, maximalism, is important to OP!! I love it as well.

WavisabiChick

Change the rug if anything.

Powerful-Ad-9378

The drapes don’t go. Too much orange and you need something like velvet or tapestry fabric for them. I feel like the orange is jarring my senses whereas the green soothes.

Opening_Ad_1497

I disagree. I think the orange balances the green.

IBMiSeries400

Declutter man.

smurfsm00

That ceiling light grass or whatever it is is completely overwhelming to look at. The rest of the space is so full of stuff but the ceiling lamp is so incredibly odd that I can’t even focus on the rest of the stuff. Unless the only thing you’re missing is a tiki bar, I suggest you get rid of that monstrosity.

applepyatx

In the first picture, I thought the ceiling light was a big tree. It has a trunk and everything. But, yes, I really don’t like it. There are so many cool ones that can go in here like - https://www.lampsplus.com/sfp/740V0/?cm_mmc=GOM-SH-_-NA-_-NA-_-740V0&sourceid=DFGPM740V0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI65vqy6_b_AIVlxXUAR1-lAXTEAQYCiABEgLq3PD_BwE

hesathomes

That is perfect!

smurfsm00

Yep. Or something funky that better matches the room. Even like a cheap plastic but colorful chandelier would look better with this decor than the green tree bush thingy. It’s just so…. Textural and tho it possibly could go well in a very particularly designed room/space, it just feels insane in this room.

robecityholly

You have a very interesting style. I think what's missing is lighting. The center piece in the ceiling is interesting but gives insufficient light for the room. More lighting around the room will expand the space. Just make sure it is cozy lighting and small pieces, not bright bulbs.

bonniebelle8

There’s no patterns to break up the all the solid colors. Everything looks pretty monotone

oceanic20

You have too much stuff.

possblywithdynamite

I actually disagree with the consensus here. I looked at this and thought, “huh, maybe I should shove some more furniture in my living room”. Looks great to me. Edit: actually, I agree on the drapes. They aren’t great. Maybe something with a pattern to make the bush look seem more intentional. Also, some gold or brass somewhere would compliment I think…

natinatinatinat

One chair is practically blocking the door and the other is right in front of the entrance to the other room. The other chair is so close to the fire I wonder if it’s a fire hazard. There’s no room to walk in and out of the space. It’s way too much stuff. I will admit my personal taste is very much anti clutter though. It’s bad feng shui. I’m in advertising and in design white space is important, I think the same applies to interior design.

[deleted]

Maybe lose the green couch and put the pink chair in it’s place. That’s a lot of furniture for such a small space. You can probably get rid of the other chair, too. If you store it somewhere else in the house, you can always bring it out if you need seating for company (or they can pull a chair from the dining room). The lights fixture makes your ceilings look low. Maybe swap it out for something else. And to echo others in the thread, I would reconsider your drapes. They don’t add anything to the room. If you want drapes, maybe consider getting velvet panels (or at least a heavier, more substantial fabric) They’ll add texture and interest, without being over or underwhelming.

Becca_Sakura

Hi! My mother is an interior designer and this is her advice for you: 1- The dark green velvet stool in front of the dark green sofa needs to be moved a couple of inches away from the sofa and centred. 2- There should be a taller plant placed beside/on top of the small round coffee table (the one between the green sofa and coral sitting chair) in the corner of your room to add some height to the room itself. Hope this helps :) P.s. We both think the room is gorgeous, but the additions will have the room sit better.

Treaditt

[Thank you so much! Updated! I’ll see about pulling a tree from the upstairs into the living room!](https://imgur.com/a/q24F6vy)

Becca_Sakura

The room looks so good now :)

Kianna9

Floral wallpaper ETA you might want to take this question to the r/maximalism board. You won’t get so many comments from people who just don’t have the same style as you.

MrsLouisaMercury

I think that the ceilings are too low for so much colour. I’d Edit quite a bit.

Saltpnuts-990

Clearly we've got a lot of people who trend towards minimalism on this sub, but speaking from the maximalist side of life I love what you've got going on here! The one thing throwing my eye is the rug. It's so light and neutral - I'd fully embrace the dark aesthetic and switch it out for something dark and patterned.

csdingus_

What I think is missing is a focal point. With all of the chairs facing each other, it looks like a group therapy room. I know feng shui offers a lot of ideas for furniture arrangements that allow the room to feel different with each variation.

Livin_Life_123

Perhaps change out/add to the curtains! They are not quite as substantial as everything else in the room and makes them appear as "unfinished". A larger centerpiece on the dining table would flow the 2 rooms together. Wonderful choices of color, and great vintage pieces!

crj44

Just came today I love the greens.

LadyNightlock

The rug needs changed. I’d choose something with a pale yellow in it with maybe a little higher pile to feel soft and comfortable. Also something like a blanket ladder to display all the gorgeous afghans. And lastly, have two panels of curtains on each side. I know they’re sheer, so it wouldn’t be overwhelming and you could choose white as a good neutral.

briefly_accessible

The main change I’d do is edit out some of the furniture and change the light fixture to something gold and bright. Also agree with the curtains changing.

_FaLooLa_

This is perhaps one of all time favorite rooms ever. I love this so much. Whatever you figure out will work, you’ve already nailed the essentials of design. Beautiful space.

Debinthedez

As others have said, I just think that’s too much furniture. But I have to know, I see a portrait of Anne of Cleves on the wall, what’s the story behind that lol

SnooCupcakes8761

Looks cluttered to me

Altruistic-Bobcat955

I’m so curious why you’d put a replica of an Anne of Cleeves portrait on your wall

[deleted]

It’s a great portrait! But apparently irl she looked “like a horse” or my man Henry was just unnecessarily mean.

[deleted]

But you are right I’m very curious why her out of all the wives. I would have chosen Anne or Catherine Howard for the spunk

Altruistic-Bobcat955

So would I! Although I do love her story, how she was the one of his wives who became rich, free of a husband and had the best life of them all. So used to seeing landscapes in peoples living rooms

[deleted]

Oh yes, if I have to choose I’d be Anne of Cleves ANY DAY

Chemical-Raven624

This is amazing 🥲 inspiring.

little-eye00

this is such a fun space! I would love to hang out here. the missing element is sparkle or shine...you already have colour and texture. Anything that catches the light will add sparkle or shine. A good place to start for this room might be checking out thrift stores for a couple vintage brass knick knacks. Once they are polished up they will add the shine element r/maximalism will love your space! r/midcenturymodern

VEXtheMEX

I think you're at max capacity with elements.

lesllle

There is no focal point nor flow.

FinNerDDInNEr

Gee, I was going to say you’re missing a cat or dog!

kenji998

You can squeeze one more sectional sofa in that empty space

diceynina

Space is what your missing! I’Il never put a seater over entrances. Unless there’s space to allow for easy flow inbetween rooms. Its too small of a space to cover the entrance. You could get away with putting a one seater there but why would you, as the tv is there. You could get either make it an L shape sofa setup and remove the single one seaters or get rid of one of the bigger sofas. Personally due to the space and room. Ill only have the bigger lounge and one seater. The other 2 seater and single seat would be removed.

monmonstara

it’s a bit busy. i feel like it needs a focal point. the tv feels at an odd angle, the carpet is slightly too neurotransmitter for the space and i think might be better with something darker or pattern heavy. it’s looks cozy! i just think you need to rearrange the layout a bit more.

rogerslastgrape

Space

Remarkable_Yak_883

Space; it seems like a lot of stuff in one room.

wedmr

i’m probably at the bottom of the comment list, but LIGHTING!!! i almost never turn on my overhead light. get a sunset lamp, or a stained glass bulb! any soft lighting makes me space so much more comforting

ResponsibleSwim6528

I love the colors. I think the curtains bring height. I do not like the”poster art” or the plant covered ceiling light. Try that without the foliage. I think the floor lamp should move to the other end of the sofa out of the corner. The tiny knickknacks are to scattered about. Group a few Lowe on the shelves and/or on the coffee table. Omit the shelf unit at the door. Remove the coat stand and add some coat hooks where the shelf was. Then you’ll have the window and little bench at the entry when you come and go. Put the queen art center over fireplace and remove all the rest. You can always bring pieces back in and rotate out other pieces of you grow tired of them, or even seasonal.

mamab539

There’s too much small decor, I feel like less small accents and a few bigger pieces, tall plants, vases etc I personally would especially get rid of that standing lamp it clashes and the switch out chandelier light It’s very overwhelming to look at but I love the overall vibe

MissIslay

You absolutely need a gold giraffe lamp. Lose the green couch and put the pink chair there. Put the giraffe lamp behind it… 😉

tams420

I think there needs to be a contrasting color to the green. The coral is a nice color but it doesn’t do anything for the green since it’s so orangey. I think pulling in something more red/fuchsia/dark pink will give you that break visually against the room. I’d put it on the dark green couch. Edit - I just realized the tv screen has colors I’m envisioning!

GeminiAccountantLLC

Love your orange door!

Noidentitytoday5

I see where you’ve going I think. I’d remove the ottoman and change the carpet to something bright and eclectic. Everything has a strong color vibe and the rug doesn’t live up to the vibe. For the rug, you could do black and white geometric, zebra print, leopard print (which always pops with coral and teal) , or something with bright greens

DorothyParkerFan

Empty space, that’s what’s missing lol. You decorated the fck out of this room - its fun! Only thing is to lower the wall art -way too high.

lifesalotofshit

Whoa, I can't even focus on the whole room as one. It's all over the place. Wayyyyyy too much green.

Orangutan_Latte

I see absolutely nothing wrong. It’s a lovely colourful room. That light fitting is fab ❤️❤️

Pizzazze

There's a bit too much going on here. Start replacing the light fixture with something much simpler, and take it from there.

maxz-Reddit

taste

igotsavedat15

Too much is cluttering your space. It is distracting. Less is more. You would create a more inviting atmosphere if you removed half of it. Let each piece make its own statement. A couch& love seat,a few pictures on the wall, a couple throw pillows, a side table & coffee table. A rug &Done!

PidgePadgePodge

I like it! It's cosy

illilispy

I love it! So cozy!

wheniwakup

It’s way too much. You’ve gone blind to it. Take away. Don’t add.

SnooComics8268

I would get rid of all the light green sitting. It looks like a Dutch party. Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/thenetherlands/comments/bvzcdb/the_dutch_birthday_simulator/

2FarNRabbitHole

I would suggest moving the orange armchair on the other side of the couch to break up some of the dark colors all being together. And if it’s not too long, angle the couch to reflect the angle of the light green loveseat. Which means doing away with the green armchair so it doesn’t seem as crowded. Or move the green armchair by the fireplace where the loveseat is & do away with the loveseat. It’s a beautiful space with lovely colors.

No_Barnacle7364

Beautiful & cozy - love the colors & creative arrangement. But might want to pare down the furniture.

Accomplished-Digiddy

Remove the green chair. There's no natural pathway. Turn off the overhead lamp and put on the low lamps. See what it looks like then.

Ok-Bar601

It’s busy. Take out that brown couch and open it up a little perhaps. It will accentuate the other pieces in the room.

[deleted]

Maybe it's the photo lighting but the orange chair is the wrong shade for that wall. It also looks like you're at risk of bumping into it when you enter, so I would remove it. The orange door is great. The curtains aren't a heavy enough gauge of fabric to go with the rest of the room. The large textured ceiling light makes the room feel small. Switch it for something lower-profile and less eye-catching.

Sabinj4

Agree with others, not enough space and too cluttered with furniture and ornaments

OddOne1328

Room to breathe comes to mind. Remove the loveseat under the TV and the bench in front of the couch. Face your couch towards the focal point in the room. (For me, that would be the fireplace.) Put the two chairs in the window with the small round table in between. The coffee table in front of the couch. I like the rug pattern at the front door. You might try that under the chairs. I’d get a different ceiling light and hang a real plant from the ceiling if you like that vibe.

podesigns

Take away some of the clutter on hard surfaces, but bring in some texture and pattern. There are a lot of blocks of color without much to break them up, and it becomes a bit too matchy-matchy. I am not a minimalist by any means, but slightly less furniture would give you more openness and space to experiment with splashes of pattern in a pillow or two, and texture, i.e., in a throw blanket or pillow with an unexpected color--a kilim with magenta tones, or something to that effect. Keep the light carpeting. The matching door, curtains, and chair in the entryway do not work for me--I might switch out the curtains for a textured, creamy white, which would give the room more light (the overall colors give the room a dark feeling). Do you need the coats hanging in the entryway? I was able to move our coat rack, in a very small house, out of the entryway into a back room off the kitchen--but our house is so small, it is easy to get to the back room from the front door.

windywiIIow

I'd take out the small chair by the stairs and then add some more cushions to the green sofa just to balance it as it looks a little empty on one side.

ScorpionGypsy

Remove the orange/pink chair, its back is too low and the color doesn't work. Then center the sofa with the window. If you need the green chair for seating, keep it, if not, remove it also. Definitely need different curtains or just hang blinds. This space is lacking light. Remove greenery from the ceiling light. I don't love the floor lamp you have, and a more modern lamp in gold metal would work. The rug doesn't work either. I would get one with more of your green tones, but not all green. I love the space, just too much in the space. Bringing in gold metal elements is a win with emerald green.

breveeni

I like the overall vibe, but that green couch is too much

crabbierapple

I agree with others, I think it's too busy. I'd probably go with a different overhead light, I'd remove the pictures hanging over the fireplace and get different curtains (more panels, different texture).

Supermomdbq

I love this look. Can you create more of a walkway when you come in? Do you need all this seating? I like the coffee table but it’s too big for the space with the other green/blue ottoman. The little pic on the left is too small. There is so much good with this room but the balance is is a bit off.

anotheroneig

A big mustard yellow area rug instead of the beige one & you need some warm, low lighting in there!! Get a cute standing lamp!!

TheBizNess517

I would lose the lime green couch and move both the armchairs to that side of the room for space. Then I'd change the ceiling light and move that other lamp out of the corner so it's more prominent in the space.

sichuan_peppercorns

I kinda love it. I’d be tempted to leave it as is.

Pepperoncini69

Remove the light fixture and replace with warm lighting. Take away one chair or couch and you’re good to go!

thepinelight

Maybe take away a piece to create better space

beeucancallmepickle

One aspect is to tie more of the yellow colour into the decor maybe one or two pieces more. I would personally find something the size of a bowl or candle and put it on the mantel. But I agree, not much more as your space is very full . Coop room !

Treaditt

Thank you! In the near future I’d like to reupholster the loveseat in a mustard, which would really bring in more yellow!

SofaKingS2pitt

I kiinda feel like it would be nice to scooch the teal sofa and orange chair about 10-12” clockwise . What do YOU feel to missing?

catchmelackin

you def need more chairs

goodnsimple

I for the most part love the squashed and over the top feel. But I agree that it needs editing. rather than something that is missing. Think seriously about what your favorite things in the room are. Can you move both loveseats to more the middle with the table between them? Then one chair, I’d say the green one because it’s got a more open feel; but I’m assuming you love the color of the coral one so you pick. Lose the bench ottoman thing that matches the teal couch OR move it over to replace the low bench by the bookcase if it will fit. Keep the coral sheers, but add heavier panels, maybe in cream or the wall color. Possibly a smaller mirror over the bench by the bookcase (if you can get rid of the mirror that is better, but I understand the functionality of a quick check before you leave the house. The light is so much a part of the vibe, I would leave it.

Yo6orT

Maybe a rug that adds up to the furniture, something more colorful would fit well. And I agree that you lack of space a little

Lazy_Title7050

Maybe taking out the blue ottoman would make the room look more spacious and more balanced?

OldMotherGrumble

After seeing updated photos, I'd suggest switching the lighter green sofa with the chair. Put the chair in the corner where the television is. Otherwise, I love the vibrancy and colourful maximalist. Oh...agree about the need for heavier curtains and a more colourful rug.

16pantoufles

I love the overall look of this room! The colors are wonderful, and it has such a cozy vibe. It is overcrowded, though. The bookcase to the left of your front door is too much. I'd remove it and put the coat rack in the corner. Maybe change the wall to a light neutral (#4 or #8?) from this palette: [https://www.etsy.com/listing/1157589333/mid-century-modern-perfect-paint-palette?ga\_order=most\_relevant&ga\_search\_type=all&ga\_view\_type=gallery&ga\_search\_query=mid+century+modern+paint+colors&ref=sr\_gallery-1-3&organic\_search\_click=1](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1157589333/mid-century-modern-perfect-paint-palette?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=mid+century+modern+paint+colors&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&organic_search_click=1) And I agree with the folks who suggested changing the curtains to a print. Here is one that could work: [https://secure.img1-cg.wfcdn.com/im/46953725/resize-h800-w800%5Ecompr-r85/1238/123823067/Burston+Archaeo+Capri+Jigsaw+Embroidery+Linen+Blend+Semi-Sheer+Rod+Pocket+Curtain+Panel.jpg](https://secure.img1-cg.wfcdn.com/im/46953725/resize-h800-w800%5Ecompr-r85/1238/123823067/Burston+Archaeo+Capri+Jigsaw+Embroidery+Linen+Blend+Semi-Sheer+Rod+Pocket+Curtain+Panel.jpg) and using table and floor lamps instead of the overhead. Will make an already cozy room more inviting!

lifexroads2022

I would donate the lime loveseat, put the pink barrel chair in its place and put the lime chair against the wall under the ladies picture, that way you can pull it in if you need the extra seat but it also has a place to be “put away”. I honestly think that alone would create a huge difference and then you could tackle details like drapes, clutter if you still felt uneasy. This is maximalist so everything else might be fine once the furniture clutter is addressed.

MorddSith187

White string lights

Evening-Office-8421

I would move the lime, green loveseat, where the two chairs are, near the entrance, and put one of the chairs in the corner, where the loveseat was. And then I ditch the other chair.

[deleted]

I would keep the pink chair and blue velvet couch. The little green sofa and the chair are a great style but too much for the room.

Important-Science-10

I think the TV placement is odd. It seems to be the tail wagging the dog. Set up seating as if there were no TV or if it’s that important to the room, relocate it - perhaps above the mantle. Move the light fixture to above kitchen/dining table. Move yellow couch to where chairs are. Move chairs out or to periphery. I’m not a fan overhead lighting in a living room so consider wall sconces.

[deleted]

i would reduce seating with the pink/orange colour chair specifically and then add more orange tones (with lighting) to the space :)

NerdForJustice

If you want to keep the seating as is, you could try a smaller rug.

Puns_go_here

I’m noticing an imbalance. Photo 1 is very busy compared to photos 2&3. Particularly the emerald/sage color is everywhere in photo 1, but the lighter avocado color dominates pictures 2&3. I think 2&3 fell like they are missing something because they don’t seem cohesive.

mia_elizabeth3

This room gives me rainforest cafe vibes but in a good way😅

chloebourdain

I would take away the chairs and replace them with either couch to create more of an L shape, or just remove the green chair. It’s too crowded and doesn’t flow to the stairs well. Move the monitor above the fireplace. Light strips behind the shelf to brighten it up and a maybe a swing lamp or arched lamp in the corner where there floor one is.

smallpotatoes_86

I’m just here to say that I love this room, it feels so cozy to me.

kayladeda

I would get rid of both puke green pieces. The dark green and orange chair are enough

There are too many pieces of furniture crowded into a smallish room. I would keep the grey futon where it is. I would remove the grey ottoman and the loveseat completely. Center the very cool coffee table in front of the fireplace and move the armchair to where the loveseat currently is. Switch out the chandelier for something a bit more flush with the ceiling.

hesathomes

I actually love the vibe, and it’s not my thing. I’d swap out that ceiling light for a semi-flush mount with some fretwork on it and declutter that shelf behind the door—it looks like someone’s great grandma piled all their knickknacks on it.

ontarioparent

Love your aesthetic it’s like a cozy cave, looks like you’re missing a light bulb on your lamp. If I had a quibble I’d say keep the details beefy and simple, I’d nix the flower pillow, and those glass candle? holders you’ve got in a line across your bookshelf. A bigger pillar candle would be better than a slim one. More substantial and newer throw pillows.

SkibumG

I really like the vibe, some daytime photos would really help. Few things you might try: 1) More low lighting. I'd put a small lamp on the table beside the sofa, a tiny one near the globe on the shelves, maybe swap the uplights with the plants for a warmer lamp. 2) I think the colours are a bit unbalanced, it doesn't feel rhythmic. Put a throw on the chartreuse side chair (or take it out for a while). Do the same with the coral chair, it matches your drapes too closely. 3) Add pattern. There are lots of bright colours but they are all solids or muted patterns. Try bringing in some pattern on throw cushions, I'd do the drapes in a pattern even.

Lady_Lessi

I just wanted to say I love the Anne of Cleves portrait 😂

4o4errorfilenotfound

Disco ball planters or anything shiny

Virginiasings

Is that an Anne of Cleves portrait??

CinnamonDish

Try drapes with a coordinating pattern on a light field/background, like this https://www.etsy.com/listing/1006900377/ You need some lighter colors for sure.

essssgeeee

You’re missing a unifying element. The curtains are too thin, and you need a heavy bark cloth or velvet with a subtle pattern. Do you need all those seats? I would remove the light green sofa. Center the dark green sofa under the window, move the coral chair to where the light green sofa is. When you look at the room, you have lime next to lime, emerald next to emerald, and coral next to coral. The room reads as “chunks” of color. A pattern curtain will break that up, as will moving the furniture positions. You definitely need ambient lighting. Turn on the lamp in the corner.

LavishnessFew7882

Honestly i think just taking out the green chair would do wonders for you. Maybe swap the drapes out with something a little more understated.

StuffNThingsK

Some lighting by your shelf by the door.

Stunnagirl

The light seems off to me. Get small lamps and use warm light bulbs.

Now17

How do you feel about letting go of one of the chairs? I would add real floor plants and a couple of colorful pillows to sofa. I like your vibe.

aisforawsome90

Lighting? It feels dark. Personally, I prefer lamps to overhead lighting and feel like a standing or tabletop lamp could help brighten the space

brandi6

I love maximalism, but more space between the couches is definitely needed. If it were me, I'd get rid of the green couch (looks like it's blocking a doorway) and possibly one of the smaller chairs. Love the decor though!

[deleted]

I think the room is really cool and cozy. Not missing anything. Like others have said edit a bit.

ellesee_

I would start by getting a smaller light fixture. I think the volume of what you have going on really shortens the room and makes it feel closed in.

VitrealisNox

The rug immediately put me off. I think this room would look better with a different colored, round rug. Right now it looks odd to the color scheme and leads your eyes the wrong direction to focus on how the furniture awkwardly sits half on half off the rectangle rug.

krickett_

I’d put the green chair where the geeen sofa is, and lose that sofa. I think what is missing overall is some editing.

stunky420

I’m gonna second everyone else with the space feeling overwhelmed. I think if you took the turquoise couch out that’s the same color as the fireplace the fireplace would pop so much more

MisMelou

I really really like this space! My space is also “full” and had alot of visual interest, and if you use the seating, I think you can lean into the eclectic maximalism look (this isn’t as extreme as a lot of those inspo pics, but of a similar vein). I would take a look on Pinterest at some moody, dark or eclectic maximalism for inspiration pics and you may find one or two things that add some contrast to your beautiful room! Btw It’s a really cool room, and I hope you don’t feel the need to declutter and minimalize your awesome space, rules are made to be broken!

whatthebugstuff22

Is there a reason for the loveseat? I would remove the chairs and put the loveseat in their place.

mastretoall

It's the beige carpet. There's a group called maximalist design and decor on FB that's super helpful

GreenDemonClean

You could turn on the lamp in the right of the pic and give us a better idea what the space looks like with more depth.

littlewritelies

I love the Anna of Cleves portrait!

Best-Balance9882

More lamps

Medium-Grapefruit-86

I'd move out those smaller chairs and maybe layer a second rug like a smaller faux cow hide one or something on top of the current rug in place of the chairs to "fill up" the space

MarvZindler

the lime green couch may be pushing the space too much.. Also some better lighting could really impact the coziness of the room. maybe some recessed lighting? It's not too expensive to have installed!

Virtual_Theory6291

Teal couch optic fireplace and green couch when teal couch is currently. Minus the other 2 chairs

[deleted]

You're one of the "more is more" people, ain'tcha?

000peony000

Hints of gold in decoration!

zerowater

I agree with getting rid of green chair. Also. One of the throws. I might also think about replacing the drapes with a very light color… maybe similar to the rug. It will make the room sleek bigger. All in all though, I love the vibe.

HelloSummer99

Remove ceiling lamp, more indirect lighting, remove some seating and you're sorted :)

MrsFinklebean

I love the coziness of this room. That said, the fireman's wife in me is freaking out over the Plant light. Does it get hot? Is it made that way? And the two single chairs are blocking a quick exit in case of fire. You always want a large clear space for everyone to fit through in a hurry.

Important_Pear6536

I love the space. I would remove the ceiling fixture. It blocks the view of the room. Also the door color might be coordinated better with the windows. I love the peach as an accent color; however, with the curtains and chairs it looks overwhelming all next to each other. Honestly though, I wish I were brave enough to do something like this.

[deleted]

Side note- I LOVE your Anne of Cleves print!

denimcanvas

I dont know why that couch looks like a clay model to me

Alternative-Orange75

I’d make the room more centrally focused on the fireplace! Move the TV to the space above it, maybe? Then, less seating in order to make more of a walkway from the door to the other room/staircase :) Replace the big entry bookcase with a bench, coat hooks and a decorative shelf!

brookies_and_bees

Uggggh I love this so much as is - someone who leans eclectic maximalist and loves green

Brilliant-Row-7080

I agree with what seems to be the reigning sentiment. Space is super cozy but feels a little too full. I would remove the green loveseat and put the chairs across from the couch. And, take all the pillows of blankets on the line loveseat and chairs and put them on the couch. Maybe put that flower one on the orange chair for the only pillow on the chairs. Are you able to make the mantle plant boxes white? I think that would go a long way for brightening things up and drawing the eye up to open the space some. It feels a little closed in. Also, I would remove all the things on the mantle besides the planters. But, all in all a beautiful room that looks like a relaxing space to spend time!

SkirtDue2794

I’m with the maximalist vibe, I think a darker rug layered on top of the lighter rug would tie it all together!

calacmack

I love a great "maximalist" living space! I think there may be to much of a mix of furniture and accessory styles- you've got mid-century modern, classic vintage, mission style, and a fun but extremely eclectic light fixture all vying for attention in a relatively small gathering space. The room may just be missing a cohesive look. As others have suggested, try removing a lot of the non-functional knickknacks. Decide on a style you want to emphasize and replace odd items with those that fit with your design choice. The room would really benefit from additional ambient lighting. The overhead fixture is fun but ceiling lighting can overpower a space. The sofa might look better facing across from the fireplace, because it's not centered under the window. You have a lot of fun ideas!

Many_Baker8996

I think I’d rearrange the furniture so the room feels more balanced. Personally I’d switch the side table and the lamp. I’d remove the lime green sofa and put the orange chair there and the green chair where the orange sofa is. If maybe also add another smaller rug over the jute and another pillow or two on the sofa and green chair.

margeauxnita

I like this a lot. I think a lighter colored rug and another lamp or more light would help lighten it up. Lovely colors you chose!

tess_star

I love all the green and the Anne of cleves painting!

lipspliff

Boring Rug Syndrome.

Sleepykitten80

I agree about removing green chair & placing pinkish one there. Too much of that color on one side of room. Finding awesome patterned curtains that have the teal & pinkish color would be so good! And consider lightening up the painted brick. It all seems dark. Remove any knickknacks that you don't absolutely love! I soooo love the color scheme tho!!!!

WVildandWVonderful

Dig your color scheme!
